We had eaten here before in the past, and I only remember that it was a dull and uninviting place to dine. But what a huge difference and pleasant surprise! The new owners, Nev Boon and Mark Connors have totally refurbished the restaurant, it’s now contemporary, it’s light, bright and the new oak flooring looks clean and very impressive. The ambience of the restaurant has been further enhanced by lovely white wood blinds, with some excellent contemporary wall art on canvas, blending in perfectly with the traditional old oak beams and trusses. In addition, there is a large canvass print of Market Hill circa early 1960’s which is very impressive and provoked much discussion of old times. There is also an addition of a lovely log burning stove, can’t wait to the winter to feel the warmth and glow that only wood burners can provide! Our meal was brilliant, we chose of the Specials’ Menu, which is chalked up on a very contemporary looking mirror. I had the 16oz T-bone steak which was cooked to perfection and

LOCAL DRAGONBOATING PODIATRIST “If you always do what you always did,you’ll always get what you always got” - These are wise words from Henry Ford (Founder of the Ford Motor Company), but they don’t necessarily apply to dragonboating nor podiatry! In any sport that involves a sprint, how you get off the start line is vitaly important. If you are ahead of your competitors, you immediately gain a psychological advantage. The momentum is with you, and if you are as strong as them & your technique as good as them, then you should be able to maintain that lead all the way to the finish line. So in our dragonboat training, we spend a lot of time practising our race starts. We have to find the fastest way of moving over 2000kg of combined weight from a standing start against the force of water resistance. For the past couple of years, Pershore Phoenix have used a start pattern that has served us well, and we have continued with it through this year’s winter training. However, we have discovered in this summer’s race season that the other teams have tweaked their start patterns to give them an advantage over us, so by doing what we always did, we are not getting what we always got! Namely, we have been left standing a bit on the start line, none moreso last month than at the furthest league venue (Stockton-on-Tees). Unfortunately, I missed this race day due to my holiday, but we apparently struggled to compete against the other premiership teams.

Like race starts, verrucae (warts on feet) are the bane of my life. As with the common cold, there is no known cure for them. Caused by nothing more than a single-celled organism, providing guaranteed success in the fight against this virus is the holy grail for many Podiatrists. We thought we’d found the answer many years ago, with the introduction of Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT). Initial results were promising, and Health First was one of the few Podiatry clinics in the Midlands to offer what was an advanced treatment technique. Indeed I saw first hand how good it could be when I carried out a course of laser treatment on one of my patients who had a one-inch diameter verruca for over 20 years. Nothing pleased him nor me more than when the longstanding problem disappeared 4 weeks after the treatment was completed. Unfortunately, whilst LLLT is great because it is a non-painful treatment, it has proved to be no more successful than other simple treatments such as verruca paints or the use of duct tape. At my clinic, whilst we still offer LLLT, we achieve better results with cryotherapy (freezing) and/or strong acid treatment, the downside of which is substantial & repeated discomfort for the patient. Maybe it was time to consider something different. Not necessarily new, just a different approach. I then came across Falknor’s needling technique which was developed in the 1960’s but for some reason didn’t take off at the time. However recently, there have been reports of success levels to match or better the painful options described above, but without the pain and requiring only one (or occasionally two) treatments. Its a simple, safe technique performed under local anaesthetic that I have started offering to my patients. Its too early for me to claim that its the best thing since sliced bread for resolving verrucae, but initial results are certainly encouraging. Could we find a race start that would also make a difference? We tried tweaks we thought would do the trick, and practised the starts over & over again, before travelling to Exeter for their highly enjoyable day of dragon boat racing (its our favourite venue, but don’t tell the others!). A real party atmosphere exudes at their event due to its location in the docks with pubs, restaurants, & quaint shops providing an additional draw for many spectators to cheer us on. Armed with our new race start, and with the boost from the crowds, we got that all important lead in most races, that eventually saw Pershore Phoenix in the Major Plate semi-final late in the afternoon. The race could not have been closer with all 3 teams crossing the finish line together. It was a photo finish, with only 7 hundredths of a second separating us (that’s less than a dragon’s nostril!). We patiently waited for the result, which fortunately went in our favour, but then we had to repeat our excellent performance for the final. Using the last remnants of energy after a hard day’s racing in the glorious sunshine, and spurred on by Andy Murray as he played his final at the same time, we powered down the course to yet another close finish. This time we won by 2 tenths of a second (more like a dragon’s head!) to claim the title “Exeter Major Plate Final Champions”. BEAUTIFUL, PRACTICAL, AFFORDABLE ...What are you waiting for? There is something extremely appealing and neat about a block paved garden or driveway. With such a wide range of styles, types, colours and sizes of block pavers there are also many design possibilities to suit every property type. Block paving is considered for most to be more attractive than basic, plain tarmacadam surfaces for driveways. It can be relatively inexpensive if you choose the basic rectangular blocks. One major block paving manufacturer estimates the costs as being split 20% blocks, 80% labour, hard core and sand. Basic blocks can be purchased from £8 or £10 per square metre up to over £25 per metre, so overall costs should be between £50 and £100+ per metre. However, complex patterns and additional items such as edging, steps and drainage can be added to these figures. Individual blocks can be lifted and replaced if they are damaged, or stained with oil, diesel or petrol spillages. Because block pavers are manufactured rather than cut from natural stone, block sizes tend to be very accurate and uniform. No specialist machinery is required (as there is with tarmacadam surfaces) hence small areas should not necessarily be

proportionately more expensive per square metre, as when there are high set-up costs. Concrete block paving is cost effective when compared to clay pavers or natural stone blocks such as granite setts. Block paving is suitable for both domestic and commercial applications. SAVE HOLYWELL FIELD Redrow wants to build a housing estate on Holywell field

field is part of Southam’s Area of Restraint Holywell around the Stowe Valley. It is a beautiful ancient natural

resource for local people. The Holy Well is a Grade II Listed monument. For more than 1,000 years this area has been enjoyed by local people. If Redrow’s plans go ahead then the Holy Well area will be spoiled for future generations.

Do you want to do something about it? Redrow have distributed a leaflet to a small number of local properties asking for residents’ views. Their questions are written so they can manipulate the answers. The more people we can get to respond the more chance they will back down. All responses must be sent to Redrow by 9th August. If you haven’t received a flyer and want your voice to be heard then email the campaign group and we will send you a copy of Redrow’s flyer to return to them.
