Man arrested same day as Mayor Tory’s visit DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com The suspect in the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church arson incident was arrested Monday, April 17, the same day that Toronto Mayor John Tory visited the church. Tory’s visit was way to show the city’s solidarity with the Weston church community during this troubling time. "When this kind of thing happens, it cuts to the heart of a community that’s been a wonderful, contributing community in our city for decades," Mayor Tory said during his visit Monday afternoon. Marc Porlier, 43, who is known to frequent the area, was arrested around 2:30 p.m., a few hours after To-
ry’s visit. St. John the Evangelist was hit by what appears as arson on Easter Sunday. A fire was discovered inside the church just after 8 a.m. Services were cancelled that day. Security camera footage released by police shows a man, bald, dressed in dark baggy clothing and carrying two knapsacks, appearing to light an incendiary device. It appears that a window was broken and a lighted object was thrown into the church. Damage occurred in the sacristy, which sits in the front of the church next to the altar. Security camera images of the incident are very clear, captured by security cameras that were installed by the parish priest, Fr. Andrew Maderak, which Tory said has helped with the investigation. "I thank the Father for not only his tech savvyness, but also for his handyness because, he said, if it

Culture Days is seeking participation from artists Culture Days @ Toronto Public Library is back for its seventh year and participation from artists is needed. Almost 200 artists and arts and cultural organizations have presented more than 300 activities to more than 9,000 people at library branches throughout the city in the previous six years. The program was created to help artists and arts groups share their work with the public during the Culture Days, a Canadian celebration of arts and culture. Toronto Public Library is offering partnerships with artists and cultural groups who wish to be a part of Culture Days on Sept. 29 and 30. April 23 to 29 is National Volunteer Week, and Girl Guides of Canada (GGC) is encouraging millennial females to pad their resumes by volunteering with the organization. "My involvement with Girl Guides has provided me with incredible learning experiences that have built my leadership capabilities, teamwork and conflict management skills, and professionalism," Madeleine Deschenes, who at age 20 is the youngest member on GGC’s board of directors, said in a release. "Now, I’m sitting on the board where I can share my ideas and generate real, positive change for girls. There’s nothing more rewarding than witnessing first-hand how your involvement has a profound, positive impact on the lives of young
derak said he doesn’t remember the conversation, which a parishioner had reminded him of. "Sometimes it makes us reflect: is there something I could have differently, because everybody meets people every single day on the street who ask us a question
said his family has a strong connection to the church. They helped with the clean up on Sunday and came out again Monday to show their support. "I think this was a tragedy to happen to a church. But we don’t know his motives, we don’t know anything about him. I think we should just pray for him and hope he doesn’t do it to any other place, not to mention any other church," Andy said. One man, who only gave his first name, Domenic, a previous parishioner, said he recognized the suspect on TV. He said the suspect looks weird, but is not dangerous. He wears strange clothes and can be seen begging in the Weston Road and Lawrence Avenue area, he said. Parishioner Philip Black, Andy’s dad, said the congregation is saddened and disturbed by the incident. "We’re just thankful no one is hurt," he said.

in the auditorium, while the festivities will happen throughout the school, including music and food in the cafeteria. Eight musical acts are expected to perform through the day. The ceremony will also include the final induction into the school’s Honorary Hall of Fame. An event such as this would normally take 18 months to organize, but this one is happening in five months. It’s possible only because of the volunteers, as many as 25 of them, who are putting in countless hours to make it happen. "Everyone is coming together and devoting their time, their expertise, bringing their heart and soul into this," Meneguzzi Spall said. "Everyone feels very passionate about this school. free for those 13 and under. Student council president and Grade 12 student Drew Barot expects at least half the current student population to attend the event. He said students want to spend as much time as they can at the school. "They want to spend one last day in honour of the school, meet some of the alumni, meet some friends that might have graduated a couple of years ago, and it’s just a great way for us to connect with people who used to go to the school and see where they ended up," he said. The school has also played in important role in the community, he added, which is why such a large gathering is expected. "Vaughan Road has always been a community centre, it’s been a hub really. We have a daycare, we
have a pool and we have a lot of people who went here in the past. For a lot of them, Vaughan Road has been a pretty important thing in their life." Barot is the student representative on the committee organizing the farewell. For committee chair Norma Meneguzzi Spall, who attended Vaughan Road from 1966 to 70, the celebration is as much about the current students as those from the past. The farewell will include musical performances by current students, including the Vaughan Concert Band. The formal ceremony will end with a video which asks the students what they’ll miss about the school. "It’s their chance to say goodbye. We’re going to give the current students the final word," she said. The event will include decade rooms and a memorabilia room. The official ceremony will take place

ABOUT US
Community hospitals need your support Next week marks Community Hospital Week in our city – a week designated to help spread awareness of all that happens in these hospitals right in our own backyards. These health-care institutions are centres of innovation, teaching facilities and the place we go for countless health-care needs. Many of us know the emergency department well, but do you know they also offer highly specialized care? Internationally recognized programs and expert physicians and staff help put Canada’s health-care system at the front of the pack. The contributions of our community hospitals in achieving this can’t be taken for granted. That’s why Metroland Media Toronto has partnered with Humber River Hospital, North York General Hospital, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and Scarborough and Rouge Hospital to promote the special awareness week. These hospitals are there for us throughout every stage of our lives, but they need a little help from us to continue to deliver high-quality patient care. While the cost of hospital operations is funded by the Ontario government, helping to create access to some of the best health care in the world, the province asks the community to participate by supporting equipment needs and a portion of capital renovations. Many people don’t know that the government only covers a hospital’s operating expenses, leaving the costs of new medical equipment and building for the hospital to cover – and that’s where you can come in. Hospitals count on the generosity of donors to fund a whole host of things that make a difference in the individualized care provided by health-care specialists in your hospital, close to home. Your support helps with the purchase of new X-ray machines so doctors can diagnose your child’s broken arm, finance renovations to birthing suites so new moms can bring life to our communities, expanding emergency services so that they’re available when your family needs it most, and much more. Gala dinners, planned giving, golf tournaments, corporate grants, raffles, silent auctions, and individual monthly and annual gifts are just a few ways hospital foundations work with the public to raise funds to support health care in your community. It’s not easy to ask for help, but it’s easy to make a difference in the health care in your community. During this Community Hospitals Week and throughout the year, consider offering your support to your hospital.

East York pride can survive new boundaries East York is dead, yet it’s still with us. Next year will be 20 years since the province pushed six unwilling cities together, and East York – that borough on the Don River – was one. The spirit of East York hangs on, though; in sports leagues, legion halls, its historical society and garden club. The old civic centre is still there, and East York’s politicians don’t let residents forget. But now comes a new challenge: East York will take territory from North York. Ward boundaries designed to last Toronto the next four elections – Toronto council passed a bylaw establishing them last month – have "really torn apart the traditional boundaries of East York,"
MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto says Janet Davis, a councillor there for 14 years. Our 44 wards were created in 2000, when the megacity was new. But with 400,000 more Torontonians flooding into downtown and wherever else condos bloom, council opted for 47 wards. You’ll have to learn new ward numbers. The plan means more representation from down-

town, a bit more new blood. It also means East York wards north of the Danforth absorb parts of North York west of the Don Valley. Paula Fletcher, council veteran from nearby Riverdale, bluntly says the boundary plan "completely disrespects East York as a legacy city." People have communities and they’re attached to them, Fletcher adds. "I think that’s important that we honour that, not carve it up." Davis, however, says she’s trying to be positive about the change. She’ll work even harder to keep East York pride, and identity, going. That identity is strong, she insists, in a generation calling themselves East Yorkers - some trading
memorabilia online - after East York, the municipality, ceased to be. The plan’s also notable for what it doesn’t change. Etobicoke, beyond the Humber River, stays intact, though a councillor there, Justin DiCiano, is appealing the redistribution anyway. Victoria Park Avenue remains the wall beyond which Scarborough lies. An earlier option divided the Beach, merging one of its wards with southwestern Scarborough. That was enough to get residents on both sides of Victoria Park angry. In Toronto, our dead former cities are tough to kill. Reach Edges columnist Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com

Celebrating community hospitals Next week (April 24-28) is the third annual Community Hospitals Week in Toronto, highlighting the important role community hospitals have in delivering worldclass care close to home. Mayor John Tory offered his support in a statement for the week’s designation, but Metroland Media Toronto also heard from the leaders of our community hospital foundations about their role in our health care. "The breadth of experience the doctors and caregivers have is unprecedented," said Colleen Albiston, president and CEO of the Humber River Hospital Foundation. "The community hospital sees it all and prepares to respond to any medical situation that comes through our doors. This makes community hospitals the perfect place to innovate. Who better to design new
ways of delivering care than teams of people who deal with this volume and variety? They see what works and create processes, and integrate new technologies, and new thinking to keep improving the patient experience." "Community hospitals are often top of mind for emergency care, but most people are surprised to discover that they also provide highly-specialized care," said Terry Pursell, president and CEO of the North York General Foundation. "With internationally recognized programs and expert physicians and staff, North York General Hospital is revolutionizing health care in our city - right here in your own backyard." "You will get 80 per cent of all the care you will ever need locally," said Maria Dyck, president and CEO at the St. Joseph’s Health Centre
Foundation. "Community hospitals are here for you and your family at every stage in your life. Many do not realize that tax dollars do not fully fund necessary upgrades to patient spaces and most equipment. It takes all of us - neighbours helping neighbours to come together and build the best place for our families and friends to receive care." "Community hospitals play a vital role in ensuring Canadian health care is the envy of the world. But that fact is sometimes taken for granted," said Michael Mazza, president and CEO of the Scarborough and Rouge Hospital Foundation. "That’s why Community Hospitals Week serves as an excellent reminder of the importance of great health care close to home." Visit insidetoronto.com/ yourcommunityhospitals
