Storytelling Series: TO HONOUR AN ELDER FOR MIDWIFING THE PRESENCE OF YOGA IN OUR WORLD TODAY Lesley Athol Warther is an insightful storyteller and astrologer, embodying and enlivening a yogic way. In this piece Lesley shares her personal story while opening up our understanding of the critical steps that communities take to make spaces for phenomena like yoga practice and philosophy to become, in her words, “a continuum of experience”. You see, yoga wasn’t always as publicly accepted as it is today, especially in South Africa. During the years of nationalist ideologies and oppressive structures, yoga was not only unacceptable but it fell heavily within a way of being that was explicitly illegal. Yet we had the brave ones, the persistent and authentic ones who did the groundwork, carved the paths, listened to their callings for us to enjoy our yogic lifestyles in South Africa now. My intention in this article is to honour the brave and attentive ones. Lesley is the first in a series of storytellers who have midwifed and experienced the unfolding of yoga in the world today.

When did you start practicing yoga or when did yoga come into your life?

Well, it was once upon a time long, long ago when all good stories begin. A Judo school at the Rosebank Health Institute opened. My brother attended to help him cope with schoolboy bullies, and as all good stories unfold, my mother stumbled in one day to collect him and her knee gave way. Jan Vanderlinder suggested that she join a yoga class. A lady, he said, was using the Dojo during the day and her was certain it could help. My mother with 6 children in tow just did not have time for a conky knee, so she gave it a try. And like any perfect storm, our lives changed. Enter the most beautiful woman, Michelaine Leppan.

When was that, what year roughly?

That would have been in the early 1960’s, I was a little over 10 years old. Yoga was a word that we had heard from Woodstock and ‘hippyville’ and it was associated with spirituality, mantras and Rasta hairstyles.

The nationalistic attitude of the day frowned heavily on these “cultish” movements, because they were “not good for you”. I was confused. Beautiful Mickey Leppan with a smile from ear to ear, comfortably seated in the lotus position, quiet and serene, holding the space and gently guiding our breathing, our movements and our world, how could that not be good for us? Our classes were small, there were never more than 6 people in the class and all the people were very much my mothers age, each colourful and rebellious in their own way. I experienced the philosophy of yoga long before I understood anything about the various schools of yoga from the way Mickey held the space. The connection, the within and without, that yoking together not only of each individual but the individuals in the room. My first experience of the power of the collective.

Is that something like [the way of] Ubuntu?

Very like Ubuntu. The magic of acceptance and through that a kind of celebrated permission to just be.

Was there any reason that you needed to go to yoga or did you just go with your mother?

I had always been in pain and by the age of 10 was diagnosed with an arthritic condition. This had not responded to medication or to soft splinting. The prognosis was not great but Mummy thought the benefit of stretching with Mickey would help.

Is that what she called it?

Yes, we called it stretching. After a session it seemed we had actually stretched, lengthened to take up more space. A kind of enhancement of femininity in the 60s – true feminine power, without the feminism bit.

It was all women?

In Mickey’s class it was all women. For the general public yoga, although exotic, was seen to be an easy way out, especially with the indulgence of relaxation. Gee, you know at the end of every session you did relaxation, wow (laughter) How indulgent, relaxation, what’s relaxation? (laughter).

So those were the mindsets of the day?

How is your body now?

Yes, the minds of the day were generally closed. Either by belief or, as is often the case with dominant authorities, fear. When I was told that the only available help for my aching joints would be surgery and pinned joints I turned to Sister Irene Bachman for the comfort of foot massages. This, I later understood was reflexology.

Yoga has kept me in conversation with my body, with the pain. This awareness made me an ideal candidate for the wisdom of homeopathy and under the guidance of Dr David Lilley, I have never looked back. The signature of elements in nature, the archetypes of Jungian philosophy and the sensibility of this perfect storm has been my guide.

Finding Astrology became the scaffold and formed the matrix onto which I pin all the wonder that we, spiritual beings, experience as we accept our humanness!

On arthritis, vegetarianism, yoga and the synchronicity of becoming whole…

As Sister Bachman massaged my feet, she suggested I limit my intake of meat, then chicken, then fish – I spent school holidays in Yoga class with my Mother and felt good. These things you couldn’t tell the medical fraternity without ridicule or a dismissive smile. But these therapies made sense to me. I could feel them, I could relate and make true sense – my senses all responded. How do you tell a Doctor of letters and science that you have fallen into a perfect storm, a vortex of healing. It felt wonderful to be in this world of “alternatives”. Here I was having reflexology and Mickey was telling stories of how important it was to speak to your feet in the lotus position. I was feeling wonderful and hungered for more and more experience, not only of my body, but my world.

On the politics of the day…

There was a lot of resistance because society was very conformist, there certainly were no books on the shelves, it was seen to be anti-Christian, it was seen to hold a lot of tension against the structure.

A threat?

A huge threat, huge fears around yoga and what yoga was and what it could do. And it fell on the other side of apartheid for white South Africans because it was what Indians did and Indians were on the other side of the color bar so why would you bring this across a divide? The philosophy was brought in with difficulty. Its hard to understand that in the late 50’s and early 60’s books on yoga were not available, they were just not allowed, there were no videos, there were no tapes, there was nothing that you could see. It was word of mouth, an oral tradition, it was experience. People travelled and came back to the country brining tales of wonder and challenge. ‘Searchers’, as we were called, fell foul of the apartheid laws, not allowed gatherings. Books by Allan Watts, a favourite in the USA, and others were occasionally smuggled in and brought in the philosophy of the East. In those days there were checks at the central post office – the entire basement of the central PO in Rissik Street manned by censors, people with black pens and permission to tear out pages of subversive literature. These were our moral guides of the time.

On the relationship between astrology and yoga, as a philosophy and experience….

My initial studying of astrology was to prove it wrong. I have written the book, but the more I researched the more I moved beyond it being either right or wrong. The teachings are ancient and when applied without manipulation and control, they hold answers and prompt deep questions. The astrologers of old were your mathematicians, physicians, scientists, cosmologists and artists and their cognizance of cycles, and the rhythms of the universe allowed them to bow to a sense of unfolding of not only our lives as individuals, but the cosmos. Words that are now used and thrown around like being, growth, integration, awareness, consciousness, holism and others, are reverently held within the birth chart. Cycles, seasons and unfolding of the individual becomes the flow of joy and life. Not self-fulfilling prophesies and fortune-telling. So astrology reminds us that we are more than we or others think we are, and that there is a time for every season, every experience and challenge. Yoga brings us the gift of tracking our inner joy, feeling the importance of oneness, trusting and knowing love. Breathing allows us to live inspired lives and to learn release and to rise above the fear of death. As I breathe, so I move thus I am alive – celebrate each movement, rather than punish your body.

Homeopathy allows us to truly experience each element, each plant, each motive on this planet as being vital and giving.

Archetypes and Philosophies allow us to dance with the as ifs and play with the gods, goddesses and storytellers. Nothing is out of place, it has a time, it has a season and so do we…

NUTRITION NUTRIGENOMICS FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH

Have you heard? You can now get your genes tested to find out what nutritional plan best suits your DNA. It may sound more like sci-fi than actual science but it’s absolutely true. And no, it’s not like the blood type diet!

It’s nutrigenetics. Scientifically-researched genetic testing. Recent advances have now made genetic testing available to the public. It helps us understand how some people on a high fat diet have no problem with their cholesterol, in contrast with others going through the roof. So no, banting is not for everyone - it really comes down to your unique genetic make-up. This is where nutrigenetics comes in, showing us why individuals respond differently to the same nutrients. This information is incredibly useful in regards to being proactive and using nutrigenomics to our benefit. This particular science uses bioactive components in food to “turn” on or off certain genes, known as gene expression. Although you can never alter your genes, you can have an impact on how they’re expressed, which ultimately has a beneficial effect on processes in the body. This is particularly exciting as it allows us to create accurate, personalised nutrition plans by using these functional foods. There have been numerous studies that show how macronutrients, micronutrients, and natural bioactive components (e.g. phytochemicals such as flavonoids, carotenoids) regulate gene expression. Your genes are responsible for every cellular process within the body, which means that gene expression influences our cellular defense processes. These are methylation (DNA repair process), detoxification, energy production, redox status (of which oxidation is a part) and inflammation.

So let’s take a step back - what are they actually testing? Your DNA is made up of a double strand helix joined by complimentary base pairs. You receive 50% of your genes from each parent and when your DNA is replicated, variants occur. This means that there is a different single base pair than there was originally. These are called Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) or also known as gene variants.

WHY NUTRIGENOMICS? NUTRIGENOMICS GIVES US THE ADVANTAGE OF KNOWING WHICH DIETARY INTERVENTIONS AND LIFESTYLE CHANGES CAN BE EMPLOYED TO ASSIST WITH THE PREVENTION OF DISEASE AND ENSURE OPTIMAL HEALTH.

Now that we know how these variants in our genes occur, let’s get back to how these bioactive c o m p o n e n t s a c t u a l l y i n fl u e n c e g e n e s . I n nutrigenomics, nutrients act like signals and are able to communicate with specific cells within the body.

Once a nutrient interacts with the system, it alters gene expression. Simply put, what you eat directly influences the genetic message your body receives.

Let’s look at practical examples of how these bioactive components in food can influence our genes. The bioactive phytochemical, sulforaphane, found in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, is essential in assisting your detoxification process.

Certain genes can be ‘’turned’’ on (upregulated) by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs are chemicals released from burning coal, oil, gasoline, tobacco or charcoal. This would be a case where gene expression can increase the risk for certain diseases through nutrition.

through and the anxiety attacks partially subsided, but later in the year as my stress levels began to rise, with a move to a new city looming, I had another attack. Again in the gym while training

I have been "addicted" to exercise for as long as I can remember. I love how the body works and how one can change ones body with movement and I have been on the gym and fitness scene for eighteen years since the age of 14. Through my life I have had many highs and lows and have achieved many things I have dreamed of through fitness.

But in 2016 my world came to a crashing halt when I started to get anxiety attacks. What really shook me was that my first attack happened in the gym while teaching a spinning class. The fear, confusion, embarrassment and panic was so overwhelming I couldn't teach again.

Anxiety often manifests after prolonged exposure to stress (of any type, depends on the individual) and also can happen when past trauma start to surface - I think mine was a combination of both. I pushed

with a client. I couldn't understand why it happened or how I could break free from it. The feeling was so overwhelming and the fear of it happening again was so intense that I had to stop everything I was doing and question where this anxiety was coming from. With severe anxiety and stress, often comes chronic fatigue and I found myself struggling to run a flight of stairs when in the past I could throw double gym sessions in one day! This gave me a new perspective and appreciation for my body. Gym was no longer an option, what used to drive and energize me, became an activity I could no longer relate to, my entire body screamed "NO" when I thought of going to the gym. Not just because of the memory of the anxiety attacks but I physically just didn't have the energy or strength.

I have always loved yoga and have been doing it on and off for nearly 14 years now but I had never quite committed and embraced it to it's full potential until now. I naturally gravitated towards it to try find an answer and an outlet for my anxiety. It has been the one thing that has been a constant support of calm and clarity in my life. For the past 8 months I have embraced it completely, mind body and soul, and it has been a driving force of strength and courage on the days when I have needed it. Yoga has also helped me stay strong and fit when my body just couldn’t cope with anything more than a few stretches and twists. A Yoga session helps me refocus my energy and calm my mind. As much as I loved gym, it is no longer what it used to be for me. Yoga has become my light in what sometimes feels like a dark tunnel. Chronic anxiety can be triggered by prolonged exposure to stress, past traumas resurfacing, or a very intense traumatic event.

When this happens, there is an irrational fear inside the persons head that becomes so overwhelming it paralyses them and ultimately stops them from living their life. Small things suddenly become huge obstacles (E.g. driving someone in a car is a huge obstacle for me). It is completely irrational thinking and as much as one tries to rationalize it, the brain kicks into overdrive and the person suffering from anxiety often retracts and isolates themselves from the world to "protect themselves” from this fear. They go into flight or fight mode. When the body is constantly in "fight or flight", the adrenal glands (and other hormones) work overtime to try help the bodies process what the brain is telling it.

The glands become exhausted and fatigued and can no longer function as they should. This effects the body as a whole and can take months if not years to correct.

Exercise is good for people struggling with anxiety but at the same time, exercise can often mimic an anxiety attack or can be too exhausting for the individual if they are struggling with mental and physical fatigue.

This is where yoga saved my life, all I needed was my body and my mat and I felt safe. I started off with simple basic movements, just to get the muscles stretching and blood flowing. It forced me to start breathing deeper again, which is an essential tool in stress and anxiety management. There was no more of

the mind set "I have to do so many reps, at x amount of weight for x amount of time" but rather just going with the natural flow of what my body would allow.

With my exploration of yoga I started to practice meditation more, becoming more in tune of what my mind was doing and how it was effecting me. For someone who used to function at 100 miles an hour, it forced me to slow down and actually breath. Every yoga practice became a journey of self discovery and I have slowly learnt to do postures I could never even have imagined like headstand and forearm stand that I would never be able to do 12 months ago.

Which styles of Yoga are you experienced in, which are your favourite styles to practice and why?

Both of my Teacher Trainings were Ashtanga Vinyasa, which has given me a strong basis to teach and practice from. I practice everything from Vinyasa to Tripsichore to Hatha to Forest and have a deep commitment to Yin, or Daoist Yoga. As an ex dancer, I appreciate the discipline of the Ashtanga system but also gain much from the freedom of (well aligned, slow) Vinyasa. The Yin practice has helped me immensely in healing emotionally and finding refuge in Dharma.

You are experienced with the Yoga Wheel, tell us more about how you like to use your Yoga Wheel, and are there any other yoga props you specialize in?

When Dharma Mitra introduced the wooden wheel in New York a few years ago I couldn’t wait to get my spine on one! I was delighted when Gila brought out the recycled eco-friendly local version (IG @gilaorayoga) and take mine along with me wherever I travel and practice. It’s great for in between weight lifting sets to keep me supple and perfect for unwinding after a long flight. I particularly like the versatility of the wheel for core strengthening and creative vinyasa sequences.

Always support your neck as you roll your spine along the wheel, eventually coming to rest your neck and upper shoulders over the wheel.

Start to walk your feet toward your wheel slowly, bringing your forearms toward the mat. You can place a folded towel over the length of the wheel if you find it hard on your spine, or thread a strap through the inside of the wheel if your shoulders are too tight for a wheel grip. Allow the wheel to support a few deep slow breaths with a fully opened chest as your shoulders unwind.

Reach your arms way back keeping the inner elbows facing each other to manoeuvre the shoulder blades into place, bend your elbows and hold onto the inner rim of the wheel keeping the elbows about shoulder width apart.

Everyone has their favourite yoga mat, which is yours and why?

I am one of those people that sparkles (sweats) within ten minutes of any activity, so I need a mat that won’t let me down, particularly in standing poses and backbends. After sampling (at great expense) every mat on the market – I came across Muki, a supplier that brings in mats made in the same factory as Prana and Lululemon, but at prices that are not crippling. The Muki Pro is usually in black which hides my lovely sweat marks but occasionally comes out in limited colours as special edition. HOW TO INCORPORATE

ESSENTIAL OILS INTO YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE

Essential oils are potent, steam-distilled plant extracts, which are used for cleaning, beauty and even improving your mood. Although they’re completely natural, they’re traditionally used medicinally by aromatherapists and must be used with care. When it comes to skincare, essential oils can be used to help you achieve clear, radiant skin and prevent signs of aging. But before you start using essential oils for your skin, there are a few things you should know. Firstly, essential oils are concentrated ingredients and as such need to be diluted when using them for skincare. It’s recommended to either combine them with a carrier oil to be used directly onto your skin or add them in very small proportion in recipes. Secondly, essential oils are natural chemicals and if used incorrectly may be harmful, so you need to do your research to determine which essential oils are best for you. For example some essential oils can be harmful to medical conditions and even pregnancy; so if you’re unsure it’s best to consult with a qualified aromatherapist.

Lastly, different essential oils help with different skin problems like acne (ylang ylang) dryness (neroli), aging (rosehip) or even healing cuts (tea tree) so make sure you choose the essential oil that’s best for what you need. If you don’t want to go the DIY route of making your own essential oil skincare, you can use skincare products that incorporate essential oils, like the Victorian Garden Range of Facial Oils and Serums.

JUICE CLEANSING 101 WITH KRUNCH FRESH XPRESS

You have probably come across the term “Juice Cleansing” before: Whether it was a rave review you heard from a friend who was trying out this new trend or a not-so-great one you may have read about online. Controversial or not, juice cleansing has become the new trend in detoxing. Thinking about embarking on a juice cleanse? I recently tried out the KRUNCH 3-day Pressed Juice Cleanse. Let me enlighten you on the subject, clean any misconceptions surrounding juice cleansing and let you in on my personal experience.

TOP tip: stay on schedule with your juices. 8 – 9 juices per day may seem like a lot. Space out your juices over 12 hours, finishing your last juice roughly 2 hours before you fall asleep.

PURCHASED VERSUS HOME-MADE While I advocate home-made over shop-bought for most foods and beverages, a juice cleanse is my exception. Pressed juices purchased from Krunch make juice cleansing simple. You are not required to purchase expensive equipment and there is no mess and no left-over produce. Krunch will provide you with delicious and nutritious cold pressed juices with no added preservatives or sugar – just raw and fresh produce.

WHY COLD PRESSED? Centrifugal juicers use a fast-spinning blade to extract juice from produce, while cold-pressers use a slow pulverizer and a hydraulic press. Cold press is a process that separates the fiber from the cells of the produce, which hold all of the nutrients and live enzymes, without adding any heat.

The pulp is retained, so the juice has more fiber and protein and stays fresher longer. The cold press machine doesn’t expose the juice to air, so the “oxidation” process is eliminated. With centrifugal juicing (most of our home juicers) the blades generate heat, which destroys enzymes. The process also forces air in, starting the oxidation process, which compromise nutrients. The difference in a nutshell – you are guaranteed nutrient quality and freshness. You are likely to get more intact nutrients from cold-pressed juice.

A Krunch pressed juice cleanse is the perfect way to boost your detoxification system, flush out toxins, hydrate your cells and nourish your body.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A JUICE CLEANSE To get the best results during the Krunch pressed juice cleanse, it is recommended that for at least 3 days prior, you drink plenty of water. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, soft drinks and processed foods.

HOW LONG SHOULD I CLEANSE FOR? Celebrity fans of juice cleanses include Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Alba and Sofia Vergara to name a few.

They are known to cleanse for anywhere between 1 to 10 days. While I encourage juice cleansing, you should not attempt to juice cleanse for such lengthy periods.

Because of the restrictive nature of a juice cleanse, Krunch does not deem it appropriate as a long-term diet. Particularly the restriction of protein can affect muscle mass, and so, they recommend that you only cleanse for 1-3 days at a time. If you are cleansing for the first time, I recommend a 1 day cleanse. If you are no stranger to juice cleansing, then definitely give the 3 days cleanse a try.

WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR BODY WHEN YOU DO A JUICE CLEANSE? Krunch has found that each individual responds differently to a cleanse, and it largely depends on current diet and lifestyle factors, as well as your own biological makeup.

They have found that most people find Day 1 fairly easy, with lots of novelty and excitement about their cleanse. Day 2 can be slightly more challenging, however by Day 3 most people report feelings of increased wellness, improved energy, self-awareness and clarity of thought. This was pretty much my experience.

I will say that consuming that much liquid flushes your system out.

For those new to juice cleansing I would recommend trying the cleanse over the weekend, in the comfort of your own home.

The Krunch pressed juice cleanse left me feeling purified and energized. During the cleanse I slept peacefully, woke up feeling refreshed and my body felt light and good. I looked forward to my post ‘dinner’ calming drink, Holy Cacao, a soothing, digestive support, which was lovely when gently heated and sipped as a warming tea.

The most interesting part of the cleanse for me?

Simply craving that chewing sensation! If you plan on juice cleansing, I suggest you do so with a family member or friend; it makes it interesting having someone to share in the experience.

WILL I BE HUNGRY DURING A CLEANSE? The biggest misconception surrounding a juice cleanse is that you will be left feeling hungry. I have not found this to be true with the Krunch pressed juice cleanse. Consuming up to 9, 300ml juices every 2 hours kept me more than satisfied. Because there are plenty of bioavailable high-quality nutrients to keep you feeling satisfied on a Krunch pressed juice cleanse, you usually don’t feel hungry. In the unlikely event of feeling hungry, you can have a cup of herbal tea or snack on some raw vegetables to get you through to your next juice. My tip – stay on schedule with your juices. 8 – 9 juices per day may seem like a lot. Space out your juices over 12 hours, finishing your last juice roughly 2 hours before you fall asleep.

Skipping juices will likely leave you hungry later and may result in your blood sugar dropping. Even if you are not hungry, when it is time for your next consecutive juice, drink up!

CAN I EXERCISE DURING MY CLEANSE? With the restriction in calories and protein, only light physical activity is recommended.

Walking, stretching, gentle forms of yoga and swimming are great ways of boosting circulation. For athletes that must maintain their normal level of activity, supplementation with good quality protein may be necessary. I limited myself to only yoga during my juice cleanse. I found my energy levels changed and so I paid attention to what my body wanted.
