We also welcome marketing guru and yogini, Danielle Lopes to our team. And last but not least thank you to my beautiul friend Tazneem (@wisdomandwellness) for doing 100 headstands with me to get the perfect partner Yoga shot seen on the right.

April is Beauty Month here at Yoga Journal and we’re sharing our favorite cruelty-free beauty finds. And for expecting mum’s, our yoga teachers share their top tips on doing Yoga during pregnancy.
MY MONTH OF YOGA I paid a visit to the beautifully serene The Yoga Republic for a Hot 26+ Yoga (Bikram Yoga) class at with Eliza Roza, the heat took me out of my comfort zone but this class was worth every drop of sweat!
When I first discovered Budokon, like most people I was mesmerised. In early March I was able to attend the 2 Week Primary Series Self-Practice Workshop with Dave Gardner, which set me up with a strong self-practice for times when i can’t make it to a class. YOGA POWER COUPLE MEET YOGA’S POWER COUPLE TEGAN AND DAVE By Nicole Jowett
With a mutual passion for yoga, Tegan and Dave embody the term “Power Couple” as Yoga instructors, and yogapreneurs. As a certified Jivamuki Yoga instructor at Living Yoga Craighall (an affiliated Jivamukti studio), and founder of sell-out Women’s Retreats, Tegan Burger is the picture of a strong woman. To add to her impressive accomplishments, she is studying an intensive B.Sc. Nutritional Science to practice nutritional therapy and offers her students free audio Yoga classes on her website. Tegan studied Jivamukti Yoga in New York, where she learned the nuances of this unique style of Yoga. Through her Yoga studies she found her passion for helping people, which made her decision to study Nutritional Science a natural one. The other half of this impressive duo, Dave Gardner, is a qualified Synergy Yoga and Budokon Yoga instructor and is pioneering Budokon in South Africa with his classes and workshops. Dave studied Synergy Yoga under Jim Harrington and Simon Borg-Olivier, having a passion for Martial Arts, he realised the importance of Yoga as a conditioning tool both mentally and physically. When he discovered Cameron Shayne and Budokon, the culmination of Yoga and mixed martial arts was a breakthrough. He trained in Belgium to be South Africa’s first Budokon instructor and then went on to study in Miami, with the support of Tegan who then joined him in the Budokon training in Germany. While their combined Yoga journey has brought them together, they have maintained their individual goals and styles of teaching.
“You’re moving because you have a direction, the fluidity makes sense”
TEGAN’S TAKE ON JIVAMUKTI YOGA Time magazine named Jivamukti Yoga one of the important forms of Hatha yoga taught in the world today. Jivamukti is a structured style of Yoga, a lineage of Ashtanga Yoga, that can be vigorous or gentle and is influenced by music and the Focus of the Month. “You’re moving because you have a direction, the fluidity makes sense,” said Tegan. Each class has a clear purpose and meaning, and follows a 12-point structure ensuring a similar experience in any Jivamukti class around the world. The Jivamukti Focus of the month uses classic Yoga teachings that are relevant to the student and teacher’s life, while the music in each class is a representation of the teacher’s individual style. “I think that the music element that comes into a Jivamukti class is really what separates different teachers and using the music as a tool to connect to the Jivamukti Focus of the month,” said Tegan. www.theyogajournal.co.za

WHATS NEXT FOR BUDOKON IN SOUTH AFRICA
To compliment her Yoga classes at Living Yoga, Tegan offers free, easy to download 30 and 60-minute audio yoga classes. The decision to do audio classes, instead of video classes is motivated by her belief that a Yoga practice should be empowering and not be dependent on having to watch a video. You can download the audio classes from www.teganbyoga.com.
With nothing else like it in South Africa, Budokon is about bringing Yoga, calisthenics, and martial arts enthusiasts together, creating a sense of family amongst the respective arts. This year South Africa will see some of the best in Budokon grace our shores, with the driving force of Dave and Tegan’s passion. Some of the highlights on the Budokon calendar for this year include, Senior Budokon Teacher and Black Belt, Donato Helbling in South Africa for the first time, holding workshops in Cape Town and Johannesburg. In September, the Founders of Budokon, Cameron and Melayne Shayne will be in South Africa hosting 50-hour Primary and Second Series Teacher Training’s in Johannesburg.
TEGAN’S TOP NUTRITION TIP Omega 3 Fatty Acids combined with Vitamin’s D and B are the “Keys to Life” and health. This combination improves, mood, energy production and overall good health.

KOMBUCHA {kom-boo-chuh} EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE BIGGEST TREND IN HEALTH
With an increased focus on health and well-being, you might want to add kombucha to your vocabulary.

cannot exist outside a certain time of year depending on what is in season.” Comments Meghan Werner, founder of Theonista products. Along with organic teas sourced from South Africa, Asia, and South America, only 100% pure fruit, root, and/or botanical extracts and infusions are used, meaning no artificial flavors, colorants, or preservatives. The taste of her brew can be described as a sweet-tart-tangy-zippy kind, with a light fizz and is best enjoyed cold. The refreshing tea is full of living probiotics, organic enzymes, vitamins and minerals so drink up! Your body will thank you.
Kombucha – pronounced ‘kom-boo-chuh’, is a unique beverage that carries overall health-enhancing properties. Brewmistress Meghan Werner, originally intended her tea’s for her own personal consumption, but when a few samples got out, Meghan began brewing and bottling for the masses, under her company name – Theonista. These creations are produced and bottle by hand, locally, at her facility based in Woodstock, and from there, distributed around Cape Town and the greater South Africa. Kombucha is made by fermenting tea and sugar with a specific culture called a SCOBY. This SCOBY is a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast. Most of the sugar is used by the SCOBY during the fermentation process, making way for a list of health benefits including enhanced digestion, energy and improved skin and hair quality. The range

Local athleisure and activewear brand, MOVEPRETTY, is a culmination of the best in fashion and sport. Founded by friends, Olympic South African Triathlete Mari Rabie, and fashion designer Annelize Kotze. The brand understands that women want to look and feel their best even when exercising. Annelize designs with the active, dynamic woman in mind, while Mari ensures the garments are functional for exercise, resulting in maximum flexibility and movement in each design. “It is important to us that each ‘prettymove’ has a touch of delight – that small surprise that makes the woman wearing it feel special and pretty. Examples include pocket detail, subtle gold branding, pretty stitching on the inside of the garment, beautiful packaging, and a personalised customer service experience,” says Annelize. Thanks to the urban sports-luxe influences in their designs, there’s no need to change after your yoga or pilates class to grab brunch with friends or running errands. “If you train five hours per day, you don’t want to think about comfort – it should be a given,” says Mari. The price point is what we really love, with prices ranging from R350 to R850, a studio to street wardrobe wont break the bank. Their newest Summer 2017 range, is all about feminine silhouettes in soft pastel tones. This range also features three of the biggest trends of the year; mesh panels, off-the-shoulder, and printed waistbands. Pastel shades are set off by modern muted tones of black and greys. Shop MOVEPRETTY online at movepretty.com - also available at selected stockists across South Africa.

TRY THESE MOVEMENTS Add stability to your shoulder stand. Roll back on the wheel with your lower back resting on the wheel and your shoulders on the floor and hands holding on the wheel for stability, or resting on the floor. Aid and deepen backbends. Position the wheel at the base of the spine and roll back to rest the head on the floor (If your head doesn't reach the floor don't worry!) Stretch arms over head, or hold onto the wheel. The lower the wheel is on the spine, the deeper the stretch will be. Improve standing balances. Challenge your core strength and balance by standing in Mountain pose or Tree pose on the wheel. Improve control, balance, and flexibility in forearm stands. Pressing the wheel to your head while in forearm stand poses improves balance, while being able to rest your feet on the wheel helps to improve confidence and flexibility in backbend forearm stands. Deepen forward folds. Place the wheel at your feet to deepen forward folds. Strength and conditioning for handstand press. Use the wheel for pike presses to condition the core to eventually press up without the wheel. Hugging the wheel between the calf and hamstring activates leg muscles needed for a handstand press. Partner meditation. Sit back-to-back with your partner, place the wheel between your shoulder blades and press against your partners back. Maintain the contact with the wheel during the meditation using breathing techniques.

MICROGREENS
WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL? By Zissy Lewin
BIGGER ISN’T ALWAYS BETTER Whilst our phones are getting bigger, plants are getting smaller. Microgreens and veggies may be tinier and younger than their grown-up counterparts but they pack a powerful flavour and nutritional punch. What are Microgreens? Microgreens are densely grown veggie seedlings that are cut when they are less than 14 days old. According to researchers* these tiny greens have four to five times the nutrients than their fully grown counterparts.
Micro
Veggies include beet, kale, basil, pea and spinach and contain high concentrations of vitamins C and E and beta-carotene. They also contain less fibre than fully grown vegetables so you shouldn’t view them as a replacement but rather an addition. For those with green thumbs, they’re also incredibly easy to grow and can be grown indoors with minimal space required. As Living Seeds** explains, all you need is seeds, soil, shallow pots or trays with draining holes and sunlight to grow ready to eat microgreens in two weeks. How to eat Microgreens?
Microgreens are densely grown veggie seedlings that are cut when they are less than 14 days old.
Microgreens were once just a garnish, but have now become part of a dish. A little bit of olive oil, balsamic vinegar and salt and pepper turn them into a side salad. Add them to your salads, sandwiches, eggs or sprinkled on top of noodle soup or Buddha bowl. *Journal of Agricultural and Food Industry **http://livingseeds.co.za/growing-microgreens.html
