Join fruitful tour of edible trees in York on Saturday An Edible Tree Tour will be held Saturday at Ben Nobleman Park, 1075 Eglinton Ave., from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The tour, organized by Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests (LEAF), Not Far From The Tree and Orchard People, will take place at the city’s first community orchard located in a public park, across from Eglinton West subway station. The tour is designed to showcase edible tree foods found throughout the city. Participants will also learn about the volunteer fruit tree picking program run by Not Far From The Tree, which sees urban fruit, that would otherwise go to waste, put to good use. Organizers suggest a $5 donation to participate.

KICKS FOR KIDS: Participants practice their skills at the 13th annual Kicks for Kids Soccer Camp Tuesday at Eglinton Flats. The free three-day program for boys and girls aged eight to 16, hosted by Toronto Police’s 12 Division, brings together youth and provides them with a safe and positive environment to connect with each other and police.
Major gift announcement expected for Humber River Hospital Health Minister Deb Matthews is expected to be on hand at Humber River Hospital today as pharmaceutical giant Apotex Inc. announces a multi-million dollar gift to the hospital. Matthews will join other dignitaries at a 10:30 a.m. press
conference on the construction site of the hospital at Hwy. 401 and Keele Street. A major hospital program area will be named in Apotex’s honour to recognize the donation. The new Humber River will
be North America’s first fully digital hospital. For example, patients will be able to check in for surgery at kiosks. Because patient records will be automatically updated, they won’t have to answer the same questions over and over
again. Patients will also be able to order meals from their bedside, have video calls with their families and access multi-language educational materials. Doctors will be able to use voice-recognition technology at
patients’ bedsides rather than scrawling notes. The $1.75-billion hospital is expected to open in the fall of 2015.

Pitching in for play Children from the community near Upwood Park/Salvador Del Mundo Co-operative Homes helped design their dream playground in the JaneChurch area. It took volunteers less than eight hours Saturday to make the dream come true.
Top, volunteers mix cement in preparation for the construction of a playground near Upwood Park on Saturday. The playground was designed by residents, and funded by Foresters Insurance with the help of KaBOOM!, a non-profit group dedicated to bringing play to children across North America. T
he City of Toronto’s planning department ‘officially’ kicked off a series of public outreach meetings – 16 in total –Tuesday at Nathan Phillips Square. These information sessions are an important way to keep Torontonians engaged with their city, their neighbourhoods, and most importantly the planning decisions city hall makes on their behalf. Dubbed Planners in Public Spaces (PiPS), these meetings will have staff addressing the public on planning matters, giving residents an opportunity to speak with those who provide council with reports on developments across the city. Toronto planner Giulio Cescato acknowledged the public only sees them when there is a big planning meeting or on controversial develour view opments or studies. With that knowledge, the planning department opted to give Have your Torontonians the chance to speak say on local to planning staff about both genissues to do with city planning development eral and – in the areas where the meetings are taking place – ask specific questions regarding development in that community. On so many levels, this initiative is extremely beneficial to everyone involved: city staff can hear directly from residents, without the stresses of an official development meeting where tempers can often run high, and residents can understand some of the specifics that go into planning a neighbourhood. Every community, every street, every neighbourhood has its own issues and challenges – North York is not the Beach, Parkdale is not Scarborough, Etobicoke is not the centre of the city, East York is not Bloor West nor is it York. Each neighbourhood has its own experiences, its own demands for development. These meetings give residents an understanding of how a development has come to be, and why it came to be. This creates understanding well beyond the topic at hand. Whether it’s budget debates, the potential closing of libraries and schools, or issues with a high-rise condo proposal, meetings to learn more about any given subject are a true sign of a forward-thinking city. Development issues are some of the least-discussed because development in any city is a good thing. No one wants to stop development, because it brings many economic and social benefits to a city. So, we call on planning staff to continue these outreach initiatives and start planning many, many more.

column
The Ex is on the radar this summer Everybody I bump into says they’re going to the Ex this year. I’m not just talking about the regulars. Many who haven’t been for awhile say they plan on returning. Yeah, there’s definitely a lot of good buzz out there. No doubt the great weather is helping. You just can’t beat the Ex on a gorgeous day. Anyhow, I’ve received some nice emails and phone calls since my column last week about the CNE, so I thought I’d reply to some of the more frequently asked questions. Q. This is the 135th edition of the CNE. Do you remember what the big attraction was that very first year? A. Uh, I don’t go quite that far back, so this would be just a guess. But given their enormous popularity in Toronto, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was the Rolling Stones first-ever comeback tour. Q. Enough with the nos-
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY talgia, what’s the best new ride, hands down? A. There isn’t one. On all of the new ones everybody has their hands up. And I mean way up. Q. There are minimum height restrictions for kids for all the really scary rides. I was wondering, are there age restrictions for adults on those rides? A. Nope. Sorry to disappoint you. So if your son or daughter asks you to take them on the Apocalypser I’m afraid there’s no way you can back out. You’ll just have to face the music. Q. Is there an age limit for face-painting? A. Yes. Face-painting is for kids between two and 102. And it is strictly enforced. If you’re under two or over 102, you’ll need a note from your parents. Q. The Bandshell has a
real star-studded lineup this year. Which concert are you looking forward to the most? A. That’s a real toughie. I have quite a few must-sees on my list. But if I was only allowed to pick one, I’d have to say the one featuring Yo-Yo Ma and Yo Mama. I always catch them whenever they’re in town. The renowned cellist and the legendary rappers have one of the classic collaboration songs of all-time, Beethoven Pleads the 5th. Q. I’m a strict calorie counter when it comes to my culinary choices. With that in mind, what should my game plan be at the Ex given its menu? A. Bring a calculator. And I mean a huge one. Q. This year’s CNE new food sensation without doubt is the P.I.G. Combo. It features two juicy groundbacon patties, a peameal slice, crispy bacon strips, cheddar, a side order of bacon cheese fries and a
peanut butter and bacon milkshake. What do you recommend for dessert after that? A. One thing and one thing only: the deep-fried Tums – on a stick. Q. Speaking of the P.I.G. Combo, I’m a little worried. I don’t fancy that sort of thing, but I was wondering, can you get second-hand cholesterol sitting next to somebody who eats it? I plan to go with my boyfriend and knowing him, he’ll probably inhale at least two or three. A. Sorry to say there’s no data available for that type of thing, yet. No doubt there will be in the not too distant future. In the meantime, for what it’s worth, I think I got a cavity just thinking about the peanut butter and bacon milkshake. An appointment is essentially undemocratic. It delivers a cut-rate councillor for eight or nine meetings who arrives already beholden to the councillors who supported him or her in the appointment process. And that debt is considerable. The caretaker steps into a six-figure job that will either be abandoned after eight months of lacklustre performance, or parlayed into a potentially long political career by supplying the advantage of incumbency in the next general municipal election. Granted, one expects Mayor Ford will bring to bear his considerable knack for campaigning to help his favoured candidate win the byelection. But that is fair play in any election. And if a moderate or left-leaning candidate wants to take a stab at the ward Holyday has represented for decades – well, the considerable knack for campaigning that forces on the left and centre can muster can enter the game too. That’s fine. Because if we’re going to be playing this high-stakes game, we owe it to everyone – particularly the residents of Ward 3 – to play it fair.

Vanessa McLeod off to junior Pan Ams TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com St. Clair Avenue West-Keele Street area resident Vanessa McLeod, the new Canadian junior national champion in 800 metres, is in the midst of a busy summer. The Purdue University sophomore set a Canadian championship meet record of 2:04.89 in mid-July in Sainte-Therese, Que. The win secured her a second career berth on Team Canada to compete in the upcoming Pan American Junior Athletics Championships starting Friday in Medellin, Colómbia. In St. Therese, McLeod, 19, went into the 800m finals after running three earlier races, including competing in the 1500m finals, determined to win and to make the Canadian team. “I was a little tired after the other 1500m races so I just sat back a little bit then kicked it at the end. When I saw my time, I was really shocked,” said the Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School grad. She was seeded fairly evenly with the runner who came in second, who also competed in the 1500m finals. She is currently ranked
the No. 1 junior female 800m runner in Canada. With the Canadian championship win, McLeod smashed her own Canadian junior record of 2:05:21 set in February when she took the 800m crown in the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Track Championships, which also broke Purdue’s 800m record. Her studies completed in late May, McLeod remained at Purdue to train for about a month after her NCAA win qualified her for the American universities’ regional championships in North Carolina. When she didn’t make the American nationals, she returned home to Toronto to visit family and to train daily with Stephen Strong, her Canadian running club coach. Strong coached her at Father John Redmond where he heads the track program. Before heading to Colómbia, McLeod also represented Team Ontario in the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que., which wrapped up on Sunday. She won bronze in the 800m and placed fifth in the 1500m. McLeod had won the junior Ontario provincial championship in July at York University in both the 1500m
and 800m. Now, the focus is on her first junior Pan Am games. “My goal is to make it to the finals and definitely run 2:04 in the 800m,” she said. Mairelin Fuentes of Cuba set the Junior Pan Am Games women’s 800m record of 2:03.70 in 1997 in Havana, Cuba. Since Grade 9, the Toronto teen has consistently run in the top three in Canada with no major injuries, while remaining on her school’s honour roll, coach Strong reported. “She’s got a good future, exciting trips ahead of her,” Strong said of McLeod. “She has never blown a race. She has never made any mistakes. She always executes perfectly. She’s a very consistent performer.” McLeod is on a four-year full scholarship at Purdue where she is studying health and kinesiology. She wants to become a physical therapist. At present, she is about five seconds off the Olympic 800m standard. Strong expects McLeod will be Olympics’ ready by 2020.

Art Responsibly puts youth art in subway stations Eglinton West one of six stations chosen Justin Skinner jskinner@insidetoronto.com At-risk youth from across Toronto have been given a unique opportunity to beautify the city’s subway stops thanks to a partnership between Arts for Children and Youth (AFCY) and Pattison Onestop. The pilot project, called Art Responsibly, will see the youths’ art replacing traditional advertising posters in a number of TTC subway stops. The initiative came when young AFCY participant Fitzroy Facey raised issues about being responsible when it comes to painting graffiti and other forms of art in the city. “The subway posters were given to us and the young artists erased them and painted over them to express their thoughts on what it means to be responsible by being
artful,” said AFCY executive director Julie Frost. The posters tackle issues such as inclusivity, embracing diversity and shining a positive light on the LGBTQ community.
“
Creativity’s essential for the well-being of the city as well as for the self, so this is a great way for us to archive what people think. – Julie Frost
Professional muralists and youth leaders led painters from six different program locations across the city, including the Art Gallery of Ontario’s Free After Three program, Covenant House Toronto, Our Lady of Victory Catholic School, St. Barnabas Catholic School, St. Dorothy Catholic School and Rockcliffe Middle School. “One really important feature of this program is the posters (the artists) created were placed in the closest stations to where they were made,” Frost said. “These are the
stations these youths use, so they can see their work in public. It fits with the whole notion of empowering youth to be active and constructive social engagers.” The posters each come with hashtags to encourage the public to offer their opinions, with the responses catalogued to help inform future incarnations of Art Responsibly should it move beyond the pilot phase. “Creativity’s essential for the well-being of the city as well as for the self, so this is a great way for

us to archive what people think,” Frost said. The project even offered employment opportunities for some young artists, who took on support and mentorship roles. Youth artist Andrenne Finnikin was one beneficiary of the employment programming, helping to create multimedia posters using painting and photography at St. Barnabas. She said the posters are a good way to empower youth while beautifying the subway system. “It’s a nice platform for young people to express themselves and it’s nice to have art in the subways instead of looking at just another ad,” she said. “It’s definitely something we’re proud of and it was a new experience for many of the youth. Some of them have never painted on a larger scale.” The posters will be up in six subway stations – St. Patrick, College, Eglinton West, Kennedy, Wilson and Runnymede – through the end of the year.

Rail Safety: How safe is our community?
The recent tragic events in Lac Mégantic, Quebec, makes all of us who live near rail corridors worry. What’s in those tank cars? How many people are running that train? Why is it running so slow (or fast)?
Some may recall another derailment in 1979 in nearby Mississauga involving 106 rail cars (some carrying chlorine) – how worried we were then. There have been thousands of incidents since then. In 1989 the Mulroney Conservative Government started deregulating the railroads. Railroads themselves became responsible for their own safety, instead of Transport Canada. Railroads are to provide safety plans to Transport Canada, which makes random inspections to ensure these plans are adhered to. The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) investigates accidents and makes recommendations to improve safety. In 2012 a fatal accident involving a VIA train occurred in Burlington. The TSB made 3 recommendations: survivable engines, automatic braking, and cameras in locomotives. So far the Harper Government has refused to act on any of them. One of the purposes of government is to protect Canadians. The chief purpose of a railway is to make money. There is an inherent conflict of interest in asking railroads to self-regulate their own safety.
Mike Sullivan
The Lac Mégantic rail disaster raises many questions about rail safety. The NDP called for an emergency meeting of the House of Commons’ Transportation Committee (on which I am a member) to review this disaster and make recommendations. Unfortunately we were shut down by the Conservative majority. Here in York-South Weston we straddle CP’s main cross-Canada rail line and watch hundreds of oil cars a day go past our homes. Luckily, so far, accidents on this line have not been in residential neighbourhoods. Ironically, Metrolinx’s plans for the Union-Pearson Express include building a crash barrier between the freight tracks and the Weston rail tunnel, to protect the tunnel in the event of a crash. It would seem that protecting a tunnel is more important than protecting homes and their residents. Recently we asked Transport Canada to meet with the community in York South-Weston to explain how they should feel safe here. Unfortunately the Minister of Transportation’s office informed us that Transport Canada personnel would not be available to speak to the public here about these issues. We ask – why not?

Overgrown vegetation on city streets? Call 311
Get a sneak peek at LRV prototype
The city is asking residents to call 311 to report locations where summer vegetation growth is obstructing traffic signals and stop signs. Callers are asked to provide either the closest address or the nearest cross streets to assist efforts to dispatch city staff to the locations. “To protect public safety, we are asking residents to act as our eyes on the street to help us identify and address situations that are

The first planned LRT line, the Eglinton Crosstown, is expected to begin operating in 2020.
potentially unsafe for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers,” Don Valley Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong (Ward 34), chair of the city’s public works and infrastructure committee, said in a statement. While city transportation services and parks, forestry and recreation staff routinely perform proactive maintenance, this summer’s rainfall has led to more vegetation growth than usual.
“Toronto has a healthy urban forest and we have to manage the impact of the large volume of rain we’ve had this year,” Scarborough East Councillor Paul Ainslie (Ward 43), chair of the city’s parks and environment committee, said in a statement. “This summer our trees and plants are seeing tremendous growth, so we may need to do some pruning to keep things safe for those travelling within the city.”

More e-books at library Macmillan has recently made more than 1,600 e-books available to the Toronto Public Library. Macmillan joins the growing list of publishers, including Random House Canada, HarperCollins Canada and many Canadian independent publishers, making available popular and awardwinning authors to the Library’s expanding e-book collection. The Library’s growing e-book selection will help meet the high demand for this content. There was a 105 per cent increase in e-book usage at Toronto Public Library in 2012 and
this is expected to grow again this year. The Toronto Public Library Board continues to advocate for improved access to e-content from all publishers as many still have not made their e-books available to public libraries in Canada. The Board’s goal is to provide universal access to e-books for all Toronto residents, which is particularly important given the rapidly growing demand for this content. City of Toronto Historic Sites asks residents: WTF? City of Toronto Historic Sites is making use of a cheeky promotional campaign to get millennials/Generation Y interested in local history. WTF? Un t i l t h e m i d d l e o f September, 100 TTC bus shelters across the city are displaying ads showing a

Ilena Aldini-Messina, program supervisor for museum services, said the eight objects chosen for the first WTF? campaign are relatively easy to identify, ranging from
artworks to everyday items, most of which date back to the late 19th century. “The point is to inspire people to want to find out what the images are by doing research or learning about them,” Aldini-Messina said.
