Mothering Sunday was so lovely this year. The weather behaved itself and we managed to get through the whole day (with three generations in the household) without a hiccup...bliss! The sun shone, the dinner a success and smiles all round, even losing an hour in bed couldn’t dampen my mood. A repeat is requested for Easter please! Check containers and hanging baskets daily to see if they need watering – even if it’s been wet, rain doesn’t always get into your containers, so keep an eye on them just in case. 2. You’ve hopefully got a fantastic display of flowers at this time of year so do try to deadhead them to maintain displays and encourage more growth. 3. Trim hedges (if you’re sure there are no nests or existing ones have been vacated, remember that some birds come back for a second brood though). If you’re unsure, you can wait a little bit longer.
Design Tip: Focal Points The purpose of a focal point in the garden is to ‘bring the garden into focus’ - and while it might sound pretentious what it’s really about is leading or directing the garden viewer’s eye to a particular point or points in a garden. It’s almost like a signpost that tells a viewer where to look and give their attention and in looking at the focal point the setting around it, the rest of the garden, suddenly seems to come into focus too. It’s a typical designer’s trick but we all tend to do it inside our homes without thinking – the fireplace, the coffee table with a striking ornament or flower arrangement, the large screen TV on the wall – all of these things are focal points, but they give balance and context to the rest of the room they’re in. The same principle applies to the outdoor space too. The means of creating focal points in the garden are limitless – you can create them with sculptures, plant pots, colour, planting, structures, water, doorways, shapes, collections of things – the list does go on and on. The trick to using focal points though is to limit them; you only want 1 per ‘viewing area’ or section of a garden otherwise they will compete with each other and the viewer’s focus of the garden will be lost.
Three plants that are looking great at the moment are:
1. Verbena bonariensis – these plants have a wonderful ‘see though’ and stylish quality and despite them being 1-1.5m tall they can be placed front, middle or back of the border. Having very small but tightly packed clusters of lilac flowers on tall narrow stems, butterflies love this plant. It prefers full sun and a slightly sheltered aspect. Looks great planted in drifts and with ornamental grasses. 2. Philadelphus ‘Belle Etoile’ is a compact variety of the mock orange shrub reaching only 1.2m in height, it has white flowers with a splash of purple in the centre and a delicious scent. A tough shrub that will grow in most soils even in polluted areas; it prefers full sun to part shade and is a great low maintenance addition to a mixed border. 3. Astrantia major – is an old cottage garden favourite but is making a bit of a comeback in some of the more contemporary settings. The flowers are like small pin cushions and it comes in a many varieties for example, ‘Claret’ is a deep rich ruby colour whereas ‘Pink Penny’ is a softer more pastel pink. The flowers peak at 90cms in height above the leafy base; it likes full sun to part shade and is happy in moist rich soil. Celebrate the bicentenary of the Royal Pump Rooms at the
‘A First Class Watering Place’ exhibition. The exhibition will explore the whole 200 year history of this landmark building, with a focus on the years 1814, 1864, 1914 and 1964. Find out about the people who built the Royal Pump Rooms and the major redevelopments that were made in the 1860s. Discover the role the building had during the First World War, and the impact the introduction of the NHS had on the services that were provided here. The Royal Pump Rooms opened in summer 1814; it was the first and only bath house to be built in the fashionable area of the town north of the river Leam. From then until the 1900s, spa and medical treatments were provided in the building. The Royal Pump Rooms also functioned as a centre for entertainments in the town.

Featuring a huge variety of fashions from The Fashion Outlet, including Dash, Kids on the Cat Walk, Kozi Kidz, Lands End, Just Elegance, Roman, CMD, Weird Fish and Cotton Traders, there will be something for everyone.
