A new Year A New You for 2019 Well well well, it’s that time of year again my friends. It feels like just yesterday I was writing last year’s New Year post, where I talked about resolutions and why I don’t like them. I still stand by what I said: that if you want to change something, you go ahead and change it. You don’t wait until Monday, or summer, or the New Year. You just get on with it. That being said, I know a lot of you like to set yourself resolutions, so I wanted to suggest five really great things I think we would all benefit from doing in 2018. Little lifestyle changes which will make a huge difference to your world and the beautiful world that we live in. So let’s go.

COMPLAIN LESS

We all love a good moan, and I find myself complaining about stupid things just as much as the next person, but we need to wake up. This year, let’s all try and remember how blessed we are. Let’s try and be more grateful, see the positive. Realise that, if you’re reading this from your smartphone, tucked up in bed, with a roof over your head, food in your fridge, and a job to go to, you are one of the most well-off people in the world, and you have opportunities open to you that some people will only ever dream of. So, let’s quit complaining. Quit moaning. People in this world are suffering and starving every day, and we are being ungrateful.

BE KINDER TO OTHERS

I know it’s easy to get frustrated at other people. I know people are weird and irritating and they do things which annoy us but please, let’s try to take it easy on each other. We all make mistakes, we all do things now and then which don’t necessarily comply with our true character. We try to be good and do good things, but sometimes we mess up. All of us. It’s called being human. So let’s stop being so quick to judge and to assume things about people. If we all just took a little more time, had a little more patience, a little more understanding, maybe life would be easier. Instead of jumping to conclusions and assuming everything about a person when they inconvenience you, why not just take a step back, give them a smile, and let it go? It will not affect you in a week’s time. It won’t even affect you tomorrow. So trust me when I say, it does not matter. Life is far too short to waste even a second of it being frustrated and angry about superficial things. Let’s all try to relax, and be a bit more forgiving.

BE KINDER TO YOURSELF

While you’re running around being kind to others, don’t forget to be kind to yourself. Don’t be afraid to put yourself first more often. Not in a selfish way, but in a ‘I need to look after myself today’ kind of way. If you need some ‘you’ time, you take it. If that means cancelling plans and cuddling up on the sofa with your favourite book, do it. You don’t have to justify it, you don’t have to explain it. You just have to look after yourself.

EDUCATE YOURSELF

You know what blows my mind? When people say they’re bored. So long as you’ve got access to the internet, or books, or PEOPLE, you have access to pretty much all of the information in the world. How can you ever be bored?! You could pick up your phone and learn about Greek mythology, about how mountain ranges are formed, how to speak a new language, how to play the guitar, whatever it is that takes your interest. All you have to do is read and research. And it’s totally free. Don’t you think that’s incredible? Why not take advantage of that this year? Instead of spending your evenings watching TV and scrolling through Instagram, why not learn something? Why not educate yourself? Leaving school or getting a university degree does not mean that you are ‘done’ with learning. You will never be ‘done’ with learning. There is so much knowledge and history and LIFE out there, and you’ve got billions of years to catch up on, so get reading.

LOOK AFTER OUR WORLD

You might not see it in your own environment, but we are destroying our planet my friends. You may think that you’re just one tiny person who isn’t making much of an impact. But you are. So make that impact good. Recycle. Give your old clothes to charity shops. Stop using so much plastic. Reduce your meat intake. Reduce your dairy intake. Walk more. Drive less. Turn off your lights. Don’t waste water. Do your best to behave in a way that is thoughtful of a world bigger than yourself. And if you’re struggling to realise why this is so important, see number four.

Christmas Tree Festival 2018 - 8th December - 3rd January Our hugely popular Christmas Tree Festival returns to the cloister this December. Local businesses, charities and schools will provide and decorate 95 glittering Christmas trees which line the medieval cloister, creating a truly magical display. The Cathedral has now officially taken over the running of this event from Daisychain Benevolent Fund. This year there will be a shortlist of 6 trees to go through to a public vote for The People’s Choice award. As well as many returning supporters we have a number of new entrants this year and we’re looking forward to seeing all the creative masterpieces, a spectacle not to be missed for children and adults. The Tree Festival runs from 8 December – 3 January and is free to visit. Please make a donation via one of the barrels to support the Cathedral and its work.

LOCAL YARN SHOP SUPPORTING THE COMMUNITY Kirsty and David run a number of businesses in Worcestershire offering residential and domiciliary care services for adults with autism and learning disabilities. With their people centered approach both of them thrive off of the challenge of finding new ways of making a significant difference to people’s lives. “We have a clear understanding of the unique needs of individuals with learning disabilities and autism. Our approach is person centered and we are committed to making a significant contribution to the individual development and well-being of our Service Users” With the opening of “Wotahoot Yarn Shop” in Lowesmoor, Worcester we have been able to extend the opportunities we offer in helping people with learning disabilities and low incomes integrate into the community. Kirsty explained that the success of the business in its first year of trading has been put down to the fact that they offer tuition for all levels of knitters from the beginner to where seasoned knitters can learn the secrets of finishing off a garment with a professional touch. We offer a daily ‘Knit and Natter’ where people get together, share ideas and help each other. This provides social interaction and with the added benefit that knitting won’t just result in creating something useful – a recent NHS research has found a hobby such as knitting or crochet can also reduce depression and anxiety, slow the onset of dementia, and distract from chronic pain. Wotahoot also sell the latest styles of yarn and patterns which enthusiasts can travel miles to get their hands on. “Anyone can pick up the hobby at any age, it’s a good idea to start off with a small project and build your confidence from there. Start with a scarf, then a hat and before you know it you are able to create your own masterpiece” says Kirsty. We recently teamed up with Worcester County Council and we are now able to offer a range of free textile courses for unemployed, students and low-income participants ranging from Batik fabric printing to weaving. Throughout the holidays and half term we run tailor made courses for children. For more information or to keep up to date with all the latest news, events, invites, special offers, tips, tricks and more, join our newsletter! Get Fit For February & Help St Richards Hospice At The Same Time

You are going to cut out junk food and booze for January – so continue your health-kick this February with the St Richard’s Hospice #FitForFeb challenge.

Put your new fitness apps, watches and exercise gear to the test with #FitForFeb and challenge yourself to walk, swim, run or cycle a total of 28km in February. We’re asking you to match each kilometre you cover pound-for-pound – meaning your hard work will quite literally pay off, as all money you raise will support our free hospice care. A donation of £28 goes a long way in supporting our care, for example: £15.23 could pay for a specialist Day Hospice nurse for an hour, and £11.02 could pay for a Hospice at Home Healthcare Assistant for an hour*. #FitForFeb is run in partnership with Everyday Hero, which means you can connect your Strava, Mapmyfitness and Fitbit accounts to your fundraising page – allowing supporters to see what you achieve, as you achieve it! Once signed-up simply go to your user settings on your EverydayHero account to connect your activity tracking apps. (Connecting fitness apps to EverydayHero) There’s no cost to sign-up for #FitForFeb – and all those who complete 28km, accompanied by a donation of £28 within the 28 days of February will receive a free St Richard’s Hospice technical t-shirt and #FitForFeb certificate.

Ray Sturdy Talks: The Rise & Fall of Worcestershire’s Witley Court

A spectacular royal palace was created by the Earls of Dudley before its fire and ultimate demise. Now cared for by English Heritage, extensive work has been done on restoring the grounds, the gardens and the Perseus and Andromeda fountain. It is now a great place to visit. Witley Court was once of the great country houses of England, reaching its peak in the Victorian period when it was the setting for extravagant parties and royal entertainments. After a devastating fire in 1937, however, it became one of the country’s most spectacular ruins. It is still possible to gain a sense of the opulence and scale of the 19th-century interiors, as well as to see the earlier layers of the building’s history laid bare by the fire. Location: Henry Sandon Hall Date: Tuesday 15th January Time: 7.30pm Price: £7.50 (includes a drink*) *Choose from either a glass of wine, a beer or any soft drink Please visit the website below to purchase tickets

10 Top Tips ToStay Safe this Winter Winter conditions can make driving a real challenge for motorists and can even lead to an accident. With this in mind it is crucial to prepare yourself adequately before embarking on a journey in the winter. It is worth knowing how to prepare yourself and your car, while also considering different ways to approach your driving when faced with adverse conditions

Consider breakdown cover Breakdown cover is crucial at this time of year. And will give you the peace of mind of knowing you won’t end up stranded in the cold. 6. De-ice your windscreen Before going anywhere, it’s important that you’ve got a clear, unobscured view of the world. 7. DON'T LEAVE IT TO CHANCE UNCHECKED APPLIANCES COULD POSE A RISK TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY

Anyone who has gas appliances or fittings in their property needs to be aware of the risks of unsafe gas work. This section provides valuable information on gas safety in the home and how to ensure you and your family stay safe. It is an important time of the year where, after a break, we will be beginning our use of gas appliances and it is important to consider getting them checked. Gas appliances should be safety checked every year and serviced regularly by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Find out why it’s so important and what checks your engineer will carry out. If you notice any of the following warning signs, you’ll want to get your appliance serviced right away:

• The gas appliance is not working properly • The appliance is burning with a lazy yellow flame rather than a crisp blue one • Black marks/stains are evident around the gas appliance • The pilot light keeps going out • There is increased condensation in the room Prior to any work being carried out it is important to agree with your registered engineer their scope of the work so that everyone is clear. For example, there are differences between an appliance service and a safety check and equally between a safety check of appliances and a safety check of the whole installation, which includes all pipework and appliances.

Keep Warm This Winter

As the temperature dips, the leaves fall and Christmas lights go up, don’t forget to get your home ready for the cold winter months. Here are some helpful tips to get your home winter ready. 1 ) Keep the warmth in (and the cold out) First off be sure to check that your heating system is in good working order. Next, make sure that once heat is generated it doesn’t get lost straight away. Check the seals on your windows and doors and if they are broken, we recommend you have these repaired as soon as possible. A lot of heat can be lost through single glazing and even double-glazed windows installed before 2006. If you believe this is happening in your home, contact a glazing professional to discuss installing or replacing your old windows with modern thermally efficient glazing. Secondary glazing and/or applied window film should also be considered as an option. It is important to ensure your home has sufficient ventilation to keep living areas healthy and prevent the build-up of moisture. Without adequate ventilation, moisture in the air may lead to condensation, which can cause mould on walls and damp that can damage interior surfaces and impair the quality of vision of your windows. 2 ) Keep energy use under control It’s normal for fuel bills to rise over the winter, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find ways to reduce your energy use at this time of year. Your home’s windows could be a potential energy saver. If you live in a semi-detached house with single glazed timber windows and electric heating, upgrading to A+ rated energy efficient windows could potentially save you up to £446 a year in energy costs, based on the average window area for this home type. 3 ) Prepare your home’s exterior Winter can bring all sorts of extreme weather to your doorstep, so preparing the exterior of your home for what nature could throw its way is a good idea. – clear out gutters and downpipes. – check roof tiles and rooflights and have leaks repaired now before the worst of the weather arrives – check the exterior of all windows and doors for damage that needs repairing

What To Do In The Garden This Winter Don’t let the cold keep you indoors: there’s plenty to do outside, from planting pots to helping hedgehogs – just follow our checklist. Now that winter is here, garden writing veers from celebrations of autumn to gloom and doom – all that talk of “battening down the hatches” and “tucking in the garden”. Yet there’s still much to do and enjoy. Whenever Christopher Lloyd, the great plantsman of Great Dixter garden and former Guardian columnist, was asked his favourite time of year in the garden, he would always reply, “Now.” So forget hibernating until spring: dress for the weather and get out into your garden or allotment. Here’s what you can get up to.

Plant a pot

Perrone’s law of winter gardening runs like this – the amount of care you are likely to lavish on a plant is in direct proportion to its distance from your back door. So don’t hide winter-flowering treasures such as witch hazel (hamamelis), wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox), winter honeysuckle (Lonicera purpusii) and winter cherry (Prunus ‘Autumnalis’) away at the back of the garden: if they are planted in pots, bring them close to doors, windows and pathways so you can enjoy the colour and scent: if they are planted in the ground, cut generous armfuls of stems to display in vases indoors.

Rug up

Working in the garden is so much more pleasant if you can keep warm long enough to get a few jobs done. I love my Dickies Redhawk overalls; no draughts can whistle up your back, and you can either wear thermals underneath or an extra layer on top. The key is keeping extremities warm: wear silk glove liners under ordinary gardening gloves so you can still tie a length of twine and prune your apple and pear trees.

Help wildlife

Resist the urge to tidy up. I’m itching to cut back the unruly ivy in my garden, but I’m holding back until spring, because right now it’s providing valuable thick cover for wildlife: its flowers and berries are valuable winter food sources, too. Many creatures will be sheltering in leaf litter and the hollow stems of dead perennials. Hedgehogs should be hibernating in drifts of dead leaves and log piles, so avoid strimming or burning leaf piles. They may still venture out on mild evenings at this time of year: leave dog or cat food, or mealworms, out as an extra food source. Finally, have a clearout in the shed, but take care – many beneficial insects such as lacewings, ladybirds and butterflies may be treating your shed like a giant insect hotel, hibernating in nooks and crannies; don’t turf them out.

AnAn Inside Look....

The Firs Elgar’s birthplace Elgar’s Birthplace is a historical museum in Lower Broadheath, Worcester dedicated to the British composer, Edward Elgar. Many of Elgar’s work have entered into the British and international classical concert repertoire. Elgar was born in the cottage in Broadheath on the 2nd June 1857 and lived there two years after until his family moved to Worcester. Set not far from the Malvern Hills, the family home was a great place to inspire creativity. His mother was passionate about them living in the countryside and being close to God. Elgar’s Father was a piano tuner, amateur violinist and church organist, it was through his father that Elgar was introduced to music. His father often stayed in Worcester during the week with his business, this eventually resulted in the whole family moving away from Broadheath to Worcester permanently.

Elgar and his brother and sisters’ had a musical upbringing. By the age of 8, Elgar was learning to play both the violin and the piano. On the odd occasion, his father would take him into the homes of prominent figures to display his talent. Upon leaving school, to his great disappointment, his father was unable to afford to take him to Leipzig Conservatory. Instead he worked in a solicitor’s office as a clerk. However, he only stayed for a few months until he left to pursue a career in music. The museum unravels the story of Elgar and his pursuit to musical success. There are original manuscripts and around 11,000 letters from and to Elgar, his friends and family; proofs, programmes and other items connected with Elgar’s music; family photographs and scrapbooks; items connected with his travels and with his hobbies including golf and cycling; personal possessions, awards and honours, and film of his later years. The cottage was established as a museum in 1934, on Elgar’s death, by his daughter Carice Elgar Blake The museum comprises the Birthplace Cottage and its garden, and the modern Elgar Centre, opened in 2000, which houses further exhibitions and a function room. Eat,shop, stay: Brand new Tea-room with outdoor area within the Visitor Centre (near car park). Elgar memorabilia and music for sale within the Tea-room. Picnic spaces around the Visitor Centre.

A DOG IS FOR LIFE NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS As we approach the festive season, Dogs Trust asks people to remember its famous slogan, 'A Dog Is For Life, Not Just For Christmas' as the staff prepare for an influx of abandoned dogs over the Christmas period. Unfortunately, the famous Dogs Trust slogan remains as relevant today as it was when it was first coined 38 years ago. Time and again the charity sees a flurry of dogs abandoned over Christmas when the appeal of a cute puppy wears thin. Adrian Burder, Dogs Trust Chief Executive says “There is no denying that we're a nation of animal lovers, but sadly sometimes that love can blind people and they may rush into getting a dog, often without ample research or even rushing into a last minute online purchase. A dog can be such a rewarding addition to any family, but they do come with long-term responsibilities that will have a lasting impact on their new owner's life. "As always, we are reminding everyone that a dog is for life, not just for Christmas, and, if you are thinking about getting a dog in 2018, to consider rehoming a rescue dog." As well as providing round-the-clock care for new arrivals, the team at our Dogs Trust rehoming centres will be spending their Christmas Day looking after the hundreds of homeless hounds already at the rehoming centres, ensuring they can enjoy the Christmas festivities as much as everybody else. Adrian says "Whether its the last Tuesday of the month, Bank Holiday Monday or Christmas Day our dogs still need feeding, walking and cuddling, and the kennels need cleaning! We make it as fun as possible, and we do our best to spoil the dogs as it is their Christmas too. So, from playing Christmas carols around the rehoming centre to decorating the kennels, we try to give everyone, two and four-legged, a jolly good time! It's not just those working at the rehoming centres that go the extra mile for the dogs, as Adrian continues "We are very grateful to supporters up and down the country who send in presents for the dogs, which they are given just before a special Christmas supper. We wouldn't be able to do this without them, and our incredibly dedicated team of staff and volunteers who give up their Christmas Day in order to make it special for the residents at Dogs Trust."

7 Winter Safety Tips for Seniors Help older people prepare for power outages and more unique challenges of wintertime weather. During the winter months, ice, snow and cold temperatures can make life challenging for anyone. Slippery sidewalks and cold weather can cause a wide range of injuries and illnesses, especially for seniors.

Avoid Slipping on Ice

Icy, snowy roads and sidewalks make it easy to slip and fall. “Unfortunately, falls are a common occurrence for senior citizens, especially during the winter months,” says Dr. Stanley Wang, a physician at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif. Often these falls cause major injuries such as hip and wrist fractures, head trauma and major lacerations. While younger people often recover relatively quickly from such injuries, older adults face complications which Dr. Wang says are a leading cause of death from injury in men and women over the age of 65.

Dress for Warmth

Cold temperatures can lead to frostbite and hypothermia -- a condition where the body temperature dips too low. According to the CDC, more than half of hypothermia-related deaths were of people over the age of 65. So, don’t let indoor temperatures go too low and dress in layers. Going outside? Wear warm socks, a heavy coat, a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. In very cold temperatures, cover all exposed skin. Use a scarf to cover your mouth and protect your lungs. Your body temperature should never dip below 95 degrees - if it does get medical assistance immediately.

Fight Wintertime Depression

Because it can be difficult and dangerous to get around, many seniors have less contact with others during cold months. This can breed feelings of loneliness and isolation. To help avoid these issues, family members can check in on seniors as often as possible or send their loved one to adult day care; a short, daily phone call can also make a big difference. Seniors can also arrange a check-in system with neighbors and friends, where each person looks in on one or two others daily.

Prepare for Power Outages

Winter storms can lead to power outages. Make sure you have easy access to flashlights and a battery-powered radio in case the power goes out. Stockpile warm blankets. Longer power outages can spoil the food in your refrigerator and freezer so keep a supply of non-perishable foods that can be eaten cold on hand. If the power goes out, wear several layers of clothing, including a hat. Move around a lot to raise your body temperature. Check out this winter weather checklist from the CDC to make sure you have everything you may need.

Check the Car

Driving during the winter can be hazardous for anyone. But it is especially dangerous for older people, who may not drive as often anymore or whose reflexes may not be as quick as they once were. Get your car serviced before wintertime hits -- or ask a family member to bring it to a garage for you. Checking things like the oil, tires, battery and wipers can make a big difference on winter roads. Also make sure your AAA membership is up-to-date in case of emergencies. If driving is necessary during the winter, review safe and reliable senior transportation options. Wintertime certainly poses challenges for seniors, but with a bit of planning and awareness, you will stay healthy and experience the joys of springtime soon enough.

When A Loved One Passes

B

ereavement usually means losing someone we love through death and also follows on from change and loss. It is a devastating event, turning our world upside down and changing our lives forever. The death of a loved one is probably the worst loss we will ever experience. Grief is the reaction of over-riding intense pain and emotion that follows on from the death of someone who has been close to us. There is no single way to grieve. Everyone is different and each person grieves in his or her own way, and there is no telling how long it will take. Grief can express itself in many different ways, often with very powerful, frightening and confusing feelings. Because each person within the family grieves in their own particular way and at their own pace, it is important to take one another into consideration. Talk to each other about thoughts and feelings. Although no two people’s experiences will ever be the same, there are some common feelings which you may experience at different times in your grief. As well as a deep sadness, you may feel anger, fear, guilt, anxiety, loneliness, despair, preoocupation with the loved one that has died, denial, restless over-activity or apathy. All these feelings are natural reactions, but the intensity may leave you feeling that you are not managing everyday life in the way you would like to. Most bereaved people suffer from depression at some stage in their grief. The main thing to remember is that this is not a permanent state. It will pass when its purpose has been achieved. Although some people may need professional help if it deepens and persists. Accept that it isn’t unusual not to feel your ‘normal’ self. Be gentle with yourself for grief is an exhausting thing. Some return to routine can help as long as you try to balance this with time to reflect on what has happened to you. Try sticking to a regular routine of eating, sleeping, exercise and relaxation. Look after yourself. Your self-esteem may have taken a real knock. Acknowledge yourself each time you achieve something, even if it is getting up in the morning or staying in bed to give yourself a rest. We can be very good at noticing all our mistakes and ignoring our good points, especially when we are feeling down. Remembering happy times with the person who has died can be painful but nontheless healing. Looking at photographs, making a memory book and keeping meaningful mementoes may help. Take things slowly. You might want to delay making big changes such as moving house, starting a new relationship or changing job. You have already suffered a huge loss and need to adjust to that first. Usually it helps to seek support from several sources. No one can grieve for you. You have to find your own path through your grief, but you do not have to walk the road alone.

TIPS ON HOW TO STICK TO YOUR NEW YEARS HEALTH KICK Chances are at some time in your life, you’ve made a New Year’s resolution — and then broken it. This year, stop the cycle of resolving to make change and then not following through. If your resolution is to take better care of yourself and get healthy, you will have a much better year if your resolution sticks. Here are ten tips to help you get started.

BE REALISTIC

The surest way to fall short of your goal is to make your goal unattainable. For instance, resolving to NEVER eat your favorite food again is setting you up to fail. Instead, strive for a goal that is attainable, such as avoiding it more often than you do now.

PLAN AHEAD

Don’t make your resolution on New Year’s Eve. If you wait until the last minute, it will be based on your mindset that particular day. Instead, it should be planned well before December 31st arrives.

OUTLINE YOUR PLAN

Decide how you will deal with the temptation to skip that exercise class or have that piece of cake. This could include calling on a friend for help, practicing positive thinking and self-talk, or reminding yourself how your “bad” will affect your goal.

TALK ABOUT IT

Don’t keep your resolution a secret. Tell friends and family members who will be there to support your resolve to change yourself for the better or improve your health. The best-case scenario is to find a buddy who shares your New Year’s resolution and motivate each other.

REWARD YOURSELF

This doesn’t mean that you can eat an entire box of chocolates if your resolution is to eat a better diet. Instead, celebrate your success by treating yourself to something you enjoy that doesn’t contradict your resolution. If you have been sticking to your promise to eat better, for example, reward yourself with new fitness clothing or by going to a movie with a friend.

TRACK YOUR PROGRESS

Keep track of each small success. Short-term goals are easier to keep, and each small accomplishment will help keep you motivated. Instead of focusing on losing 30 pounds, focus on losing the first five. Keep a food journal to help you stay on track, and reward yourself for each five pounds lost.

DON’T BEAT YOURSELF UP

Obsessing over the occasional slip won’t help you achieve your goal. Do the best you can each day, and take one day at a time.

KEEP TRYING

If you have totally run out of steam when it comes to keeping your resolution by mid-February, don’t despair. Start over again! Recommit yourself for 24 hours. You can do anything for 24 hours. The 24-hour increments will soon build on each other and, before you know it, you will be back on track.

IAN HISLOP AND NICK NEWMAN’S NEW COMEDY TRIAL BY LAUGHTER AT MALVERN THEATRES 22-26 JANUARY 2019

Following critical acclaim and huge demand for tickets, Trademark Touring and Watermill Theatre are pleased to announce a UK tour extension for Ian Hislop and Nick Newman’s new play, Trial By Laughter. The show will be touring to Malvern Theatres from Tuesday 22nd to Saturday 26th January. After the sell-out success of The Wipers Times in the West End and across the country, Ian Hislop and Nick Newman have once again taken inspiration from real life events for their new play Trial by Laughter, based on their critically acclaimed original BBC Radio 4 drama of the same name. The production is a Trademark Touring and Watermill Theatre co-production. In 1817 bookseller, publisher and satirist William Hone stood trial for parodying religion, the despotic government and the libidinous monarchy. The only crime he had committed was to be funny. In 2018, the satirists Ian Hislop and Nick Newman rediscover this forgotten hero of free speech and ask if just over two hundred years later our press has any greater freedom. The current cast includes Helena Antoniou (Lady Hertford), Philippe Edwards (Sidmouth), Jeremy Lloyd (Prince Regent), Peter Losasso (Cruickshank), Nicholas Murchie (Justice Abbott/ Duke of York), Joseph Prowen (Hone), Eva Scott (Lady Conyngham/Sarah) and Dan Tetsell (Lord Ellenborough). Satirist, writer and journalist Ian Hislop has been the editor of Private Eye since 1986. He has frequently appeared on Question Time (BBC One), and since 1990 has been team captain on BBC’s Have I Got News for You. At Private Eye he works with life-long friend Nick Newman, an award-winning cartoonist and writer, who alongside his role at Private Eye, has been pocket cartoonist for The Sunday Times since 1989. As a scriptwriting duo, Ian and Nick’s work includes five years on Spitting Image (ITV), Harry Enfield and Chums (BBC Two), and My Dad’s the Prime Minister (BBC One), as well as the film A Bunch of Amateurs and The Wipers Times, which won the Broadcast Press Guild Award for single drama, and was nominated for a BAFTA. Trial by Laughter is Ian and Nick’s third play to be co-produced with The Watermill Theatre and Trademark, following adaptations of A Bunch of Amateurs and The Wipers Times. Ian Hislop and Nick Newman said: “In an age of ‘fake news’ and increased censorship, free speech and press freedom are still under threat as they were 200 years ago when William Hone took on the might of Royalty and a bullying Tory government. Hone dared to ask ‘Is laughter treason?’ raising issues which are as relevant now as they were then. It’s a tale of lawyers, lechers and libel – with added sedition and blasphemy. It is immensely exciting to bring this world to life on stage, with this funny, inspiring and true story of a satirical David versus Goliath.”

Trial by Laughter Tuesday 22nd – Saturday 26th January Eves 7:30pm | Wed & Sat mats 2:30pm Box office: 01684 892277 www.malvern-theatres.co.uk

The Australian Open - January 14th 2019 Can Federer retain his Crown?

2018 has been a big year for the big guns of our sport. Living legend Roger Federer left Melbourne with a 20th Grand Slam trophy, while Caroline Wozniacki captured her first. Serena Williams continues to defy the odds, returning to the tour in emphatic fashion after the birth of her daughter. At the same time, Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic staked further claims to their greatness. South Korean Hyeon Chung led the charge of young guns with his impressive semifinal run at Australian Open 2018. In the same fold, Naomi Osaka of Japan certainly has our attention after her enthralling US Open victory. Those keen to don the green and gold will be thrilled to see the likes of Ash Barty, John Millman and Nick Kyrgios taking centre court. Feast your eyes on these big hitters and plenty more Aussie superstars at Melbourne Park this summer.
