Site of old incinerator will be hot spot again DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com The former incinerator and later waste transfer station on Symes Road will soon be a hot spot for beers, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and more. The 1934-built, Heritage-designated Art Deco building, is set to reopen this fall with two businesses operating inside it, and its history will be preserved both inside and out, but with all the modernday conveniences clients would want. The former Destructor on Symes Road, located just northwest of Weston Road and St. Clair Avenue West, will be home to an event venue called The Symes, and to Junction Craft Brewing. The two business are tenants and are working with the landlord to bring the building, which sat unoccupied for a quarter of a century, up to

The former Symes Road Incinerator is scheduled to open as an event venue in the fall of 2017, as seen here in an artist’s rendering. today’s standards. Partners in The Symes business, Viviana Kohon, Namita Tandon-Walsh and Caitie Yue, fell in love with the building the moment they saw it. "It’s beautiful," said Kohon, who calls herself an architecture lover. "Even covered in graffiti and the
way it was, you could see the bones in that building, those round windows, the brick, the structure, you could tell that building was made and designed with love. Things are not made that way any more." The partners wanted a venue in an accessible location, such as this one,
just minutes from the St. Clair transit route, and they were lucky to find one with so much character. They’re preserving as much of the building’s history as they can. A monument with a plaque will stand outside, showcasing the building’s former use. Some pieces of
machinery will be preserved inside as well, as will the exposed beams and the style of the windows, and more. "We are keeping as much as we can," Kohon said. "We had this giant crane that we wanted to keep and put the DJ inside, but it wasn’t safe. So that’s
going to be part of the monument outside. We wanted to leave a lot more but there was stuff we had to fix because it wasn’t safe." The Symes will feature two rooms with capacities of 350 and 250 guests and a terrace for up to 250 guests. For more information, visit www.thesymes.ca

The Rockcliffe Smythe community is hoping to get new play structures at Gaffney Park. would pay for new play structures at both. It would also pay for water access at Henrietta Park, which would allow for the installation of a water bottle filling station. That water access could also turn the field into a natural ice rink in the winter, which would convert into a minisoccer pitch during the rest of the
year. At Gaffney Park, which sits along a bike path, residents hope for some outdoor exercise equipment, as well as chess tables and a heritage plaque. Both parks would also get accessible swings, improved landscaping, increased lighting and more. Nunziata, who along
with her staff, worked with residents on these projects, said community involvement is important for herself, her fellow councillors and for city staff. Without it, the city would simply address parks where standards aren’t being met. "If you want to add in a play structure, if you want to add lighting, if you want
to add all these extras that are not part of the park, then the community has to come forward and identify what they would like to see," Nunziata said. Similar park improvements have happened in her ward in the past, all thanks to community involvement, she added. Additionally, Nunziata noted, if the two projects don’t get approved for POL funding, they’ll now be on a list of community-selected projects so that when new development happens in the area, Section 37 funding can be directed toward them. The POL fund is part of the Toronto Strong Neighbourhood Strategy. Residents in Toronto’s Rockcliffe-Smythe neighbourhood have rallied behind a couple of small park improvements they say could bring neighbours closer, if they haven’t done so already. Residents are hoping for improvements to Henrietta and Gaffney parks, both of which are near St. Clair and Castleton avenues, but don’t know yet if either one will get funding. They have applied for the City of Toronto’s Partnership Opportunities Legacy (POL) funding, which has a pot of $12 million to be spent during the current council’s administration for resident-led neighbourhood improvement projects in the city’s Neighbourhood Improvement Areas. Both projects had strong community support, with approximately 40 people actively involved in determining what improvements they would
like to see, and support from local councillor Frances Nunziata. "The neighbourhood needs this," said Julie Osland, who spearheaded the Gaffney Park efforts. "Because the lot sizes are so small, nobody really has great yards to play in, a lot of houses don’t have any grass at all, which makes these public spaces even more important for a lot of people here." "There’s a lot of green space here, but a lot of the parks in this area haven’t been looked at in quite some time," said Jennifer Wellman, who spearheaded the Henrietta Park efforts. "So we want to start doing that." Both women were involved in both projects. They hope that once improvements are complete, residents will be able to hold neighbourhood events at the parks, such as movie nights or arts events. Residents are seeking $350,000 for each park. Squibb’s Stationers, an independent, family-run bookstore in Weston, is celebrating its 90th anniversary. The store calls itself the oldest textbook and general bookstore in the Greater Toronto Area, and the third oldest stationery. It was founded by Arthur and Cary Squibb in 1927. The store is holding its celebration Saturday, May 6. The event will feature special guests, including members of the founding Squibb
Unveiling of parkette planned for September AARON D’ANDREA adandrea@metroland.com Late St. Clair Gardens BIA chair Don Panos will have a parkette named after him. And city council, at its meeting April 26, unanimously voted to waive the customary two-year waiting period of renaming a property after a deceased person. "What an honour to have that," said Chris, Don’s oldest son. "I can’t say any more than that." The St. Clair Gardens Parkette, which is located near St. Clair and Prescott avenues, has close ties to Don’s legacy. Once riddled with drugs and crime, Don was instru-

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The reading will take place at 11:30 a.m. Refreshments will be served. Squibb’s is at 1974 Weston Rd. For more information, email squibbs@on.aibn. com.

"It’s important to recognize the level of contribution he made to the community." On July 12, Don, 72, died of a sudden heart attack. He came to Canada
from Macedonia when he was three years old. While here, he had four children and worked as a meat wholesaler in the early 1970s. In 1979, he opened up Don’s Wholesale Meats on St. Clair Avenue. A few years later, Don changed locations where he adopt-

Resident-led community groups in Toronto have an opportunity to receive grants of $1,000 to help them run events in their neighbourhoods. The Neighbourhood Micro Grants program is part of the city’s Strong Neighbourhood Strategy 2020 (TSNS 2020). Funds are available for programs in Toronto’s 31 neighbourhood improvement areas and eight emerging neighbourhoods. The program aims to support the delivery of local ac-
tions identified by residents and community partners involved in TSNS 2020. It’s available to resident-led groups to help them inspire their neighbourhoods with events held between August and December. In the first round of grants, up to two groups from each of the 39 neighbourhoods will be funded. The application period starts May 19. The deadline is June 9. ABOUT US
Ontario one correction away from a debt crisis The Kathleen Wynne government turned the fiscal page Thursday and introduced a balanced budget, and if you listened carefully you could hear the congratulatory backslapping from Toronto all the way to Port Severn. It was 10 years ago when Ontario ran balanced budgets in 2006 and 2007, but that gave way to $20-billion-a-year deficits in 2008 and 2009 when the economy tanked and the Grits had no choice but to hand the auto industry a $3.3 billion lifeline, or face the collapse of auto manufacturing in Ontario. At the time, then premier Dalton McGuinty made a promise to balance the budget by 2017, and while the Liberals should be commended for getting their budget in order, there’s a bogeyman lurking in the province’s balance sheet. The provincial debt for this fiscal year is expected to hit $312 billion, and in a recent meeting with Metroland Media editors, Senior Economist with RBC Robert Hogue said "tough medicine" is needed to tackle the debt. "Debt has increased quite significantly and debt to GDP is running at 40 per cent," he said. In 2016/17, the province expects to spend $11.4 billion on interest payments on that debt. That’s nearly $1 billion a month just to service existing debt, and in case you need to be reminded, that coin comes from your pocket. To put it in terms we can all relate to, every person in Ontario would need to pony up $22,000 to pay off the debt. Hogue said this massive debt leaves the province without a rainy day fund in the event the economy slows to a point requiring stimulus spending, and if interest rates rise, as expected they will, the interest payments on the debt would skyrocket. We agree with Hogue when he says it’s time the province create a plan to tackle the debt by creating a "hard target for debt to GDP ratio" that sits much lower than where we are now. However, we didn’t get that Thursday. What we did get was a desperate Liberal government waving costly carrots in voters’ faces. The Wynne government’s shopping list includes a drug plan for those under 24 costing $465 million a year and $200 million next year to increase affordable licensed child care spaces. Noble programs for sure, but not at a time when the province continues to add about $10 billion a year in new debt as long as they hold power, and if the Wynne government continues to spend like drunken sailors on shore leave - generations of Ontario residents will be buried under a mountain of debt from which they may never escape.

Toronto Tamils ready to rebuild their homeland In a Scarborough banquet hall, I realized the civil war in Sri Lanka is truly over. Greater Toronto’s Tamil people came here because of that war. They’re the largest Tamil diaspora outside Sri Lanka, and helped make Scarborough, Markham and Richmond Hill what they are today. They came from a country where they felt the majority hated them, discriminated against them, and in many cases tried to kill them. The war ended in 2009 with scenes of horror, as trapped civilians and fighters died by the thousands. Twenty business owners from our Tamil community returned to Sri Lanka in March. They came back calling on others to rebuild
MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto the island’s north and east, and to support the island’s government. During the war, people here would have called them traitors. Shaking hands with a Sri Lankan president, or with a Sri Lankan military commander as they did - was unthinkable. For many years, until the RCMP shut them down, the World Tamil Movement col-

lected in Scarborough and Markham for the Tamil Tigers and their breakaway state. Local businesses gave willingly, or unwillingly. The war was merciless. Here, thousands waved the Tiger flag at rallies or carried banners demanding a Tiger-led Tamil Eelam. No compromise seemed possible. In 2009, bombs were falling on aunts and cousins back home. Protesters in Toronto blocked the Gardiner Expressway. Afterwards, Tamils here elected a "transnational government" to keep the fight going. But Sri Lanka’s government changed in 2015. Separatist voices died away. Compromise, that most Canadian of values, has taken hold.
At their press conference, the business owners were candid. Both sides, they say, feel guilty about the war. They know it was a terrible mistake. "We, the diasporas, were the ones that helped fund the war for 35 years," adds Stan Muthulingam, the group’s co-chairperson. Certainly, justice must be done for any atrocities suffered by Tamils in Sri Lanka. But those who made the trip say reconstruction and development are needed now, and the island’s government needs investors. Eventually, war ends. Desire for revenge starts to end. People want to go home, to visit and to do business there again Reach Mike Adler at madler@insidetoronto.com
