The group, calling itself York South-Weston At The Table, has been active since 2015 and is hosting a public event, with free food, Saturday, April 29.

The group’s goal is to connect

all the food missions (community kitchens, gardens, etc.) in Toronto’s Wards 11 and 12 to reduce food insecurity, and to help improve the community through food initiatives.

The celebration also marks the school’s 25th anniversary at its current building at 100 Emmett Ave. It happens on Saturday, May 13 at the school.

York Humber - which started as a vocational school in 1967, but now solely offers special education programs - is expecting a few hundred people to show up. It had a turnout of several hundred at its 40th anniversary, which organizers are happy with, considering that much of the school’s population doesn’t live nearby.

"Because this was a focus school, not a lot of the kids who come here are from here. There’s a lot of busing," said Ron Gonweloos, a former York Hum-

Judy Whitfield, another committee member and former York Humber teacher and vice-principal, said it’s hard to reach former students, but it’s a great chance for those who come back to reconnect.

It’s also a great opportunity for teachers to reconnect with colleagues and pupils.

"It’s important for retired staff or staff who’ve moved on to other schools, because the distance between when you’ve taught the students and now seeing them come back - seeing that they’ve been successful, that they are married and have families, they are contributing to society that is very uplifting to see them," Whitfield said.

Humber is a great school and plays an important role in its students’ lives.

"There are some for whom this is a haven. It is a destination. It is a reason to get out of bed in the morning. Like most schools, a lot of kids don’t get the full impact until they’re gone," he said.

The reunion will consist of two portions. The morning portion running from 10:30 a.m. to noon is for former and current staff only.

It costs $5 at the door and includes a light continental breakfast.

The open house open to everyone happens from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free and appetizers will be provided.

New development on Weston Road could add new sidewalks Metroland

A proposal to build two commercial buildings in the parking lot behind the Real Canadian Superstore on Weston Road received approval at this month’s meeting of Etobicoke York community council.

The application, which needs final approval from council, includes a financial institution and vehicle

service shop along with nearly 700 parking spaces.

York South-Weston Coun. Frances Nunziata said she supported the proposal, in part, because it will allow for a new sidewalk for pedestrians.

"There are two huge parking lots," Nunziata said. "Walking in from Weston Road means you’re

walking in between cars as there are no sidewalks.

Part of this application is to beautify Weston Road and to have sidewalks that should be pedestrian friendly."

Officers at Toronto’s 12 Division are telling residents to report all crimes to police, even if they seem minor, so that they can deploy their resources where they are needed.

The police spoke with residents from the Jane Street and St. Clair Avenue West neighbourhood at a meeting hosted by Coun.

The meeting was spurred by residents who complained of a rising number of thefts and thefts from parked cars.

But, Staff Sergeant Lesley Hildred told the gathering that only four thefts from autos were reported in the neighbourhood just northwest of Jane and St. Clair between Jan. 1 and March 31.

"I want to encourage everyone to report these kinds of crimes," Hildred said. "You might think

In comparison, the Weston Road and Lawrence Avenue area experiences a lot more thefts. As a result, police send plainclothes officers at night to that area.

By reporting crimes, Hildred said, police will be aware of other problem areas and dispatch officers there too.

"I don’t feel unsafe in the community, but I feel less safe since my car was broken into and stolen," said Michelle Barbosa, a five-year resident of the area. Her vehicle was stolen from in front of her home Feb. 18.

"Thank God they didn’t go further and break into

the house."

Two people were arrested, but she wonders if the two culprits could be responsible for other crimes and if police are investigating these crimes thoroughly.

Hildred told residents to be vigilant and to watch out for their neighbours. If you see something suspicious or someone trespassing, call police, she said.

One resident, Joe Portelli, said, "All of us have to take over the neighbourhood again - go out for walks . Nowadays you don’t see anybody out."

Another resident, Michelle Beattie, called it a good neighbourhood that goes through ups and downs.

"It’s a great neighbourhood. I feel safe," she said.

DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com The York Recreation Centre, a fully accessible facility at Black Creek Drive and Eglinton Avenue West, has officially opened with much fanfare this past weekend.

The centre has actually been open since February, but the official celebration was held Sunday, April 23, signalling the start of the spring recreation programming.

"This is the largest recreation centre that the City of Toronto has opened in many years and I’m so pleased to be a part of it," Mayor John Tory, who attended the official opening, said in a news release. "The community was integral to the development of this phenomenal facility that will serve as a space for residents to gather, learn and play together for many years to come."

Centre is a 6,255-squaremetre facility featuring a six-lane, 25-metre pool with ramp and seating gallery, tot pool, indoor running/ walking track, fitness studio, weight room, multipurpose rooms, kitchen and double gymnasium.

All programs running at the facility, including registered programming, are free.

The centre was packed with residents for Sunday’s ceremony, which included an open house and activities for families.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony included Mayor Tory, York South-Weston councillors Frank Di Giorgio and Frances Nunziata and MPP Laura Albanese, plus York Centre Councillor James Pasternak, chair of the Community Development and Recreation Committee.

"This is not just for the York community. It benefits the City of Toronto, North York and Etobicoke, as well, because people are going to come from all over," Nunziata told the York Guardian.

"It’s one of a kind and it’s one of the biggest that’s been built in the last 20 years."

Nunziata tried to have the community centre built prior to amalgamation when she was mayor of York. York’s recreational programming ran out of lo-

cal schools as the municipality had no recreation centre of its own.

"There wasn’t the opportunity to get the recreation services that we wanted and we needed in the City of York," she said. "We wanted a community centre where you have a pool, where you

are able to have fitness and do everything in one building. It was very important because we really lacked a lot in the former City of York."

Following amalgamation, she continued her efforts. Without a suitable city-owned spot for a centre, Nunziata pushed the province to hand over the land at Black Creek and Eglinton to the city and managed to secure it with Albanese’s support.

Once the lands were transferred to the city and funds were allocated for construction, the centre was delayed further still.

Construction started in 2012 with a planned opening in 2014. Challenging soil conditions and other problems slowed down construction with the opening day pushed back multiple times until 2017.

But the wait was worth it, Nunziata said.

Amalgamated Toronto remains a work in progress Twenty years ago this month, then-Ontario premier Mike Harris officially introduced the law that would erase the historic municipal borders in Metropolitan Toronto, and create the new city in which we live.

To say that Bill 103 was unpopular in the six former municipalities in the 416 area code would be an understatement. When it was all settled, the Progressive Conservative government found itself persona non grata in the new Megacity that they’d built. And for decades afterwards, the residents of North York, Scarborough, Etobicoke, East York, York and the old City of Toronto glared suspiciously at one another across the old borders, dreaming of better days long past.

It’s not to say that the old, preamalgamation days in Toronto were entirely perfect. There were a lot of nooks and crannies for corruption to hide and flourish in all those little councils. And the relationships between some of those little councils and the larger regional Metropolitan Toronto council led to some absurd bylaws.

But if corrupt dysfunction sometimes ruled the day well at least it was our corrupt dysfunction. Communities gathered around common values and a shared urban esthetic had their own accountable municipal governments. If they failed to hold them to account, well, it was on them. When amalgamation descended, that was lost in the Megacity of Toronto.

It’s hard to say what’s improved for Torontonians.

Amalgamation was sold as a money-saver and a way to cut the size of government. And while there were some savings identified at amalgamation, they were swallowed in the immense cost of amalgamating seven governments, and in the new cost of downloaded services like housing and transit.

Amalgamation may well have aided in cleaning up local government, but it took its time. A hotbed of corruption surrounding bad computer leasing deal was uncovered in the early years of the new city, and a public inquiry led to a suite of accountability offices in place to look over councillors’ shoulders - to often good effect.

But 20 years later, amalgamation remains a work in progress. We’re getting along better than we had in the beginning, but not all that well - witness the ongoing suburban/urban battles over subways in Scarborough and elevated highways downtown. We’re beginning to get a handle on municipal finance but we still can’t quite balance the cost of our needs with our capacity to raise revenue.

To put it another way: Toronto may be grown, but it’s not yet grown up.

Downtown businesses offer the homeless respect In downtown Toronto, on the busiest part of Canada’s busiest street, handing out tickets to homeless people doesn’t work.

But respect works.

Knowing each street person’s name works.

Mark Garner learned that. He wants us, and particularly the city’s business communities, to learn it too.

The Downtown Yonge Business Improvement Area (BIA) that Garner leads is "the front line support team" for a top tourist destination, a growing neighbourhood getting a flood of people each night.

Garner and his Clean Streets Team - half its members once lived on the street - tell newcomers at

approach them with compassion, Garner argues, and "you can then have a different conversation."

Garner, who grew up in Scarborough and walked this part of Yonge in the 1970s and 1980s, isn’t trying to gentrify it. He wants social housing, real affordable housing, to be part of every development the city okays, because homelessness isn’t just a downtown problem.

The BIA’s infographic, "One Night in Toronto," makes a point: if 5,253 people on a given night wind up in city shelters, jails, or hospitals, that costs us maybe $421,386,000 a night.

If they’re in social housing, it’s $34,512 a night.

Many street people don’t want housing. Mental illness is one reason.

One man we’ll call Howard was on the street more than 20 years, selling flags and key chains at Yonge and Dundas. Refusing housing, Garner says, was Howard’s right.

But after 18 months of work by the BIA and several agencies, plus lots of hand-holding, Howard got clean, and now makes guitars for a living.

"You can’t save everyone, but if you tackle them a case at a time, you have more of a chance," says Garner.

Imagine if Toronto’s other BIAs committed to pursuing the same plan.

Our city could change quickly.

The upcoming event will be a way for the participating agencies to meet each other, the public to learn about them, and for the community to work together to build a strategy to improve food access.

Food security has been a long-standing problem in the community, said member Jean-Marie Boutot.

When the City of Toronto established its Neighbourhood Improvement Areas, seven of which are in York South-Weston, residents said the neighbourhoods could be strengthened through better access to food.

"The more we got into it, we saw a need for this type of resource," said Spencer Phillips, of UrbanArts, who joined the group to help build the communications resource. First intended as a newsletter, it became much more. The group built an interactive online map, through financial support from the City of Toronto, which allows visitors to see what exactly is happening where.

around community food assets has always been a problem, Boutot said. At The Table continues to reach out to agencies in the neighbourhood to learn about them. It is just one of a number of projects working to build a food-friendly neighbourhood and aims to connect the dots between them all.

Food is something a community can connect around, Boutot said, and it can help reduce social isolation for some members of society.
