Sanders Park was officially opened on 14th September 1968 on land given by Mary Beatrice Sanders in her will. Miss Sanders died in May 1951 aged 94. Her sister Lucy Mary Maud Sanders died in 1945 aged 80. The sisters were daughters of Benjamin Hadley Sanders , a former Bromsgrove Town Clerk and great-granddaughters of Benjamin Sanders who opened a button making factory in Bromsgrove in the early 19th Century . Sanders Park was declared open by Robert Harvey, Chairman of Bromsgrove Urban District Council. The ceremony was attended by relatives of the Sanders family. Today Sanders Park attracts over 350,000 visitors a year. Its facilities include tennis courts, skate park, bowling green, multi-use games area and children’s play area. The park café provides hot food, drinks and ice cream. SANDERS PARK CELEBRATION SUNDAY 16th SEPTEMBER : 12pm – 4.30pm Join us in the park to celebrate Sanders 50th Birthday. We are delighted to be working with the Bromsgrove Society at this event to display photos and share memories of the park from the last 50 years. Bring a picnic, listen to music from the Wyre Forest Brass Band and local band The Peas playing music from the 80’s 90’s & 2000’s, along with circus performance and workshops, Victorian music workshops, classic cars, face painting and songs from the Artrix Show Choir.

Could your village be crowned the culture capital of Wychavon? Applications are now open for villages across the district to be in with a chance of being crowned Wychavon Village of Culture 2019. The competition will see the winning area awarded £5,000, with two runners up receiving £1,000 each, to deliver a programme of cultural activity during 2019. As part of Wychavon District Council’s promise to support and engage with communities, the aim of Wychavon Village of Culture 2019 is to ‘encourage culture as a catalyst for change’. The programmes, which can include a mixture of visual arts, literature, music, theatre, heritage, sports and more, will need to reach a wide variety of audiences, lead to a lasting social impact and create a legacy for the area. They should be high quality cultural programmes that are distinctive, ambitious, build on existing strengths, include partnerships with local organisations and will contribute to the health and wellbeing of the area. To apply, areas need to spell out their own vision and how they will use the prize money by submitting an expression of interest by 21 September and the top three will be selected by the Localism and Rural Advisory Panel in early October. The chosen three then need to submit a final bid by 9 November for Executive Board to make a final decision before the winner is announced in December. Gerry O’Donnell, Portfolio Holder for Community Development, Culture and Sport a Wychavon District Council, said: “Wychavon Village of Culture 2019 is a great opportunity for communities to come together to create a legacy for their village through an exciting programme of cultural activity. “It is well recognised that engaging in cultural activities such as art, music, and theatre, can benefit mental health and wellbeing, and help combat feelings of isolation. “The district is full of thriving villages with different strengths and the competition is all about building on those to ensure a bright future for residents.”

An Inside Look...

Now that Summer is drawing to a close, the time for indoor entertainment takes precedence. Theatres can often be a source of comfort as well as entertainment during the colder months. As winter starts to show itself on the horizon, so will the mischievous pantomimes and fairy tale shows that steal our hearts at Christmas. One of the more prominent theatres in Bromsgrove is the Artrix Theatre. The Artrix Theatre was built between 2004 and 2005. Altogether the theatre has 300 seats across 2 levels, along with a rehearsal rooms which is used as a dance studio and studio theatre for smaller performances. The total seating compacity is 520. Since its construction is has become heart of the community in Bromsgrove. Its is located outside of the town centre, near the Heart of Worcestershire College Bromsgrove campus. Not only is it used as a theatre, but it is also home to a cinema and art gallery. The cinema shows the latest film releases regularly. Well-known comedians have performed at theatre. It works alongside Bromsgrove Arts Alive, an organisation “dedicated to supporting and promoting a broad spectrum of the arts* in Bromsgrove and the surrounding areas” It also has its own youth theatre group, designed to get the young people of Bromsgrove more involved within the theatre.

THREE WAYS TO KEEP YOUR HOME COOL IN THE SUMMER

I

n such heat it’s important to know how to keep your home cool, without having to go out and splurge on an AC unit. Here are three ways to buffer your home from the heat without racking up your electric bill.

1

2

BBQ, BBQ, BBQ! It’s obvious but using your oven or stove in the summer will make your house hotter, so go outside and fire up that grill.

3

Place an ice bowl in front of your fan. Trust us, this trick is magic. Simply fill a small mixing bowl with ice and position it at an angle in front of a large fan so that the air whips off the ice at an extra chilled, extra misty temperature

Swap your sheets. While textiles like flannel sheets and fleece blankets are fantastic for insulation, cotton is a smarter move this time of year as it breathes easier and stays cooler.

Your Garden In the Summer How To Cultivate Your Roses Roses will grow in almost any soil, as long as it is well-drained. Incorporating some well-rotted garden compost or manure into the planting area will get your roses off to a flying start. There are so many different roses, there is possibly one for any spot in the garden, from a container on a sunny patio, to a climber for a north-facing wall. Roses are deep rooted plants that, once established, can survive on the moisture present naturally in the soil. But, in the first few years after planting, and where the soil is especially dry, thorough watering is recommended. Wet the top 25cm (10in) of the soil every 10 days in prolonged dry spells to give the best results. Roses in containers need to be watered so that the compost never dries out, but is never soggy; this could be every day in hot weather. For more on selecting suitable roses for container growing, see the links below.

How Writing Your Will Could Help The Hospice A month-long Will writing campaign led by St Richard’s Hospice is set to return this September. During the hospice’s Write a Will Month campaign, a number of Worcestershire solicitors’ firms will offer people the opportunity to write a simple Will for £95, or a double Will for £150 – with 100 per cent of the money donated to St Richard’s. The firms taking part are Kitcat & Co Solicitors, based in Malvern, and Harrison Clark Rickerbys, based in Worcester – with more to be confirmed. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of writing a Will – which is a document setting out how people want their money, property and possessions to be distributed after their death. It is important to write a Will because in situations when a person dies without one, rules dictate how the individual’s estate is allocated which may not be as they would wish. It is also important to update a Will if personal circumstances change – for example if someone marries, divorces or adopts a child. St Richard’s Hospice is also encouraging people to consider leaving a gift in their Will, after they have provided for family and friends, although there is no obligation to do so. To take part, simply call your preferred solicitor and make an appointment quoting the “St Richard’s Hospice Write a Will Scheme”. For further details of participating solicitors call the Fundraising team on 01905 763963, or visit:

They will continue to be the popular mobile phone repair shop from the heart of Worcester City known for their friendly, honest and reliable service. However, they will now be doing laptop and computer repairs on top of mobile phone, tablet, laptop, sat nav and games consoles. The new shop is brighter, bigger and even more smart. This allows the guys to take on more work and have faster turnaround times. Their customers will still be at the heart of everything they do. As always, they will be providing free quotes before any work is done to allow customers to make informed decisions without any pressure. All their services come with a three month warranty in order to guarantee customer satisfaction. The shop is soon to be looking at opening some days until 7pm. This makes it easier for those who are working full time to still be able to get their technology fixed at a time suitable to them. Customers can be rest assured as they can still park at the Free 2-hour parking at Sainsbury's and there will be a drop off point right outside of the shop for those dropping off bits of technology with prearranged appointments. There is also disabled access. The guys are looking forward to providing both old and new customers with any support or technical issues they may need. An inside look at: Malvern Theatres

Welcome to another instalment of our series called an inside look. Every month we will be choosing a local attraction to visit and offer an inside look as to what’s on and what to expect. With summer slowly drawing to a close, it is time to head indoors! It’s the season for cinemas, theatres and homely pubs! This month we will be looking at one of the best theatres in the Midlands: Malvern Theatre. Nestling at the foot of the Malvern Hills, Malvern Theatres is a major centre for the arts in the West Midlands. Home of the famous Malvern Festivals, founded by Bernard Shaw and Barry Jackson in 1929, the theatre underwent a lottery-funded refurbishment in 1997. Hailed both locally and nationally as a model of artistic and architectural excellence, Malvern Theatres boasts one

of the most diverse selection of plays, music, comedy, dance, film and education work to be found under a single roof anywhere in the country.

became known for its George Bernard Shaw productions in the 1930s and from 1977 onwards, along with the works of Edward Elgar.

Malvern Theatres, housed in the Winter Gardens complex in the town centre of Great Malvern, has been a provincial centre for the arts since 1885. The theatre

Over its history the theatre and festival has closed several times, including during World War II, in the early 1960s, in the early 1970s, and in the late 1990s when a new complex was built with an 850-seat Festival Theatre, a Forum Theatre, a 400-seat cinema, and a bar and restaurant. This very popular theatre has events running throughout the week. Keep an eye out on our What’s on Pages some of the events. For the most up to date events visit their website at

Battle Proms at Ragley Hall Saturday 11 August 2018

Pack up the hampers and champers and join thousands of loyal fans for an exceptional afternoon and evening of entertainment at the 8th annual Ragley Hall Battle Proms Concert. Enjoy a full 2 hour programme of captivating classical music from the 60 piece New English Concert Orchestra, led by Douglas Coombes MBE and compered by much-loved BBC presenter Pam Rhodes. The extensive programme of entertainments also includes toe-tapping vintage vocals, breathtaking Spitfire display to Elgar’s Nimrod, sensational freefall demonstration by The Red Devils parachute team, dramatic WWI cavalry display, and ground-shaking live fire from over 200 cannons! The Battle Proms is still believed to be the only opportunity in the world to see their signature piece – Beethoven’s ‘Battle Symphony’ – performed as he composed it: with 193 live firing Napoleonic cannons providing a thunderous percussion! The Battle Proms team are delighted to announce that in 2018 they will be supporting SSAFA – the Armed Forces charity, who provide lifelong support for our Forces and their families, whenever and wherever they are needed. Since 2004, through audience donations and contributions from concert profits, the Battle Proms events have raised over £330,000 for military charities.

Motoring Tips For Saving Money When Running Your Motor We all know the financial cost or running a motor. The weekly fill up can feel like a huge strain on your purse. Here are some tips on how to help reduce the financial pressure. 1. Reduce the amount you are topping up each week. An effective way to do this is by driving more smoothly, revving an engine wastes petrol. Ensure you have your eyes on the road ahead and stay back from drivers in front. Any sharp stopping or acceleration adds up on fuel consumption. 2. Walk when you can It might be an obvious point but so many of us use cars for short journeys such as going to the local shop or visiting a friend around the corner. It is these short journeys which can use up more fuel than expected. 3. Get rid of the clutter in your car Tidying up the car and getting rid of unnecessary objects will reduce the weight of your car. 4. Price compare Keep note of the fuel prices in your area, always go the cheapest petrol station. If you know you are going to an area where the petrol is cheaper, make sure you fill up there.

HOW TO MASTER THE BACK-TO-SCHOOL SEASON The summer holidays are coming to an end which means the preparation for a new year at school begins. New school supplies, haircuts, and special end-of-summer outings all play into the back-to-school routine. There are some other things that parents can do for themselves and their kids to ensure a smooth transition into the school year. One way to get the new year off to a good start is to try and set up a bedtime and wake-up routine in advance. If possible, it’s best to establish bedtimes and wake-up times two weeks in advance of the start of school. By the time the first school bell rings, kids will already be on the right sleeping schedule and it will be one less worry for your family. Another thing you can do that will help the transition happen smoothly is to organize clothing. Figure out and donate the clothes that your children have outgrown and from there, decide what items you may need more of before school begins. Finally, try and plan healthy lunches and snacks, the better you plan out the meals in your home, the healthier choices you will make for your kids. When you pack protein-rich snacks and lunches, balanced with fruits, vegetables, and other wholesome items, you ensure that your children will have the energy and brainpower to make it through their school days.

An inside look at:

COUGHTON COURT

Coughton Court is being reopened after the winter break in March. It is an imposing Tudor house set in beautiful gardens with a collection of Catholic treasures. Coughton Court is the home of the Throckmorton family who have lived at Coughton since 1409. John de Throckmorton, Under Treasurer of England to Henry VI, acquired Coughton in the early 15th Century

“Coughton is still very much a family home with an intimate feel” through his marriage to Eleanor de Spiney. Their descendants have held it for 600 years and, although the National Trust has owned the house since 1946, the family still live here. The present resident, Mrs McClarenThrockmorton, and her family

enjoy occupancy of the house under a 300 year lease. The origins of Coughton Court lie in pre-conquest times and there is evidence of a house on this site from the 14th Century. The present building was begun in the 15th Century and has since survived in a family who for much of that time were impoverished, persecuted or imprisoned for their adherence

to the Catholic faith. Explore this story of fascinating personalities through the ‘family album’ of portraits and Catholic treasures around the house. Coughton is still very much a family home with an intimate feel and the family still manage the stunning gardens which they have created. There is still more to enjoy away from the house and gardens. For the little ones an activity shed with a wealth of games and activities to keep them busy and for those seeking something a little less energetic then a stroll through our ancient woodland, to be found awash with bluebells in the spring, or a visit to the cafe for a relaxing cream tea. Adult - £12 • Child - £6 Thursday - Sunday from March 2nd onwards

How To Treat Those Irritating Bites And Stings With the hot weather comes those irritating insects that love to take a bite out of us! Bites and stings can be very painful and itchy, they can even lead to swelling and infection. The NHS has advice on how to treat insect bites and stings: •Remove the sting, tick or hairs if still in the skin. •Wash the affected area with soap and water. •Apply a cold compress (such as a flannel or cloth cooled with cold water) or an ice pack to any swelling for at least 10 minutes. •Raise or elevate the affected area if possible, as this can help reduce swelling. •Avoid scratching the area or bursting any blisters, to reduce the risk of infection – if your child has been bitten or stung, it may help to keep their fingernails short and clean. •Avoid traditional home remedies, such as vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, as they’re unlikely to help. The pain, swelling and itchiness can sometimes last a few days. If you have troublesome symptoms after an insect bite or sting, the following treatments may help: •For pain or discomfort – take over-the-counter painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen (children under 16 years of age shouldn’t be given aspirin). •For itching – ask your pharmacist about over-the-counter treatments, including crotamiton cream or lotion, hydrocortisone cream or ointment and antihistamine tablets. •For swelling – try regularly applying a cold compress or ice pack to the affected area, or ask your pharmacist about treatments such as antihistamine tablets.

Conservatory Roof Solutions

Transform your conservatory into a comfortable, all year round living space! Unfortunately the ‘traditional’ conservatory polycarbonate roof offers no insulation properties at all making the ‘ too hot too cold ‘ scenario only too common. Most of the suns heat is conducted in the summer into the room making it unpleasantly hot for normal use and conversely in the winter months it can be virtually impossible to keep most conservatories warm because the roof allows any heat to escape.
