A historical photo of Silverthorn Junior Public School. Photo/COURTESY
Preserving Silverthorn memories Neighbourhood elementary school near Keele and Eglinton being demolished CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com
S
chool’s out for summer, but students won’t be returning to the former Silverthorn Junior Public School in the fall. The almost century-old school on Ypres Road near Keele Street and Eglinton Avenue is being demolished to make way for Silver Thorn Heights, a new residential area that will consist of semidetached and single family homes. While the physical building may be gone, the memories remain, particularly for two former students. Martin Proctor and Laurie Roberts have already started to preserve the history of their beloved school by collecting old photos and documents. “This is my first school,” said Proctor, who attended Silverthorn Junior from 1966 to 1971. “When we first went to school, we weren’t just singing O Canada. We were also singing God Saved the Queen.” Proctor also recalled the hanging lights in the classroom were replaced with the more common fluorescent lights used these days, and the auditorium was converted into the school library. Roberts, who attended Silverthorn Junior in the 1950s, remembered one major change during his time as a student. He was on his way to school on a Tuesday evening for 7 p.m. as he regularly did to attend the

weekly Boy Scouts meeting. But as he approached the school that November night in 1957, firefighters from the York Township firehall were already there trying to put out the blaze for four hours in the three-storey building. About 1,150 students who attended Silverthorn Junior had to be accommodated at neighbouring schools while their school was being repaired. The fire damage was so extensive on the third floor, the school eventually re-opened as a two-
storey building. During that time, the Silverthorn area consisted of primarily working-class families with enough kids to fill Silverthorn Junior School. “It was a very big school,” said Roberts, recalling another memory of the school yard always bustling with activity. “There was a ball game playing morning till night, from June till September. There were four fields at one time.” Adjacent houses were subse-
quently cleared to build Kane Senior Public School in 1969, which later changed its name to Kane Middle School in the early 1990s. The school name would change once more when Silverthorn Junior School closed in 2011 and amalgamated with Kane Middle School. To pay homage to the community school that survived a major fire and saw thousands of students come through its doors for more than 90-plus years, the school was renamed Silverthorn Community School. The Toronto District School Board had long cited declining school enrolment experienced across the city for the need to sell some of its assets, including several schools that were operating at half capacity. York South-Weston School Trustee Chris Tonks had family ties to Silverthorn Junior with his father, former MP Alan Tonks, and grandfather, the late Chris Tonks, who served as reeve in York, both having attended the school. But with the changing demographics, he hoped the new residential development would once again see the area filled with more children. “I think it’s a positive investment that’s being made in the community,” Tonks said. “I’m hopeful there will be rejuvenation and growth in the area,” said Tonks.
making memories With a road being built to accommodate the new housing complex, Laurie Roberts started a campaign to remember Silverthorn Junior School one more way. “We’re actually trying to get the street that they’re putting in named after Mr. (George) Brownlee,” said Roberts, a former student, noting he was the principal of the school for 20 years and a teacher before that for another 10 years. As the self-appointed historian of the Silverthorn area, Roberts is also requesting anyone with connections to Silverthorn Junior School to send in old photos and documents to silverthornmemories@gmail.com and include your graduation year to help with the archival process. Another former student, Martin Proctor, has already posted photos on Facebook documenting the demolition of the school building at http://on.fb.me/1coauiO “We’re going to miss it,” Roberts said. To see photos documenting the demolition, visit http://on.fb. me/1coauiO To share old photos of the school, email silverthornmemories@gmail.com

Let facts, not emotions, guide our judgment E
motions are running high in the aftermath of Sammy Yatim’s shooting death. News over the weekend that the 18-year-old died in a confrontation with police, was met with shock and grief. The footage of the incident from cellphone video escalated that emotion. It’s become common, with mobile video devices in every purse and pocket, that emergency situations involving police are captured and shared online with thousands of viewers. We become spectators – in this case, standing on the curb, watching as police yell orders at an individual who’s alone on a streetcar in the middle of the night. Shots are fired. Sirens blaze. More shots, more yelling. Then a crackling sound – it could our view there’s be a Taser - and the video comes to an end. Await findings Based on what appears to happened, people are in in shooting of have an uproar. They’re demanding Sammy Yatim justice for the teen’s death, singling out the officer who fired his weapon. Some groups are going so far as to blame the police force as a whole – as we saw during the march Monday night outside 14 Division headquarters. But it needs to be impressed upon people that the facts are not yet known. Of course, it’s a tragedy that a young man died but we can’t be so quick to lay fault - especially not when that judgment is based upon a dark, blurry cellphone video. The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is looking for answers. Police Chief Bill Blair acknowledged the need for those answers and promises full cooperation with the SIU, including a full review of the policies, procedures and training of the officers involved. Ontario’s Ombudsman, André Marin, is also set to review the fatal shooting. People need to step back, be patient and await the findings. Even Yatim’s family spoke out, saying they hold no ill will against the Toronto police force. And when the investigation is complete, the police need to be transparent in sharing the findings and the recommendations and must follow through on holding accountable anyone who may be at fault. We may not have been there to know exactly what happened, but we know enough to never want another police standoff to end so tragically.

S
o, I was soaking up the gorgeous weather on my favourite park bench Sunday morning when a white-haired gentleman, who had just come out of Now That’s What I Call A Bagel across the street, accidentally dropped his sunglasses on the sidewalk. I was about to let him know, when a kid zipping by on a skateboard beat me to the punch. He came to a screeching stop, scooped them up and yelled out, “Hey oldtimer, you lost something. Over here.” The man winced. “Thanks for retrieving my shades,” he said. “But I don’t care to be referred to as oldtimer. If it’s all the same to you, that is.” “No worries, gramps,” the kid replied cheerfully. The wince turned to a grimace. “I ain’t too high on gramps either,” the man

The kid was digging himself in deeper and deeper, but soldiered on blissfully unaware. “You prefer senior citizen, perhaps?” “Not quite.” “Golden-ager?” “Fraid not.” “Boomer?” “Hardly.” “Zoomer?” “Sorry.” “Double Nickels?

Why don’t you try Mickey?” “Huh,” the kid replied surprised. “That’s my name. Mickey. Always has been. Always will be. Feel free to

Now if you’ll excuse me...” Then the man grabbed the kid’s skateboard, popped a quick wheelie and handed it back to him. “Gnarly ride, junior,” he said. “Uh, I’m not too crazy about being called junior, Mickey,” the kid replied. “What is it with you young whippersnappers today?” Mickey asked perplexed. “If it’s all the same to you, I also don’t like to be called a young whipp...” “Whatever. Later dude, keep it real, know what I’m saying?” And then Mickey hopped on his Harley, popped another wheelie and took off. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. Hospital partners with university Humber River Hospital has reached a formal affiliation partnership with Queen’s University that will see students, residents and clinical fellows rotate through all of the hospital’s acute care service disciplines, the organizations announced recently. The first rotation will begin this month with the women and children’s program. Hospital president, Dr. Rueben Devlin, praised the agreement. “Humber River is uniquely positioned to be an institution of learning for medical students at all levels,” he said in a statement. “The educational opportunities that present themselves at Humber River Hospital are varied and numerous. It’s a very challenging, yet very rewarding, rotation for our Queen’s students and we are delighted to formalize our partnership with the university.” The partnership spotlights the expertise of the hospital’s medical staff as clinicians and teachers, the hospital’s vice-president of medical and academic affairs, Dr. Ray Martin, said. “It speaks volumes that an organization as impressive as Queen’s University chose Humber as its Toronto partner,” Martin said in a statement. “It is a strong endorsement of the quality of our medical education program and the instruction medical students receive at our hospital.” Queen’s is excited about the partnership, the university’s dean of the faculty of health sciences, Dr. Richard Reznick said. “We welcome Humber’s emerging strategy that is focusing increasing attention on educating health professionals for the future,” he said in a statement. “We look forward to our engagement on the vital issue of advancing inter-professional education and care. We are also excited about the potential opportunities that may be provided to our learners when they take advantage of the impressive new facilities being constructed for the HRH redevelopment project.” The new Humber River, which will be North America’s first fully digital hospital, is under construction at Hwy. 401 and Keele Street.
Tunnelling continues for Eglinton LRT project Tunneling for the Eglinton Crosstown light rail transit project (LRT) continues below Eglinton Avenue West. For interested future riders, the light rail vehicle (LRV) to service the 19-kilometre route scheduled to open in 2020 will be on display at this year’s Canadian National Exhibition (CNE). A mock-up of the Bombardier Flexity Freedom will be docked outside the Direct Energy Centre, near the Princes’ Gates, for the entirety of the CNE which kicks off Aug. 16.

expands Quiet Zones on rush hour trains wGO GO Transit has expanded Quiet Zones noise restriction areas to all of its rush hour trains. The program is in effect on the upper levels of all GO trains servicing rush hour commutes both morning and afternoon. During
that time, commuters seated in the specially designated areas will be expected to refrain from creating excessive noise through loud conversations, music or beeping electronic devices. A recent customer survey indicated over 80 per cent of respondents supported the program. The restriction will not be in place on weekends when there are more families and train riders are generally more “boisterous”, said Proc, GO’s vicepresident of customer service.

Police collect nearly 500 firearms during Pixels for Pistols CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair commended law-abiding residents for turning in their firearms as part of the 2013 Pixels for Pistols programs. About 485 firearms and 22,000 ammunition were collected through the annual gun amnesty program over four weeks from residents who surrendered their unwanted firearms to police for destruction.

This is an outstanding example of police working with the private sector. – Chief Bill Blair
“It’s an excellent result,” said Blair last month, noting the guns submitted by honest, law-abiding residents may have otherwise been vulnerable to theft by would-be criminals. “We are grateful for all the citizens who have participated in the program.” As part of the program, participating residents received a digital camera from Henry’s Camera in return for their unwanted firearms. “This is an outstanding example of police working with the private sector,” Blair said. Jan Smith from Henry’s Camera was on hand to give a couple cameras away at the media press conference, including one to a retired Brigadier General who was with Canada’s Military Attache to the U.S. in the early 1970s. “It’s just one step closer to keeping our communities safe,” she said. Although the program is no longer running, police encourage residents to surrender any unwanted firearms to police for destruction. Do not bring any firearms or ammunition to the police station.

Soknacki ponders mayoral run The electoral battleground that was formerly known as Scarborough could become very interesting in 2014. Scratch that. It’s already interesting, now that Mayor Rob Ford has managed to gather enough votes to support building subway tunnels east and north from Kennedy Station – a move that at once degrades the reach of rapid transit in Scarborough and feeds the local appetite for heavy-duty infrastructure improvements. Scarborough voters’ good will on this matter could well send Ford’s damaged mayoralty into a second term, scandals be damned. What it’s on the verge of becoming is titanically interesting. David Soknacki, a former budget chief under former mayor David Miller and a former councillor from Scarborough’s east end, is considering adding his name to the growing list of high-profile candidates for the next mayor of Toronto. Of all of them – Karen Stintz, John Tory, Olivia Chow – he’s got the lowest profile. Since
david nickle the city stepping away from council in 2006, Soknacki’s been spending his time heading up Parc Downsview Park, writing a column in this newspaper and tending his spice manufacturing and exporting business, Ecom Food Industries. But should Soknacki choose to run, Ford will be in for a fight, at least in Scarborough. Soknacki and Ford have certain similarities. Both are business owners, both are Progressive Conservatives, and both came to council with ideas to reform the place. Both have ideas about transit in Scarborough. But while both agree it needs to be improved, beyond that their divergence could not be more pronounced. Ford, in case anyone missed it, is a subway man. Soknacki has been a consistent supporter of light rail. Ford is working on ways to pay for the subway. Soknacki is sup-
porting a plan that is already financed by the provincial government. So if it goes ahead, there will be a spectacle of two candidates: both wealthy and Conservative; one from Etobicoke who shows his love for Scarborough with the promise of a subway; another who shows his love for Scarborough by living there, and promising the old light rail plan. Toronto is of course larger than Scarborough. But if Ford wants to win a second term, he can’t afford to lose what amounts to nearly a third of the entire city. Facing Olivia Chow or Karen Stintz or even John Tory, Ford’s support in Scarborough is strong. Facing an opponent with hometown bona fides and a strong argument against the chimeric promise of an unfunded subway line, the mayor could be in real trouble.

Eyeing GO corridors for subway The TTC will study using existing GO rail corridors for a proposed subway route. A motion approved by the TTC board asks staff to collaborate with provincial transit planning body Metrolinx on examining the suitability of running a future Downtown Relief Line (DRL) along the Georgetown and Lakeshore East tracks. Metrolinx has placed the construction of a relief line as a priority for its Big Move transit network, and has pledged to build the DRL within 15 years if the project is funded. station closure back on wPape
Pape Station will close for an extended amount of time after all. The station was scheduled to shut down for 12 straight days in June to speed up ongoing renovations, but the plan was shelved when contracted ceramic tile workers walked off the job as part of a province-wide labour action by the Brick and Allied Craft Union. Now that the strike is settled, the TTC says it will instead shutter the station from Aug. 19 to 30 during which time both bus and subway service will bypass Pape.
