Yan, who said he’s received calls from California and the United Kingdom about Project Get Reel, said it’s a simple solution to a wide-spread problem.

And since the location will be at LEF, which offers employment services, skills training, language training, childcare services, supports for children and families, newcomer services, youth programs and community enterprises programs, Yan believes Project Get Reel employees can access the help they need while earning an income.

Yan, who was part of socio-economic project Klink Coffee that employed people getting out of prison, said Project Get Reel has been a year in the making and hopes for even greater success over Klink Coffee.

“VHS tapes weren’t planned for recycling,” said Yan, co-founder of Project Get Reel. “It requires labour work. It’s a global problem.”

With Project Get Reel, employees will dismantle the tapes, granulate them on site into pellets, and ship the pellets to buyers, Yan said.

Rookie honours for Vaughan Road alum Guard Johneil Simpson averaged 19.2 points per game at Brock Guard Johneil Simpson, who played a year at Vaughan Road Academy, was selected as the top Canadian university basketball rookie.

Enrolled in Brock University’s sports management program, he picked up the Dr. Peter Mullins Trophy as the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) rookie of the year during the CIS final-eight champion-

ship tournament hosted by the Ryerson Rams in March at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

“It’s a big honour, I’m definitely happy I could do that for the program,” said Simpson in a phone interview.

Simpson split his high school years between Riverdale Collegiate and a final year at Vaughan Road

where he closed out his high school career with an Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association (OFSAA) provincial title at the ‘AA’ level.

This season, he averaged 19.2 points per game, which was sixth in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) league and 13th in the CIS.

Weston Community Hub granted preliminary funding Project to offer affordable housing and workplace space DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto Council has approved a plan to fund the new Weston Community Hub. The plan will see Toronto Artscape and 22 John Street Developments Inc. build a new affordable housing/ workplace project constructed on surplus Toronto Parking Authority lands at 22 John St.

The project will see a total of 26 affordable rental housing live/work units built both on the land and the adjacent rental high-rise building at 33 King St. When the project is finished, Artscape will be the operator of the development, managing the units and the hub.

The project is a significant one for Weston, which has been identified as one of 31

Neighbourhood Improvement Areas in the city. The project will help on two fronts: the area’s higher-than-average unemployment rate will be lessened by the 940 new jobs, and the new units will help alleviate the neighbourhood’s lack of affordable housing.

Toronto Council approved a preliminary funding model for the $13.3-million project without debate this week.

But it is still some time before there will be shovels in the ground. Staff expects it will have completed due diligence on the development by 2016.

AluCine Festival screening indie Latin American films DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com This year’s aluCine Latin Film and Media Arts Festival is exploring the diversity of South America, executive director Sinara Rozo said.

The festival, run by a St. Clair Avenue West nonprofit organization of the same name, begins today and takes place at venues across the city.

Films will be screened April 2 to 5, while other events, including art exhibits, workshops and more will run until April 16.

“Mostly, we are celebrating the diversity of

the Latin American continent – the South American continent – the richness in everything that is media arts, performance, music,” Rozo said.

This year’s event, the 15th annual aluCine festival, is a showcase of highly anticipated Latin Canadian and Latin American award-winning independent films. More than 70 films will be screened; all have English subtitles.

“All the films that we show here don’t pay tribute to corporations,” Rozo said. “They’re made by local and international heroes and they talk about realities and issues that

you will never be able to portray and exhibit in a

mainstream festival.”

Rozo said this year’s

program reflects the Latin American diversity.

“We have films for children, we have documentaries, we have LGBTQ films, we have experimental films, we have feature films, we have fiction, drama, animation. It’s a little bit of everything to celebrate that diversity,” she said.

There will be two art exhibits at this year’s festival, both running April 2 to 16 at the Beaver Hall Gallery, 29 McCaul St. One, titled Feelings, is a contemporary exhibit featuring the work of 16 artists. The other is a showcase of Heidi Hassan’s work, titled My

Own Skin/Mi Propia Piel.

This year’s film venues include The Jackman Hall at the Art Gallery of Ontario, 317 Dundas St. W.; Cinecycle, 129 Spadina Ave.; and Theatre Direct at Artscape Wychwood Barns, 601 Christie St. Besides film and art exhibits, there will be opening and closing galas and an awards ceremony, special presentations, live performances, panel discussions and artist talks.

Regular admission tickets cost $10 per screening, or $75 for an all-access pass.

Countdown to Pan Am Games Y

esterday marked the start of the 100-day countdown to this summer’s Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games. Part of the celebrations held to mark the occasion at the Athletes’ Village in the West Donlands included a citizenship court for 100 new Canadians, including North York boxer Arthur Biyarslanov who will be taking part in the Games.

The past month has seen enthusiasm for the Games begin to build across not only the Greater Toronto Area, but the province and country as well.

The March announcement of the Pan Am Games Torch Relay, which starts May 30, will see the Games’ torch visit communities across Canada before settling in to tour Toronto’s neighbourhoods just prior to the opening of the Games on July 10.

A number of high-profile athletic events in the city are also helping raise excitement.

As well last week, residents could take in some of the world’s top wheelchair basketball teams at the Americas Challenge at the Mattamy Centre.

That tourney saw the Canadian men’s team, the defending Olympic gold medal champs, in action at the court they will compete on in the Parapan Am Games. The Mattamy Centre will also host the Pan Am Games basketball, which should see a very strong Canadian men’s team including some top young NBA players from our country.

There’s lots to get excited about as the Games approach.

An update on what kids are thinking today It seems like everybody at work has young kids. It’s always a lot fun when they bring them to the office and I get a kick out of listening to parents talk about them, too. Little ones have been the topic du jour around here since March Break, so I thought I’d provide an update on how they’re doing.

What they think is their official bedtime: They’re not quite sure.

When they think their bedtime should be: That they are sure about.

They’d like it to be later.

Much later. And that it should be mandatory to have one big book and two little books read to them before they hit the sack.

How would you describe kids’ attention spans: Same as adults. They’re long if they’re interested in what they’re doing. If they aren’t interested in what they are doing, their atten-

Is it possible to outsmart kids: Yes, but it takes a little ingenuity.

Is it possible to get them dressed in less than a couple of hours: Also, yes, but it takes an awful lot of ingenuity.

On saying please and thank you: They have to be reminded to do that. Constantly. Just like adults.

Why kids need to go to the bathroom right after you leave home, yet when you asked them a zillion times before you left, they insisted they didn’t have to go: They say they don’t know – and I believe them.

Why a toy they had no

interest in a few minutes earlier they suddenly want to play with the moment they see their brother or sister playing with it: They say they don’t know – but that I don’t believe.

What about humour: They love to laugh.

Their reaction to seeing another kid crying: It makes them want to comfort them.

What happens when they hear somebody in the room pass gas: It makes them giggle. Just like adults.

What they think about cellphones and tablets, Part I: They get antsy watching mommy or maddy yakking or texting on devices instead of paying attention to them.

What they think about cellphones and tablets, Part II: They want to know when

you’re going to buy a cellphone and tablet for them.

Getting their choice of ice cream or candy or chocolate chip cookies: Yummy, yum, yum.

Being told that they’d have to eat all of their vegetables first: Figures. We knew there had to be a catch.

Why they say they have a tummy ache: It’s not from inhaling too much ice cream, candy and chocolate chip cookies. Or being forced to eat all their vegetables first. The tummy’s not actually upset, in fact. It’s just a euphemism for feeling left out or feeling ignored or feeling sad.

You know, the same reason adults say they have a tummy ache.

To celebrate 100 days until the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games approximately 100 people were sworn in as Canadian citizens, serving as a reminder that in 100 days, Toronto will play host to 41 countries.

by Olympic gold-medallist Catriona Le May Doan.

Pan Am boxer Arthur Biyarslanov, and his mother from the Chechen Republic, spoke about the importance sport played in their integration into Canadian society.

Biyarslanov lives in Toronto and trains at a boxing facility in North York.

Am Path wPanPan discussion Am Path board member Glenn Parkinson will discuss the creation of the Pan Am Path April 21 at 7 p.m. at North York Central Library.

Wheelchair wCanada basketball tourney concluded the 2015

Americas wheelchair basketball challenge with a 3-2 record.

The host Canadian men’s wheelchair basketball team held a friendly tournament, which offered a sneak peek at some of the top teams set to compete at the 2015 Parapan American Games in August.

The tournament ended with a 67-54 loss to the United States on March 26 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto.

columns gives subway closures a rest wTTC Fans of weekend-spanning subway closures will be dismayed to learn the TTC isn’t planning any more for its signal upgrade construction.

The rest of us, however, can look forward to the end of multi-day construction delays needed for converting Line 1’s antiquated signal system. In fact, the TTC thinks it can reduce the required closures for the upgrades by half thanks to a “revised strategy” that, according to TTC spokesperson Mike Palmer, entails shifting contracts and work related to the $559-million infrastructure project.

It will be four years – at least – before the work is complete.

NUMBER TWO – congestion winWE’RE

Toronto is ranked the second-worst city in the country when it comes to traffic congestion, according to rankings released this week by the GPS manufacturer TomTom. The study, which comes from “historical” GPS data

Istanbul, Turkey was ranked the worst city in the world for traffic. In comparison Toronto ranked 47th globally.

Tory’s fortunes lie in the hands of city’s provincial, federal cousins It may well be that when all the accounts are in, the success or failure of Mayor John Tory’s debut term as mayor will be decided by factors entirely beyond his control.

To a degree this is so with most political leaders. A moribund federal government can be buoyed by a robust economy; a competent provincial government, sunk by a collapse in the markets. And a mayor, particularly in a city like Toronto, succeeds or fails based on the actions of both of those levels of government. If goodwill flows from above, it will rise from the electorate.

Of course, a smart mayor can make lemonade with a stack of lemons from unfriendly governments. But Tory has, through both the city’s circumstance and his own declarations, tied his own hands.

Firstly, Toronto has great and immediate need for moneys beyond its means.

david nickle the city is in need of $150 million more in order to be finished, and neither the province nor the federal government has shown willingness to assist.

On Monday, Tory affirmed his election promise to deal with the repair backlog at Toronto Community Housing – spending $864 million over the next decade to fix the housing stock, and asking other levels of government to help.

And that’s just this week.

Toronto will need billions of dollars from the provincial and federal governments if it is to move ahead with Tory’s SmartTrack plan. Toronto really did need some $86 million this year, to balance its budget, and didn’t get it.

Tory is putting everything – literally everything – on his ability to work with Liberals provincially, and nominally

Conservatives federally, and do so well enough to cause them to let these billions flow.

Tory believes it’s a good bet.

Since before he even joined the race for mayor, his biggest selling point has been his ability to sell the city to a blue-chip Rolodex of government and business contacts. But if in a year or so nobody’s buying, Tory may have to do things that violate his other electionyear brand: that of a fiscally conservative business leader unwilling to burden taxpayers with more taxes and fees.

If he does those things he might be able to fulfill at least a portion of his agenda.

But for people who voted for Tory in 2014, will the shift be acceptable enough to csupport him for a second term?

Tory needs the federal and provincial governments to listen. His fate is in their hands.
