Surfing enthusiasts take to the waves of Lake Ontario year-round

| York Guardian | Thursday, May 11, 2017

SURF’S UP! PHOTOGRAPHY BY JUSTIN GREAVES Larry Cavero could never have imaged surfing the freezing Great Lakes when he first started surfing at age seven in his home country of Peru. But after moving to Canada and discovering the possibilities, he’s opened a new door to his favourite sport. Whether it’s -20C and hailing or the wind is gusting more than 50 kilometres per hour, you can find Cavero ripping up the surf along the Toronto shoreline. Cavero is one of the main organizers leading the surfing community in Ontario. He started Surf Dreams Canada, a local surf store which organizes events like beach cleanups and other environmental awareness events. On top of connecting aspiring surfers with gear and know how, Cavero is always keeping an eye on the weather forecast for rideable waves across Ontario. Surfers use websites specific for determining the size and direction of the waves.

DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com The book business sure is different in today’s digital age, and yet in Weston an independent bookstore carries on without hesitation as it has for generations. The store, Squibb’s Stationers, is celebrating its 90th anniversary this month and is the oldest textbook and general bookstore in the Greater Toronto Area, its owners say. "I don’t like change," admits Suri Weinberg-Linsky, who inherited the store from her parents in 2001 and owns it with her husband Mike Linsky. "But you have to roll with it." While larger retailers have placed a greater emphasis on online sales, Squibb’s maintains its business model. Its main street presence invites walk-ins, orders can be placed in person, by phone or by email, and most of all

customer care comes first. But, changes have come to Squibb’s. "We’ve had to change, otherwise we wouldn’t be here," Suri said. The bookstore and stationary, which opened in 1927 and has been at its current location since 1935, has sold general books and textbooks since day one. Up until the 1990s, Squibb’s was the go-to store for books in the area and served the local schools for textbooks. Local public schools no longer buy from Squibb’s. Long before Suri’s late parents, Jack and Marilyn Weinberg, bought the store in 1980, children used to line up on the street waiting to get into the store to pick up their schoolbooks. Now, the store’s textbook sales go to parents of children attending a network of private schools in southern Ontario. The store delivers the books to the schools, buys back the

Suri Weinberg-Linsky, an owner of Squibb’s Stationers, is celebrating the store’s 90th anniversary, located in the heart of Weston. books at the end of the semester, and resells them at a reduced price the following semester. Stationary items and office supply sales have decreased, Suri said, but other items have gone up. "This is not much differ-

ent, product wise, than when Gordon (Squibb) had it, or when his parents (original owners Arthur and Cary Squibb) had it. It still has, essentially, the same product mix. The only thing we’ve added more over the years is gift items,

what we’ve taken away is office supplies," Suri said. She said the book business has ebbs and flows. At one point, the store sold a handful of Bibles; now there’s a section of religious books. "This is what people are

reading, they’re reading Bibles," Suri said. Harry Potter also continues to sell all those years after publication. The store has a greater selection of children’s books than adult books, because people are less likely to shop for children’s books online the way they do for adult books, Suri said. There’s a Black History section, Canadian books get preferred placement, and items by local artists are sold as well. Somehow, as retailers feared, eBooks haven’t killed the store. "Another book seller and I used to commiserate eBooks would put us out of business in five years. That was 10 years ago," Suri said. But, she doesn’t take anything for granted. "I think we’ve been very lucky, very fortunate, particularly over the last 20 years," she said. For more information, visit www.squibbsstationers.com

EDITORIAL | OPINION

• OUR VIEW •

ABOUT US

It’s time to celebrate our everyday heroes In a world often dominated by depressing headlines, inconsequential information and political movements that drive apart rather than bring people together, it’s refreshing to be able to take pause and celebrate something special. This year, we’ve got the Urban Hero Awards to look forward to again. And in all honesty, all the staff at Metroland Media Toronto can’t wait. The program is designed to be accessible to everyone in our city – you, your neighbour, that kid down the street who helps the elderly, teachers, social workers, volunteers – anyone can be an Urban Hero. That’s the beauty of it. It’s an awards program designed to recognized the average people in our communities who do great things, in their own way. For our readers in Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough, you’ll remember the awards program from previous years. But this time around, we’re launching with a new look, a slightly new awards process and nominations are open across the entire city. All this, in time for Canada’s 150th celebrations because we thought, what better way to celebrate what it means to be Canadian, by honouring the people that make a difference in the lives of others? Help us out by considering who you know that makes that difference. We’re looking for nominations in the categories of Arts, Business, Education, Environment, Good Neighbour, Health, Social Issues and Sports. Within each category the awards will recognize the ’Titans of Tomorrow’ (Youth 14-18), and the ’Champions of Today’ (Adults 19+). You can nominate someone today, but only until June 11. After we receive and confirm all nominations we’ll be launching an online public voting process, which will determine eight ’people’s choice’ Urban Hero winners. Another eight finalists will be selected by our staff, and the whole group celebrated at a reception later this year. Most recipients are modest about the impact they make, but it’s even more reason to give them the recognition they deserve. They may not be used to the spotlight, but what they do will no doubt serve as inspiration for others. These awards are a special opportunity to tell some really good news stories and demonstrate the strength of the good will that exists in Canada and here at home in our city. Go online to www.urbanheroes.ca to nominate someone or to learn more.

What if Toronto just gives TCHC away? Toronto Community Housing Corporation – (TCHC) – will shut 7,500 apartments in five years unless it gets $1.7 billion. And it probably won’t. Not from the city, not from Ottawa or Queen’s Park. Though Mayor John Tory says it’s reasonable, and a "moral imperative," to split that repair backlog three ways, expecting those governments to do it is a bad bet. At a TCHC highrise in Scarborough Village – newsworthy in 2015, when brick cladding on one side suddenly slid off – Tory sounded like a man convinced he’s doing all he can to fix something before chucking it into the street. True, the province’s budget is out, without new money for social housing,

MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto but it’s not too late, Tory said. City taxpayers can’t pay, Tory argued, since that will mean double-digit increases forcing seniors out of their homes. "Property taxes were never meant to fund multibillion-dollar capital projects," he said, a bit rich from the guy backing up the Scarborough subway with a dedicated tax.

Tory wants another term, and the issue risks becoming depressing for him. Should he actually secure the funds, other TCHC buildings will require repairs to stay open. It won’t end. So, here’s a prediction for a three-way split: one third of TCHC’s 58,000 units will go to charities, one third will become cooperatives, and one third will be torn down. Tory’s TCHC task force suggested sending 5,000 units to a co-op board called New Home, and 5,000 to nonprofits who already have housing. He’s sold on the idea. Big corporations – he used to run one – are "very unwieldy," he said, and breaking them up produces greater local autonomy

and accountability. Tory suggested Toronto City Council will get recommendations this month on the possible transfers. If that works, why stop? But the city owns many old and failing buildings, like the highrise Tory visited last week, which it couldn’t transfer to anyone, except the dubious property managers already running them on TCHC’s behalf. Eventually, there will be no answer except demolition. That part sounds like a huge failure for this city, with our shelters full and need ever-growing. But that’s where we’re headed. Notice of Commencement and Public Engagement Barrie Rail Corridor Expansion Transit Project Assessment Process Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario, is working to transform the way the region moves by building a fast, convenient and integrated transit network across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) and Simcoe County. Over the next ten years, Metrolinx is transforming the existing GO rail system to deliver a whole new rapid transit experience to your community. Part of this plan is to bring frequent and reliable service to communities along the Barrie rail corridor. With more frequent train service you’ll have more options to get you where you need to go. The Project Current plans include electrified, all-day, two-way service every 15 minutes to Aurora as well as peak, midday, evening and weekend GO Train service to Allandale Waterfront GO Station. The service increase will be phased in over 10 years while Metrolinx builds additional infrastructure. To support this service increase, Metrolinx is proposing the following: • Provision of a second track between Lansdowne Avenue in the City of Toronto to Allandale Waterfront GO Station in the City of Barrie; • Upgrades to existing GO Stations along the corridor: Rutherford, Maple, King City, Aurora, Newmarket, East Gwillimbury, Bradford, Barrie South and Allandale Waterfront; • Upgrades to existing structures within the corridor including bridges and culverts; and • A new train layover facility within the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury for overnight storage of trains. The Process Metrolinx is assessing the environmental impacts of the Barrie Rail Corridor Expansion (BRCE) Project in accordance with the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) as prescribed in Ontario Regulation 231/08, Transit Projects and Metrolinx Undertakings (made under the Environmental Assessment Act). As part of the TPAP, an Environmental Project Report (EPR) is being prepared and will be filed documenting any potential environmental effects and mitigation requirements of the Project. Viewing locations for the agency and public review of the EPR will be published in the Notice of Completion.

City offers cash to residents to hold events Resident-led community groups in Toronto have an opportunity to receive grants of $1,000 to help them run events in their neighbourhoods. The Neighbourhood Micro Grants program is part of the city’s Strong Neighbourhood Strategy 2020 (TSNS 2020). Funds are available for programs in Toronto’s 31 neighbourhood improvement areas and eight emerging neighbourhoods. The program aims to support the delivery of local actions identified by residents and community partners involved in TSNS 2020. It’s available to resident-led groups to help them inspire their neighbourhoods with events held between August and December. In the first round of grants, up to two groups from each of the 39 neighbourhoods will be funded. The application period starts May 19. The deadline is June 9. Adults, youths have lots to learn from each other: chair l Continued from page 1

ea has a population that is three times larger than the former area, said LaurieShawn Borzovoy, UrbanArts board chair. Last year, the organization provided programs to more than 3,200 children and youths, had a public attendance of more than 17,000, and had employed 93 artists. Borzovoy said the decision to serve more than just youths happened because of a service gap in the community for older people. It’s also a way to build a healthier community. "We’re trying to get a healthy integration between the youth and more mature individuals on a scale that just goes straight up with no preference in any area," he said. He said young and older people have a lot to learn from each other, both culturally and in terms of life experience. He said adults need to be influenced by youths. "We have people coming

in from distant lands who are not familiar with our culture, but their children are," he said. "The more they can do together, the more they will understand each other, because you’ve got two different cultures happening there, minimally, and this hopefully will bring them together in a constructive fashion. We believe that’s the holistic way to do our work." While the age reach of the organization is growing, the average age of its board of directors has dropped significantly during the AGM when 20-yearold UrbanArts program user Eugene Twien was voted onto the board. Twien said he looks forward to being on the board and always enjoys coming to UrbanArts. "The people here are cool, the environment is cool, so I always feel welcome like I could bring anybody here and they would be welcome," he said. He started participating at UrbanArts a year ago when he started attending

in its ProTech - Digital & Media Arts program, which resulted in the creation of an art collective that he’s part of. He started attending after graduating college to be a mechanic when he realized he didn’t want to fix cars. "I always had my camera, always shot around for fun, but I never actually thought of doing it for a career," he said. His Grade 12 photography teacher had always recommended UrbanArts, so he finally tried it years later, and has been coming ever since. He said the program has made him a better photographer. With the introduction of the organization’s new strategic plan called 2020 Vision, UrbanArts also revealed its new tag line, "Providing the Thread that Weaves Together Generations," which Borzovoy said reflects the organization’s new mission to serve all ages. Late St. Clair Gardens BIA chair Don Panos will have a parkette named after him. And city council, at its meeting April 26, unanimously voted to waive the customary two-year waiting period of renaming a property after a deceased person. "What an honour to have that," said Chris, Don’s oldest son. "I can’t say any more than that." The St. Clair Gardens

Parkette, which is located near St. Clair and Prescott avenues, has close ties to Don’s legacy. Once riddled with drugs and crime, Don was instrumental in cleaning up the area and the park, councillor Cesar Palacio said. "He was one of a kind," he said. "It’s important to recognize the level of contribution he made to the community." On July 12, Don, 72, died of a sudden heart attack. He came to Canada from Macedonia when he was three years old. While here,

he had four children and worked as a meat wholesaler in the early 1970s. In 1979, he opened up Don’s Wholesale Meats on St. Clair Avenue. A few years later, Don changed locations where he adopted the name Don’s Meats, selling wholesale and retail meats. In 1985, the BIA was formed, and Don was a founding member. Palacio said the official unveiling of Don Panos Parkette is being planned for the BIA’s Corn Fest in September.
