Oktoberfest is the Worlds largest beer and folk festival. It traditionally takes place in Munich, Germany from mid September and lasts 18 days. The event has attracted an international following - this year 5.9 million people descended on Munich to attend while other cities across the world hold Oktoberfest style celebrations based on the Munich event. During the festival, giant tents capable of holding thousands of revellers are erected and over 6 million litres of beer is drunk. Bavarian music plays in the afternoon and often gives way to more modern pop music in the evening. Oktoberfest began in 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of SaceHildburghausen. The royal newlyweds deemed the party so great that they wanted to repeat it every year and so Oktoberfest has been celebrated in Munich every fall since then.

The Poppy Appeal
During the First World War (1914–1918) much of the fighting took place in Western Europe. Previously beautiful countryside was blasted, bombed and fought over, again and again. The landscape swiftly turned to fields of mud: bleak and barren scenes where little or nothing could grow. Bright red Flanders poppies (Papaver rhoeas) however, were delicate but resilient flowers and grew in their thousands, flourishing even in the middle of chaos and destruction. In early May 1915, shortly after losing a friend in Ypres, a Canadian doctor, Lt Col John McCrae was inspired by the sight of poppies to write a now famous poem called ‘In Flanders Fields’. McCrae’s poem inspired an American academic, Moina Michael, to make and sell red silk poppies which were brought to England by a French woman, Anna Guérin. The (Royal) British Legion, formed in 1921, ordered 9 million of these poppies and sold them on 11 November that year. The poppies sold out almost immediately and that first ever ‘Poppy Appeal’ raised over £106,000; a considerable amount of money at the time. This was used to help WW1 veterans with employment and housing. The following year, Major George Howson set up the Poppy Factory to employ disabled ex-Servicemen. Today, the factory and the Legion’s warehouse in Aylesford produces millions of poppies each year.

IN FLANDERS FIELDS In Flanders' fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place: and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders' fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high, If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders' Fields.

Discover the benefits of learning the piano… Your children’s schedule may be overloaded with enjoyable activities. Are you unsure about adding piano lessons to the list? Discover the many great benefits to playing the piano. Maybe they won't be the next Beethoven, but they may have an easier time learning maths, improve their attention span and increase their self-confidence. Most importantly there is huge enjoyment and sense of achievement in learning, improving and performing music! Studies have shown that amongst all the other benefits, a child’s IQ can increase with the learning of a musical instrument and the same is true for the more mature person too. Research with a group of 60 to 83 year olds showed significant differences in cognitive test results compared to non-musicians and they were able to absorb new information much better. Learning the piano really is a wonderful way of keeping the mind and body active. Choosing the right piano for you can be overwhelming, but the friendly, knowledgeable team at Vale Pianos have a comprehensive selection of pianos and the experience to help you make the right choice. A piano that plays nicely and stays in tune is much more encouraging to play! They are based between Evesham and Pershore, 1 mile from the A44 on the Throckmorton Road. Vale Pianos are open from Monday to Saturday from 10.00am to 5.30pm and you can find their informative website at
www.valepianos.co.uk. Alternatively give them a call on 01386 860419.

The restored forward fuselage, nose and cockpit of the 'last plane to fly out of RAF Defford' over 60 years ago has made a 90 mile journey by road to return to the National Trust Croome. The forward fuselage of Meteor NF11 WD686 night fighter arrived on Tuesday, 28 August and makes an exciting addition to the RAF Defford Museum continuing the story of the secret work at the airbase, near Pershore. During the Second World War and the Cold War years which followed, RAF Defford airfield, was one of the most secret places in the country. For it was at RAF Defford that airborne radar was tested, developed and proven. The airfield was built in the grounds of Croome the ancestral seat of the Earls of Coventry. Radar was a war-winning weapon. Amongst many other outstanding achievements, the arrival in service of ASV radar developed by scientists at Malvern and proven at Defford, helped defeat the U-boats and win the Battle of the Atlantic. Up until then, Nazi submarines were sinking allied ships faster than shipyards of Britain and America could build them. Radar helped defeat the menace of the night bomber and the blitz, and enabled Bomber Command to strike back at Germany. And later, in the Cold War, Britain with NATO allies needed radar to stay ahead of Soviet submarines and the threat of nuclear attack from the air. In 1957, however, RAF Defford had to close to flying as the main runway was not long enough nor strong enough to take the new V-bombers then coming into service, and the radar research moved to RAF Pershore.

The very last aircraft to leave RAF Defford before closure was a Meteor NF11 night fighter, serial number WD686, which flew out in April 1958. Incredibly, WD686 has survived, but the Meteor was at risk, deteriorating in the open and exposed to the elements next to the sea in Norfolk. The volunteers of the Defford Airfield Heritage Group (DAHG), who have a mission to research and preserve the history of RAF Defford, work in close partnership with the National Trust at Croome. DAHG resolved to rescue WD686, but lacked the necessary workshop and hangar display space at Croome. The outcome was that DAHG secured generous sponsorship from Vernon Hill, chairman of Metro Bank, but then asked Mr Hill to transfer the funding to the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection (BDAC), who had the skills and facilities to restore the Meteor. BDAC now own WD686 but as part of the funding deal, will bring the restored aircraft back to Croome for display next to the RAF Defford Museum buildings. Work at BDAC has now reached the stage where the forward fuselage, cockpit and nose have been restored to a high standard, ready for display at Croome for two months. Visitors can see the forward fuselage, which includes the fully furnished cockpit, canopy and nose of Meteor WD686 until the end of October. Croome is open throughout the year. The park and lakeside are open from 9am until 5.30pm and Croome Court is open from 11am to 4.30pm every day. The RAF Defford Museum is open 11am to 4.30pm and free to visit to National Trust members and paying visitors. Normal admission applies to the house and parkland.

Go Sober for October Go Sober for October is an annual campaign, which asks people to pledge to go booze-free in order to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support and become a ‘Soberhero’. Macmillan is hoping that people will give up alcohol for the 31 days of October and raise a glass of water instead of their favourite booze in an effort to support the charity with their work supporting those with cancer. Fundraising will help Macmillan nurses, physiotherapists, dietitians and other professionals to offer support to those with cancer and improve their lives. If you’ve been thinking about trying to Go Sober for October, the good news is the benefits of giving up alcohol for a month (or longer) extend far beyond a break from hangovers. To start with, not drinking for one month can lead to a long-term drop in alcohol consumption, according to research by Sussex University. They found that 72% of participants had maintained reduced levels of harmful drinking six months after completing the study. If this seems like challenge you want to do, fill in the online form at www.gosober.org.uk and become a Soberhero. However, if you have a special occasion in October which you would like to celebrate with a beverage, you can get a golden ticket. Tjis ticket entitles you to a night off from your Go Sober challenge. You can buy one for yourself or sweet talk a mate into getting you one for a minimum £15 donation.

Tips for the Winter How to Protect Your Plants Through Winter It is extremely important to protect you tender and borderline plants in the upcoming months when temperatures start to drop. However, it’s not always practical to move your plants inside away from the cold. The best alternative is to wrap your plants in a protective cover which will shield them from the frost. Here is our step by step guide on how to look after your plants this winter: • • • • •
Before wrapping your plant, it is important to check for damp. Any damp left within the cover may cause rot. Remove any damp debris away from the base of the plant and add dry material such as straw to the crown. Wrap your plant with fleece, hessian, bracken, straw, polystyrene or even bubble wrap. If you have a larger plant, you may need to build a structure for the insulating material. You can use chicken wire for this. Put some wooden posts into the ground and wrap the chicken wire around the posts, you can then cover this in the insulating material. For small plants, you can put a larger flower pot over the plant in order to protect it. Through the winter, make sure you shake any frost or snow off.

I jumped at the opportunity to eat at Ostlers and review the restaurant as I had not been there for a good few years. I always remember the food being very high quality and presented superbly and was eager to see if the restaurant had managed to keep the high standards. When entering the establishment I was very warmly greeted and promptly seated, the decor is classy, warming and homely. I had the Portebello Mushroom to start, the Pan fried duck breast for main, followed by the Chocolate Indulgence. My partner Katie had the Rolled pan- fried goats cheese log to start, Fillet Steak Diane for the main and followed with the Chocolate Torte we also given Focaccia with extra virgin olive oil and balsamic prior to the meal. I tried each and every course (much to Katies annoyance) and I can honestly say that the quality of the food has not only maintained the high standards but Ostlers have moved on to another level. I was in site of the kitchen door and could see other meals coming out and each and every time I was getting food envy. There will be another visit from me very soon. I highly recommend that if you have not been or been recently you should book in now, you will not be disappointed. On top of all of this, the service was second to none; throughout the meal the staff were attentive, polite and efficient.

DON'T LEAVE IT TO CHANCE UNCHECKED APPLIANCES COULD POSE A RISK TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY
Anyone who has gas appliances or fittings in their property needs to be aware of the risks of unsafe gas work. This section provides valuable information on gas safety in the home and how to ensure you and your family stay safe. It is an important time of the year where, after a break, we will be beginning our use of gas appliances and it is important to consider getting them checked. Gas appliances should be safety checked every year and serviced regularly by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Find out why it’s so important and what checks your engineer will carry out. If you notice any of the following warning signs, you’ll want to get your appliance serviced right away:
• The gas appliance is not working properly • The appliance is burning with a lazy yellow flame rather than a crisp blue one • Black marks/stains are evident around the gas appliance • The pilot light keeps going out • There is increased condensation in the room Prior to any work being carried out it is important to agree with your registered engineer their scope of the work so that everyone is clear. For example, there are differences between an appliance service and a safety check and equally between a safety check of appliances and a safety check of the whole installation, which includes all pipework and appliances.

What is an Appliance Safety Check? • An appliance safety check at a minimum includes all of the checks and tests to ensure the appliance is safe to operate, for example: • It is correctly set and adjusted to ensure the gas is burning correctly • It is of a type suitable for the room in which it is located • It is physically stable, securely fitted and properly connected to the gas pipework • There is an adequate and permanent air supply suitable for the appliance type installed • Any flues or chimneys are operating correctly • All safety devices function correctly • What is an Appliance Service? An appliance service will include all of the above checks and tests and any other specific checks, for inspection and/or cleaning of the appliance as specified and detailed in the appliance manufacturer’s instructions. What is a Gas Installation Safety check? If a gas installation safety check (all appliances and internal pipework) is required or specified each appliance will need to be checked as outlined above and additionally: • All accessible gas pipework is visually inspected to ensure the installation is in good condition, and; • The gas pipework is tested to ensure there are no gas leaks

The Spy Who Dumped Me is hilarious, I haven’t laughed this embarrassingly loud in a cinema in a very long time. But in all honesty, I wasn’t that embarrassed because everyone else watching it were laughing just as hard as me. In the film we are introduced to two American girls who unexpectedly find themselves being chased by assassins through Europe. One of the girls find out she dated an Ex-CIA agent and is in possession of something quite valuable that all the bad people are after. Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon perform brilliantly as unexpecting characters who turn out to be fairly good agents. There are so many twists and turns in the plot, you will not be able to guess the ending. My favourite quote? When meeting the head of the international consortium of spies, Morgan describes her as “the Beyoncé of the gov-ernment.” Proving that women can climb the ladder in the man’s world. This is just one of the messages that the film presents.

AnAn Inside Look....
The Firs Elgar’s birthplace Elgar’s Birthplace is a historical museum in Lower Broadheath, Worcester dedicated to the British composer, Edward Elgar. Many of Elgar’s work have entered into the British and international classical concert repertoire. Elgar was born in the cottage in Broadheath on the 2nd June 1857 and lived there two years after until his family moved to Worcester. Set not far from the Malvern Hills, the family home was a great place to inspire creativity. His mother was passionate about them living in the countryside and being close to God. Elgar’s Father was a piano tuner, amateur violinist and church organist, it was through his father that Elgar was introduced to music. His father often stayed in Worcester during the week with his business, this eventually resulted in the whole family moving away from Broadheath to Worcester permanently.
Elgar and his brother and sisters’ had a musical upbringing. By the age of 8, Elgar was learning to play both the violin and the piano. On the odd occasion, his father would take him into the homes of prominent figures to display his talent. Upon leaving school, to his great disappointment, his father was unable to afford to take him to Leipzig Conservatory. Instead he worked in a solicitor’s office as a clerk. However, he only stayed for a few months until he left to pursue a career in music. The museum unravels the story of Elgar and his pursuit to musical success. There are original manuscripts and around 11,000 letters from and to Elgar, his friends and family; proofs, programmes and other items connected with Elgar’s music; family photographs and scrapbooks; items connected with his travels and with his hobbies including golf and cycling; personal possessions, awards and honours, and film of his later years. The cottage was established as a museum in 1934, on Elgar’s death, by his daughter Carice Elgar Blake The museum comprises the Birthplace Cottage and its garden, and the modern Elgar Centre, opened in 2000, which houses further exhibitions and a function room. Eat,shop, stay: Brand new Tea-room with outdoor area within the Visitor Centre (near car park). Elgar memorabilia and music for sale within the Tea-room. Picnic spaces around the Visitor Centre.

Worms get a wiggle on to convert waste to compost The Firs, the birthplace of Sir Edward Elgar is going green making their own compost. A donation of a wormery to the gardening team, who look after the cottage garden, means kitchen scraps can be recycled. The wormery was kindly donated by Bubblehouse Worm Farm in Bransford, Worcester who aim to promote sustainability through global ‘worming’. “Our aim is to encourage sustainable living and inspire people to turn their food waste into something wonderful,” said Ken Nelson of Bubblehouse Worm Farm. “and believe no food should be wasted.” Worms are not only essential to plant growth, but are also the most effective way of converting your food waste into nutrient rich worm casts, natures finest fertiliser. Kitchen scraps, fallen fruit and waste paper are added to the wormery where the worms work their magic. “By recycling the waste from the kitchen,” said Dawne Middleton, The Firs Gardener. “we will be able to produce first class, nutrient rich compost in an environmentally sustainable way and use it to enrich the soil within all areas the garden, we will also show our wiggly friends to any inquisitive little learners who want to take a peek.” For more information please call: 01905 333330 or visit the website www.nationaltrust.org.uk/the-firs

The Car Check List We all know that we should take care of our car every week around the year, but if we are honest, how many of us actually check the water levels, and tyre pressure every week! However when it comes to the winter, a quick mini service, which anyone can do, may well save a lot of time, trouble and money. • • • • • •
Check the anti freeze, this prevents the water coolant from freezing Check windscreen wipers to ensure that in driving rain and snow you always have clear vision. Check water level for windscreen washer, this will clear away the slush and dirt when driving in the snow. Check tyre tread – including your spare, and ensure you have plenty of tread on your tyres to cope with icy and wet conditions. Check the oil level Check all lights and indicators and horn are working
You will never know if you might ever get caught in a really cold snap so it is always worth carrying a blanket, a snow shovel, extra clothing and if you are going on a long journey, thena flask of hot drink would not go amiss.

Rogers- More Than Just A Barbershop Rogers barbershop is based just off the Bromyard Road in St John's. We may be tucked around the corner....but a lot of people seem to know us! As we have been here for over 35 years now the shop has seen many changes over the years....I don't just mean the hairstyles that we do. We have had up to 4 generations of the same family come in, from young children to the more mature. We are a family friendly shop and with the University just down the road, new students come in each year. We keep up to date with all the latest styles on our Instagram page but keep to our traditional roots too. In recent years men have started looking after their image instead of just 'shower and go' but now they have plenty of hair, body and facial products to choose from so our trade has changed from guys needing a haircut to keeping their style fresh. If you would like to visit our shop which has a great atmosphere and banter not forgetting the 'Haircut while you wait' come in and give us a try. See you soon Chris and the team at Rogers.

When A Loved One Passes When a love one passes away we are left feeling lost and alone. Such a devastating event turns our world upside down. Understanding what grief is, experts say is crucial to overcoming the grief. It is important to recognise how you are feeling and to be able to come to terms with those feelings. There is no single way to grieve, everyone will experience grief differently.
6. Recognize That Time Is Infinite Carpe Diem. Seize the day! See time as a currency that you have to spend. Make time for friends and family and for doing the things you love. Tick things off your bucket list. Do the skydive you’ve always wanted or take a holiday. 7. Create Value From This Experience Learn from this experience, remember how you got yourself through it. Think about what you learnt about yourself.
Dr Phil identifies how to deal with grief in simple steps in his book, Real Life: Preparing for the 7 Most Challenging Days of Your Life. 1. Be Patient With Yourself It is important to understand that grief has no understanding of time. While it may take some months, it may take others years to stop feeling grief. It is important to focus on the present, do small tasks throughout the day, have weekly goals to focus on. Keep one foot in front of the other.
8. Think About How You Will Prepare for Your Own Death Make sure your family know what to do when the time comes. Prepare yourself financially and make a will. 10. Celebrate Life! Remember all the happy memories you and your loved one shared. Celebrate their life as well as yours. Your loved one would not want you to remain unhappy.
2. Adjust Your Expectations Grief is different to everyone, don’t let yourself or anyone else have expectations on how long or in what way you should grief. 3. Accept What You Cannot Change There will be a big feeling of being helpless, and a lot of things will be out of your control. A big part of grieving is being able to accept the things you can’t change and focus on things that you can. 4. Find Strength In Others Friends and family will be of most importance to you in such a situation. Open up to those who have had similar experiences. Talk about your emotions, they may have great advice. 5. Don’t Get Stuck Don’t get stuck within the negativity. Find a new hobby, get back into work when you feel ready, if needed, see your doctor.

Just remember to take things slowly, accept the pain you are feeling but also look forward to the future and live in the now. Adapted from Dr. Phil’s book Real Life: Preparing for the 7 Most Challenging Days of Your Life.
HOW ARE WE FUNDED? St Richard’s is an independent hospice that relies mainly on voluntary income to enable us to continue to provide our services. It costs £8.4m (2017/18) a year to run all our services. We need to raise 76% of our annual costs to run the hospice from voluntary donations. The remainder is contributed by the NHS. Voluntary donations include gifts of money and standing orders or gifts in kind, legacies and grants from trusts and other grant-making bodies. We also benefit from company and business sponsorship, payroll giving, employee fundraising, donations from organisations and donations in memoriam. We have our own volunteer fundraising groups who organise regular events and assist with shop and street collections as well as supporters who place collecting boxes in local community outlets. Another way or raising income is through our charity shops selling donated goods and other hospice merchandise. In addition we benefit from the local hospices lottery. Cost No charge is made to patients and families for any of our services. This is made possible due to the generosity of our donors and supporters. If you would like to support St. Richard’s Hospice, please visit: www.strichards.org.uk

Can You Give A Dog A Home? George George is a 14 month old white and tan staffie cross, looking for a quiet home, where he will get lots of love and understanding, as he has not had a good start in life. He is sweet natured, friendly and affectionate. Being a youngster, he has lots of energy and would benefit from training classes. He loves company and long walks. George is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. If you feel you could offer George his forever home, please ring Geraldine on 01886 822083.
Susie Susie is a lovely 9 year old white and black Staffie, who is a very friendly and affectionate girl. She has been well looked after and a much loved member of the family, who has sadly had to come into care through no fault of her own. Susie loves everyone and is used to living with older children. She enjoys her walks and is good on the lead. She is housetrained, spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and will be rehomed with 6 week's free pet insurance. Please ring Geraldine on 01886 822083 if you feel you could offer Susie the loving home she so deserves.
