Rev. Patrick White, founder of The Chaplains Office of Canada, at a graduation ceremony and ordination service for 14 chaplains last Saturday inside Maple Grove United Church.
New lease on life spawns second career AARON D’ANDREA adandrea@metroland.com Nine years ago, doctors gave Patrick White less than two years to live. White, who was 63 at the time, had suffered three heart attacks, was diabetic and had several other serious health problems.
His doctors said he was in the final stages of heart failure. "I never drank or smoked in my life, and I was just ready to go, but also I wasn’t ready to go," the 74-year-old Weston resident told Metroland Media Toronto. "I can’t even put into words how I felt that it’s over. That’s it. I just accepted it. It became a reality,
and I mean, we have all to face death, I know that, but it did become a real reality and that was about it." With nowhere left to go and no other options remaining, he felt the desire to talk to God, so he prayed, asking for more time to live and, in return, he vowed he would serve God.
"Things started changing," he said. Slowly, he began to feel better, both physically and mentally. Once he was in better shape, White converted from Judaism to Christianity and switched careers from being a motivational

Police are working to identify second suspect AARON D’ANDREA adandrea@metroland.com Toronto police have identified a suspect wanted in connection with the murder of a Hamilton DJ in April. Leonard Pinnock, 33, was shot while sitting inside his car near Dufferin Street and Bowie Avenue, north of Eglinton Avenue West, at approximately 9:30 p.m. April 21. Emergency personnel
arrived and found him with serious injuries. He later died at the scene. Police released video footage in May showing two men approaching the parked car and opening fire. At a news conference Monday, Det. Sgt. Joyce Schertzer identified one of the suspects as 24-year-old Akil Whyte, of Toronto. His image was released. A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for his arrest. Whyte is facing a firstdegree murder charge. "I urge you (Whyte) to speak to someone you trust, hire a confident counsel and turn yourself in immediately," she said. "Every

hended." Schertzer added Whyte is also wanted for allegedly trafficking cocaine in con-
nection to Project Kronic, an investigation into the Driftwood Crips street gang which saw roughly 120 people arrested across Ontario in June. "I feel that he is extremely dangerous and I would urge those who are assisting him to contact police immediately," she said. "I do know, and I’m confident that there are those who are close to Mr. Whyte and do know where he is and I’m appealing to their better judgment." Police are working to identify the second suspect. Pinnock, a father and DJ, was waiting for a friend whom he drove to the area as a favour. Police have
called the attack unprovoked. Schertzer said Whyte was identified by a "number of things," including a "remarkable" community response. "The residents in this area were very co-operative with investigators," she added. Police are warning not to approach Whyte if spotted and to call 911 immediately. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 13 Division at 416-8081300, the homicide squad at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416222-TIPS (8477). As of September, there are 26 people waiting to begin the chaplaincy program. White said that more people are realizing there’s a need in Canadian communities for outreach
workers like chaplains. "It’s important to let people know that they don’t have to have, really, a degree to win souls or to help people," he said. "They have to have desire and compassion." White added he knows the chaplaincy will grow. "I also feel that I need some of the chaplains. I feel now that we need to look
for somebody to bring on board that can take control, because one of the worst things that can happen is you could be so busy and you can’t keep up, so it fails," he said. "We would rather take the time now to bring in more professionals that are able to do this (manage the organization). When I pass or when I leave, this ministry will
still go on and that’s my legacy." Looking back, White is happy he turned to God when he thought his luck ran out. "God kept his word," he said. "And I’ve kept mine." For more information about The Chaplains Office of Canada, visit www.thechaplainsoffice.org.

speaker to becoming a chaplain so he could do advocacy and outreach work in his community. To take his work further, six years ago he founded The Chaplains Office of Canada, where he and other chaplains that he trains from all over Canada continue to serve its clients located all across Ontario. White runs the organization with money used from his pension and enrolment fees. He also gets help from community members through fundraising. "People say you can’t be 74," he said. "I work every day from five or six in the morning to about 11 or 12 (at night), all the time." During his time as a chaplain, he said he has seen drug addicts turn their lives around, parents who’ve lost babies recover from depression and many more "miracles." "I enjoy to see lives change. I enjoy to just get out there and do the best I can, but most of all, I thank God that he’s allowing me to stay alive," he said. "I mean, I still have medical problems here every day sometimes, but the thing I
enjoy the most is to see people with their lives turning around and not from me, but through what God can do for everyone, and I mean everyone." More than 270 chaplains have studied at the organization, located at 1730 Weston Rd. near Denison Road East in Weston. They’re trained to perform various duties such as funerals for low-income families, blessings, counselling for those who have drug, alcohol, gambling and other forms of addictions, baptisms, crisis intervention, youth services, marriages and more. His organization also networks with other groups to help provide some of those services to its clients, which are of every faith. They also partner with organizations to go into communities and feed the hungry. "It doesn’t matter to us what their faith is - what matters to us is that if we can help them," he said. "It’s kind of just showing them as we believe that Jesus did good. He went out into the community and helped people, fed people and prayed, and we’re the same. We believe that all of us should have our own

vious donations to the hospital totalled $80 million. Catherine Zahn, CEO and president at CAMH, told Metroland she is excited about the new centre. "The investment that they’re making in a centre for neuroinformatics is really going to be joining an entire family of scientific infrastructure that’s going to be able to glue together that information to capitalize on the data that we have," she said. Hill is optimistic knowing his team at the centre will make progress in research of mental illnesses. "We’re going to make a very tight loop between our ability to capture data and look at health records to make predictions about which people are maybe more vulnerable and need some extra help and care to prevent things from developing further," he said.

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) has opened a new $15-million brain research centre in downtown Toronto. The Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatics is located at 250 College St., near Spadina Avenue and will house close to 35 scientists and technicians specializing in genetics, brain imaging and more to study the brain using data, artificial intelligence and other technologies. "We want to use that data, also the clinical records (of patients), to be able to analyze it to understand what are the defining characteristics of different disorders," said Dr. Sean Hill, the inaugural director of the new centre. "Right now, psychiatry typically works on symptoms and neurol-
ogy sort of works on the biology of the brain; we want to bridge those two." Hill told Metroland Media Toronto the centre, which was announced at a news conference earlier this month, will have large computer banks and a super computer, which staff will use in collaboration with various partners. "(We’ll) analyze the data, build multi-scale models of the brain and use both of those approaches to better define disorders and identify ways to treat them and their underlying mechanisms," he said, adding they could have a team of up to 90 professions over the next five years. The Krembil family have made several investments to neuroscience research in the past. In 2015, Toronto Western Research Institute was renamed the Krembil Research Institute after pre-

Legacy continues with Invictus Games The Toronto International Film Festival may have wrapped up last weekend, but Toronto has kept the red carpet rolled out with the Invictus Games about to take over. If there’s anyone that deserves the spotlight, it’s these soldiers and veterans - about 550 of them from 17 allied nations - who will take part in the event which kicks off with the opening ceremonies Saturday night. Competition takes place from Sunday through to the closing ceremonies the following Saturday night. The nations involved have all asked a lot of their armed forces. For those of us who live in a democracy, such as Canada, we have the privilege and responsibility to question our political leaders - past, present and future - whether the right decisions have been made in the deployment of our troops. What should never be up for debate is the support we must always have for those troops - the men and women we have sent, and continue to send, into harm’s way on our behalf. For Canada, that commitment includes being a part of the Global Coalition against Daesh in Iraq on the heels of a more than 12-year deployment in Afghanistan. These athletes, according to organizers, "have become ill or injured during or as a direct consequence of their service." You can bet they will try to win their events, but they have already won, in some cases hard earned battles, just by participating. Supporters are welcome to check out their efforts. There are some free events. Watch wheelchair tennis at Nathan Phillips Square, archery at Fort York, cycling in High Park, golf at St. George’s Golf and Country Club as well as the Jaguar Land Rover Driving Challenge, which is being held on a special course being built on the parking grounds adjacent to the Distillery District. Ticketed events (most at a very reasonable $25) include athletics at York University, swimming at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre in Scarborough and, at Ryerson’s Mattamy Athletic Centre (formerly Maple Leaf Gardens), indoor rowing, powerlifting, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby. Beware, some sessions have already sold out. The Invictus Games follow on the heels of this summer’s successful North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) for Indigenous youth. Both events benefited from the facilities bequeathed to us by The Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. Arguably, this is a much better use of our resources than an Olympics could ever be.

The urban heroes you don’t know about We live with heroes in Toronto, but we don’t know who they are. I met one, Martha Nyame, in Rexdale. From a village in Ghana called Abosamso, she never attended school. Her family was too poor. After emigrating to Canada, she returned to Abosamso in 1994 and saw many children that she knew faced a sad childhood like hers were uneducated. So, she changed their future. What was to be a family home became an orphanage and free school. In Toronto, Nyame worked two jobs and sent every dollar and box of supplies she could to Abosamso. "Even $5 is money," she says. More than 100 children
MIKE ADLER Edges of Toronto were housed and taught at Abosamso, even as fibromyalgia and arthritis advanced in Nyame to the point where she can’t work anymore. Last week, she made an agonized decision to close the school - only 18 orphans will remain there - and I was struck by how few people outside Abosamso knew what Nyame had done for more than 20

years. Nyame is one of Metroland Media Toronto’s Urban Heroes for 2017. On our website, you can meet other heroes we’re going to honour next month, including Nasser Rad, who couldn’t afford a car after he arrived in Canada as an Iranian refugee; now, he gives cars away to people who need a break. José Alberto Flores, vice-principal of a Catholic secondary school in Bloor West Village, buys breakfasts for students who can’t afford it, bringing the food to class. "Each student has a story," he says. Sharon Nyarko is a hero too. The University of Toronto Scarborough student, who’s been depressed, made a short film, Beyond Words, to chal-
lenge misconception around mental illness and get people talking. The needs Urban Heroes address are different, but all make the decision to do good. Sometimes it’s because of their faith, and sometimes because they recognize people around them are human beings who need help. They didn’t seek this recognition. We know them because friends nominated them, or readers voted for them online. You don’t have to be a movie star or famous athlete to change people’s lives. The heroes among us prove that. AARON D’ANDREA adandrea@metroland.com Cycling advocates in Toronto’s west end want to see the separated bike lanes on Bloor Street West kept and extended into their neighbourhoods and beyond. With a final report and a decision on the fate of the year-long pilot project, which runs from Shaw Street to Avenue Road, expected to be made before the year’s end, Helen Qu thinks an extension to Islington Avenue in Etobicoke would make sense. "As a cyclist, I find that if I have a safe space to bike in, I will more likely stop at the businesses and shop at the businesses versus completely avoiding that stretch (west of Shaw) at all," said the 29year-old Sunnyside resident. "There’s also many schools and libraries on that section of Bloor as well, so it would be a really
good opportunity for our school kids to be able to cycle to their schools." Qu avoids that stretch of Bloor
a door at any time and you can get hit," she said, adding she’s also worried about the speed at which cars travel.

Robert Zaichkowski, 30, told Metroland Media Toronto he was involved in a collision with a car near Dovercourt Road a few months ago. "I know if the bike lane was there, the driver would have been encouraged to be more careful because the bike lanes give drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians a sense of predictability," the Parkdale resident said. Data collected by city staff shortly after the bike lanes were installed in August 2016 showed the amount of cyclists increased to 4,500 per day from 3,300 per day, with 25 per cent of that increase coming from new cyclists. Also, cars travelling along Bloor decreased to 20,000 per day from 24,500 per day, but travel times increased from Bay Street to Ossington Avenue by an average of four minutes in the morning and around eight minutes in the afternoon. Furthermore, in staff’s latest report issued in June, residents surveyed within the study area showed support for the bike lanes. Zaichkowski thinks an extension near Dundas Street West is urgently needed. "Between Ossington and Lansdowne, there is no east or west cycling route," he said. "But personally, I’d like to see the Bloor bike lanes extend all the way to Kipling." Little Portugal resident Hyedie Hashimoto, 39, said staff should not only extend the bike lanes, but also extend the study itself. "Taking studies within a few months or just a year after the Bloor Street bike lanes have been installed and deciding whether or not to keep them is kind of premature," she said. "It would be nice if they could do studies that are maybe two or three years in, so people are used to the idea that there are bike lanes there and get used to the idea of taking a slight detour of their regular routes to be able to bike on a major arterial road."
Cycling advocates Robert Zaichkowski, (right) Hyedie Hashimoto and Helen Qu want to see the Bloor Bike Lane Pilot Project extended into their neighbourhoods Thursday, Sept 14. Councillors are expected to make a decision on the bike lanes by the end of 2017. Dan Pearce/Metroland

The Yonge and St. Clair area is set to get a bit more high-profile with the opening of a pop-up store celebrating the neighbourhood and raising funds for cancer research. Toronto graphic artist Lucas Young will print shirts of his own design on the spot for customers, with some of the designs reflecting the neighbourhood with images and slogans that showcase the area and others that are more abstract, such as a raccoon riding a bicycle. Young was inspired by spending countless hours peoplewatching in the area. "You take cues from the transit, the architecture, the history and the lifestyle of the area," he said. Buying a shirt gives area residents a chance to do more than just show off their neighbourhood pride, as the aptly-named Yonge + St. Clair Store will donate a quarter of the proceeds to the Canadian Cancer Society. The pop-up is being facilitated by Slate Asset Management, which is leading a revitalization of the busy corner. Last year, Slate commissioned a massive mural on St. Clair Avenue East to help bring more colour to the long-overlooked Toronto hub. The store will be located at 1470 Yonge Street and will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays from Sept. 21 to 30.

Toronto Pearson:
International Noise Benchmarking and Best Practices Report Launch
NEW LOCATION:
Join us on September 27, 2017 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Toronto Congress Centre, 650 Dixon Road, Etobicoke, ON, M9W 1J1
for our Community Environment & Noise Advisory Committee (CENAC) meeting for the release of our Noise Management Program Benchmarking and Best Practices Study. What is CENAC?
Why is this important?
CENAC is a forum for discussion between the community and the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) on matters relating to aircraft noise and the environmentally responsible operation of Toronto Pearson International Airport.
Toronto Pearson serves Canada’s largest and fastest-growing metropolitan area. The GTAA is committed to managing and reducing the impact of our operations and is reviewing a range of ambitious targets and actions to reduce the impact on GTA residents. Our updated five-year Noise Management Action Plan will be released this winter following a year of detailed study and consultations. Understanding international best practices is an important step in the development of this plan.
What can you expect to learn? In 2016, the GTAA hired UK aviation consultant Helios to undertake a Noise Management Program Benchmarking and Best Practices study. The study looked at 11 areas of noise management at 26 comparator airports around the world to identify potential new programs to be adopted at Toronto Pearson. This is the release of the report’s findings. There will be opportunities to speak with experts, including Toronto Pearson staff. This meeting is not focused on decisions around runway usage.
How do I RSVP? Visit www.torontopearson.com/noisemanagement to register and to learn more about CENAC and the GTAA’s important noise consultations and studies.
