Misleading advertising and malpractice by Iberdrola? Surely Not! Tomatoes for Depression pg 36

FACUA (Consumers in Action) are warning of misleading and fraudulent advertising by Iberdrola and the other electricity generating companies. They have uncovered the truth behind the grid companies’ offers of discounts and reveal that instead of paying less for their supply, people actually end up paying around 11% more! Iberdrola, HC Energia, E-on and Gas Fenosa are offering discounts ranging from 10 - 15% but only when other, additional services are contracted also. The customer is not always (rarely) aware of the additional services being contracted and, they don’t always show on their bills straight away. As if this was not bad enough, the

discount being offered is not a discount on the rate set by the government but on a much higher tariff. By paying a higher rate at the outset, you are in fact paying for increases before they actually happen. The report shows that salespeople are even calling at the customer’s property and portraying offers which “do not exist” or, are only available when additional services are contracted such as Payment Protection Service and Emergency Call-Out Service which is charged at various rates depending on your contracted power supply (potencia). Also, FACUA calculate that in the second year of connection, the additional cost (over and above the TUR rate) will be in the

region of €75.52 for the average consumer – the average consumption being just 366 kilowatts per month. Obviously the additional cost will increase for those who use more than this. People who have been convinced to join Iberdrola on the promise of discounts or, have had their tariff changed without being asked and ultimately end up paying more because of the associated services and higher rates, are being invited to report their experiences. If this describes you, please send an email to info@theword.es giving as much information as possible. Together with FACUA we will publicise any irregularities to warn others.

Editor’s comments

Dear Readers Another month goes by and more rave reviews about our newspaper. A massive Thank You! For everyone who has taken the time to email in. Due to popular demand we are increasing our print run by 50% so hopefully less people will be disappointed when they go to collect their copy. Our idea to staple the newspaper has proven to be a good one as many people are telling us they were passed a copy from a friend.

A reminder to those with internet, you can read current and back-copies on-line and although it is nice to feel the paper, if you don’t manage to pick up a copy, you don’t have to miss out altogether. We still need more of you to send in anything that may be of interest to others things that are not in the mainstream news. We have decided to extend the free to enter competition for the long life light bulbs (page 28) because surprisingly,

not many people have entered. This is an amazing giveaway which will help to save one lucky householder some money on their electricity bill. Great news about the new Satellite which will provide TV for all us expats although I still recommend you put your name on the register (page 20) because we all know how things can change here in sunny Spain. We will of course bring you any further news on this as it happens.

To our commercial readers: the first thing most companies cut in time of crisis is their advertising budget, we understand this and want to help so please give us a call or send an email, you may be surprised what we can offer. Also, it pays to reach out to people who may not be seeing your current advertising.

BBC Announcement States the Facts

Speculation over the furture of satellite TV in Spain is no longer necessary A re cent of f icial announcement by the BBC has clarified what we have suspected for some time. The switch to the new satellite which has a much smaller footprint means many parts of Spain will not be able to receive any of their favourite channels. The switch itself will take place sometime in summer 2013 and people will start to lose channels, like the recent disappearance of Channel 5, in the second quarter of the year. The south of Spain will be worst hit with absolutely no chance of receiving English satellite programmes. That said, there are still parts of western Spain (Costa Blanca

and Costa Calida) that will be able to, although the signal strength will be weaker.

How do we know this? Channel 5 was moved to the new satellite for testing and there are definite areas that are able to receive it and those that cannot. For many who can, it will be a simple case of dish realignment and for others, a larger dish to accommodate the weaker signal and of course, alignment of that dish, to the new satellite.

People who currently receive satellite TV will be affected in different ways:

Case 1: You purchased the equipment outright and pay no rental charge. In this case you will need to source a bigger dish (if less than 1.2 metres) and/or pay someone to fit and align it.

Case 2. You pay a monthly subscription for your service: Your current provider should be able to replace the dish (if less than 1.2 metres) and realign to the new satellite. There will most likely be a charge which could be in the form of a one-off payment or, increased rental charges.

It is unlikely but not impossible that you would be required to pay both. Whichever one you are, you should register with Iberswitch TV and as new developments happen, they will let you know (via email) to keep you fully informed. Not only will you benefit from this information, by registering on-line you are securing your place in the queue should you select them to get your system operational. Iberswitch will be offering a fixed price for new dish and alignment and alignment on its own. This way you know up front what it will cost to get your television channels back. continued on page 3

theWord continued from page 2

Prices for this will be released in the near future to allow people to book in advance. Anyone contracting satellite TV services between now and the switch over should ensure the dish which is being installed measures 1.2 metres or larger. To accommodate the inevitable, for new installs, Iberswitch TV is providing

the larger dish now so that when the time comes, it is only realignment which is necessary. There should be negligible or no break in service by doing this. Branded as NO RISK TV, you don’t pay for the equipment or the installation when taking this service, you simply pay a monthly rental - with no risk.

When the dust settles from this change over, there will be no further issues to worry about for a very long time for satellite users. Of course, this cannot be said for those who receive a rebroadcasted service, they still have the inevitable issues to deal with at some future time.

We have all seen the promises of fast broadband speeds which almost never do as they say on the can. Satellite Internet is different, it doesn’t rely on speeds available through the local exchange and it doesn’t slow down when all the school kids start gaming on-line. If you can see the sky, you can benefit from Satellite Internet and you can take it with you wherever you move to. If you live in an area where broadband is not available or, the speed you have been offered is not sufficient, you should consider your own satellite connection. Streaming TV, downloading movies, phone calls etc needs never be an issue.

is your house leaking electricity?

20% Of Properties Suffer From Leakage It has been estimated by major electricity generating companies in Spain that more than 20% of properties suffer from electricity leakage. A poor electrical installation can cause electricity to simply “bleed” away. An indication that you are suffering from this issue is if your electricity usage has increased significantly in the last few years.

Technical Information

In some cases, a short circuit can be made to the earthing system. This situation is created when a “live” wire (one which carries the electric current) connects to an earthing wire. This is often caused by faulty, old or decaying insulation (material

that covers the wires) which can expose the core of the wire to the elements. If this exposed “live” wire is allowed to touch an earthing wire (or any ground, such as metal water piping or wet earth), a short will be made that can allow an uncontrolled and continued release of electricity to flow into the ground. This results in wasted electricity and often, a very high electricity bill. A RCD (trip switch) is installed in most properties to avoid the dangers of leaking electricity, but many of these divides do not function correctly.

High Electricity Bills

To eliminate this cause as a reason for spiralling electricity bills, a simple, relatively

inexpensive test can be carried-out using a specialist piece of testing equipment called an Earth Leakage Device. This tool allows the test to be carried out without needing to disconnect the supply. The cost of the Earth Leakage Test is €30 and will give you peace of mind that your electrical installation is intact and functioning properly or, will highlight an issue which when resolved, will save you money. cooking on gaS

Exchange electric hob for gas hob Save money by changing your electric hob to gas.

Generally, the electric hob is on e of the highest consuming items in the house. As electricity pries continue to soar this has to be on the list of the top five things that you can do in order to reduce your bill. There are other benefits of converting to gas for hob cooking and at your very next power cut, when you can still boil a kettle, cook and heat water to wash, all will become clear. Of course, there is the gas bottle issue to consider. If the gas delivery man does not come past your house every week you will need to visit the petrol station every now and again but, if it is only the hob that you use gas for, collecting replacement bottles would be a rare necessity. The cost of changing is relatively low, taking the electric one out is quick and easy, as is fitting the gas one. You will

money for old rope bad fats

Faulty meters blamed for massive bills Consumer association FACUA state that 80% of electricity meters are faulty and are costing people millions of euros in unnecessary charges. What most people do not realise is, the meter is generally the same one that was fitted when the property was built and there is no actual provision for maintenance, if they are working, any suspected issues are ignored.

Nice work if you can get it

A Royal Decree was made ordering the installation of the “Smart Meter” which is the more reliable digital alternative to the old analogue “clock style” meters. Everyone will eventually have a new meter but the grid companies have until 2018 to complete the work. As you can imagine, they are in no particular hurry to

complete the work because in the meantime, they are being paid for watts that have not been used. Not a bad income.

What’s the answer?

Another little known fact is; the consumer is responsible for the meter box and its contents, even if they rent them. In that case there are two options to rectify any potential issues with faulty meters. The first course of action is to buy a Smart Meter and pay an electrician to install it. The second is a much healthier option; change to the dual tariff system. By doing this not only do you have a new meter, you also benefit from 14 hours a day of half price electricity.

Great savings

Most people who switch to the dual tariff stem

enjoy a 25% saving on their electricity bill and as the average monthly bill is €80 we are potentially looking at overall annual savings of €240 of course, if your bill is higher than the average, your savings should be greater.

Red tape

If you think this is a good idea, give Iberswitch a call and they will take all the necessary steps to get your meter swapped over and change your tariff. As Spain’s largest USC (Utility Switching Company) they will make sure your rate is the best it can be. Contact them on: 902 027 517 today.

during pregnency make kids overweight

Omega 6 polyunsaturated fatty acids linked to bigger kids Eating the wrong type of fat during pregnancy 'increases the likelihood of having overweight children.' Pregnant women who eat too much of the ‘wrong’ type of fat are likely to have fatter children, warn researchers. They found consumption of high levels of fats found in cooking oils and nuts can affect the body weight of the child years later. Scientists say new evidence suggests women should be eating more fish oils, known as omega 3 fatty acids, to give their children the best start in life. The Mediterranean diet scores again.

It is quite normal to only call an electrician when there is a technical issue, to fix something when it goes wrong. Of course, we also call one when we need a new light or electrical socket fitting but when he comes, does he look at the rest of the installation? Many properties go for years and years without any safety checks and there are an abundance of things that could go wrong and which may ultimately cause major issues, including risk of shock and unnecessary waste. One thing in particular which is found in many properties and which most people are actually unaware of is the installation of a much higher main fuse than there should be which is illegal and in the unlikely event that

an insurance claim was made, is likely to make the policy void and, could even result in a fine. Knowledge is power and in this case, could also be peace of mind. We offer a 50 point safety check which covers the entire installation and gives a written report detailing any issues which should be attended to. The charge for this service is €50 which of course, we believe to be money well spent. Alternatively, you can just opt for the earth leakage test which will tell you if you are throwing money out of the window (see our ad on page 5). The charge for this is €30. hold your water

House bricks - the building blocks to saving money I recently spoke with a friend who owns a bed and breakfast in Granada. He commented that a couple of years ago his water bills were crippling him and although he had reduced all his outgoings, the water bill was proving impossible. Following an old fashioned “remedy” for consuming less water, he placed a house brick in each cistern of each toilet in the house. He told me the “tide has turned” as far as bills were concerned and his annual water cost was massively reduced. I know he has quite a few toilets but could flushing really contribute to the bulk

of his usage? I decided to look at my own meagre sanitary ware installations. I have two toilets which on average, get flushed ten times a day. It took a while and the mess I made in the bathroom did not enamour me with my wife but nevertheless, I was able to establish that a brick in the cistern displaced about one and a half litres of water. Like most modern toilets, we have a dual flush system and the first thing I noticed was the reduced flush with either made very little difference to the performance of the toilet.

This told me that for years, we have been over spending in the water department. I dread to think how many tens of thousands of litres have been unnecessarily flushed away. Excluding those times where we have visitors staying over, I calculated that we would use 6,000 litres (1,600 gallons) of water a year less than normal, possibly even more. This has got to represent a good saving on our bill. I wonder if the same b enef its would b e achievable if I put a brick in the washing machine?

letters to the editor... Dear Ed, I was shopping at Decathlon over the weekend and it was very busy due to the sales. Someone walked into me, or as I thought, I walked into them, and as a natural reaction, my hand went to the pocket where I keep my wallet. Something made me remove it and put it into a different packet where I could keep my hand on it. A couple of minutes later, someone else bumped into me but this time they grabbed my arm to “steady me”. I could have sworn I felt a hand on my chest too but they didn’t seem to have one free. It only dawned on me a little later that by changing pockets, I could have averted the theft of my cash and cards. We all have to be especially careful these days, the so called “crisis” is bringing all the villains out and it seems that those who can afford it least are often the victims. Peter Bigastro

I changed from them a couple of years ago and couldn’t understand why they kept writing to me and by registered post no less. My new supplier told me to ignore the letters and said it was Iberdrola’s way of trying to unnerve me into going back to them. My bills are always paid by direct debit and I have never missed a payment so why am I getting these letters? It is very worrying plus the fact I have to go and sign for them at the post office. Surely Iberdrola are breaking some kind of law sending threatening letters like these? Vince Brown San Fulgencio Dear Vince, Many of our readers have expressed the same concern, please see page 17. Just the other day while I was waiting for my wife to get a few bits, I saw a carload of kids parked in a supermarket car park enjoying a burger meal. When they finished, they simply dropped the rubbish out the window in full view of everyone as if it was the natural thing to do. Maybe I am getting old but whatever happened to respect for other people? Personally, I think that this is why the world is in the state that it is, standards have dropped and it’s all about me, me, me right from the top to the bottom. Dianne Camposol, Mazarron

Solar Central Heating An acceptable alternative to massive winter fuel bills We are all fed up with talking about how electricity prices are spiralling out of control, how much our bills are compared with previous years and how much it costs to heat our homes, homes that were not built with the cold damp winters in mind. Solar power has moved on over the last few years and we can now heat our homes for free during the winter. By free of course I mean without running costs, installing solar systems are not free but then again, they cost nothing like they used to, but before we move on to that... Fotovoltaic panels are the Rolls Royce of the solar world and only three panels are needed to heat an average

home compared with the lesser quality panels which would need to cover the entire roof in order to achieve the same.

Extra advantages of solar heating

The thing that makes this system a “no-brainer” for those who can afford the initial outlay, is the fact that in addition to no heating costs in winter, during the summer months when you are not using the power generated to heat the radiators, you can utilise it for your other electricity needs. During daylight hours your three panels produce 600 watts an hour which can be used for your air conditioning,

Have your bills doubled? There are several possible reasons why your electricity bill may have doubled in the last couple of years. • Prices have increased almost every 3 months during the past couple of years • If you have an electric water heater and live in a hard water area it may be full of scale which will have a dramatic effect on consumption • Your water heater could have a very small leak • The earth connection for your property may be corroded • Your meter may be faulty if it is an old analogue type • The rubber seal on your fridge may be damaged • You may simply be consuming more power because you have more appliances/equipment • You may be on the wrong tariff for your use Whatever the reason, there is a solution and help and advice is only a phone call away

Call Iberswitch on 902 027 517 info@iberswitch.com

pool pump, fans, fridge, and so on. It may not generate the power you need completely but whatever it does provide, you won’t need to draw it from the grid – essentially, putting money into your pocket.

Mind boggling

When you go out, your panels continue to put electricity into your system, even if you don’t use it. When this happens, if you have an analogue meter fitted, it actually turns your meter reading backwards. Let me just repeat that in case you missed it: You go out for the day or maybe a week, when you come back, the reading on

your meter will actually be less than it was before you left. You put unused power back into the system and for that, you are credited. I didn’t believe it at first either but from 2nd January 2012, it became law. If that is not incentive to have solar, I don’t know what is.

Cost justification So, we come to price. How much can we expect to pay for such a wonderful system? Well, a five radiator system, fully installed and guaranteed costs €5,700. We are all watching our pennies and spending our savings is something we have to think very carefully about. Here is one way to look at it:

€5,700 in a high interest savings account will earn you around €160 a year. Savings bonds will earn you around €230 a year so, if we compare this to what you would save in electricity costs from day one with a solar system, you can clearly see that your money earns you far more by sitting on your roof, than it does in a bank. In fact, looking at the overall income and expenditure, most people would be better off financially after just one winter bill which I have to say, I find completely staggering. it’s all about politics A sideways glance at UK current affairs By Quentin Cope Author/Writer/Commentator www.quentincope.co.uk

Trouble dans le Mill..! Well it’s been a busy month for the Wally’s at Westminster exposing more than a little tetchiness between Big ‘C’ and Little ‘C’. So what have been the issues? There is of course the small matter of the Brits lending some big aeroplanes to the French because they forgot to order any from the Yanks. As is normal in such situations and also buried somewhere in page three thousand and one of the purchase contract for the C17 transporters, we had to ask permission from Dave’s mate Obama. But of course there is more! The pensions review announcement has caused a bit of a flurry, especially amongst the sixty four year old MP’s who will never see their state pension raised to a significant high of £144.00 a week. However, the other £1000.00 a week provided by the taxpayer should keep them quiet in the long run. Then there was the snow, the floods, the EU Referendum,

excursions in to Algeria by Big ‘C’, the new council tax rules, bedroom tax on the lonely and of course, the horse meat saga. This had a particularly significant effect on the House of Commons annual budget as under EU Directive four million and twenty one, the menu in the taxpayer subsidised restaurant had to be changed to reflect the true provenance of the food being served. This meant a reprint of several hundred of these documents changing ‘Big Mac & Fries’ to ‘Horse-burger and Chips Espanola’. The biggest political upset was of course the announcement by Dave of the proposed referendum on staying in the EU. Naughty Nick has warned Dave that ‘a promise to hold a referendum on membership of the EU is against the national interest and risks derailing the fragile UK economy’. Surely this is not the same Nick Clegg that in 2004, as an MEP commenting on the EU’s negotiating

mandate, declared it was the right of Britain to ratify any major deal entered in to by the EU. The big question of course is what it could all mean for us Expatriate Brits, resting here, lazing in the midday sun and shirking the onerous baby-sitting duties of our energetic grandchildren in far off Basildon? Well, if the UK moves out of the EU it could simply revert to being a member of the European Economic Area (EEA) like well off Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland and not quite so well off Iceland. Therefore, if the rules of today are anything to go by, there should be no change, except the French and the Germans may no longer speak to us in the pub (dear oh dear!). Upon quick reflection, the Swiss and Norwegians don’t appear to be having too hard a time of it. They seem to

be able to live to a sensibly high standard and have not so far felt the need to resort to taxing empty bedrooms in order to raise a few bob. However, knowing how ‘sniffy’ they can all be in the big boys Euro zone club, Dave has made sure he will be able to pull one out of the hat when required. They don’t know it yet, but a move of brilliance, reminiscent of 1415, is being made on the French. It’s easy. He lends them some big planes to ship tanks to Mali then sends the SAS in to show a few ill equipped, bare footed gentleman masquerading as soldiers, how to survive in the Sahara desert for six months, without firing a shot. At the first sign of a ‘Non’ from Jean-Marc during tough negotiations to have a completely British run EU, Dave will threaten to whip them all away. Will it work? Well, we will of course be watching with a smile, and don’t forget in the end … It’s all about Politics!

NEWS BITES Bank Charges Soar People are being urged to check their bank statement on at least a monthly basis to ensure payments for such things as water, telephone and electricity payments are being taken. During the last twelve months, there have been four separate takeovers such as the latest, Cam Bank being taken over by Banco Sabadell. Customers are told that direct debits and standing orders will be maintained but this has proven to not always be the case. Naturally, apart from the additional bank charges for missed payments, there remains the risk of suspension of service. Driver Obligation Already a legal requirement in other parts of Europe, carrying a breathalyzer kit in your car looks to be heading to Spain. Along with your luminous jackets, hazard sign and light bulbs, two one-use breathalysers will eventually also be added to the list of essentials and as you would expect, there will be a penalty if you are found not to be carrying them. Although the new rule is likely to be enforced soon, there will be a period of several months before fines would be applied.

bread wars

Bakery selling 20 cent loaf closed down by health officials In our last issue we reported how a Valencian bakery had discovered how to produce a loaf cheaper than anyone else, even the large supermarket chains. Surely this must be good for those on the poverty line, good from the point of the bakery being able to employ people?

Are you getting your one-a-day?

The bulk of their production was being done at a unit which has just been closed down for what a spokesperson said was relating to the need for an additional door between the production area and the outside. What is interesting is that the premises are allegedly getting an average of one inspection a week from the commerce, labour and health departments, when the industry average is one every two months.

Under pressure

After opening a low-cost bakery in Vilamarxant, he now plans to open an average of two more every month in Valencia province, to hire 200 new workers and seek providers abroad in order to guarantee supply. I say“Good luck”to Mr. Navarro. Creating new jobs and expanding during a crisis proves his ability and commitment and this, in my opinion should be encouraged and commended. Obstacles should not be placed in his path and anyone, or any official department should be publicly berated and exposed for what they represent.

Sources in the owner’s immediate circle said that the health department's move is just a new chapter in an ongoing commercial war. "They're coming after us," said one person, in reference to pressure from the nearly 800 traditional bakeries in Valencia province. Could this be true? If they are being victimised because of pressure from their competitors then this suggests corruption is in play. I would ask a rhetorical question about the possibility of blatant use of official authority for improper purposes, but with the news stories concerning brown envelopes and Spanish officials, I don’t think I will bother.

Looking after number one

Thinking about it, if thousands of people are spending less, I can see how the general economy could be affected – lower costs mean lower taxes to be paid by the bakery.

Praise where praise is due

While all this is going on, Navarro is forging ahead with his expansion plans.

KEEP CALM & WARM WINTER 2012/2013

But if it is good for the general public, that should be the main concern, yes? (Another rhetorical question).

The standard package for the forthcoming 2012/2013 winter period consists of 3 x Gabarron radiators including the control box and all the associated wiring. Total power consumption is just 2,700 Watts.

practical relaxation By grahame milton-jones Psycotherapist working on the Costa Blanca www.san-luis-clinic.co.uk

Relaxation is complete muscle relaxation of the body and a calm and peaceful state of mind. Simple, yet complicated. Proper relaxation requires a focus of the mind so that all other thoughts are excluded. You cannot relax if you are thinking about your mortgage arrears. Have you ever tried thinking about nothing or making your mind blank? Neither of these is possible so the best thing is to fill your mind with a peaceful thought, thereby allowing you to be released from your problems. The aim of true relaxation is to remove yourself both mentally and physically from the worries of the day and enjoy some peace of mind. This, in turn, enables you to deal with life’s problems. Proper relaxation is deliberate and precise. The most frequent methods are self hypnosis, meditation, yoga, and Tai Chi. These methods all have in common a deliberate relaxation of the body, whilst the mind is engaged in specific activities.

Alcohol Anxiety Bereavement Confidence problems

Self hypnosis enables the body to relax in seconds and the mind to focus on specific aims that will reprogram it for any purpose you intend. The result feels like several hours of sleep, but may only take twenty minutes. Meditation can take many forms, some of which are very hard to master. Proper training is needed or it will be simply daydreaming. Good meditation can solve problems, deal with difficult emotions, and give you a sense of detachment that lets problems pass you by. Yoga is divided into Hatha Yoga and Raja Yoga. Hatha is the practice of physical exercise and postures. It was originally established to enable religious men to prepare their bodies for the rigours of meditation. Raja Yoga is a system of meditation that can take years to master, the aim of which is to achieve a state of one-ness within yourself. Tai Chi is a system of physical movements that are excellent for gently exercising the body. They are carried out at a speed

bed bugs

Facts, Identification & Control Latin Name: Climex Lectularius L. Bed bugs (often misspelled as bedbugs) are small, nocturnal, wingless insects that belong to the family of Cimicidae. They feed on human blood and other warm-blooded hosts. They are oval in shape and grow up to 4-5mm long when fully grown.

also likely to be found in small cracks near a bed or in bed sheets. How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs: A bed bug infestation has nothing to do with cleanliness – you can pick them up in even the finest hotels, and they can

Their skin colour is rust brown to a deeper red brown. Bed bugs are also known as “mahogany flats”, “red coats” and “chinches.” The adult bed bug does not have any wings and has a flattened body. Bed bugs are flat, reddishbrown, oval insects about the size of an apple seed and become swollen and reddish after a blood meal. They live in cracks and crevices including mattress seams, sheets, furniture, behind baseboards, electrical outlet plates and picture frames. They are often found in hotels, where they can travel from room to room and in visitors’ luggage. Bed bugs have existed since the ancient times and are found in temperate climates throughout the world. There are different types of bed bugs, but the common bed bug is adaptable to human environments. Since they can survive in birds’ nests, they can be seen in houses and buildings that have several bird nests, particularly on rooftops. They are also known to feed on bats or household pets, but their typical source of nutrition is human blood. Bed bugs have a great worldwide distribution due to human travellers who transport luggage, clothing, bedding, and furniture. Though they may reside in unusual places, they are

If you find, or suspect you may have bed bugs, you can take a hairdryer to them, they hate heat. It is always advisable to place your mattress in the direct sun too especially after a long winter when the heating has been running and little fresh air in the house. When travelling, always lift your bags off the floor, place on a luggage rack where possible. Bedbugs usually come out at night so always try to keep clothes a couple of metres away from the bed. When you return from a hotel visit, take all your clothes from your suitcase and place in a tumble dryer for about 15 minutes. Remove all clutter from your home, which makes finding bed bugs easier. Wash and dry your bed linens often using the hottest temperature allowed for the fabric. Closely inspect any secondhand furniture for bed bugs before you bring it into your residence. Inspect your house regularly – especially when you first move in.

that is slower than that which is normal for the body. The result is that Tai Chi requires considerable concentration and focus of the mind. It is both graceful yet taxing, and like yoga is good for improving suppleness and reflexes. The ultimate aim of relaxation is to restore the physical and mental balance in your life. Not much to ask for about twenty minutes every few days. The ideal posture, is sitting, with something to support the head. The ideal time per session is about twenty minutes and this should be carried out preferably three times a week. Relaxation is not something that can be done when you have a few minutes to spare. It is not the thirty minutes in front of Coronation Street while the dinner is cooking. It is a much more serious activity that results in life changes both physical and mental. There is no doubt that those who carry out regular relaxation live longer and have a much better quality of life.

Environmental Agency suggest floods could be averted...by building snowmen!

People should build snowmen to prevent the big thaw causing flooding, says Environment Agency. It is usually seen as fun pastime for children when the weather turns colder however, building snowmen has been touted as an effective way of preventing homes flooding. The bizarre advice came as a sudden thaw and torrential rain hit during a weekend at the end of January. The Environment Agency said Britons could help slow the rate of the sudden thaw by building snowmen in their gardens and on driveways. Spokesman Roy Stokes said the compacted snow and ice in snowmen will melt more slowly than snow on the ground meaning there is less surface water at the same time. He said: "Ideally if everybody built

themselves a snowman that will slow the thaw down a bit. If you notice when people clear their driveways, the snow thaws away but the compacted piles stay which will give a balanced thaw, which would be helpful. Maybe they should have enlisted the help of all able-bodied people claiming unemployment benefit. With the sheer volume of people that could pitch-in, the country could have been covered with flood preventing snowmen. Then, as the spectacle was reported abroad, the armies of snowmen lined up along the UK’s motorways shown on television around the world, everyone could see how forward thinking and resourceful the UK government agencies were. The rest of Europe would be lining up to seek advice.

50 SHEDS OF GREY

Fifty Sheds of Grey, a spoof of Fifty Shades of Grey, has been out-selling the original. It is one of dozens of satires published following the success of the Fifty Shades trilogy, dubbed ‘mummy porn’ Author Colin Grey started tweeting in June and quickly notched up 90,513 followers Now he releases 'Fifty Sheds of Grey: A Parody: Erotica for the not-too-modern male' - an erotic book based around a garden shed does not sound like an instant bestseller.

Amateur Shed owner

Written under the pseudonym

Colin Trevor Grey, the book tells the story of a middle-aged man who is ‘thrust into an illicit world of pleasure and pain’ after his wife reads Fifty Shades. Mr. Grey - who describes himself as a 'passionate gardener and amateur shed owner' has been treating followers to pictures of sexy sheds and Carry On-style erotic puns since June. Most are horticulture-themed, but many offer hilarious snapshots of his everyday life. He finds himself caught between his wife’s eagerness to try new things in the bedroom and ‘the love between a man

and his shed’. After accumulating over 90,000 followers thanks to his daily tweets Mr. Grey decided to publish a book of his funniest entries. 'A very nice chap from Pan Macmillan came knocking on my shed door after he saw me on Twitter,' he says. 'He said he thought mine was a story the world had to hear and offered me a contract there and then.

Supermarket Shocker

'Although, I have to admit I was a little wary – the last contract I signed was one my wife drew up after reading 'that book' and it resulted in me spending every

Thursday morning being led round Sainsbury’s in handcuffs and a rubber thong,' he said. When his wife picked up Fifty Shades he said he was unwittingly thrust head-first into the mysterious, illicit world of pleasure and pain - and his happy and simple life changed forever. Looking for a way to express his frustrations, he said he took to Twitter. 'I write my Twitter account alone in my shed. It’s the only place I can get a moment’s peace – at least, it was.' Following the fastest-selling paperback of all time comes Mr. Derby's Fifty Sheds of Grey: A Parody: Erotica for the not-toomodern male.

Dark Secrets

'My wife doesn’t know I’ve written a book yet,' he said. 'I’m hoping she doesn’t find out, to be honest, as it contains intimate details of past indiscretions, including my deflowering at the hands of an older woman –I went into her shed a boy and came out a man.' Ms. James’s original Fifty Shades, which follows a love affair between naïve Anastasia Steele and businessman Christian Grey, has sold 4.5million copies in the UK.

And the other Parody Tributes

Fifty Shames of Earl Grey: Young, arrogant tycoon Earl Grey seduces Anna Steal with his good looks and staggering amounts of money. But will she be able to get past his fifty shames, including a love of bondage with handcuffs, and shopping at non-luxury supermarkets? Fifty Shades of Gravy: When Vanessa Biscuits attends a cookery class with the renowned Chef Gray, she finds him beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. Gray, unable to resist her slavish devotion to him, admits he wants her, but on his own peculiar terms: covered in gravy. Fifty Shades of Garbage: Marcia and Joe are swept up in the Fifty Shades mania that has seduced the middle-classes. While Marcia devours the novels, Joe scorns them – while secretly listening to the audiobooks on his commute. Fifty Shades of Bacon: Not a sensual novel, but rather a cookbook that attempts to provide a series of delectable bacon-based recipes.

well as your body

Fags leads to sharp decline in mental ability, warns study Tests on nearly 9,000 people all over 50 years old have shown cigarettes could damage the mind as well as the body. Smoking is known to be highly damaging to physical health, being a major factor in cancer and heart disease. Now, however, its alarming effects on the mental wellbeing of millions of smokers have been outlined by British scientists. Lighting up regularly has been associated with a sharp decline in the performance of the brain, according to their study. They found that middle-aged smokers performed less well on tests compared with those without the tobacco habit. The project examined memory, planning and overall mental ability after four and eight years. The tests included asking people to learn new words or name as many animals as they could in a minute. Researchers concluded that smoking ‘consistently’ r e d u ce d all three performance measures after four years. They also found that high blood pressure and being overweight took their toll of brainpower – but not as much as smoking. The team warned that people need to be aware of the impact on their health of lifestyle choices, like smoking. Risk factor data was examined for more than 8,800 people aged 50 and over taking part in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. The researchers at King’s College London were investigating links between

the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke and the state of the brain. High blood pressure and high risk of stroke were also associated with lower scores for memory and overall mental ability after eight years. Being overweight was linked to poor memory, according to the findings published in the journal Age and Ageing. Cognitive decline becomes more common with ageing and, for an increasing number of people, interferes with daily functioning and well-being. The researchers said their results indicate that high blood pressure has a gradual effect on the brain over a long period. This could explain why short-term trials of blood pressure drugs being used to treat mental

decline failed to show a clear benefit. Recent laboratory research suggested a compound in tobacco called NNK provokes white blood cells in the central nervous system to attack healthy cells, leading to severe neurological damage. There are almost 10 million smokers in the UK. The habit is still by far the biggest single cause of preventable illness and premature death. Research has repeatedly linked smoking and high blood pressure to a greater risk of cognitive decline and dementia. This study adds weight to that. Cognitive decline as we age can develop into dementia, and unravelling the factors linked to this decline could be crucial for finding ways to prevent the condition.

Are They Legal?

Aiding and Abetting

Have you ever wondered or questioned for that matter if the builder who is working on your garden wall, the delivery man who collects your IKEA furniture, or the pool cleaner are working legally? All of us have a responsibility to pay our dues, more so than ever with the country in such poor shape. More importantly, there are a plethora of scenarios which could lead the tax man to your doorstep if you use a tradesman or service which is provided by an "illegal". If this happens, it can open a whole world of problems for you. The tax office is not collecting as much in taxes as they need to so they are turning their attentions to fines and penalties. The last thing anyone needs is to be held responsible for the back taxes

or social security payments of someone who did a €50 cash job for us. Of course, Spain is well known for cash transactions, it is where the expression "black money" originated, but times have changed and it should no longer be acceptable. If you can’t stand the heat... Like anything, if you are not prepared to suffer the consequences, don't take a chance - you never know who is watching the person you are paying and if your neighbour is a little green eyed of your new “hanging gardens of Babylon” look, may well feel inclined to drop you in the compost. Besides, saving on a little tax is a false economy. What doesn’t get paid by “them” invariably gets paid by “us” a little further down the line.

DUAL TARIFF electricity There has been a great deal of publicity and rumour regarding dual tariff electricity, and the possible benefits. Exactly what is it and, if a dual tariff system is as great as we are led to believe, shouldn’t we all be on it? Let’s look initially at how the dual rate works. Firstly, you need the new Smart Meter, it records your usage through the day and through the night – peak and offpeak. Currently, the off-peak time is from 10pm through till 12 noon the following day.

Substantial reductions

Anything you consume during off-peak times is charges at 50% discount. Most people who use this system typically see around 20 to 25% savings on their bills which over the year, represents a huge saving. Things we use all day long like fridges and freezers also provide cost savings, although power used in the peak-time is charged a little higher than normal, the massive reduction for the remaining 14

hours more than compensates for any additional charge.

Other benefits

The problem with choosing this tariff is - you don’t actually know how much you can benefit until you try it. Regardless of the tariff you are on, the most important thing that everyone who receives an electricity bill needs to do is fix the rate. We all need to protect ourselves from the price increases that we know are coming. To do this you need to switch to a free market provider. According to El Economista, electricity prices are likely to increase by at least 20% during 2013. It will make a huge difference to our monthly bills unless we do something about it and the most effective course of action is to nail the rate down. There are several things you can do to reduce your bill but, by fixing the rate you do the thing that has the most positive effect. Sounds good but where do you start?

Help is at hand Iberswitch S.L. is the only independent and impartial USC (Utility Switching Company) in Spain and they negotiate electricity rates on behalf of thousands of consumers. By using their service you can switch to the dual tariff and may be able to fix your kilowatt rate and avoid paying price increases (except those which relate to the government taxes).

Bridge the gap They offer customer services in English and act as a bridge between the consumer and the electricity provider. Give them a call on 968 583 511 or visit their website: www.iberswitch.com to see how their service can save you money. The one thing we know for sure, the cost of electricity continues to rise completely out of proportion to the cost of living. Act before the next huge price hike hits.

Digital Breathalyser

Particularly during the party season, this innovative gadget is very useful for indicating your “morning after” alcohol level and could prove to be a wise investment to help ensure the safety of you and those around you. Alcohol absorption is affected by many factors (such as weight, muscle mass and recently consumed food or beverages) meaning it’s impossible to accurately gauge intoxication levels without a measurement tool like a Breathalyser. People are often surprised when they measure their alcohol levels, particularly on different occasions after the same amount of alcohol is consumed.

Of course, we do not condone drinking and driving and if you are thinking of drinking, you should not drive at all. There is no safe alcohol limit. Similar models are currently available in the UK from leading suppliers (such as Amazon)for anything from £49 and upwards.

We are offering this fun and handy alcohol tester which can be used again and again, for just €24.95 plus p&p.

Trichotillomania

Complusive Hair Pulling I am sure a lot of people reading this will have at sometime or other heard the expression "they were so worried/ angry / grieving, they were ready to pull their hair out". Hard as it may be to believe, but there is a condition that causes some people to actually pull out their hair, it is called Trichotillomania (pronounced: trik-oh-till-oh-may-nee-ah). Trichotillomania, compulsive hair pulling, is a type of psychological condition that involves very strong urges to pull out hair. Doctors originally believed the condition was rare, but it is now estimated to be a chronic habit disorder of over 8 million people, and affects more females than males. It is surprising that very few Doctors have actually heard of this condition, but over the years I have treated hundreds of people with this problem. People with Trichotillomania pull their hair out at the root from places such as the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, or pubic area, in fact anywhere where there is hair on

their body. Some people pull large handfuls of hair, which can leave bald patches on the scalp or eyebrows, while others tend to pull one strand at a time. Trichotillomania isn't just an ordinary habit that a person can easily stop it's a type of compulsive behaviour giving an overwhelming urge to pull their hair. People with Trichotillomania may have other compulsive habits, such as nail biting or skin picking, as well as possibly having depression or anxiety. Two recent clients that I treated both had to seek help for this, as it was affecting their everyday lives. One, a teacher, started pulling the hair just behind her ears, as it could not be noticed. Since she had very long hair she was able to disguise it with great effect, but after a while this developed right across her whole scalp until she had no alternative but to wear a wig. Another, young girl of twelve had pulled all her eyelashes out and it was now progressing onto her eyebrows. Her friends had started to notice this and were now teasing her about it.

People with Trichotillomania may feel embarrassment, frustration or shame about their condition. They may worry about what others will think of them and they usually try to hide their behaviour from other people. There are many theories as to why people would do this. In my opinion it is because they are feeding off their endorphins. Whenever a person pulls out their hair, after the initial sting the body then produces chemicals called opioids, or endorphins, to reduce or block the spread of pain messages from the body through the brain. These chemicals produce an effect similar to the action of some pain relief drugs, such as heroin, morphine, anaesthetics, etc. All these are capable of numbing pain but are also able to produce pleasurable sensations when used. Opioids also play a role in feelings of pleasure and reward, and in responses to stressful situations, and may even be involved in the "runner's high" felt during strenuous exercise.

By alan gilchrist

Any relief that comes with hair pulling usually only lasts for a moment or two, and the person feels powerless to control the urge to pull, and starts the cycle once again. It's for this very reason I feel that the hair puller is using it as a type of pleasure sensation, just like a drug addict. Whenever I quiz them about why and when they do it, most say it's usually under times of stress. Some say that they notice a satisfying feeling when they pull their hair out, plus it has now become a habit and the urge always returns, and they feel they simply can't stop it. My method to correct this is quite simple. First, since the mind is now “hooked " on its endorphin rush, I recommend to the client to wear a rubber band on their wrist and each time that they feel the urge to pull a hair out, snap the rubber band against their wrist. This helps in 2 ways; 1. If you think of the mind like a computer and it starts this action, just like a programme, the best way to stop it completing is to put a bug in it. By snapping the

band it brings into play a new action that the mind hasn't done before, which in turns weakens the memory pattern. 2. By snapping the rubber band it also satisfies the mind by introducing the endorphins, but now in a different way, and it is still getting its "fix". By combining this advice with my Fast Track hypnosis to help remove the habit and instil confidence once again into the client the results are very good. It normally takes approx. 4 sessions to achieve this (it takes time for the hair to grow) as well as support and practical advice about how to reverse this powerful habit. Alan holds his Fast Track Hypnosis sessions in Cabo Roig,Guardamar and Benidorm. ‘Sing Just for laughs Harmony in a Day’ Comes to Mazarrón A Thoughtful Valentine's Day Gift

Jim asked his friend, Tony, whether he had bought his wife anything for Valentine's Day. 'Yes,' came the answer from Tony who was a bit of a chauvinist, 'I've bought her a belt and a bag.' 'That was very kind of you,' Jim added, 'I hope she appreciated the thought.' Tony smiled as he replied, 'So do I, and hopefully the vacuum cleaner will work better now.'

Then the man got out a bottle of Channel perfume from his pocket and started spraying scent over the envelopes. By now Mike's curiosity had got the better of him, and so I asked the man why he was sending all those cards. The man replied, "I'm sending out 500 Valentine cards signed, 'Guess who?'" "But why?" asked Mike. "I'm a divorce lawyer," the man replied.

My One And Only

Be My Valentine

Roger, who was 19 years old, was buying an expensive bracelet, to surprise his girlfriend on Valentine's Day, at a very smart jeweller's shop in Hatton Garden, London. The jeweller inquired, 'Would you like your girlfriend's name engraved on it?' Roger thought for a moment, grinned and then answered, 'No, instead engrave "To my one and only love".' The jeweller smiled and said, 'Yes, sir; how very romantic of you.' Roger retorted with a glint in his eye, 'Not exactly romantic, but very practical. This way, if we break up, I can use it again.'

Valentine Dreams

Photos by Jean Weller

On a very windswept day, ten ladies braved the elements and turned up for the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS) ‘Sing Harmony in a Day’ course in Camposol. Some had not sung before and some hadn't sung since they were at school, but all were keen to learn. SABS President and Spangles Musical Director, Gail Grainger, started them off gently with some vocal warmups and breathing exercises. They were then divided them into four sections (Lead, Bass, Baritone and Tenor) to learn a song in four part harmony which would be performed to family and friends in the evening. With the help of quartets ‘Chardonnay’ and ‘Viva’, the ladies soon got to grips with their part. “I’m amazed at how quickly they all learned” commented SABS Vice President, Lyn Baines. There was some trepidation about their ability to sing competently to an audience of friends and family in the evening, but hard work and determination saw them through and they received rapturous applause from their audience. Everyone was keen

to start a new barbershop chorus in Camposol and Gail and Lyn will help them see this through. “We are keen to see more people enjoy barbershop singing in Spain and we are delighted that the ladies wish to progress further after just one day” Lyn remarked. The organisers received some great comments about how the event was well organised and professionally run, how friendly and helpful Viva and Chardonnay were during the learning stage and how much they had enjoyed the experience. One participant commented: “I didn’t know if I could sing – now I think I can!” This is a new initiative for SABS to encourage more people to take up barbershop harmony singing in Spain and they are busily planning the next one on the Costa Blanca later this year. “We’re interested in hearing from men as well as ladies” commented Gail. If you would like to know more about this unique art form, please visit the SABS website: www.sabs. es or contact gail@sabs.es by email.

One morning Emma woke up with a start. Her husband Jim asked what was the matter, she told him, "I just had a dream that you gave me a pearl necklace for Valentine's Day. What do you think it means?" "You'll know tonight," Jim said. That evening, Jim home with a small package and gave it to his wife. Delighted, Emma opened it - only to find a book entitled "The meaning of dreams".

500 Valentine Cards Sent by Desperate Man Mike walked into a post office just before Valentine's day, he couldn't help noticing a middle-aged, balding man standing in a corner sticking "Love" stamps on bright pink envelopes with hearts all over them.

It was Valentine's Day and Jim and Danielle's first date. They sat in the darkened cinema waiting for the film to start. The screen finally lit up with a flashy advertisement for the cinema's concession stand. Jim and Danielle realised that there was no sound. The film began but the silence continued. Suddenly, out of the darkness, an irritated voice in the crowd loudly shouted', Okay, who's got the remote control?'

Love is Blind?

Phil, a smart and handsome young man, dressed in the latest fashion, walked into this local pub. He noticed a woman gazing at him without blinking her big eyes. Phil felt flattered so he walked up to the woman and said in his deepest voice, 'I'll do anything you wish, beautiful lady, for just £10 but on one condition.' The woman appeared to be trapped in the moment and asked as if in a trance, 'What's your condition?' Phil answered, 'Tell me your wish in just three words.' There was a long pause, the woman opened her purse, counted out the money and handed it to the man along with her address. She then looked deeply into his eyes and whispered, 'Clean my house.'

How Long Have You Been Married?

When a woman on the staff of the school where I worked became engaged, a friend and colleague offered her some advice. 'The first ten years are the hardest.' 'How long have you been married?' she asked. 'Ten years', he replied.

A Valentine Kiss for Prince Charming? Nigel, an alcoholic, staggered into a bar on Valentine's Day and, after staring for some time at the only woman seated there, walked up to her and gave her kiss in honour of Valentine's Day. She jumped up and slapped him really hard. Nigel immediately apologised and explained, 'Look, I'm sorry. I thought you were my wife. You look exactly like her.' 'Why you worthless, insufferable, wretched, no good drunk!' she screamed at the top of her voice. 'Funny,' Nigel muttered, shaking his head, 'you even sound exactly like her.' A couple is lying in bed. The man says, 'I am going to make you the happiest woman in the world...' The woman replies, 'I'll miss you....... 'It's just too hot to wear clothes today,' Bill says as he stepped out of the shower. 'Honey, what do you think the neighbours would think if I mowed the lawn like this?' 'Probably that I married you for your money.'

history of valentine's day From its pre-Christian origins, involving nudity and whipping, to its present incarnation as a commercial free-for-all driving huge sales of chocolate, flowers and jewellery

St Valentine's Day has entered the popular consciousness to the extent that one William Shakespeare mentions it in Ophelia's lament in Hamlet.

The passing of love-notes becomes popular in England, a precursor to the St Valentine's Day card as we know it today. Early ones are made of lace and paper. In 1797, The Young Man’s Valentine Writer is published, suggesting appropriate rhymes and messages, and as postal services became more affordable, the anonymous St Valentine's Day card became possible. By the early 19th century, they become so popular that factories start to mass-produce them.

Following the English tradition, Esther Howland of Worcester, Massachusetts, starts producing cards – using the newly available and much cheaper paper lace – in the United States. The St Valentine's Day Massacre: A savage and bloody event in itself – five Chicago gangsters lined up and murdered with machine guns, apparently at the behest of Al Capone – but at least it's a break from the unending stream of saccharine that the history of St Valentine's Day otherwise entails, and so is welcome here.

If you felt cynical, you might call this date the beginning of the end for St Valentine's Day as a genuinely romantic event, and the start of its reinvention of a savagely imposed regime of sugar-coated ideas designed to chisel spare cash out of lovers and would-be lovers worldwide: Hallmark Cards produce their first Valentine. Now the date is the flagship “Hallmark Holiday” - together with Mothers' Day, Fathers' Day and so on, a series of celebrations notable more for the need to spend money than any heartfelt sentiment.

The commercialisation continues: noting the sales effect of the holiday on chocolate, flowers and cards, the diamond industry gets involved, promoting St Valentine's Day as a time for giving jewellery. The “tradition” takes off.

An estimated 1 billion St Valentine's Day cards will be sent worldwide this year, making it the second most card-heavy celebration after Christmas.

Valentine's Day generates an estimated $14.7 billion (£9.2 billion) in retail sales in the United States.

I know a lot of men who read this will be smiling, proud in the fact they themselves are not caught up with all the fuss of purchasing of cards, and certainly not flowers. Well done to you I say - although your wives may be thinking something quite different.

happy birthday germain As Germain Greer celebrates her 74th Birthday her fight for women’s liberation is most noticeable in schools Attacks on UK primary teachers are currently running at forty a day. To be clear, these are assaults by children aged between five and eleven years old. Lack of discipline is being blamed that is, discipline administered by the parent rather than the teachers. Most parents would tell you that they only see their children for a couple of hours in the evening, and with the bulk of the day being spent with their friends and under the control of the education system, kids are being influenced less by their parents.

Hats off

One of the sectors that Ms. Greer targeted was schools. She

commented at the time that there were very few female teachers compared to males. Well, well done Ms. Greer. Men are now the minority in schools these days and many believe this is to the detriment of discipline. What makes it worse is that teachers are apparently not reporting many incidents which many believe is due to either fearing repercussions or, that the odds are stacked in favour of the pupil and any report will not be taken seriously.

Bring back men

It seems that there is no middleground, nothing between children behaving correctly or being expelled for violence to teachers. Many people would like to see an increase in male teachers but without the ability to chastise

or punish and with pupils being confrontational because they “know their rights”, teaching is becoming a profession where standards will naturally decline. Most people can remember a teacher that commanded the best behaviour, one that doled out the punishment if we stepped out of line. In most cases, they were respected rather than feared and even if they were, there was nothing wrong with knowing where you crossed the line. If the cap fits Issues such as these raise the questions; where will it end? Are we going to see the introduction of teachers sitting at their desks behind Perspex screens? There is nothing wrong with equality, but there are some jobs better suited to both sexes that take advantage of the attributes of either.

Ecosense = Good Sense Don’t throw good money down the toilet Renting Spanish property has become a less viable option for many people. When comparing the income gained compared to the running costs and in particular, those of electricity, there is often a fine line dividing profit from loss. Even when this is not the case, avoiding wastage means higher profit margins. The first thing that people do when they arrive at the apartment or house they have rented in Spain, is turn on the air conditioner and whizz the control down to 16 degrees, full fan speed, often leaving the cold air blowing as they depart the property for a day at the beach. Accepted by many as a by-product of rental business, you can easily and cheaply eradicate this which over time will put a completely different complexion on your rental income. There are two Ecosense products that will help you to reduce your electricity consumption whilst you are renting your property. One product turns off the air conditioner unit if it doesn’t detect movement after a set period. The other dictates the minimum and maximum temperature levels, as set by you. Ecosense products may be purchased separately or together, if using both you maximise on your potential savings. Visit the Ecosense website for more information: www.ecosense.co.uk. Alternately call our Spanish distributor Iberswitch SL: on 902 027 517 and if you quote reference: TWES you can claim a 20% discount.

EcoRemote Replaces the existing remote control of your A/C unit and allows you to pre-set the minimum and maximum temperatures thus stipulating how hard you are prepared for your equipment to work. By simply reducing the units capability by a couple of degrees at the end of the scale where it works it’s hardest will have a substantial impact on your consumption. The EcoRemote retails at €25

Ecosense 2000 Ecosense uses Passive Infra Red (PIR) technology to scan the room for occupancy. PIR will only detect body heat and will not therefore be affected by items such as ceiling fans, curtains etc. When no movement is detected it will send a signal to the air conditioning (A/C) unit to switch it off. Ecosense also has a comfort night sensor, enabling the A/C to be used, if required, throughout hours of darkness. Reduces energy costs by up to 80% Battery operated Easy installation Built in comfort night sensor Tamper proof lockable function buttons Compatible with most A/C units The Ecosense 2000 retails at €74

am i depressed?

Signs and Symptoms of Depression

are intense and unrelenting, with little, if any, relief.

Signs and symptoms Depression varies from person to person, but there are some common signs and symptoms. It’s important to remember that these symptoms can be part of life’s normal lows. But the more symptoms you have, the stronger they are, and the longer they’ve lasted—the more likely it is that you’re dealing with depression. When these symptoms are overwhelming and disabling, that's when it's time to seek help.

Common signs Feeling down from time to time is a normal part of life. But when emptiness and despair take hold and won't go away, it may be depression. The lows of depression make it tough to function and enjoy life like you once did. Just getting through the day can be overwhelming. No matter how hopeless you feel, you can get better. But first, you need to understand depression. Learning about depression— including its signs, symptoms, causes, and treatment—is the

first step to overcoming the problem.

What is depression? We all go through ups and downs in our mood. Sadness is a normal reaction to life’s struggles, setbacks, and disappointments. Many people use the word “depression” to explain these kinds of feelings, but depression is much more than just sadness. Some people describe depression as “living in a black

hole” or having a feeling of impending doom. However, some depressed people don't feel sad at all—they may feel lifeless, empty, and apathetic, or men in particular may even feel angry, aggressive, and restless. Whatever the symptoms, depression is different from normal sadness in that it engulfs your day-to-day life, interfering with your ability to work, study, eat, sleep, and have fun. The feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, and worthlessness

• Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. A bleak outlook— nothing will ever get better and there’s nothing you can do to improve your situation. • Loss of interest in daily activities. No interest in former hobbies, pastimes, social activities, or sex. You’ve lost your ability to feel joy and pleasure. • Appetite or weight changes. Significant weight loss or weight gain—a change of more than 5% of body weight in a month. • Sleep changes. Either insomnia, especially waking in

the early hours of the morning, or oversleeping (also known as hypersomnia). • Anger or irritability. Feeling agitated, restless, or even violent. Your tolerance level is low, your temper short, and everything and everyone gets on your nerves. • Loss of energy. Feeling fatigued, sluggish, and physically drained. Your whole body may feel heavy, and even small tasks are exhausting or take longer to complete. • Self-loathing. Strong feelings of worthlessness or guilt. You harshly criticize yourself for perceived faults and mistakes. • Reckless behavior. You engage in escapist behavior such as substance abuse, compulsive gambling, reckless driving, or dangerous sports. • Concentration problems. Trouble focusing, making decisions, or remembering things. • Unexplained aches and pains. An increase in physical complaints such as headaches, back pain, aching muscles, and stomach pain. If you think a friend or family member is considering suicide, express your concern and seek professional help immediately. Talking openly about depression is the key to overcoming it.

Chinese study shows tomatoes could ward of depression Eating tomatoes just a few times a week could halve the chances of suffering depression, a study claims. Researchers analysed the mental health records and diet habits of just under 1,000 men and women aged 70 or over. The results found those eating tomatoes two to six times a week were 46 percent less likely to suffer the blues than those eating them less than once a week. The study showed that other fruits and vegetables do not have the same benefits. Eating healthy foods

like cabbage, carrots, onions and pumpkins appeared to have little or no effect on psychological well-being although they are good for you.

Up to 20 per cent of people suffer depression at some point in their lives, with women affected more than men. The elderly are at high risk because of the effect on mood from declining health, bereavements and loneliness. One of the most worrying factors is, you do not always

theWord Medical University, wanted to investigate preliminary reports that lycopene might also promote psychological as well as physical health by reducing oxidative stress, or damage to healthy brain cells. They analysed the dietary habits of just under 1,000 elderly men and women aged 70 or over and the results, published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, found that those who ate tomatoes two to six times a week were 46 per cent less likely to suffer depression than those eating them less than once a week.

Not all fruits and veggies are the same

know that you are suffering with depression and the symptoms are often put down to other ailments. Tomatoes are rich in antioxidant chemicals that are thought to protect against some diseases. They are a particularly good source of lycopene, an antioxidant which gives them their deep red colour and has been linked with reducing the risk of prostate cancer and heart attacks. British consumers get through half-a-million tonnes of tomatoes every year - the equivalent of 8 kilos per person a year. However, this is still much less than in some Mediterranean countries such as here in Spain.

Frequent eating is key

A team of researchers from China and Japan, led by Dr Kaijun Niu from China’s Tianjin

The researchers said they cannot be sure if lycopene in tomatoes directly affects the mind, or whether it simply protects against the depression caused when people develop potentially fatal diseases like cancer. In a report on the findings they said: ‘These results suggest that a tomato-rich diet may have a beneficial effect on the prevention of depressive symptoms. ‘In contrast, no relationship was observed with intake of other kinds of vegetables.’

Pe r s o n a l l y ? Eating tomatoes make me feel really good when they are presented nicely and when I am in the company of my loved ones. I can really feel my spirits lift if I have a great view and there is nice music playing. I cannot honestly say I feel the benefits of a nice ripe tomato if it is raining, there is nothing else in the fridge and I have just weighed myself. That said, I eat tomatoes at least four times a week and cannot say I feel depressed in any way, so maybe there is some truth in it.

Don’t Drink The Water

The conversation about drinking tap water in Spain comes up regularly, usually after a trip to the supermarket and the ritual walk from the car to the house lugging the huge bottles of water. Is it really necessary to do this, can we not just draw the water from the tap? Sometimes, the morning cup of tea, to me at any rate, is reminiscent of the local baths I used to go to as a teenager and where my eyes would go completely bloodshot from the chlorine in the water. If it was simply a case of getting used to the taste, I would indeed be drinking the water directly from the tap but as it is, I even use bottled water to fill the kettle otherwise my nice cup of Tetleys would be completely spoilt. Am I being precious? Should I persevere and push past the taste barrier? Well, if the state of my old kettle or my taps is anything to go by I would say no, I am not. Hard water is one of the biggest issues in Spain and as a subsequence, having to carry the heavy water bottles is one of the others. A solution would be to have the water delivered directly to your door.

Dealing with Hard Water

There are a number of ways of dealing with limescale deposits caused by hard water, something experienced by most home owners. This article explores the options, and describes fitting an electronic descaling device. This is a simple job to tackle which will alleviate the problems of limescale build up in most homes for substantially less cost than a conventional chemical water softener and is likely to pay for itself many times over.

The problem

Do these problems affect you? Furred-up kettle? High electricity bills? Clogged shower head? Hot taps running slowly due to clogged pipes? Stubborn tidemarks around baths and sinks? White stains on taps, even though you’ve just cleaned them? If you suffer these, then join the majority of the population. You’ve got a hard water problem.

The solutions

There are three possible solutions: 1: Chemical limescale cleaners and lots of hard scrubbing to remove baked on limescale, added to which you will have to keep on top of the problem week after week. You would be surprised how the cost mounts up too! Also the cleaners pollute the waste water, causing yet more problems to the environment. 2: Conventional (ion exchange) water softener - the most expensive option. These devices must be plumbed into

your mains water supply, and consume a large quantity of salt in order to make them function, about €15 per month for a family of four people. The water generated by these systems is truly softened, but sodium from the salt replaces the calcium in your water. This means that treated water has substantially raised sodium levels. Experts advise that this water is not suitable for drinking, so an alternative source of drinking water should ideally be arranged (separate tap in kitchen). This is particularly important if you have children in the house, as they should consume even less sodium than an adult, and on no account should a baby’s formula milk be made with water treated by an ion exchange water softener. Conventional salt based water softeners also generate substantial amounts of waste water with regular flushing of the resin tanks, increasing the water bill for those households with metered water. 3. Electronic or magnetic water descalers. Some devices are simply powerful magnets placed around the incoming mains water pipe. A much more effective device is the electronic water descaler, an example of which is the Eddy Water Descaler developed by the Surrey based manufacturers Eddy. They produce an up rated model, the ED6002P which more than doubles the output level of previous models to combat

even the most severe limescale problems. This device operates by wrapping coils of wire around the incoming water main to pass a magnetic field through the water. The effect of this is to cause the calcium in the water to stay in solution and so inhibit it from adhering to taps, baths and kettles. When developing this device, Eddy Water Descalers sought to better the output level of all rival devices by a significant factor whilst also managing to produce a unit that is economical to buy and run. During the testing phase they found some competing devices to have

output signals so low as to render them almost completely ineffective. Also unlike some inferior devices which operate with only one coil, Eddy Water Descalers have two, so increasing the time for which the water is exposed to the magnetic waveform. This has been a crucial factor in its success. It’s made in Britain too, and comes with a 12 month money back guarantee if not completely satisfied with the performance. Eddy is also kind to the environment as, unlike with a salt based softener; there are no environmentally damaging discharges into your waste water. An Eddy Water Descaler represents an economical and environmentally friendly way of combating the nuisance of limescale. The treated water has an unaltered chemical composition, so is as safe to drink as normal tap water. No dangerous chemicals or cleaners are washed into your waste water. The build up of limescale is radically reduced, not only on visible surfaces like taps and kettles, but also in places where limescale damage cannot be seen, such as heating elements in washing machines, and hot water tanks. In these places, excess limescale results in increased water heating costs and premature heating element failure. After fitting an Eddy water descaler, any small

deposits of limescale that are still present, in kettles for example, should be powdery and easily cleaned away with a quick rinse or a gentle wipe. Furthermore, of great interest to our readers, the device is easily installed as a DIY operation, taking the average householder no more than 30 minutes to fit. Overall, electronic water descalers such as Eddy present a neat solution to a major problem for those of us in Spain (most of us) afflicted by hard water.

However, if DIY is not your strong point, we can even arrange installation of the unit for a small charge. We recommend a visit to the Eddy website to read how installing a descaler system with 100% money back guarantee can save you money and protect your home from limescale. Go to: www.eddy.uk.com The Retail Price is €179.99 but if you order your Eddy Descaler before 28th February you can claim a 10% discount if you mention Promotion Code TW5004. Call: 902 027 517

giving up fatty food makes dieters depressed Anti-depression treatment without prescription Watching other people tuck into calorie-laden food while dieters munch on 'rabbit food' is enough to make anyone feel blue. However, scientists say ditching a high-fat diet triggers actual chemical changes in the brain that could make people enter a vicious cycle of poor eating. Fatty and sugary foods cause chemical changes before obesity even occurs and researchers liken going on a diet, to drug withdrawal. By working with mice, whose brains are in many

ways comparable to our own, researchers discovered that the neurochemistry of the animals that had been fed a high fat, sugary diet were different from those who had been fed a healthy diet. The chemicals changed by the diet are associated with depression. A change of diet then causes withdrawal symptoms and a greater sensitivity to stressful situations, launching a vicious cycle of poor eating. The researchers fed one group of mice a low-fat diet and a high-fat diet to a second group

over six weeks, monitoring how the different food affected the way the animals behaved. Fat represented 11 per cent of the calories in the low-fat diet and 58 per cent in the high-fat diet, causing the waist size in the second group to increase by 11 per cent, which is not yet obese. The relationship between rewarding mice with food and their resulting behaviour and emotions was then measured, and the brains of the mice were studied to see if there had been any changes. Results showed mice that

had been fed the higher-fat diet exhibited signs of being anxious - such as avoiding open areas - and their brains had been altered.

This is surely “food for thought about how we might support people psychologically as they strive to adopt healthy eating habits.

Health benefits of fasting

Many observe fasting as a religious obligation but there are infact health benefits. approach fasting with caution.

Inflammatory Response

Some studies show that fasting promotes resolution of inflammatory diseases and allergies. Examples of such inflammatory diseases are rheumatoid arthritis and skin diseases such as psoriasis. Some experts assert that fasting may promote healing of inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis. Fasting is a good practice, if properly implemented. It promotes elimination of toxins from the body, reduces blood sugar and fat stores. It promotes healthy eating habits and boost immunity.

Here are top 10 health benefits you can derive from fasting:

Promotes detoxification

Processed foods contain lots of additives. These additives may become toxins in the body and most of these toxins are stored in fats. Fat is burnt during fasting, especially when it is prolonged. When fat is burnt,

the toxins are released. The liver, kidneys and other organs in the body are therefore involved in detoxification.

Rests Digestive System

During fasting, the digestive organs rest. The normal physiologic functions continue especially production of digestive secretions, but at reduced rates. This exercise helps to maintain balance of fluids in the body. Breakdown of food takes place at steady rates. Release of energy also follows a gradual pattern. Fasting however does not stop production of acids in the stomach. This is reason patients with peptic ulcer are advised to

methods of reducing blood pressure. It helps to reduce the risk of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is clogging of arteries by fat particles. During fasting glucose and later, fat stores are used to produce energy. The fear-flight hormones such as adrenaline and noradrenalin are also reduced. This keeps the metabolic steady and within limits. The benefit is a reduction in blood pressure.

Reduces Blood Sugar

Promotes Weight loss

Increases Fat breakdown

Promotes Healthy diet

Fasting increases breakdown of glucose so that the body can get energy. It reduces production of insulin. This rests the pancreas. Glucagon is produced to facilitate the breakdown of glucose. The outcome of fasting is a reduction in blood sugar. The first response of the body to fasting is break down of glucose. When the store of glucose is exhausted, ketosis begins. This is break down of fats to release energy. The fats stored in kidney and muscles are broken down to release energy.

Corrects high blood Pressure

Fasting is one of the non-drug

Fasting promotes rapid weight loss. It reduces the store of fats in the body. However fasting is not a good weight loss strategy. Reducing fat and sugar intake, and increasing fruits and rest are better measures to achieve weight reduction. It has been observed that fasting reduces craving for processed foods. It promotes desire for natural foods, especially water and fruits. This is one way fasting promote healthy lifestyle.

Boosts Immunity

When an individual is on balanced diet in between fasts, this can boost immunity.

Elimination of toxins and reduction in fat store also helps the body. When individuals take fruits to break a fast, they increase the body's store of essential vitamins and minerals. Vitamins A and E are good antioxidants readily available in fruits. They help to boost immunity.

May Help to Overcome Addictions Some studies show that fasting can help addicts reduce their cravings, for nicotine, alcohol, caffeine and other substance abuse. Although there are other regimens required to resolve addictions, fasting can play a role. Despite these benefits, fasting has some demerits. It may cause reduction in body water called dehydration. This leads may lead to headaches and even trigger migraines in predisposed persons. It may worsen heartburn and peptic ulcer. Pregnant women, nursing mothers, malnourished people, and individuals with cardiac arrhythmias, renal or liver problems are advised not to fast.

Top 10 tips for holiday rental success

Brought to you by the UK´s No. 1 Holiday rental site, HomeAway.co.uk

1

Cover yourself

Firstly ensure you are allowed to let your property on a short-term basis and that you understand applicable taxation laws, as you must declare income earned from holiday lets. You also need holiday rental liability insurance and ideally a booking contract to confirm details of the reservation, deposit/ refund/cancellation policies and terms and conditions of tenancy.

2

Provide a prompt, professional service

4 5

Set up auto-replies for booking enquiries containing further details of your property and travel options, and have a standard email prepared to send with your booking contract. If your calendar looks out of date, or your rates aren’t clear, you will miss out on enquiries.

Have a local representative

3

Ideally you should have someone to ‘meet and greet’ your clients. You will also need a cleaner and someone on hand locally to deal with problems. One person can often fulfil all these roles – ask fellow holiday home owners or your property agent for recommendations.

Know your market

Understand your target audience and research the price of comparable properties and alternative accommodation in the area. What type of tourists visit the area and what will they be looking for? Know your seasons and run offers to attract off-peak holidaymakers.

Set the holiday scene

Great photos and descriptions really help set the holiday scene and sell a stay in your property. Take time writing so carefully prepare every shot. Renters will want to see exterior shots, outside facilities and view, plus photos of every room.

6

Furnish for rentals

7

Go the extra mile

8

Provide comments from past guests

9

Advertise

10

Keep furnishings simple and avoid clutter; invest in a lockable cupboard to store away personal knick-knacks. Ensure the property meets health and safety requirements, and consider what practical items guests will expect.

Little extras can make all the difference – include a welcome pack of basics and local goodies, and provide a file with useful information on local attractions, activities and transport.

Positive testimonials from previous guests will help sell your property. Leave a guestbook at your property for feedback and to gather positive quotes.

Having your own website to refer guests to is great, but there are millions of websites online so you need to advertise somewhere you will definitely be seen. Magazines are one option, but reputable holiday rental websites are a cost-effective way to get exposure to millions of holidaymakers and manage booking enquiries. To reduce the impact of seasonality, advertise with a holiday rental website that provides international visibility like HomeAway.co.uk.

Are holiday rentals for me? Holiday home owners market their holiday home for a number of reasons: Offset mortgage and running costs for the property Earn short term rental income from a property waiting to be sold Earn short term rental income when the property is not being used.

If you are interested in learning more about holiday rentals, see our advert on Page 37

It is important to remember that when renting your property to holidaymakers, you retain full control of when the property is rented, the rental income charged, for how long and most importantly who to.

Considered by most doctors to be the worst kind of fat, margarine is full of trans fats which are linked to many health related problems and are well documented as the cause of blocked arteries. Scientists aren't sure exactly why, but the addition of hydrogen to oil increases your cholesterol more than do other types of fats. It's thought that adding hydrogen to oil makes the oil more difficult to digest, and your body recognizes trans fats as saturated fats. Trans fat is made by adding hydrogen to vegetable oil through a process called hydrogenation, which makes the oil less likely to spoil. Using trans fats in the manufacturing of foods helps foods stay fresh longer, have a longer shelf life and have a less greasy feel.

Cutting the salt and cutting the fat doesn't have to mean its bland Treat your heart this Valentine´s Day! The Restaurant,

Hotel La Encarnación, Los Alcázares, Murcia

Guilt free "fried" chicken

For this healthier version of fried chicken, skinless chicken pieces are dipped in a spicy bread-crumb coating and baked until crispy and golden brown. We guarantee that you won’t miss the calories. 4 main dish servings Total Time: 50 min Prep Time: 15 min Cook Time: 35 min Oven Temp: 425 Ingredients Olive oil nonstick cooking spray 120 mls plain dried bread crumbs 4 tablespoons freshly grated parmesan cheese 2 tablespoons cornmeal 1/2 teaspoon cayenne 1 large egg white 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 (3 1/2 pounds) chicken, cut into 8 pieces, skin removed from all but wings

Directions Preheat oven to 425 degrees F., 220 C. or Gas mark 7. Grease a baking tray with cooking spray. On waxed paper, combine bread crumbs, Parmesan, cornmeal, and ground red pepper. In pie plate, beat egg white and salt. Dip each piece of chicken in egg-white mixture, then coat with crumb mixture, pressing firmly so mixture adheres. Arrange chicken in prepared pan; lightly coat chicken with cooking spray. Bake chicken until coating is crisp and golden brown and juices run clear when thickest part of chicken is pierced with tip of knife, about 35 minutes.

Chips, sweet potato style Located right on the promenade, Hotel La Encarnación is a charming historical building with a traditional interior courtyard. It offers a two for one breakfast which you can take on the patio over looking the Mar Menor. Choose from churros (similar to doughnuts) with chocolate to dip into or toast and marmalade/jam or tomato, OJ and coffee. Maybe tapas is your thing. You wont be disappointed as there is a dazzling array of yummy morsels to choose from that you can eat in the court yard along with a delightful bottle of wine from their extensive wine list. The hotel's daily menu consisting of an aperitif, starter, choice of two main courses and dessert. You could also try one of the two taster menus consisting of aperitif, starter, a first course, a main course, sorbet and dessert, drinks are included. There are two prices for the taster menu; 27 and 33 euros. In the evening an A La Carte menu is available. Expect to spend around 35 to 40 euros per person for an evening meal. The last time I was at La Encarncación I had a starter of ravioli with a filling of Pâté de Foie Gras. The plate was beautifully presented and the ravioli was totally delicious. I ordered a steak for my main course. What arrived was a perfectly cooked (I had asked for rare) extremely tender piece of meat, full of flavour and accompanied with vegetables . Not a chip in sight! After the main I can say I was full but a quick look over the dessert menu convinced me I could squeeze a bit more in. I eventually made the decision to have the Mojito Granita which was refreshing and not too sweet. I don't know about you but often I find Spanish desserts can be too sweet for my taste. I followed this all up with a large Asiatico (coffee) a brilliant end to the meal. I will definitely be going back.

A word on portion size...

Handy Dandy Portion Guide There's a portion guide that is always with you, easy to use, and isn't embarrassing to pull out at restaurants. It's your hand! Simply looking at your hand can help you determine the right amount to eat. For example: Your palm = about 3 oz of cooked meat or fish Your fist = about 8 oz of cooked rice or pasta, cut vegetables or fruit Your thumb = about 1 oz of cheese The tip of your thumb = about 1 teaspoon of oil or butter Three fingers = about 1 oz of chocolate A handful = about 1 ounce of nuts As a point of reference, most people should aim to get 5-6 ounces of meat or fish, 15 oz of fruit and vegetables, 6-8 oz of grains, 3 servings of dairy and 6-8 teaspoons of oil each day. The following are examples of individual dairy servings: 200ml milk (whether it is whole or full-fat, semi-skimmed or skimmed) 250ml calcium-fortified soya milk 30g hard cheese (a piece the size of a small matchbox, e.g. cheddar or mozzarella 1 small pot of low-fat plain or fruit yoghurt (150g) Fruit smoothie made with 200ml milk or 150g yoghurt

Cut open your burger buns. Spread dressing over the bottom half of each bun. Add lettuce, top with mashed avocado, salmon burger patties and sliced cucumber.

No crust baked cheesecake

Regular cheesecake is tempting. Add a delicious topping of blueberry goo, and it's irresistible! Berry nice!

To make the cheesecake, first set out all measured ingredients. Combine cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract in a large bowl. With an electric mixer set to medium speed, beat until smooth, 1 - 2 minutes. While continuing to beat the mixture, gradually add yogurt, egg whites, lemon juice, flour, and cinnamon. Beat until thoroughly mixed, about 2 minutes. Evenly pour cheesecake mixture into the pan. Bake in the oven until firm, 40 - 45 minutes. Set cheesecake aside and allow to cool completely in the pan. Meanwhile, to make the topping, bring a mediumsized pot to medium-high heat on the stove. Add all topping ingredients. Add 1/2 cup cold water and mix well. Bring mixture to a boil, and then reduce heat to low. Stirring occasionally, simmer until mixture is thick and gooey, 2 - 3 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool completely. Once cheesecake and topping have completely cooled, evenly pour blueberry topping over the cheesecake in the pan. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour, until fully chilled. Once ready to serve, release and remove the springform. Cut into 8 slices and dig in!

Eva’s gardening corner

A Ruthless Killer

The Red Palm Weevil Rusty red in colour with size averaging between two and three centimetres in length, the Red Palm Weevil is a silent predator of our much loved, not to mention

expensive palm trees and, of all the trees it could choose, when it opts for the palm, its incubation period is the shortest. You only need take a walk along your nearest beachfront to see the carnage they leave behind

once they have selected a host tree for their eggs. They lay between 300 and 500 and the adult pushes her clutch deep into the tough palm tissue. The reason so many trees in public places are killed by this creature is, prevention requires the regular spraying of insecticides which is not always possible for reasons of health or practicality. One of the first signs of attack is that of yellowing and wilting of the palm leaves. Because it attacks the base of the leaf, once it has been feasted upon, the leaf simply flops down and can be plucked out of the tree with little or no effort. Once removed, you will notice there are bore holes through the base and there is a pungent stench which is unmistakeable and once smelt, it is never forgotten.

Once they attack and the evidence is visible, there is little more to do other than to remove the palm completely and have it taken for disposal. This is not only necessary to prevent infestation of other palms but is also your obligation. Local councils usually have a team of people who will come and remove the tree without charge and up until last year, as encouragement to comply quickly with this obligation, they actually paid compensation based on the height of the trunk. Sadly, this no longer happens. Over Christmas, I had to remove one of my own trees and it was a sad affair. That said, when I dug into the trunk and saw the revolting larva and the adults crawling

around inside, my desire to stop further devastation outweighed my sadness of the loss of life to my beautiful palm which offered perfect shade in the summer and featured in many of the photographs I took in my garden over the last decade.
