Closure of Vaughan Road Academy could make things worse DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com It took Melissa Castanheira nearly half a year to find a child care centre that would take her two boys in the Oakwood-Vaughan area and she’s one of the lucky ones. "It was really lucky," the mom of a one- and threeyear-old said. "I’ve been seeing moms that since they were three months pregnant they apply for a spot and the kids are already one and a half and they still don’t have a spot. I hear a lot of those stories." Castanheira, who works as a doula, and her husband started their search for licensed child care when she was eight months pregnant with their second child, Tiago. Every place was full at the time. The Vaughan Road Infant and Toddler Centre, which is walking distance to her home, opened up a spot for her infant a few months after she gave birth. When Tiago was four months old, a toddler attending Vaughan Road relocated, which opened up a spot for her oldest son, Pedro, so she enrolled both kids. The centre accepts children ages zero to four years old. She said Vaughan Road was the only centre that accepted infants in her neighbourhood. "The only other ones that accept babies are real-

The school is slated to close at the end of the year, leaving Castanheira unsure what will happen to the daycare inside. ly far away," said Castanheira, who relies on transit. The next closest infant centre would be at Rawlinson Early Learning and Child Care Centre southwest of Oakwood Avenue and Rogers Road, if they had space available. Castanheira thanks her luck, but now she has a new fear. Vaughan Road Academy, where her children’s daycare is located, will be closing at the end of this school year. The Toronto District School Board has yet to decide whether it will keep the property, leaving the child care centre, with
its 41 child spaces, in a state of uncertainty. This is happening in an area where licensed child care is already scarce. In Ward 15, where Vaughan Road is located, families of 473 children who have been approved for a child care subsidy are still waiting for a spot, according to the City of Toronto’s Children’s Services. This number doesn’t account for children waiting for a full fee spot. The TDSB trustee for the area Jennifer Arp said she will advocate to keep the property, that way community services such as the daycare and city-run
recreation programs could continue, plus the property could be used for a school again when the child population rebounds. "I know, based on knowing the community, what it needs and what it could potentially need in the future, which is why I would like to keep it as a core holding," she said. The board will decide whether it will keep or sell the property in 2017. Arp said she has support from her neighbouring trustees to fight to keep it. Peter Frampton, executive director of the Learning Enrichment Foundation, which operates the

Vaughan Road daycare and 28 others predominantly in the former City of York, is passionate about child care. "There’s always a shortage of licensed child care spaces," he said. Across Ontario, there are enough licensed child care spaces for 20 per cent of the population. "We know there’s a massive shortage, especially of infant and toddler care. The province is about to roll out 100,000 new spaces for kids zero to four. That tells us what the shortage is." The province aims to add 100,000 child care spac-
es across Ontario over the next five years, which will double the current number. Frampton said its essential to hang on to any community infrastructure and replacing the existing child care centre could cost millions of dollars. "There are younger families moving in. They’re moving out of the condos and into the neighbourhood. It’s one of the last more-affordable neighbourhoods and it’s changing very quickly." He anticipates the Oakwood-Vaughan population will boom once the Eglinton LRT is running. He adds it’s important to keep the property for its sports field, its pool and more. Oakwood-Vaughan isn’t the only community in the city facing a shortage of child care spaces either. According to the City of Toronto’s Licensed Child Care Demand and Affordability Study, presented in October, there are 47,000 licensed spots for children ages zero to five across the city, while the demand is for 51,000. Demand would be higher if subsidies were more readily available. The same study said if child care costs were capped at $20 per day per child, the demand for spaces for children aged zero to five would rise to nearly 87,000, or 52 per cent of the zero to five population in Toronto. For parents like Castanheira, potentially having to find replacement accommodations for her younger son is worrisome. Her oldest son will start kindergarten next year. "I’m just really worried because there are no spots available for a one year old anywhere," she said.

ABOUT US
Don’t ruin your life, or the lives of others, by driving drunk The holidays are a time of year for family gatherings, evenings out with friends and reminiscing about the year that was, and looking ahead to what might come. With every story shared of dreams fulfilled, or those that remained just out of reach, alcohol may be a regular companion at the table. Catching up over a bottle of wine isn’t uncommon during the holidays, but what shouldn’t become common is getting behind the wheel after an evening of drinking - now, or at any time of year. MADD Canada reports that accidents involving alcohol and/or drugs are the leading criminal cause of death in Canada. Its website reports that in 2012, there were 2,546 crash deaths. Of those, 1,497 involved drivers who had some alcohol or drug presence in their system. That works out to almost 60 per cent of people who knowingly turned the key in the ignition after consuming alcohol or drugs. But that doesn’t have to be the case. There is enough education and awareness about the dangers of drunk or drugged driving that there’s no excuse to get behind the wheel impaired. The human cost is staggering; innocent people’s lives changed in an instant, without their consent. The financial cost to all parties involved can be catastrophic; draining their savings and in some cases, losing their homes because of court costs or stacking medical bills. The Toronto Police Service, along with 16 other police services across the province, launched its annual holiday R.I.D.E. campaign last month. Toronto police are out every night until after the new year holding spot checks at various locations across the city – working to keep you safe. But drivers have a responsibility. Pay for the long cab ride, take Uber, arrange for a designated driver or call someone you trust to pick you up. Making arrangements to enjoy yourself, but not taking the unnecessary risk of getting in the driver’s seat impaired, is the best gift you can give yourself this holiday season. If you’re heading out to celebrate the start of 2017, Corby Spirit and Wine is partnering with the TTC to offer complimentary rides home for revelers. There are options everywhere. No good time is worth driving impaired.

Industrial buildings tempt the faithful, despite city crackdown Toronto is a place of religious freedom, but isn’t a friendly place for religious groups which lack a lot of patience and money. If you want to start a church, mosque, or temple, and you don’t want to rent space in another religious institution, your options are limited. Building a place of worship takes plenty of time and cash. If you don’t have that, you’re more likely to do something foolish, such as moving into an old warehouse or factory. On a stretch of Birchmount Road in Scarborough, the city shut down a Hindu temple last month. The Canada Kanthaswamy Temple Society held services in a warehouse for years, temporarily, while its home on the same street
MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto is being rebuilt. The Sakinah Centre opened a mosque and private school in an industrial building two doors away from that warehouse. More than 100 children attended the school before it suddenly shut down, and the mosque with it, in January. Both buildings were served with orders branding them "unsafe" - both lacked fire safety systems required for places of wor-

ship and schools - but the city also acted because they were in an employment area it wants to save. Michael Thompson, chairperson of Toronto’s Economic Development Committee, says the city is not picking on any religious groups, but Sakinah and Canada Kanthaswamy both ignored the city’s warnings about improper zoning. "A lot of folks are just not wanting to follow the rules." Part of the problem is this industrial part of Birchmount is already dotted with places of worship and private schools, as are many employment zones across the city. Seeking to stop a trend, the city clamped down in 2013 with a new bylaw,
though it seems it sometimes takes inspectors years to find and act against new places of worship existing where they shouldn’t. To leaders of religious institutions struggling to find an affordable building - and who perhaps received bad advice - this must look awfully unfair, and empty industrial real estate awfully tempting. But what about those believers who scraped together the donations, the money for lessons? Where can they go now? Edges of Toronto is a column about how people see life in Toronto differently, depending on where they live. Reach Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

AARON D’ANDREA adandrea@metroland.com Students at York Memorial Collegiate Institute got together this month to help new Syrian immigrants adjust to Canadian life a little easier. Grade nine and 12 students organized, packed and decorated welcome boxes of basic food and household supplies for new Syrian refugees. Furthermore, the students, the majority of whom come from immigrant families or are immigrants themselves, wrote welcome letters in which they related some of their own experiences on adjusting to new life. "My parents came to Canada from Somalia in the early 1990s," Ijaabo Mohamed, 17, told Metroland Media Toronto. "There was civil war going on. There was a guy... he was kind of a dictator and was ruining farmlands and killing peo-

Mohamed’s parents soon left the country and came to Canada, where she was born, and she feels honoured to share advice with people in a similar situation to that of her parents. "I see what’s happening in Syria and everything, and as soon as I heard that we had this project coming up, I got really excited, not to send them the food, but I feel it’s more important to send them your thoughts and prayers, and share your story so they have

something to hold on to," she said. The students’ teacher, Heather Birrell, created the project after watching a documentary film, Clouds over Sidra, which tells the story about a 12-year-old girl living in a refugee camp in Jordan. The movie was filmed with 360-degree technology, which really grasped the students’ attention, Birrell said. "They got to see what life was like inside that refugee camp through her eyes," she said, adding the class

became interested in helping refugees. "I asked the people at the Sidra Project what was manageable, and they said people living here need a start up," she said. "So basic food and basic toiletries." Even though the project wasn’t going to be marked, the students got together and worked in groups to create their boxes and
write their letters. "I was so moved and I was so choked up," Birrell said about how she felt when she read the letters. "It was really quite real to them and the advice they gave was really authentic." The packages, which were shipped out on Tuesday, Dec. 20, will be delivered to Dubarah, an organization that helps to link
Syrian immigrants with support and resources. Grade 12 student Manas Thaker, 17, whose parents came to Canada from India when he was three, wrote in his letter where to find facilities such as libraries and community centres that could help them learn Canadian culture. "Canada is an accepting place," he said.

‘I spent my first Christmas in Canada in a shelter’
FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Loved ones arrive inside a home decorated with all the trimmings for Christmas, sharing hugs and laughter while the aroma of turkey and apple pie fill the air. They’ll exchange banter and gifts, and leave with full stomachs and hearts. But while that might be reality for some, for others it’s a time of spending the holidays surrounded by strangers in a homeless shelter, with nothing more than the clothes on their backs and no friends or family to visit. Nicola Simpson was in
Canada less than two months when she found herself in a shelter in late 2010. She began to experience extreme violence at age 16 in her home country of Jamaica and was attacked physically and emotionally because residents of her small community rightly suspected she was a lesbian, she said. "At age 16 most have their second or third child," said the Bathurst Street and Wilson Avenue resident. "At 16 and not being pregnant in a small community, I stood out. I felt the need to date men to be seen in public so people would stop talking." After striking up a conversation with a Canadian tourist in 2008, Simpson decided to marry him shortly afterwards because "I was willing to do the straight thing for a while, or try. It was a choice between my mental health or my life." Marriage worked out well for the first two years

Nicola Simpson, who spent time in North York Women’s Shelter during Christmas a few years ago, is encouraging people to be more sensitive to others during the holidays. because Simpson would only see her husband once a year when he visited and could avoid intimacy by blaming ’that time of the

month’. But after she was accused of causing her mother’s stroke and ultimate death due to "stress from my sexual orientation" and beaten at the hands of supposed loved ones, Simpson fled underground and came to Canada to live with her husband in November 2010 out of "desperation," she said. After weeks of avoiding
intimacy, Simpson packed her bags and headed to a shelter after she said her husband hit her, and took her passport and money. "I spent my first Christmas in Canada in a shelter," she said. Without having anywhere to go and not knowing a soul, she soon left that shelter for North York Women’s Shelter (NYWS), where she stayed for about a year. "I can look back and it’s been quite an amazing journey for me," Simpson said, adding NYWS provided her with lawyers to settle family and immigration matters. Her refugee application was granted, as was her divorce, and she now resides in a Toronto Community Housing building with goals of becoming an immigration lawyer as her way of giving back. With Christmas days away, the 37 year old said her hope for the holidays is for people to be a little kinder to one another this time of year. "The first night I was in the shelter, I was upset, I was frustrated, I was confused," she said. "I had so many questions. What am I doing here? How did this happen?"

She credits NYWS staff for creating a welcoming environment, where even the simplest of words can have a huge impact. Residents would wake up Christmas morning to piles of presents from donors such as pyjamas and toiletries, and other things they would need when moving out on their own, she said. She recalled being fearful she would be kicked out of NYWS if she revealed her sexual orientation, but came out to a social worker anyway. "She hugged me," Simpson said. "I was not expecting that. I was not aware how accepting (Canadians) were. I’m able to identify without fear." Mohini Datta-Ray, executive director for NYWS, a 30-bed emergency shelter for women and children, said while Christmas might be a time to get together with relatives, for a lot of people family is an unsafe option. "We try to make sure we acknowledge holidays celebrated by those in our shelter," she said. For Christmas this year, all residents received vouchers to have photos taken with Santa at Yorkdale Shopping Centre, everyone pitched in with tree decorating, and each resident will be treated to an offsite buffet lunch, she said. "It’s not an easy thing to be away from your network," Datta-Ray said. "We try to make sure it feels like home."

Kids Help Phone sees spike in calls over holidays derful time of year for many as we spend time celebrating with friends and family. But for those young people who’ve had a hard year, or have a challenging home life, this time of year can feel especially difficult, even overwhelming," said Jennifer Murdoch, association vice-present of counselling operations at Kids Help Phone, in a news release.
