Mike Mattos is the president of the Mount Dennis Community Association. The MDCA has partnered with the Toronto Region Conservation Authority and Eco-Neighbourhoods Project in the hope of making Mount Dennis Toronto’s first eco-neighbourhood.
DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com With a Mount Dennis population projected to boom, Toronto officials hope the growth can
happen without an increase in the community’s carbon footprint. "The plan is we will use the same amount of electricity and service more people and more
businesses," Mount Dennis Community Association (MDCA) president Mike Mattos said. The MDCA has been actively working toward making the community an eco neighbourhood for

& Metrolinx is building the Eglinton Crosstown, Toronto’s new 19-kilometre light rail transit (LRT) line that will run along Eglinton Avenue with a central 10 km underground section. The Crosstown will connect Mount Dennis in the west to Kennedy Road in the east, and the new service will be up to 60% faster than the bus service today. With 25 stations and stops and connections to 3 TTC subway stations, 54 local bus routes, 3 GO Transit lines and the UP Express, the Crosstown will improve travel times and change the way we move through the heart of the city.

The City of Toronto’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation division will conduct controlled burns in Toronto’s High Park and Lambton Park starting in April. The burns are part of a long-term project to protect and sustain the city’s black oak savannahs. "A prescribed burn is a deliberately set and carefully controlled fire that burns low to the ground and consumes dried leaves, small twigs and grass stems, but does not harm larger trees," the city said in a news release. The city added under ideal weather conditions, the smoke from the prescribed burns will lift and not affect surrounding neighbourhoods. "It is possible, however, that some smoke will reach residential areas near the

"Residents and visitors should anticipate some temporary road closures in High Park and reduced parking spaces at both locations. Adrian Marchuk hits stage with Angelwalk Theatre DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com

Singer-actor Adrian Marchuk is appearing in a self-created musical concert, ’Any Dream Will Do: The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber’, at the Toronto Centre for the Arts March 30 to April 1. tle and Next To Normal, has toured Ontario and much more. Trained in musical theatre at the University of Windsor, Marchuk now
teaches his craft at Sheridan College, the Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts and St. Clair College. Any Dream Will Do was
commissioned for Theatre Collingwood in 2016 and has since been picked up by other theatre groups, including Angelwalk Theatre.
The show, while a concert, is not unlike Jersey Boys. Audiences come for the music, but they get to know a lot more about the people behind the music. "People want to hear the hit songs, but by the end of the show, my hope is that people will think a little higher of Andrew Lloyd Webber and be impressed and moved by who he was and is as a person," Marchuk said. Musical direction and arrangements for the show are by Chris Tsujiuchi. The other three performers on the show are Samantha Hill who played Cosette in Les Misérables on Broadway and in Toronto, popular theatre and cabaret performer Kelly Holiff, and Matt Nethersole. Angelwalk’s next production is Everybody’s Got A Story: A Celebration of Canadian Women in Music June 15 to 17. Any Dream Will Do will be staged at 8 p.m. all three nights. Tickets cost $44. North York’s Angelwalk Theatre is back in the game after a two-year hiatus and has partnered with one of Canada’s top singing-acting talents to launch its new season. Adrian Marchuk, a 20year Toronto resident who calls the Rogers and Weston roads area home, will perform in a show he created, titled Any Dream Will Do: The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. The show will be staged in the brand-new, 574-seat Lyric Theatre inside the Toronto Centre for the Arts, 5040 Yonge St., March 30 to April 1. The concert that features four singers will perform the music of Webber and a telling of his life’s story, from birth to present. "Audiences are going to hear all of their favourite songs from all of their favourite shows," Marchuk said. "But we’re also going to give you a behind-the-
scenes and backstage look how these shows came to be, how they got written, different versions of shows that got thrown out along the way, how he met his lyricists, how he met Tim Rice and then how the two of them decided to stop working together, and how he came up with these amazing ideas that transformed theatre and musical theatre as we know it." The Toronto performer said show tunes were dead until Webber brought them back. "You weren’t hearing show tunes on the radio. And then (Jesus Christ) Superstar comes out in ’69 and it’s just a complete phenomenon." Marchuk’s career has been pretty phenomenal as well. The 39-year-old married stepdad of one was cast as Frankie Valli in the Toronto and Las Vegas productions of Jersey Boys, which he did for three years. He’s also worked on Mirvish’s Musical of Musicals, Tarragon Theatre’s Marry Me A Lit-

ABOUT US
America’s tourism loss could be our gain It comes as no surprise that Donald Trump’s travel ban - now stalled by the American judiciary, again - has resulted in a chill on prospective travel from the seven nations named in the ban. After all, Trump himself referred to it as a "Muslim ban" during his election campaign. But the chill isn’t limited to those countries. An Australian travel magazine - Traveller - recently carried the headline "Think twice about visiting America if you don’t want the Mem Fox treatment," referring to an author who has sworn she will never return to the United States after being detained and questioned on her way to a literary conference. A British survey taken in February found about 30 per cent of respondents were less likely to visit the country now that Trump is in power. And Britons make up the third largest number of foreign visitors to the U.S., after Canadians and Mexicans. British travel bookings to the U.S. are down year over year, although travel experts point out that is also related to a strong American dollar. The official marketing organization of New York, NYC & Company, says it expects 300,000 fewer international visitors in 2017, due to "travel ban related rhetoric." Tourism Economics, a U.S. firm that crunches numbers for airline and travel booking websites, projects that by the end of next year America will have lost 6.3 million visits, which translates into US$10.8 billion in spending. And Canada? Toronto’s Comfort Tours typically takes between 200 and 300 tourists to New York during March break. This year, 11 people signed up, the company owner said. Halifax travel consultant Bob Sime said in a media interview: ... what I hear from the hoteliers and car rental companies, and so forth, is that in traditional snowbird destinations, the winter destinations for Canada, you’ve got about a 13 to a 15 per cent drop in figures to date." Canada’s Girl Guides has announced it won’t travel to the U.S. Other organizations are expected to follow suit. Again, it’s not all Trump. The American dollar is a factor too, which is why more and more Canadians are finding other warm locales where their dollars go further. One country benefitting, ironically, is Mexico, so frequently a Trump target. That’s the thing. America’s tourism loss can be a gain for competing destinations. Trump’s unwelcoming America could be a welcome boost for Canadian tourism.

Marching behind the Scarborough subway Well, that’s that. Scarborough’s marching behind its subway. Next week, Mayor John Tory expects "war" - again as the subway, that express tunnel to one of the grandest shopping malls in Eastern Greater Toronto, returns to Toronto Council. There, it faces people who, on a Monday, would say it isn’t Monday, the mayor told people at a Scarborough meeting this month. Presumably, these people would call $3.35 billion too much for one subway stop. But the mayor says he can stop such quibbles, once and for all, if Scarborough helps. Which Scarborough will, because the subway has enlisted nearly every-

subway. Now, it’s behind the mayor’s "bold vision." Of course, the mayor’s vision is more than the subway. There’s SmartTrack, and also that 17-stop Eglinton East LRT line. The subway ate the LRT’s budget, sure, but the mayor says we’ll find a way, somehow, to build both. In Scarborough, he told his troops the LRT will not only go to UTSC but, "we hope, beyond" to Malvern Town Centre. Scarborough councillors Glenn De Baeremaeker and Neethan Shan say the same. The city already needs federal funds for a relief line subway, and a waterfront LRT, but who says we must choose? The first reason for the Scarborough Subway is to shave minutes off trips
downtown. The second is pride. Scarborough’s been stiffed, denied prosperity only the subway can give. Not having that tunnel to the mall, the mayor says, "keeps us from feeling like a family." The cost is huge, but who cares? It may be a boondoggle, but what isn’t? Aren’t they going to build that rail deck park downtown? Somewhere, there’s money. Politicians make promises. Those promises aren’t lies, exactly. Over time, they fade, and you forget who made them. For now, all of Scarborough’s eggs are in one basket. Reach Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

Composer of the piece and adjudicator Peter Graham said about WSB: "One of the best band sounds I’ve heard this weekend." WSB was the only Canadian band to participate in the championship and is the only Canadian band to take home the national title in the history of the competition. that were born from those efforts. The MDCA has also partnered with the TO EcoNeighbourhoods Initiative and Toronto and Region Conservation (TRCA) in its efforts. Major redevelopment
is expected in the area when the Mount Dennis transit hub opens in 2021 alongside the new Eglinton Crosstown LRT. This led EcoNeighbourhoods to select Mount Dennis for its project and the TRCA, of which Mattos is a board member, did the same.
Bad things happen when

& recycling get together.
"The Conservation Authority made the same decision, that if you are going to do a sustainable neighbourhood, Mount Dennis is the place because of everything that is happening," Mattos said. The Net Zero initiative by the city follows a Metrolinx decision to scrap the Crosstown backup gas-fired, power plant on the former Kodak lands. Keeping energy consumption from rising as the population grows will be hard, but is doable, Mattos said. "The towers, for example, are real energy hogs. They were built 50 years ago, they have poor insulation and a lot of them have electric heat. There is enormous opportunity there," he said. The buildings need retrofitting to reduce their energy consumption. The project requires buy-in from landlords. The EcoNeighbour-
hood Initiative is about more than reducing energy consumption. It’s about a holistic approach to creating a sustainable community. "If you do a project, it should improve the neighbourhood greatly, it should also reduce carbon, it should also create employment, it should also build community," Mattos said. "The whole idea of an Eco Neighbourhood project is that we will have projects that happen in Mount Dennis that are beneficial in several ways." As one example, partners in the project would train local residents to do the work for retrofits, such as installing lowflow toilets or insulation in older buildings. This would employ local people and reduce residential energy costs. By doing projects on a larger-scale, such as in
multiple-homes or in buildings, rather than home by home, it allows those who participate to take advantage of the power of scale and get the work done cheaper, which would encourage buy-in. The initiative is also seeking funding sources.
The Mount Dennis Community Association is hosting an Eco Neighbourhood meeting. The open house-style event happens at the Mount Dennis Library, 1123 Weston Rd., Monday, April 3 at 7 p.m. Hear from: • City of Toronto Community Energy Planner on the Net Zero initiative; • Metrolinx on their alternative to the gas-fired power plant; • Toronto and Region Conservation on their Sustainable Neighbourhood Action Plan; • Local politicians on how government is supporting the Eco Neighbourhood efforts in Mount Dennis.

Nominations When you throw food scraps in your Blue Bin, food residue and particles get soaked up by paper and can ruin large batches of otherwise good recyclables. In fact, last year an estimated 45,000 tonnes of organic waste and garbage was mistakenly put into recycling. Meaning a lot of ruined recyclables ended up in the City’s landfill. And that is a very bad thing indeed.

Humber River Hospital: investing in exceptional care... for a healthier community Humber River Hospital (HRH) is delighted to announce to our community that the hospital’s 2017/2018 budget has been finalized. Not only does our 2017/2018 budget place HRH in a balanced position, it does so while allowing us to make significant new investments in front line care to further enhance the exceptional care delivered every day by your hospital team! Here are some highlights: • An additional Patient Flow Coordinator in the Emergency Department seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. to help reduce wait times even further by expediting the flow of patients through the Emergency process. (This will build on great work already done in this area by the Emergency team – Humber is currently ranked number 2 in Ontario under the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s overall Pay for Results criteria). • One additional RN or RPN on each of the medical units during the busy time of day, bringing our nurse/patient ratio down to 1:4. All in all, an extra 19 full-time nursing staff positions will be created in the 2017/2018 budget for the medical units.
insidetoronto.com
• The Surgical Program will be open one additional operating room, and one additional cystoscopy suite to provide an additional 7,492 procedures in 2017/2018. To accommodate this expansion of services for our community, the Surgical Program will be adding 14 new full-time nursing staff positions.
For more information about Humber River Hospital: go to www.hrh.ca; or on Twitter - @HRHospital
11
• Our Mental Health Program will open 2 new beds in the Adult Inpatient Unit. A 9% increase in staffing will see the Program add 3 full-time and 5 parttime RNs; 1 full-time Social Worker; 1 full-time Child Youth Worker; 1 full-time Recreation Therapist; and 1 part-time Occupational Therapist, enhancing staff levels in the Adult Inpatient General Unit, the Child & Adolescent Transition Day Program and Outpatient Clinic; and the Adult Outpatient Day Program. This will accommodate more than 2,500 additional clinic visits within the Mental Health Program.
| York Guardian | Thursday, March 23, 2017
• HRH will provide 310 total joint replacement surgeries over and above the government funded volume levels, further reducing wait times in our community for this vital procedure.
• Humber’s Maternal Child Program will open four new beds on the Mother/Baby Unit and another 4 beds in the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit to accommodate an additional 500 births this year. The Program will add an additional 15 RNs, a Lactation Consultant, an Audiologist, a Dietitian and a Paediatric Occupational Therapist. • We will open several new Subspecialty Paediatric Outpatient Clinics: Endocrinology; Gastroenterology, a Paediatric Feeding Clinic; a Paediatric Orthopedic Clinic; a Well Baby Clinic; an Outpatient Lactation Support Clinic; an expanded Audiology (Infant Hearing Testing) Clinic; an expanded High-Risk Pre-natal Clinic; and Prenatal Classes. In addition to these and other 2017/2018 budget enhancements, thanks to our Managed Equipment Services strategy, Humber River will continue to see updates to selected technology through the fiscal year as we look to stay on the cutting edge of technology.

This is very good news for our hospital, our patients and community. All of this and more is possible because of the hard work of our staff, physicians and volunteers, who come every day determined to do their very best for their patients. It is because of their efforts and the support of so many members of our community, that care enhancements such as these are possible.
