"I like everything. I like the exercises," Wolfe said. "I like dancing. I like the music. It’s fun."

ESS offers adult day programs for cognitively impaired seniors, most with dementia and in their 80s, some with mobility issues, four days a week at its Alderwood location: two coed, one women, one men. On Thursdays, people with Acquired Brain Injury attend the program.

Across Canada, an estimated 564,000 people live with dementia.

Shining the spotlight on the stories that matter In a city as large, diverse and ever-moving as Toronto, covering the news can often feel like a drop in a bucket. There’s so much happening here, and it’s a city full of strong communities that often carry their own unique identity. In the Metroland Media Toronto newsroom, we do our best to represent the communities we serve online and in print. Admittedly, we can’t do it all or be everywhere we’d like to be.

That said, we’re still going to do our best to make an impact.

So beginning this year we’re renewing our focus continuing to report on local news and events, city hall, crime and transit issues but we’re also introducing several new beats.

We’re looking to find stories on topics that matter or are of interest to our audience. Topics that, in many cases, we really haven’t focused on before. Parenting, history, technology, health and schools were key selections we felt deserving of more attention.

Considering how many struggle with the cost of living in the city, we’ve also dedicated a reporter to a ’Money Matters’ beat to help break down financial issues. Debt loads can be crippling and it’s shocking how many people lack the financial literacy to be able to manage it. How secure is our money in this digital age? These are areas we hope to explore. ’The Diverse City’ will aim to give voice to minority groups, indigenous people and the LGBTQ community, and investigate issues relating to how we’re all different - our successes in embracing that and the challenges that exist where it fails. All timely subjects for discussion considering the malcontent kicked up south of the border after president-elect Donald Trump’s win. How this affects us as Canadians remains to be seen, but we’ll be watching.

Another area of the city we want to spotlight is what we’re calling ’The Other Toronto’. These are the pockets of population, much of it concentrated in the city’s suburbs, that are home to immigrant communities and working-class families. Often isolated and struggling with challenges like neighbourhood crime and poor education rates, these Torontonians deserve our attention. What stories of success, resilience and identity are happening in our backyards? What needs to happen to improve the lives of our neighbours?

Mike Adler’s column today explains more. We want to be there for these people and tell their stories on a regular basis in the hopes it may make a difference down the line.

Going in search of The Other Toronto in 2017 There is more than one Toronto.

More than a decade ago, the city, United Way, and the province saw poverty deepening around the edges of our freshly-amalgamated home.

University of Toronto Professor David Hulchanski, in his The Three Cities Within Toronto, makes plain how fast the city has divided since the 1970s into an ever-wealthier centre and waterfront, and other places where incomes consistently dropped.

The city chose nine "’hot spots’ of high need and low infrastructure" in 2005, then bumped that up to 13 "priority neighbourhoods".

It pledged people in these neighbourhoods would get money, community hubs and help organizing themselves.

Recalculating, it started calling its highest-needs districts Neighbourhood Improvement Areas because that sounded better, and today 31, out of 140 census neighbourhoods, are NIAs. and Jamestown, and to the south a string of other NIAs through what was once the City of York.

Go east, and Thorncliffe Park meets Flemingdon Park and Victoria Village in another corner of North York; below that, the former East York’s Crescent Town touches Oakridge across Victoria Park Avenue in Scarborough, where seven other NIAs clump together south of Highway 401.

This happened to those neighbourhoods because industries left and a new wave of development never came.

The apartments got older, the traffic crawled, people in the houses aged, subways weren’t built and MoneyMarts thrived.

They became part of The Other Toronto.

Most often, most of us see

that second Toronto through a car window or on the news, in buildings glimpsed after a shooting, or roads after a pedestrian dies running for a bus.

But what happens in The Other Toronto should interest us as much as what happens on Queen Street or in Rosedale. It’s in this Toronto’s neighbourhoods where people on modest incomes can still afford to live.

We need to hear from people in these neighbourhoods, and in 2017, I’m going to do my best to talk to them about the city they live in.

MP Ahmed Hussen wants to hear from young people Applicants can apply throughout January DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@thetopic.ca York South-Weston Liberal MP Ahmed Hussen wants to hear from his young constituents and as such is launching a youth council for his community.

The youth council is open to people between the ages of 14 and 30 and will meet several times a year.

Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government is making a big push to heazr from young people, and Hussen said it’s important for people like himself to bring the youth voice to Ottawa.

"Reaching out to the youth is important," he said. "Like all other citizens, their issues deserve

to be heard and their interests deserve to be protected. Out of democratic principle, I think we have to include young people’s issues in our agenda and I think there is a particular responsibility for someone like myself to make sure that happens."

Hussen said he wants young people to have direct access to him. The youth council, which he says will be non-partisan, won’t be the only way to engage with him, but it will be a consistent and regular forum to exchange ideas and to discuss issues in the community.

"I don’t think we have enough venues and forums for young people to bring forth ideas and then for those ideas to move forward or at least have the chance to move forward," he said.

"I want to be able to get a sense of what the issues are for young people in my riding. The youth council is

one way to do that."

York South-Weston, like much of northwestern Toronto, is an area with a large population living in poverty. He said having a youth council can be helpful in finding solutions to alleviate problems for young people.

As one example, Hussen said the youth council could help come up with ideas on how to improve the Canada Summer Jobs program in the community.

Canada Summer Jobs has doubled the number of summer positions since the Liberals formed government, and York SouthWeston and several surrounding ridings got additional funding to the additional funding, providing summer employment to many more young people this past summer than would otherwise get jobs.

He said the local youth council could come up with ways on how to improve the

Hussen intends to continue reaching out to the youth in his community who are at-risk and less likely to join his youth council by continuing to knock on doors and listening to their issues.

"I try to squeeze in as much canvassing time as possible, for no other reason than to stay in touch with residents, and that includes young people."

Hussen hopes the youth council will start meeting in early 2017.

He’s accepting applications until mid to late January. A venue has not yet been chosen for meetings, but Hussen said it will be in an easily accessible area.

Young people from York-South Weston met for the first time at a Keele Street community hub on Dec. 20, where the For Youth Initiative launched a youth-led network of local project leaders helping their respective neighborhoods.

Now, she is encouraging other young people coming forward with their own community projects in York South-Weston not to give up their own visions.

"I know how hard it is to be a young leader to do things by yourself. You might not be recognized for it, but keep doing it," Sahlu said at the Dec. 20 launch of a new group backed by the For Youth Initiative agency on Keele Street.

"There’s lives you are changing, there’s youth you are changing."

Sahlu got training and support from FYI: now she wants to use her skills to help young people "who have so much passion for

their community".

They include Ubah Idle, founder of #SaveOurSomaliYouth, a social platform formed last February to bridge a generational gap in the city’s Somali community, and talk about issues Idle said its older generation doesn’t want to discuss.

Riley Peterson, a Vaughan Road Academy student who started a program to get girls at Charles E. Webster Junior Public School ready for high school, also belongs to the Youth-Led Initiative Network starting monthly meetings in a new community hub at 1652 Keele.

Another member, Debbie Dada, started Find Youth Path, a group "trying to close the gap in student achievement" in the area, where Dada said a lot of young people in school "don’t give their all to it."

Path held an event for middle and high school students with speakers including electricians, pharmacists and lawyers. "We wanted to give them the confidence to aim high," said Dada.

Raynette Lewis formed an Afro-Carib Club this year at Forest Hill Collegiate, where the school’s black kids, she said, can "just talk and be themselves".

FYI wants more young people ages 15 to 29 to join the network, and offers mentoring, bus tokens and support in funding their projects.

The agency shares the building beside George Harvey Collegiate with the York South-Weston’s Community Action Resource Centre (the CARC), Woman Abuse Council of Toronto (Woman ACT) and the York Hispanic Centre.

Gun homicides in Toronto were up by half in 2016, and even as they continue their work, leaders of two anti-gun-violence campaigns say they don’t think 2017 will be easier.

"I can’t honestly say I’m hopeful," Roderick Brereton, co-founder of Just Think 1st, said recently.

Faysal Mohamed Hees, shot in his North Etobicoke apartment building, became Toronto’s 68th homicide of 2016 in December, a few days after Mayor John Tory asked Canada’s Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale to address a "troubling rise in gun violence that is taking lives and devastating families."

Brereton’s group produced six public service announcements this year to spread its message that young people ought to consider consequences before they resort to violence.

"Your life is never the same" after you pull a trigger, Brereton told Metroland Media Toronto.

"Sleeping isn’t easy."

Just Think 1st tries to hammer home that there are other ways to resolve conflict, but Brereton believes Toronto’s surge in violence won’t vanish soon: there are too many unemployed and angry people out there, he said.

Toronto Police said they seized 2,045 firearms in 2015.

Tory’s letter to Goodale says half the guns on Toronto’s streets are smuggled in from the U.S., but the other half are stolen from legal owners or sold on the black market.

There is no limit to the guns one licensed owner can have, noted the mayor, calling that "an obvious gap that needs to be addressed."

Tory also asked Goodale for "some sort of tracking" on sales of long guns, which he said were "increasingly used by the criminal element."

Louis March, founder of the Zero Gun Violence Movement, agreed the gun supply has increased, and must be addressed.

But he is unimpressed with Tory’s latest effort - a letter in the midst of "a crisis" - and argued it shows politicians aren’t ready to deal seriously with gun violence.

Making a real difference requires addressing its

"seed causes," all the things "we did not do yesterday," March added this week.

We need to investigate whether programs aimed at "volatile" youth are effective, and to recruit people willing to do anti-violence work outside the normal workday, said March.

"Youth are asking for help. They just don’t know where to go," he said.

"Who’s going to hire them?

What do you think they’re going to do (if no one does)?"

Lack of gainful employment "is a huge reason why people are pulling the trigger," said Brereton. "The streets are often the only places they can resort to."

He suggested changing the education system - in which black males, disproportionately, haven’t done well - is important for the long run.

Most people who have injured or killed people never finished high school, Brereton said, adding: "I was told I needed to go to vocational school.

So did a majority of my friends that happened to share the same skin colour."

Both he and March also said shootings in Toronto are becoming normalized.

Years ago, one would be big news, Brereton said. "Now, it makes the news for one day."

"We try to create a natural environment that is non-medical, noninstitutional to address the needs of clients’ spirit, mind and body. We look at best practices and apply it to our therapy program," Catherine Grenaway, ESS’s director of client services, said of its adult day programs, which offers individual care plans.

"It allows caregivers to run to the doctor’s, get groceries done, the simple tasks we all take for granted that can be near impossible to do (when caring for someone with dementia)."

portservices.ca or call 416243-0127. ESS or the Community Care Access Centre performs client assessments.

The fee is $24 a day. Fee reductions may be available based on income assessments. Donors also help defer some clients’ program fees.

"Fees are no barrier to service," Grenaway said Clients’ personal care needs, including medication assistance, are offered along with breakfast, lunch and two snacks, gentle exercises, socialization, activities, story reading, and music therapy.

This day, the program focused on music therapy.

Business executive Kevin Jameson, founder, president and chair of the Dementia Society of America, flew in from Doylestown, PA to meet the women and see ESS’s music therapy at work.

Jameson said. "Music uses different parts of the brain to help people with cognitive reserve.

"It’s no different than going to a country where you don’t speak the language and trying to figure it out. The language of people with dementia may be impaired, but there are other kinds of language, like music, touch, smiles."

The Alzheimer’s Association in the U.S. estimates more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. One in three American seniors will die with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, it states.

Perhaps the most-startling static: every 66 seconds, someone in the U.S. develops Alzheimer’s, the association states.

Rather than shock Jameson, the statistics spur him to action to help more people with dementia and their families.

She was a founding member of the Political Equality League in her home province of Manitoba. The tide began to turn in their favour when, in 1914, McClung helped organized a mock parliament debating the dangers of giving men the right to vote. In 1916, Manitoba was the first province to give women the vote, followed soon after by Saskatchewan.

Margaret Laura Margaret, long time resident of Winterset Crescent, Etobicoke, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 26, 2016 in Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. She was 93 years old. Born on September 18, 1923 in Westbury-onTrym, Bristol, England, Margaret was the eldest daughter of William St. Clair Milton and Mildred Daisy Milton (nee Bill). Margaret is survived by her four children and nine grandchildren; eldest son, Nicholas David Coleman of Richmond Hill, his wife Julie and children Stephanie (Anthony Lazos), Melissa and Nicholas; Second son Richard John St. Clair Coleman of White Lake, his wife Beth and children Lindsay (Joel Semenchuk) and Mitchell; eldest daughter Jill Margaret Coleman of Toronto, her husband Brian Bawden and children Drew and Andrea; youngest child Teresa Elizabeth Laura Reid of White Rock, BC, her husband Stephen and children Matthew and Brooke.

Margaret is survived by her younger sister, Frances Baker of Derbyshire, England and was predeceased by her brother John Milton of Devon, England.

Margaret grew up in London, England and lived through the air raids of WW II. She always had a “torchâ€? (ashlight) on hand just in case the lights went out. In 1948, she married David Kenneth Coleman (deceased). Margaret and David were blessed with the birth of three children in England and the family was completed with the birth of their fourth child in Toronto. In 1959, the family moved to Canada making Etobicoke their new home. Margaret worked at the Toronto Public Library for many years and was referred to as “the voice of Richview Library.â€? One of the many gifts she bestowed on her children was the love of reading. An avid gardener, Margaret found great pleasure in tending her ower beds and enjoying the shade of the magniďŹ cent willow tree planted by her husband David. She enjoyed painting in water colours and left many treasures for family and friends. She was a wonderful baker and every Christmas her grandchildren looked forward to her signature sausage rolls. She was a prodigious Bridge player. In her later years, her wonderful “Bridge Ladiesâ€? provided her with more than just card playing, visiting often to lend companionship and support. Margaret had many friends, including her lifelong, dear friend Margaret Parker of Etobicoke.

Margaret was always independent and active. On her 90th birthday she impressed everyone by driving her car to visit the hairdresser and purchase a bottle of sherry, her beverage of choice, enjoyed best in a crystal glass with a bit of Stilton cheese.

As Margaret requested, private cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held in Etobicoke in August 2017.
