SEPTEMBER 2016 EDITION

THE WOODLANDS UMC

POINT A MESSAGE FROM

DON MEADOR PASTOR TO SENIOR ADULTS

Studying God’s Word in community with others can enrich our understanding of scripture. Beginning in September, our church focus will be to “Explore the Word.” We encourage you to join a small group, Bible study or Sunday School class to continue growing in your faith. We’ve highlighted a few below. There are many more to choose from, including a couple that are pastor-led. DISCIPLE BIBLE STUDY Monday evening or Tuesday morning ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES Perspectives, Friendship, Good News, Common Ground Single Life, Emptying Nest INSPIRE: DEVELOPING A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE TO IMPACT THE WORLD This lunchtime study, led by Rev. Jason J. Nelson and guest teacher Summer Sanford, MBA, explores the importance of spiritual leadership through the actions of a few biblical trailblazers who turned the world upside-down for the cause of Christ. It will meet on Tuesdays, starting September 14, from noon – 1:00 p.m. in Aldersgate Hall. Find more details in the August 28 bulletin, by going to thewoodlandsumc.org/explore or by contacting Senior Adult Ministries at 281.297.5935 or seniors@twumc.org

One of my prized possessions is my dad’s Bible. It is worn around the edges and its’ pages are yellowing. I remember seeing my dad with his Bible and Sunday School Quarterly in hand on Sunday morning. He seldom missed attending the Men’s Class and morning and evening worship services. And I will never forget a comment made by one of his good friends after my dad’s memorial service. He said, “Your dad was one of the most ‘Christ-like’ men I’ve ever known.” That would have embarrassed my dad. He was a quiet, humble man who lived his faith mostly by his actions rather than his words. His life was one of service to others. His life was anchored in God’s Word and he lived by it. He would agree with the Psalmist who said: “Thy Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119: 105 The Bible has been called “The Book to Live By.” We can’t live well if we’re confused about moral values. We can’t live well without guidance amid the complexities, false directions, and blind alleys of the world. The Bible has helped countless people find a compass in life and discover how to live victoriously in service to others. We all need to rediscover this book. We need to dust it off and explore its’ beauty and meaning. As we begin the fall season we’ll be encouraging everyone to “Explore the Word.” If you are not yet in a class or a Bible study group, now is the time to get started. You’ll find a list of adult classes in this edition. I hope you will find one that fits your needs. Jesus once said, “It is written, one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Mt. 4:4) Let us resolve to rediscover God’s Word. Let us live up to our heritage as Methodists to be “the people of the Book.” Let us rededicate ourselves to “Exploring the Word” together. Your friend,
