Wychwood Barns Community Association ends Peter MacKendrick Community Gallery lease T h e Wy c h w o o d B a r n s Community Association is ending its operation of the Peter MacKendrick Co m m u n i t y Ga l l e r y a t Artscape Wychwood Barns. The organization’s lease of the 1,000-square-foot, full-accessible space ends Nov. 30. “While we are sad to give up management of the gallery, this move allows us to

focus our resources on other community activities, some of which include St. Clair Oral History Project, “BOO! at the Barns,” the Garden Club, and increasing active outreach to engage the broader community within and outside of the complex,” the organization said in a news release. The community association had operated the gallery since 2008, holding numer-

ous exhibits and events at the location. Artscape is seeking a new operator. The application period is closed and a new operator is expected to be notified this month, with a move-in date of Dec. 1. The gallery is at the northeast corner of Artscape Wychwood Barns, a community cultural hub at 601 Christie St.

Sculptor Blake Ward is pursuing the career he set out to do when he was a child. Asked if he ever imagined his life would turn out this way he said: “Every day. It’s what I always wanted.” He credits his mother who he said was instrumental in exposing him to art and instilling in him this passion of creation. “I knew then that there was only one path for me,” Ward told The Guardian via email from the Arctic. Graduating with a sculpture degree from the University of Alberta, the Yellowknifeborn, Edmonton-raised Ward moved to Paris where he studied figurative sculpture. “I was lucky and was able to study under an excellent teacher for four years and that was the beginning of what I can only qualify today as both a blessing and an obsession,” he said. Ward will be presenting his second solo exhibition in Toronto at Articsok Gallery, 1697 St. Clair Ave. W. from Aug. 27 until Sept. 19. The exhibit will coincide with Ward’s participation in the Sculpture Society of

Sculptor Blake Ward will be exhibiting his work in a solo show in York.

Canada’s 87th annual exhibition, also opening today. He’s inspired by people and when he’s struck with an idea, he just runs with it. “The work is in a continuous state of change all the way to the foundry and even beyond,” he said. Sculptures are built in wax. As they are built, parts are shed and rebuilt. “We never really know what it will look like until it is in the bronze,” Ward said. Ward, an artist and businessman, has galleries around the world, including Chicago,

Montreal, Vancouver and Bergamo, Italy, with plans to expand this year. While audiences change, his work does not. “As with any anthological collection of work, the work encompasses different periods of my artistic development so there are several periods to chose from,” Ward said.

T

hirty years ago this summer, Toronto lost its innocence when an eight-year-old girl named Nicole was abducted from her Etobicoke apartment building. Children didn’t walk to school alone anymore. Parents looked to strangers with suspicion and filled their kids’ heads with dire consequences if they dared roam carefree.

The first Nicole’s Run took place last week to mark the anniversary of Nicole Morin’s long-unsolved missing child case. Though a tragic story itself, the event focused on the positive, offering an opportunity to fundraise for the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (CCCP) and a chance to keep Nicole’s case – and those of other missing children – top of mind in the hopes of generating new leads. After 30 years, police insist hope still exists for answers. Shaun Narine, superour view intendent of Toronto Police 22 Division, told Metroland Media “As with any missing Be proactive Toronto: child, you never stop looking.” The case remains open and in protecting police have been working nonyour child stop since, trying to find some evidence that would help them solve the mystery. Tips are always welcome, no matter how seemingly insignificant or – perhaps by now, after all these years – fuzzy on detail they may be. Nicole’s Run also serves as a reminder that children shouldn’t be afraid, but instead should be taught to be vigilant about their own safety. Society is a much different place, it’s true, but as long as children and parents are educated, innocence need not be sacrificed. CCCP’s website www.missingkids.ca offers tips on child safety and points out that the traditional advice “don’t talk to strangers” is outdated and ineffective in reducing a child’s risk of abduction and victimization. It’s only in the rarest cases that children are abducted by strangers, and more often, child abductions are committed by people who are known to the child. Visit the site to learn more, including how to protect your child against offenders lurking on the internet. Teaching your children these safety tips in a fun way can make the difference between a child who fears the world, and one who stands confidently before it. Practice “what-if” scenarios and get your child’s friends involved. In honour of Nicole, her family and those families that continue to grieve the loss of their missing children, be proactive in protecting yours.

And yes, to answer your obvious question, they’ll even deep-fry the stick. Frosted this or frosted that for those whose eyes are bigger than their stomachs. KickStart gives kids a heads up in soccer skills Toronto FC helps launch the free, city-wide program CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com

party on marlee

It was all about having fun at The Hangar at Downsview Park last Thursday where the full Toronto FC First Team came out to play soccer with more than 200 kids from 15 Toronto Community Housing communities across the city. “This is a lot of fun to be able to spend time with the kids and to see smiles on their faces,” said Michael Bradley, captain of the Toronto FC. He was joined by his teammates to launch the fourth year of KickStart, a free eight-week soccer program for youth aged six to 12. MLSE Foundation, in partnership with Toronto FC, Kia Canada Inc., and Toronto Community Housing launched KickStart, which hires staff and trains youth mentors from under-served communities to deliver the program. as they went off into groups to practise basic skills of the game. “To enjoy it and to have fun,” he said. Greg Spearn, interim president and CEO of Toronto Community Housing Corporation, agreed, encouraging the kids to just have fun playing the beautiful game. “This is the best part of my job,” said Spearn, who addressed the children at the launch event. “I hope you have an amazing time this year.” Brothers Shayan, 11, and Shahvir, 10, were excited about meeting all the professional soccer players, especially Bradley, their favourite player. “The team captain really shows leadership,” said Shayan, who also won a leadership award at his school near Victoria Park and Sheppard Avenue. Abdi, Ayub, and Mustafa from the Mabelle community in Etobicoke all agreed they like watching the Toronto FC because the players work as a team. “They don’t hog the ball,” Abdi said. Mustafa added he liked playing soccer to be with his friends. For more information on the KickStart program, visit www. mlsefoundation.org/How-We-Give/ Signature-Programs.aspx

Home safety tips for seniors Many seniors today enjoy the ability to live comfortably in their homes. With the right supports and assistance, such as the care provided through the Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC), the elderly are able remain at home for as long as possible. While living at home is the desire of many seniors, doing so often comes with challenges. Healthrelated limitations as well as the very real possibility of injury have consequences for those who are of an advanced age. Fortunately, there are some simple things that can be done to decrease the possibility of injury or difficulty at home. 1. Good Lighting As we age, our eyesight often becomes compromised. Medical issues such as glaucoma and cataracts make it difficult to see as clearly as we once did. Seniors often have difficulty seeing in dim light, so make sure that your elderly loved one has adequately bright lighting in their homes. In doing so, you will decrease the likelihood of an unexpected fall or stumble. 2. Non-Slip Flooring While hardwood floors may look nice, they are a frequent cause of slips and falls by older people. As well, tiled or floors that are covered with throw rugs can also pose a safety hazard. To decrease the possibility of falls, make sure to install carpet or nonslip flooring. Also, consider the use of treads on stairs or

Reflections on Billy Bishop Airport After having flown Porter Airlines for the first time this past weekend, there’s no doubt in my mind: Robert Deluce’s little airline flying out of the Billy Bishop Airport would benefit from a jet-sized runway. My trip to Boston and back ran late on both ends: going out, because the little turboprop Dash 8 I was to leave on was laid up with mechanical problems at another airport, and Porter couldn’t wrangle another aircraft in time. And then I bumped again – voluntarily, having missed my connection – because the plane needed to shed some passengers for the wet runway. Weather made for another delay on the way back. Big strong jets in Porter’s fleet would be a benefit, at least a benefit to travellers like me, trying desperately to keep their blood pressure in check as they miss connections and arrive home past bedtime. The question of what benefits – or more to the point impacts – jet aircraft will have on the city and its waterfront

david nickle the city remain open. In 2014, Toronto council decided to keep those questions open, resisting pressure from Porter and PortsToronto (the new name for the Toronto Port Authority) to give a preliminary OK to start work on extending runways and removing the ban on jet aircraft. Council sent the supplicants back to the drawing board before continuing the conversation. The conversation will be coming up again this year and next, and is getting ready to start, as a pair of reports from Waterfront Toronto and PortsToronto offer a checklist of measures to apply to public consultation, public health and the environmental assessment of the jet option. It is quite a list that points to the flaws in the fast-and-loose process so far. It will be interesting to see what council makes of the plan

when it comes forward this year, more than likely without the guidance of our mayor, who has a conflict of interest on the matter owing to his son’s employment at the airport. That will leave a similarly constituted council enjoying a similar level of autonomy to their predecessors in 2014, when former mayor Rob Ford was effectively out of the debate for different reasons. Assuming the proponents of the expansion take the time to get their ducks in a row, things could very easily tilt the other way. But late on Sunday night, riding the brand-new people mover back from the island through that just-opened pedestrian tunnel, I couldn’t help but think that another solution to the Porter dilemma is much simpler, at least on a personal level: next time I fly to Boston, take a TTC bus to Pearson. There are plenty of jets to choose from there.

high-traffic areas. 3. Caregiver Support Having someone look out for the elderly is a surefire way of assuring that they remain safe. If you know of a neighbour, family member, or friend who is in need of assistance, offer to lend a hand. This may include helping with chores around the home that may be difficult or potentially unsafe for an older person. 4. Medication Management Many seniors have various medications that need to be taken on a daily basis, which can lead to error. Taking the wrong medications or forgetting whether the correct dosage has been taken is a very real possibility for the elderly. Keep your loved ones safe by the simple use of pill boxes or similar supports. Also consid-

er a simple checklist or tracking system that can be filled out daily. 5. Assistive Devices Seniors are often in need of assistive devices in order to be mobile within their homes, as well as outside. Wheelchairs, walkers, the use of medic-alerttype tools and similar items can make a considerable difference in the lives of those who need them. The Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre works with a variety of companies that supply these types of items to seniors in need. Contact the CCAC for details. For more information about supports for seniors, contact the Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) at (416) 506-9888 or visit www.healthcareathome.ca

Construction resumes on Gardiner Construction work to replace the deck on the elevated portion of the Gardiner Expressway from Strachan Avenue to Bathurst Street has resumed. During this closure there will be two lanes of traffic in each direction. The construction, which is part of the city’s strategic rehabilitation program for the Gardiner, is expected to be completed by Oct. 31, 2016. The lane closures will

extend beyond the construction zone to accommodate traffic flow and allow the city to set up access routes for the planned demolition of the Dunn and Dowling avenues bridges in 2015 to 2016. The daily closure of the westbound ramp from Jameson Avenue to the Gardiner will be suspended during construction. When the work is completed, the normal closure on weekdays from 3 to 7 p.m. will be rein-

stated. The city is taking steps to minimize disruption to drivers during the highway rehabilitation, including implementing traffic signal timing changes to enhance traffic flow on nearby routes The city is urging drivers affected by the expressway work to consider options such as carpooling, taking transit, cycling to work or travelling outside the usual rush hours.

TTC marks 30 billion transit trips wthe A major milestone was celebrated when it was announced this week the TTC has passed 30 billion transit trips. Long-time rider Grant Scott was chosen as the stand-in customer for the trip that was likely to have been made earlier in the month, according to the TTC. For the honour, Scott received a free monthly Metropass subscription for one year. Despite near-annual raises to fares, the TTC has seen steady increases in ridership for 11 straight years and will likely set another record for total trips taken in 2015. The 30-billion figure represents the number of trips taken dating back to the TTC’s inception in 1921. the TTC pondering TRAVEL ZONES? wisMULTIPLE

BROUGHT TO YOU BY: A publication of

Contest open to Ontario residents 18 years of age or older. Odds of winning depend on number of eligible entries received. A minimum of seventy five (75) prizes will be awarded. Retail value of prizes is approximately $1,750+applicable taxes. Contest closes Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at 11:59pm. To enter and for complete contest rules visit insidetoronto.com/ contests

Integration of the electronic fare system Presto with the TTC won’t be completed until the end of next year, but a prominent transit advocacy group, TTCriders,

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT is concerned how it could affect suburban riders. Unlike the TTC’s current single-zone system, Presto users on services like GO Transit are charged higher fares based on the distance travelled. That has TTCriders worried the TTC, which relies on fares for 70 per cent of its revenue, might be enticed to establish multiple travel zones, which could impact Scarborough, Etobicoke and North York residents who must travel further on average to get to other areas of the city. EXPANDS TRIPS ALONG KITCHENER LINE wGO

GO Transit will boost off-peak rail trips on the Kitchener Line as of early September, the regional transit agency has promised. The move will mean 14 additional trips during the midday Monday to Friday between Union Station and Mount Pleasant GO Station

in Brampton. GO will also increase bus trips between the two destinations. The moves are part of 10-year expansion plan for the GO network which includes boosting the number of weekly trips on the Kitchener line from 80 to 250. THE SOUNDS OF TRANSIT wDOWNLOAD

Want the sounds of the TTC on your smartphone? You can now download ringtones imitating the transit commission’s most iconic alerts. A Reddit user posted notice of the ringtones that include the three-note opening and closing door chimes heard on subway trains, not to mention streetcar gongs and even the TTC’s “Boodle-oop...boop... boop” alert sounded before an announcement is made. You can download individual tracks or the entire TTC Tribute Ringtones album via Bandcamp.com Rahul Gupta is The Guardian’s transit reporter. His column runs every Thursday. Funeral, wake planned following death of Zombie Walk A bullet has been put through the brain of the Toronto Zombie Walk & Halloween Parade, as organizers have cancelled the undead event due to lack of funding. “We’ve been doing it for a dozen years and it’s sad, but it might be time to move onto new projects,” said Stefania Zanini, chief spokesperson for

the volunteerSaturday run event. The group lost about $10,000 in grants from provincial tourism agencies and despite crowdfunding efforts, it just wasn’t enough to keep the walk alive. The cost to run a successful Zombie Walk, Zanini said, is between $40,000 and 50,000.

aug

HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com

Last year the walk managed to corral 15,000 zombies to groan and moan down the streets of Toronto. “If that’s the way we end that’s a beautiful way to end, with 15,000 people sharing a common interest and a walk,” she said. If the walk returns next year, Zanini still wants to stay true to the event mandate to keep it a free event. To honour the cadavers that

have swarmed the streets of Toronto for the past 12 years in cringe-worthy zombie makeup and blood-soaked attire, there will be a funeral and a wake for the event on Saturday. Mourners can meet at noon at the Royal Cinema, 608 College St. “The carnage reaped upon the city shall never be forgotten and that is why we encourage you to bring photos,

!

stories, and other ghoulish memories for our coffin,” according to a statement on the Toronto Zombie Walk’s Facebook page. “It’ll be a celebration of both life and death,” Zanini said. She said if the Zombie Walk is put to rest for good, the city will wholeheartedly miss the event because it brought together people of all races and backgrounds.

As one of the oldest business communities in Toronto, Weston Village is home to small businesses, historic buildings and an extremely civic-minded community. The neighbourhood will soon be home to W Towns, a modestly-priced development of 48 townhouses by First Avenue, slated for occupancy in May 2016. Each of the three-storey town homes will feature open-concept kitchen, living and dining on the first floor, three plus bedrooms on the top floors, three bathrooms throughout and an underground parking spot. Buyers looking for their first home used to have to look north for moderately priced homes. Located south of the crossroads where the 400 meets the 401, W Towns is an inexpensive way to break into the housing market in the city, with homes starting at $399,900. W Towns has the added benefit of being located just blocks from the new Union

Pearson Express, so residents will be able to get downtown in just 12 minutes. Touting proximity to local shops, the longstanding weekly farmers’market, and a number of schools and churches, W Towns is the ideal place to call home in the city. W Towns is surrounded by plenty of green space, from the Humber River Trail and the three large parks in Weston Village, Memorial Park, Cruickshank Park and Weston Lions park, the spacious courtyards in-between each of the blocks of townhouses on site.

The townhouses are more modern in design, while still trying to incorporate the Weston Village feel. The architecture, designed by Patrick Markus Luckie of pml.A, will tie in to the look of the Federal Building apartments located on the site of the old Weston Road post office, also owned by First Avenue. The sales centre is open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. For more information about W Towns, visit www.wtowns.ca or call 647-345-0937.
