PRIME TIMERS SEPTEMBER LUNCHEON The Prime Timers monthly luncheon was held on Wednesday, September 3 in Wesley Hall. The yearly flu shot clinic was held in conjunction with the luncheon. Rev. Mark Sorenson opened with a great devotional. Congressman Kevin Brady gave a Capitol Hill Update and answered questions afterward. Please plan to join us for our November Prime Timers luncheon which will be held in Wesley Hall on November 5.
Lorrie Foster got a flu shot for her birthday!
Thanksgiving is a unique American holiday. Of course, we remember it started with the pilgrims gathering to offer thanks for divine providence in a time great suffering. But it was 240 years after that first Thanksgiving that Thanksgiving Day was reinstated on the calendar and proclaimed an official American holiday. And that was done at a time when things were going badly. It took the tragedy of the Civil War and the scarred spirit of Abraham Lincoln to recall the pilgrim heritage, with the hope that such a recollection might serve to help heal the nation. In Lincoln’s words: “We have forgotten the Gracious Hand which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and strengthened us, and vainly imagined all these blessings were produced by some superior virtue or wisdom of our own. Intoxicated by unbroken success we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace; too proud to pray to the God who made us.” We are living in a time when things seem to be going badly. We also live in a time when many have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace. And far too many are too proud to pray to the God who made us. So, as we prepare to celebrate another Thanksgiving Day, we need to focus on more than what we shall eat. We need to focus on the purpose of the day. And that is to pray, to offer thanks, and to ask for Divine guidance in the midst of troubled times. May you have a blessed and prayerful Thanksgiving. Your Friend, Don
