LEAMINGTON SPA’S VERY OWN COMEDY FESTIVAL IS BACK WITH A BANG! There’s something funny going on again in Leamington this month as the towns very own comedy festival returns in October with yet another a stellar line up. Now in its third year, it’s becoming a bit of a fixture in the local calendar. Mark Makin, one of the festivals directors told us “It’s grown really fast and with ten venues this year, there’s even more comedy to be seen so we think people will be pleased with the line-up again this time round”. We think they will too as that line-up includes Milton Jones from “Mock the Week” and four series of his own Radio 4 comedy show, comedy legend Jasper Carrott, Never Mind the This year’s lineup includes Jasper Carrott (left) Henning Wehn (centre) and Milton Jones (far right)
Buzzcocks stalwart Sean Hughes, “They Think it’s all Over” star Rory McGrath, a welcome return for “Would I lie to You” regular and German comedy ambassador, Henning Wehn and Live at the Apollo star, Paul Chowdhry. With appearances also from Sara Pascoe, Jarred Christmas, Andrew Lawrence as well as comedy quizzes, family events and even a comedy café there really should be something for everyone. Mark says this is again a deliberate ploy as the aim is for the festival to have as broad an appeal as it can. He told us,

Accountants, Taxation & Business Advisors All businesses that have people working for them must open a PAYE scheme with HMRC, including all companies since directors are classed as employees of the company.
We offer to all our clients a full payroll package, operating the payroll, producing payslips and filing the required forms by the required deadlines. If your business does not require a fully operated payroll system during the year, we will still be able to file the end of year forms by the appropriate deadline. This is a service used by a majority of our limited company clients who operate on an annual basis. As with the majority of taxes PAYE needs to be reported to HMRC online and payments need to be paid by their approved methods which are generally debit/ credit card, direct debit, BACS payment or internet transfer. If you require us to operate the payroll on your behalf we will require the following information about each employee including directors for limited companies: • Name • Address • Date of Birth • National Insurance Number • P45 from previous employment or • P46 if no P45 available (we will provide this form) • Rate of Pay • Frequency of Pay
As well as the above information we will also need to know of any taxable benefits each employee may have including directors of the company.
If you are unsure if an item is a taxable benefit please contact the office and we will advise appropriately. The CT41G will generally have been completed by ourselves at the initial interview along with 64-8’s for the company and the directors (all directors need to complete a personal tax return - see personal tax page) which allow us to Communicate with HMRC on your behalf. Your Corporation Tax must be paid by the normal due date which is nine months after the year end of your Corporation Tax accounting period. For example, if your company’s accounting period ends on 31st May’ your Corporation Tax payment is due on or before 1st March the following year. From 1st April 2011 all companies must pay their Corporation Tax electronically. We must file your Company Tax Return within 12 months of the end of your company’s accounting period. If you file your return late your company will be charged an automatic penalty, even if it does not owe any Corporation Tax. It is beneficial to complete these forms in a timely manner in order that any discrepancy or queries can be rectified and in order to avoid any fiscal penalties which start at £100 for a late return rising to £500 plus interest of up to 100% of the tax due depending on the circumstances. In order for us to ensure these deadlines are adhered to it is important we receive the company’s books in good time. We will remind you of the company obligations as necessary and can assist you with you books and bookkeeping should it be required. Once the accounts are completed we will invite you into the office for a meeting to discuss the company’s figures and the tax situation and to explain any liability or refund arising. We will then finalise the return and accounts and send them to the directors for signing before submitting both the accounts and Corporation Tax Return on the company’s behalf. We will also advise you of the final tax position of the company and the due dates for any due payments if applicable.

Companies House. All companies, both private and public, must keep accounting records and both limited companies and limited liability partnerships must send a copy of their annual accounts to Companies House each year. If you produce and file accounts on behalf of a company, you must ensure they are signed or authenticated by the accountants (if appropriate) and the company’s directors. All limited companies - public and private - and limited liability partnerships (LLPs) must file their annual accounts and reports on time. If they fail to do so, they face an automatic fine. The time allowed for filing depends on whether the accounts are the first or subsequent accounts and whether it is a private limited or public limited company. For private companies and LLPs, if the first accounts cover more than 12 months they must be delivered to Companies House within 21 months of the date of incorporation, or three months from the end of the accounting period, whichever comes later. If the accounts are for 12 months or less they must be delivered within nine months of the end of the accounting period. Thereafter accounts must be delivered within 9 months of the company’s year end. Failure to file accounts in the correct legal format within the filing deadline results in the following late filing penalties which are for private limited companies:

In addition to this every company must also send an annual return to Companies House each year. It provides important company information, in a prescribed format, which is then made available to the public. Annual returns must be sent to Companies House by a specific ‘made up’ date - usually the anniversary of the company’s date of incorporation or the anniversary of the last annual return filed at Companies House. Please note that this return is not a financial return, rather it is merely to keep Companies House updated with details of any changes in the company’s officers or shareholding. At Grineaux Accountants we keep close observation on all company filing dates and endeavour to ensure no deadlines are ever breached. We will of course also file all accounts and returns on your behalf. This is of course dependent on receiving the company’s base records in good time but of course we do regularly remind our clients of any upcoming filing dates.

The VAT registration threshold is currently £73,000 and you must register for VAT if any of the following applies:
In order for us to keep a close eye on your personal tax affairs we rely not only on the information we receive from HM Revenue & Customs but also the information we receive from yourselves since, you will not be surprised to hear, we do not always receive our agent’s copies of information from HMRC.

Obviously the more up to date the information we receive, the quicker we can check it and then if necessary instruct HMRC to correct it, therefore we suggest that if you receive such items as tax demands, tax calculations, PAYE code numbers, tax forms or anything you do not understand or were not expecting then please send us a copy at your earliest convenience.
• Sales, Purchases and Expenses Invoices
• Your VAT taxable turnover was more than £73,000 in the previous twelve months • If you take over a VAT registered business as a going concern • If you think your VAT taxable turnover may exceed the threshold in the next 30 days You may also voluntary register for VAT if circumstances require you to do so, such as your customer will only deal with VAT registered businesses or if all of your sales are zero rated but your purchases are standard rated. The VAT registration threshold changes usually once a year which is announced in the budget. If any of the above situations apply to your business please do not hesitate to contact us and we will be able to advise you on any issues including which VAT scheme is best suited to your business needs. There are currently a number VAT schemes operated by HMRC which include industry specific schemes. However, the most common general schemes are as follows: • Invoice Basis – VAT is calculated using the date of the invoice. • Cash Accounting – VAT is calculated on payments made and receipts received, rather than using the invoice date • Flat Rate – VAT is calculated as a percentage of VAT inclusive turnover with no adjustment for VAT on purchases. The percentage is industry related
VAT is now reported to HMRC using their online service and payment of any liability needs to be paid using one of their approved methods, which is generally debit/ credit card, internet transfer, BACS payment or direct debit. We offer all our clients a full VAT service from applying VAT registration to compiling VAT returns and submitting them HMRC. We are also able to give advice on any VAT issues you may have, for example if a transaction is subject to VAT or what rate of VAT to charge.
The main information we require is that in order complete your personal Self Assessment Tax Return, which we usually first request in the May following the 5th April tax year end. The deadline for filing your return might be the following 31st January but we must stress that the later the return is left to be completed the bigger the effect of any mistake or oversight made. This can lead to substantial underpayments of tax therefore the sooner we complete your return the better it is for all concerned. Not only that, but if you are due a refund then late submission simply delays your receipt of any monies owed to you. When we write to you we will request the information we would normally expect someone in your situation and type of business to have available but if you are in any doubt please contact the office either by phone or email and we will only be too glad to advise you as to what we need to meet HMRC’s disclosure requirements.

Once we have prepared your self employed, partnership or company accounts we will invite you to our premises for a meeting to discuss the tax situation and to explain the origins of any liabilities or refunds due. We will then complete the tax returns and send them to you for a final check and your signature before we submit them to HMRC. We will at this time also advise you of the final tax position and, if any payments are due when they are to be made. Also, if you prefer, we can email your tax return to a secure email address in the form of a pdf file as well as or instead of a paper copy.

IN THE GARDEN
With Autumn and dark nights upon us, there’s still plenty to do in the garden. A little preparation now will bring great results next Spring...
Autumn Chores Just when you thought that all was done in the garden for this year - out comes the sun, and there’s loads to do again. I’m sure we didn’t expect the gorgeous burst of Indian Summer we were lucky enough to experience. Planning for the following year is something that gardeners of the most established gardens will no doubtedly and meticulously undertake to ensure the best from next years show of flowers. Due to the very dry summer, you may find that your lawn is patchy and in need of some TLC. Now is a great time for doing some repair work - sowing grass seeds, (if you didn’t do this last month). Scarify and aerate existing lawns. Brush sharp sand into the spiked holes. Last chance for a lawn autumn feed. Keep mowing - but with blades set higher. Still time to plant some bulbs - but soon.
Out with the summer bedding plants when finished flowering. Clear up all fallen leaves and put them on the compost heap. Keep dead-heading roses - they could flower until Christmas, especially with this weather! It’s planting time for shrubs, conifers, perennials, roses and trees. Plant out your spring flowering plants. Pansies, wallflowers etc Bring in your Dahlia tubers. Carry on with shrub cuttings. A good time for dividing your hardy perennials. It is usually a good time to paint fencing and trellis. The plants can be moved back from the fence more easily now. Carry on picking fruit as it ripens Plant out your spring cabbage - but net them against hungry pigeons. Plant out autumn onion sets and garlic. Dig up your remaining potatoes - not much use after they are hit by frost!
Grease bands on the fruit trees. As soon as leaves have fallen, treat peaches and nectarines with copper fungicide to help control leaf curl. Spray cherries with copper as well - it helps prevent bacterial canker. Start digging in some organic manure into the veg. plot. All of the Asparagus ‘ferns’ can now be cut down. Prune your blackberries - Simply cut out all of the growths that have fruited this year. Any tender plants need to be bought into the greenhouse now! Remove all traces of shading from greenhouse glass - wash down if dirty. Line your greenhouse with bubble polythene - if you need to conserve heat for the winter. Make sure that heaters are working - before you need them! Reduce watering now, and only water in the mornings. Still keep an eye out for hot days, when your ventilators may need opening.
