When Captain Chris Rigby retired from operational flying 2 years ago, he wondered how he could somehow utilise the flying knowledge that he had acquired over the last 40 years. With over 20,000 flight hours, mainly on the Boeing 737, and having worked for Britannia/Thomsons Airways, British Airways, easyJet and lastly Ryanair, he wanted to find something that would allow him to share that experience with everyone who was interested in flying.

Chris, who regularly lectures about aviation on cruise ships around the world and runs Fear of Flying courses, hit on the idea of buying and operating a flight simulator for the general public to live out their dream. He located a real motion simulator, a Boeing 737-800, originally owned by Sabena Airlines of Belgium, that was for sale. This was shipped to Coventry Airport last May and has since then it has had hundreds of wanabee pilots testing their metal in one of the most pressure environments in the world. Just recently a Boeing 747-400, which was one of Aer Lingus’s training machines has been added to the fleet and is now ready for boarding. Most of the instructors at Flight Simulators Midlands are retired airline pilots who have thousands of hours in aircraft of all types and have flown the world. Situated in the hangar of the Coventry Aeroplane Club, would be pilots first have a half hour briefing on how a modern aircraft flies and works. They then make their way past the real aircraft in the hangar before boarding the aircraft of their choice. Their instructor will make sure they are seated comfortably and strapped in and they are off, around the mountains of Salzburg or the skyscrapers of Hong Kong. Guests can choose from a number of different airports, worldwide, to fly to and

WHAT IS PARKINSON’S DISEASE? To raise awareness for MS awareness week between 29th April and 5th May Emma Thomas Specialist in Neurological and Stroke Physiotherapy is writing about the condition this month. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurological condition which affects around 100,000 people in the UK. Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20-40, but it can affect younger and older people too. Almost three times as many women have MS as men.

What is MS? MS happens because of damage to the nerve fibres in the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord). Nerves enable the brain to communicate with the body; they are coated with a substance called myelin that helps messages to be relayed quickly and smoothly along them. When someone has MS their immune system mistakes myelin for a foreign body and attacks it causing it to be stripped partially or completely from the nerves. This causes the messages that travel along the nerves to be slowed down, distorted or lost altogether. The damage to the myelin is accrued over time and this is what causes the accumulation of disability in people with MS. No one really knows what the exact cause of MS is. There are a lot of theories but most experts agree that it is a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Research into the different theories of what causes MS is on-going.

Symptoms of MS Symptoms can occur in any part of the body and affect each person differently. Most people will develop a few of the symptoms, but are unlikely to develop all of them. The way the symptoms develop is unpredictable with some people’s symptoms becoming steadily worse (progressive MS) and some people’s symptoms coming and going (relapsing remitting MS). • Balance problems – balance needs a good interaction between our eyes, parts of the inner ear and the sensory feedback from the body, the brain needs to process the information. A disruption to the nerve supply from any of these can cause balance problems. • Sensory changes – changes can cause numbness or tingling.

• Spasms and stiffness – this is described as spasticity. It is an increase in the tone, the resistance or tension, of a muscle. It makes muscles harder to move and harder to relax. • Tremor – this is a rhythmical shaking that cannot be controlled. They can be small movements of large movements. • Dizziness – the inner ear gives our brain information on how the head is positioned, if these messages become unclear it can result in dizziness. • Difficulty walking – this can be as a result of a number of factors including muscle weakness, spasticity, poor balance, dizziness, fatigue and pain. • Pain – pain can be musculoskeletal, from the muscles and joints or can be neuropathic, caused by the damage to the nerves. • Poor vision – the first sign of MS for around 1 in 5 people is problems with the eyes. Problems can include reduced vision, colour blindness, involuntary movements of the eyes (nystagmus), and eye pain. • Fatigue – this can be very difficult to explain to other people. It is an overwhelming tiredness that can fluctuate day-to-day, week-to-week and even within the space of a day. • Cognitive problems – these are problems with memory and thinking. It can become difficult to remember recent events, to remember to do things and to solve problems. • Reduced bladder and bowel function – this can cause incontinence or constipation. • Problems with speech or swallowing – this can be problems with forming the words with the mouth and tongue or finding the right words. The ability to swallow can be affected. • Mental health problems – it is quite common for people

two day workshops during the year. Caroline has

recently won the reward for best newcomer in the Art 2 exhibition and was rewarded by her own exhibition at the Art College in Banbury.

The year is split into sessions of five weeks, with

sessions, with the first one as drawing. We generemulate Caroline, but even with help, some of us struggle, although we have a good laugh trying.

It is a small friendly group, who also socialise for lunches and outings. Coach trips to exhibitions are occasionally arranged and are usually very enjoyable with good attendance. The last one was to the Manet and Hunter exhibitions.

We hope that our loyal fans will visit as usual and hope that we can encourage new visitors. We

would like an opportunity to show off our work, including unfinished ones and you might see

something that you would like to buy, as some will be for sale.

GARDENING ADVICE FOR MAY...

May is a capricious month, one day lulling you into a sense of security with balmy temperatures and sunshine, and then next day surprising you with a sharp frost. However tempting it is to get all those plants you have lovingly grown (or bought) planted outside, this is a time when you need to be cautious. Frosts have been known in this region as late as the end of May so be prepared and have fleece at hand to tuck round sensitive plants when the forecast looks dodgy.

Peonies have particularly striking, opulent blooms and benefit from being supported so you can get the benefit of their romantic beauty.

Finally, choose plants which respond well to drier conditions. The lovely peony, for instance, is surprisingly drought tolerant once it’s established. Lavenders, Hebes, Perovskia, Nicotiana, Geraniums all thrive in dry conditions.
