York singers to show off their talents at the CNE CNE Rising Star Talent Competition Aug. 21 - Sept. 6 DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com
T
hree young York singers will be among a contingent of more than 100 performing artists hoping to wow judges and audiences at this year’s CNE. They will be competing in the CNE’s 29th annual Rising Star Talent Competition, which runs from Aug. 21 to Sept. 6, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., on the International Stage inside the Enercare Centre. The junior (ages six to 12) finals is on Saturday, Sept. 5 and the youth (13 to 21) finals is Sunday, Sept. 6. Kimberly Field, who lives near Dufferin Street and Eglinton Avenue, is returning to the competition for an eighth consecutive year, saying the contest is a great place to practice singing and build her confidence. She has
competed at other contests as well. “It’s just something I love to do, I love singing. Even though I don’t move onto the second round, I still feel happy that I’m singing and doing what I love,” she said. The 19-year-old Humber College pharmacy technician student has been singing since she was three years old, inspired by her parents who belted out songs on a karaoke machine at home. She started taking vocal lessons at around age 10 and writes her own music. She also plays piano. While she hasn’t advanced past the preliminary round of the contest, she said she’s improved as a performer each year, based on the family videos recorded by her dad in the competition. Holding her back in the contest each year has been her song of choice, she believes, saying she must choose more difficult music. This year, she’s bringing an original piece of music, titled Girl In My Dreams, written by a family friend. Fellow York singer Carolyn

Kimberly Field, 19, is a returning participant in the competition.
Hao is no stranger to the large stage, even though she’s just 10 years old, having performed at CNTV’s Chinese New Year’s Gala at the Sony Centre the last two years, and with the Canadian Children’s Opera Company’s Alice in Wonderland production. “I like to sing a lot and I like to dance and perform. I just wanted to try for the contest. And I like
the CNE,” she said. This is her first year in the CNE competition, but she’s won a number of singing awards already, including a first-place finish in the CPAC Summer Talent Competition of 2014 and a Top 30 finish at YTV’s The Next Star talent contest, among others. At the CNE, she will sing Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s See You Again, singing Charlie Puth’s parts and rapping Wiz Khalifa’s parts. The Claude Watson School of the Arts student hopes to become a musician, but she’s entering the contest open to the fact she may not get past the preliminaries. “I just want the experience. I think every time I go on stage I get better because I get more confident every time,” Carolyn said. Another newcomer to the contest, Victoria Azevedo, 13, shares a similar dream of being a musician when she grows up, fully understanding winning the competition won’t be easy. “I would love to win, but I just want to try my best,” the St. Matthew Catholic School Grade 8 student said.
She decided to enter the contest after she heard good things about it from some of her friends who have been in it. The Eglinton Avenue and Keele Street area resident has been singing since a younge age, and began taking vocal lessons at age 7. She also takes piano, acting and dance lessons and is featured on the Mini Pop Kids 12 album. Victoria, who is a fan of some yesteryear pop and R and B musicians such as Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, is bringing a certain old-school style to the show at the CNE. “I like it because there’s more meaning to it. Now, there’s a lot of electric and beats, I like the soul music,” she said. She’ll be performing the music of one of her and her dad’s favourite musicians, Tom Jones’ I Who Have Nothing. The competition is open to Ontario residents and accepts various disciplines of performing arts. Admission to the contest was through an online video audition.

The Ex: marking a special time of year for Toronto families
Write us
T
oronto summers have an ebb and flow to them marked by different events and traditions that define the season, but with the opening of the Canadian National Exhibition tomorrow comes the clearest sign of all: the end of summer is approaching. It’s part of life in the city and of being a Torontonian, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. The 137th annual version of The Ex opens Friday and continues until Labour Day on Monday, Sept. 7. The fair itself has its own traditions, including lots of wacky food creations, concerts, displays, theme days and the Canadian International Air Show to wrap it all up on the Labour Day weekend. Toronto families carefully pick the days they will attend based on events they want to see, and those are handed down our view traditions through the generations. You can pretty much bet that if your A Toronto parents made a point of going to The Ex on the air show weekend tradition because that’s what they wanted to see, you will now be taking returns your own kids, or maybe even grandkids, to also see the air show. Others make attending on Warriors Day or for the Labour Day parade a part of their family traditions. Respecting those traditions has been one of the reasons the CNE continues to be so successful and holds a special place in the hearts of Torontonians. The Ex, though, is not bound by tradition as it is also the place to see the newest innovations and products. The CNE makes sure it offers new events and experiences every year, and this year one of them is the Craft Beer Fest that takes place for the first time this summer. Though often referred to as bittersweet for kids who start counting the days until school starts again, the CNE is far from the only thing going on in Toronto over the remaining days of summer. Just a quick look around shows us this weekend has the Scarborough Afro-Carib Fest at Albert Campbell Square, the Tirgan Iranian Festival at Harbourfront, Ukrainian Independence Day at Centennial Park in Etobicoke, and the Tommy Thompson Park Butterfly Festival in the Beach, to name but a few. As always, if you’re looking for things to do in the city, visit us at insidetoronto.com/toronto-events

column
Welcome to the dog days of summer Summer camp must have ended Saturday morning, because when I walked up the street and parked myself on my favourite bench on the corner that evening, the neighbourhood was teeming with kids we hadn’t seen since the end of school. A group of four nearby was trying to figure out what to do on their first night back. Tristan: “So, what’s it going to be, gentlemen? We’ve been standing here for half an hour and haven’t been able to come up with anything. So why don’t we just head over to my house and download a movie? What would you like to see?” Serge: “Somebody else pick. I’m too excited and nervous following the Blue Jays to even think about anything else.” Arjun: “I’ll choose then. How about 102 Dalmatians? There’s three alone on the other side of the block as we speak.”
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY Jake: “I never saw 101 Dalmatians. Will I be able to follow the plot?” Tristan: “What plot? They ran out of story lines by 48 Dalmatians.” Serge: “It was closer to 25 Dalmatians if you ask me.” Arjun: “What are you both talking about? They were classics. All of them. Starting with One Dalmatian.” Jake: “I don’t get what the big fascination is with Dalmatians? You take away the spots, what’s left?” Tristan: “You can’t take those spots away. They’re stuck on forever.” Serge: “He’s right. I tried once. They wouldn’t budge.” Arjun: “One thing I always wanted to know, in 102 Dalmatians, is it the same original 101 plus one more? Or are they 102 new ones?”
Jake: “You really think there are actually 102? Come on. Ask yourself, when do you ever see them all together in the same room at the same time? My guess is that were probably only five or 10 of them, max, and the director filmed them from different angles to make it seem like there were 102.” Tristan: “There might not have even been one real one. They were probably all computer generated.” Serge: “I heard Flipper wasn’t even a dolphin. It was Lassie in a wetsuit.” Arjun: “Yeah, right. And I suppose Skippy the Bush Kangaroo was really Lassie in faux fur with Minnie Mouse in faux fur in her pouch.” Jake: “Actually, it was Mini-Me in faux fur. Minnie wanted too much money.” Tristan: “Thanks a lot for spoiling the ending, man. I haven’t seen Skippy the Bush Kangaroo yet. Good friend you are.” Serge: “I think I’ll pass
on the Dalmatians, if that’s OK. Now, if there is a 102 Dachshunds movie, count me in. Everybody loves dachshunds.” Arjun: “I thought it was Raymond everybody loved. And what are dachshunds?” Jake: “You’re joking. They’re those cute little wiener dogs nobody can resist.” Tristan: “You got that right. Every time I see one of those adorable pooches I just wanna pick it up and give it a big hug.” Serge: “I wouldn’t if I were you, Tristan. You squeeze one with those big arms of yours and it won’t be a wiener dog anymore. It’ll turn into a pancake dog.” ...to be continued. In the meantime, it’s official, the kids are back. Now playing at a corner near me. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. Summer is over - the CNE returns Aug. 21 to Sept. 7 The 137th annual Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) is almost here and we can already smell the deep-fried Oreos. Along with the shopping and goodies at the international pavilion, this year has a handful of new shows to check out including RUSH: Parkour Demonstrations,
the West Coast Lumberjack Show, Bon Voyage! Acrobatic & Ice Skating Show and The XPogo Stunt Team. But if you get tired of stunts, you can also rock out to the lineup of free concerts from Cody Simpson, Tokyo Police Club, Rick Springfield and Dallas Smith to
name a few. Carnival-goers will also be able to gear up for the CNE’s first Craft Beer Fest, which will have 11 regional master brewers at the returning Food Truck Frenzy. Returning favourites are the PC Financial Sky Ride, The President’s Choice SuperDogs
Show, butter sculptures, the 66th annual Canadian International Air Show and the sand sculpture exhibit. The CNE kicks off Friday and runs until Monday, Sept. 7. General admission is $18; adults 65-plus and children 13 and under get in for $15; chil-
dren four and under get in free; a family pass (two adults, two children or one adult and three children) is $52; a ride-all-day pass, not including admission, costs $40.

Residents invited to ceremony >>>from page 1 Association (WBSA), consisting of 34 youth aged 13 to 19 travelling with 13 adult chaperones, have invited local residents to attend the ceremony of remembrance at 3 p.m. to be held at Westlake Memorial Park, 86 Jasper Ave., in honour of their namesakes. “It’s a very moving experience,” said Lee MacNeil, a member of the Mount Dennis Legion, who has previously attended one of their commemorative ceremonies. “They’re amazing.” The bilingual ceremony,
spoken in both French and English, will pay tribute to the three Westlake Brothers of Mount Dennis who died in the early days of June in 1944 during the Second World War. MacNeil said some of the Westlake family members may be in attendance as well. Members of the WBSA landed in Canada on Aug. 1 and have planned a tour through Quebec, Ottawa, London and then Toronto to host 20 memorial ceremonies.
In addition to the service at Westlake Park, they will be hosting another ceremony at Moss Park Armoury tomorrow at 10 a.m. in honour of the Queen’s Own Rifles Regiment whose soldiers were one of the first to reach the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. On Saturday, the WBSA will also be marching in the Warriors’ Day Parade at the CNE.

BuskerFest intro for performer >>>from page 1 For 29-year-old Rebecca Zelewicz, this will be her first time as a performer and not as a spectator at the annual event. “I’m very excited to be a part of it,” said Zelewicz, who goes by the performing name Bex in Motion because she’s always moving. Her show features a mix of hypnotic hoop tricks, playful audience interaction, fire and acrobatics. She’ll start with hula hoops, then get members of the audience involved, before breaking out the flaming double staff and hoops. The Toronto born and raised performer, who now lives near Bathurst Street and St. Clair Avenue, did not set out to be a street performer, but her interests in life led her this way. She has been hula hooping for about four years, professionally since last year. She took gymnastics when she was a child, competing at the rec level. As a teenager, she started on trampoline and competed at the pro-

vincial level. She also taught gymnastics and trampoline for more than a decade. An avid yogi, she did a yoga teacher training program, and with a degree in kinesiology, she went to teacher’s college, thinking she would one day become a classroom teacher. However, picking up some juggling skills and spinning fire with the local New Model Circus Army, she began doing
short hula hoop and fire shows, first for fun, which grew in length and she now does full shows. “I feel like I was meant to do this,” she said. She particularly enjoys performing on the street. “You’re having really honest interactions with people. People are there if they want to watch your show. They can come, they can go. They’re not forced to give you money. The theatre is available to everyone and anyone.” In her early hula hooping days, she taught the art at festivals, but seeing performers, she was inspired to make her own show. She appears at a number of festivals, and hopes her work inspires others to get up and be active. BuskerFest happens on Yonge Street between Queen and College streets. Transit not our only election issue There’s a federal election coming up on the distant horizon. For now, the talk on Toronto airwaves is about criminal justice, cheques, and other matters related to the Mike Duffy trial. At some point in the long weeks leading up to Oct. 19, one hopes that talk will centre closer to Toronto and our needs. Earlier in the summer, Mayor John Tory held meetings with representatives of the Liberals and New Democrats, and earlier in the year spent time making Toronto’s case to the federal Conservatives. As he pointed out then, things were looking pretty good for Toronto: two of three parties were committed to funding his Smart Track transit plan, and Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau appears to be waiting for the right time to say so. So really, for Toronto, there is no downside. Well, that would be the case if transit weren’t the only story. Toronto has other needs that only the federal government can properly meet.
david nickle the city We could use help with our crumbling stock of affordable housing. We could do with a federally funded national child care program. And back at transit – once we get finished building a Scarborough subway along about the same route as the Smart Track plan, we’re going to need money for the downtown relief line that everyone agrees is the really crucial transit improvement. These all should be, at some point, deal-breaking or dealmaking policies in making a rational choice for our next prime minister. As matters are unfolding, however, a rational, Toronto-centric choice is not what will be on most Toronto voters’ minds. If voters were taking simple enlightened self-interest into account, the child benefit cheques the federal Conservatives sent out just before the writ was dropped
should have had some impact on polling for them. While it’s early days in this very long election, it’s a safe bet that voting Torontonians will be dividing along lines more familiar from the past couple of elections: Harper Nation, if you will, and the remainder of the city looking to turf the bum out. That divide was in evidence when Harper stopped by Etobicoke (ground zero for that other Nation) in the company of an angry, foulmouthed man who swore at reporters and suggested they all cheated on their taxes. From another part of the city, I and other Torontonians watched the display with a horrified recognition. Many elections ago, former prime minister Kim Campbell made the point that elections were no time to discuss issues. Those things get sorted out afterwards, when we’ve all gotten the bile out of our systems.

David Nickle is The Guardian’s city hall reporter. His column runs every Thursday.
A. Macdonald’s name carved in stone wJohn The plaza outside Union Station has been officially renamed after Canada’s first prime minister. At a ceremony Tuesday, the newly renovated space was christened Sir John A. Macdonald Plaza and a plaque erected in honour of the man most credited with building the Canadian Pacific Railway. But the designation doesn’t come without some controversy given Macdonald’s role in instituting a “head tax” on Chinese migrants and his policies on First Nations people during his near-20 years as prime minister. The move represents a diminished plan to honour Macdonald after a city survey found the vast majority of respondents were opposed to naming the entire station after him. testing aNNOUNCEMENTS wTTC
Until the end of the year the TTC will test the effectiveness of pre-boarding announcements intended to assist visually impaired riders. The pilot project will take
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT place on a handful of buses on the 11 Bayview and 7 Bathurst routes. When the bus approaches a stop, as the front doors open, an external speaker will broadcast what route it serves and where it’s headed. The TTC has until 2017 to comply with provincial regulations requiring preboarding announcements on all of its vehicles. ROAD CONSTRUCTION on track wback
The Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games are over and construction projects that were suspended are now set to resume resulting in more road closures. The work includes repairs on the Gardiner Expressway, which were scheduled to get underway yesterday, between Strachan Avenue and Bathurst Street and will require a reduction of one lane in each direction. Other projects ready to resume this week are road-
resurfacing projects on Dufferin Street, O’Connor Drive and The Queensway. For a list of projects and accompanying road closures, check out www.toronto.ca/ inview FORUM SCHEDULED FOR OCT. 1 wSTREETS

Canadian men’s team takes bronze in Parapan Am sitting volleyball Four West Park Healthcare clients among team members FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com It wasn’t the colour they had hoped for, but the Canadian men’s sitting volleyball team scored the bronze medal with a win over Colombia last Friday. This marks the third straight bronze-medal finish for Canada’s men’s team in Parapan Am competition, having won third place in the 2007 Rio and 2011 Guadalajara Games. In front of a supportive home crowd, Canada won in three straight sets with scores of 28-26, 25-17, and 25-18 inside the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House at Morningside Avenue and Am Games wTheParapan end with a bang Parapan Am Games

The ceremony ended with a fireworks display.

best showing ever at the Parapan Am Games, winning 168 medals, including 50 gold. Canada placed second in the medal standings behind Brazil. Swimmer Aurelie Rivard, 19, was Canada’s most decorated female athlete of the Games, winning six gold medals and one silver and

The win came a day after a heartbreaking loss to the United States, which saw the Americans win in four sets of 26-24, 25-23, 16-25, and 25-21, which all but shut the door on Canada’s shot at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. Brazil wook the gold medal in a win over the U.S. on Friday. “We wanted to come in and play well and win in three (sets) and we did that,” Canada’s captain Austin Hinchey told reporters after Friday’s game. “We were a little down after our loss (Thursday). I waited four years for that game and it was a huge loss for us. But I’m really proud of our guys. We’ve never played in front of a crowd like this and it was big for us.” Canada still has a shot – albeit a long one – at the Rio Games when they compete at the 2016 Intercontinental and World ParaVolley in Hangzhou, China March 17 to 23. It’s not gold and it’s not silver, but we still worked hard.” Like teammates Jesse Buckingham, Jason Naval and Andrew Tucker, Anderson is a West Park Healthcare Centre amputation rehabilitation service/prosthetics and orthotics service patient, having lost his left leg in 2008 due to a mystery viral infection. Canada’s coach Ray Sewell said Thursday’s loss was difficult for the team, but they bounced back to take the bronze. “They performed really well,” he said. “Colombia is a strong team. It was a good match.”

transit
TTCriders seeks members to fight rising transit fares Advocacy group seeks ‘route captains’ to solicit support RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com TTCriders wants to start a revolution. The city’s largest transit advocacy group is recruiting volunteers to act as “route captains” to engage transit users at bus stops and subway stations, advocate for local service improvements, and lobby city councillors to speak out in favour of better TTC funding. According to group spokesperson Suhail Barot, the recruitment drive is meant to give voice to a mass of transit riders, particularly with transportation a key issue in
the October federal election, and a TTC fare hike all but sure for next year. “1.8 million people take transit in Toronto every day,” said Barot during an interview last week. “If we can get them engaged we can really build a movement.” The group is planning a day of action on Monday, Sept. 13 and will canvas approximately 50 transit locations on the importance of better funding for the perpetually cash-strapped TTC, which has reported a preliminary operating budget shortfall of nearly $100 million for next year in the wake of announcements to improve and restore service to pre-2011 levels. TTCriders has made a name for itself of late with agitprop protests and social media shaming of political figures through awareness campaigns such as #TTCsardines, which has captured the level of disenchantment by transit users.
Photo/COURTESY
TTCriders and supporters rally against higher TTC fares at City Hall in January 2014. The group is currently recruiting new members to continue its fight against transit fare increases.
Even elected officials are frequently spouting the group’s catchphrases and slogans.
THE BEST OF WESTON
MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL
That politicians are eager to co-opt TTCriders’ message is a sign they understand the importance of public transit
for a city like Toronto, Barot said. “They seem to be getting the message of the importance
of better transit. And if they don’t do anything else we will hold them accountable,” he said. Barot said the group will also continue to target the provincial government for failing to provide adequate operational funds for the TTC, which relies overwhelmingly on fare box revenue and city subsidy to meet its budget needs. “We’ve worked to get the province to fund the TTC’s operations which they stopped doing over 15 years ago,” he said. “You need funding to expand the system and lower fares. Funding comes from the city and it could come from the province and the federal government as well. You can’t make the system better unless the resources are available.”

parapan am games end with a bang Clockwise from top left: Toronto Mayor John Tory, left, passes the Pan Am Games flag to Americas Paralympic Committee president José Luis Campo who then passes it to Mayor Luis Castañeda Lossio of Lima, Peru during the finale of the Parapan Am Games closing ceremony Saturday at Nathan Phillips Square.
