Led by a specialist Gallery Guide, the tour considers the complex relationships between utilitarian objects, purely aesthetic artefacts and articles designed for Indigenous ritual. The tour is self-guided, 5km long, largely avoids main roads and takes about two hours to ride at a leisurely pace with refreshments to cool down at the end. Slap on sunscreen and your helmet ready for an outdoor art adventure. Suitable for most cyclists with moderate fitness. Lecture 6:45pm) Booking: F1311 Yasha’s knowledge of the history of the Jews in London’s East End is encyclopaedic. Despite struggle and strife, the colourful and symbolic traditions of the chosen people have survived amongst a diverse immigrant community. Born in Turkey, Yasha qualified as a lawyer in Jerusalem and settled in England in 1968. Yasha has lived, travelled and lectured extensively and is the author of eleven books on collecting. His personal knowledge of the city will add a new level of understanding that we rarely experience. Depicting the iconic New York that captivates the world’s imagination, this exhibition celebrates the city in all its vitality, ambition and beauty. Comprising 90 photographers, including Henri Cartier-Bresson and Cindy Sherman. Picturing New York: Photographs from The Museum of Modern Art is organised by The Museum of Modern Art, New York and The Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth.

Lecture 6:45pm) Booking: F1312 Beautiful and mysterious, feared and revered in equal measure, tigers have inspired countless legends, beliefs and works of art. This lecture explores the tiger’s significance as a symbol of power and protection, illustrated by diverse art and artefacts. Initially based at the Victoria & Albert Museum, Zara is an art historian, curator and lecturer specialising in the art and culture of Tibet, the Himalayas and Mongolia.

His witty, unique views of Australia, combined with his outstanding talent have earned him the reputation of being one of Australia’s most prominent artists. Leon will provide a printing demonstration and floor talk in his studio, sharing his art, personal journey and creative process at this Friends exclusive visit.

Wednesday 5 June, 6-8.30pm AGWA Theatrette, enter via James Street Mall Members $40/Guests $50 (inc. refreshments, lecture and film) Booking: F1319 The Director will talk about the forthcoming MoMA series exhibition Van Gogh, Dalí and Beyond: The World Reimagined and introduce us to the life and art of van Gogh before showing Dominick Rimbault’s documentary In The Footsteps of Vincent van Gogh. Charting the final two years of the artist’s life in Arles, the film’s narrative is based on the letters of van Gogh to his brother Theo. Swinging from depression to artistic delirium, van Gogh created over 2000 works until his death in 1890. Van Gogh, Dalí and Beyond: The World Reimagined is organised by The Museum of Modern Art, New York and The Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth.

From Impressionism, Cubism and Surrealism to the art of today, this is a rare occasion in Australia to view iconic works by some of the most important artists of the 20th century – van Gogh, Picasso, Cezanne, Wesselmann, Kahlo, Richter – with works that reinvent the way we look at landscape, still life and portraiture. Be enthralled by the amazing initiative of the studio cluster at the renovated Midland Railway Workhops, now in its 5th year. ‘Paper, Cotton, Leather, Flowers, Wood’ is a site-specific exhibition showcasing the breadth of its creative programming across design, jewellery, textiles, photography, street art and sculpture. Friends will enjoy an exclusive floor talk, an artist talk, and a self-guided tour through the five exhibition locations, finishing with an opportunity to talk to the artists and catch up with Friends over afternoon tea. We recommend taking the train, as the workshops are a short walk from Midland station.

ADFAS Trompe l’Oeil: the art of illusion with visiting lecturer Mr Tom Errington

Lecture 6:45pm) Booking: F1315 Visiting ADFAS lecturer Tom Errington has been a practicing trompe l’oeil painter, gilder and mural artist for 25 years. His lecture will consider the historical and contemporary examples of trompe l’oeil painting, including works by Corregio, Crivelli and Tiepolo. Tom has also worked in theatre and is currently the art and stained glass adviser to the Dioceses of Southwell and Nottingham, and Coventry.

Lecture 6:45pm) Booking: F1322 Cyrus. Darius. Xerxes. Westerners mostly know the Persian rulers of the largest ancient empire, through the writings of their great rivals, the Greeks and Macedonians. Aeschylus, Xenophon, Herodotus discussed, condemned and became seduced by the wealth and glory of Achaemenid. This lecture will reveal another side to the Persian story and reveal why an Iranian King remains revered by the Children of Israel.

Learn about the stunning artistic Timurid legacy still found in modern Uzbekistan, through a lens of imperial patronage: architecture, books, astronomy, paintings, poetry – all illuminating a glorious world of medieval commerce, competition, warfare and empire.

ADFAS From Orangery to Conservatory – the garden under glass with visiting lecturer Mr Steven Desmond

Lecture 6:45pm) Booking: F1316 During the 18th and early 19th centuries the conservatory evolved from an isolated functional building to an elegant structure, becoming an adjunct to the house and acquiring its own forms of architecture and interior design. This lecture will review these design principles and look at a wide range of examples from Britain and continental Europe. Steven Desmond is an established writer and broadcaster and a landscape consultant specialising in the conservation and management of historic parks and gardens in Britain and Europe. Lecturing widely, he leads specialist tours of houses and gardens in Britain, Ireland, France, Germany and Italy.

Sunday 25 August, 2-4.30pm Meet at the AGWA Manhattan Lounge Members $10/Guests $10 (inc. simple afternoon tea) Booking: F1324 Part Two of the Friends trilogy of Indigenous Art tours looks at traditional and contemporary works from Arnhem Land, the Central Desert and Western Australia in our State Collection. The Gallery develops the art collection for Western Australians by acquiring, preserving, displaying and interpreting the visual arts from the past and present. With 17,000 works of art in the Collection, the Indigenous art is a highlight. With such a broad selection, the works rotate throughout the year. Bring your friends (at Members prices).

ADFAS Hedonistic Paris: Art, Life and Culture of Paris during the Jazz Age 1920-1930 with Linda Collins

Lecture 6:45pm) Booking: F1317 Paris between the wars was a mecca for artists. Paul Poiret was designing dresses, Picasso, Leger and Dalí dominated the art scene and the music clubs were taken over by the import from Harlem – the New Jazz. Josephine Baker danced in her banana skirt and Duke Ellington and Mistinguett sang songs such as ‘je cherche un millionaire’. Linda Collins worked at Hampton Court Palace for 22 years and is an independent lecturer for NADFAS, Tate Modern and The National Gallery.

In 2007, Brendon’s multi media presentation Listening to Paintings – Australia premiered at New York’s Museum of Natural History as part of the Australia Week celebrations. He has had 45 solo exhibitions across Australia and around the world including London, Rome, Hong Kong, Houston and New York. He has won many art awards and was a finalist in the Archibald Prize.

Glenn will talk about the artist’s works in the Van Gogh, Dalí and Beyond exhibition, prior to the film. Narrated by Orson Wells, Jean-Christophe Averty’s film Salvador Dalí: A Soft Self Portrait (1969) is set in Dalí’s hometown of Lligat, Spain where the artist takes the viewer on a tour of the creative process behind his remarkable body of avant-garde works. Part Three of the Friends trilogy of Indigenous Art tours looks at the richest Indigenous arts prize in the country. A national award, the WAIAA celebrates art from all corners of Indigenous Australia. This year 16 finalists have been selected from as far-flung places as Tasmania, Lockhart River north of Cairns, Patjarr in the Western Desert, the Tiwi Islands and Warmun in remote Western Australia. Clotilde will select works in a range of media to reveal the breadth, diversity and excellence that contemporary Indigenous art offers.
