Vanessa McLeod, 19, competed in the Junior Pan Am Games representing Canada this past weekend finishing third in the 800m race.

The St. Clair Avenue and Keele Street resident finished with a time of 2:09.04 behind fellow Canadian and race winner Jenna Westaway who clocked in at 2:06.94.

McLeod also competed in the 4 x 400m race with Westaway, Marie-Colombe St. Pierre and

Sage Watson. The Canadian relay team finished second behind the United States with a time of 3:41.53.

Stephen Strong, her Canadian running club coach, expects McLeod will be ready to compete in the 2020 Summer Olympics. Currently, she is on a four-year scholarship at Purdue studying health and kinesiology.

Police seek suspect in home invasion

Police are looking for a suspect after a couple woke to find an intruder in their Avon Avenue home Monday.

Police said the woman saw the suspect standing over the bed around 4:25 a.m. in the Rogers and Weston roads area.

The suspect entered the home through and unlocked door, snatched a purse and then entered the bedroom, police said.

The suspect, who was chased by the woman’s husband, made off with keys, wallets and cash.

48, faces four charges in fraud case wMan, A man faces four charges after an elderly woman was allegedly defrauded of more than $36,000.

Police allege that over a one-year period a man befriended the senior and “systemically defrauded her by using her debit and credit cards for cash advances, alcohol purchases and trips to local strip bars.”

Mark Ninchritz, 48, of Toronto is charged with fraud over $5,000 and three counts of using a credit card obtained by crime.

Connected for Success launches in Scarlett-Dundas LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Children sang the praises of a pilot project offering affordable broadband internet, subsidized computers and software to Toronto Community Housing residents at a special launch event at Cooper Mills in the Dundas Street West and Scarlett Road-area last Thursday.

“It’s so awesome,” said Dahlia, 8, of the Rogers Youth Fund initiative ‘Connected For Success’ program, during an event that featured cupcakes and T-shirts for the kids.

“I love computers,” chimed in Aaliyah, also eight.

Residents at Cooper Mills were some of the first to sign up for the program, which has been made possible with support from Compugen and

Microsoft Canada, and will be rolled out to all Toronto Community Housing (TCH) complexes in the city. The program, designed to make the World Wide Web accessible to more youth, has the potential to reach as many as 150,000 low-income residents.

As part of the program, TCH residents will have access to Rogers Hi-Speed Internet service with speeds of up to 3Mbps and usage allowance of 30 GB for $9.99 monthly.

Rogers Communications, in conjunction with Microsoft Canada and Compugen, is providing the option of purchasing a computer for $150, which will come pre-loaded with complimentary standard productivity and educational software as well as access to technical support.

As a father of three teen boys, Rob Bruce, president of communications at Rogers Communications, said he understands how crucial the internet is to staying connected with peers while keeping up with homework.

“We know that roughly two million Canadians do not have internet at home,” Bruce said. “Roughly the

same amount don’t own a computer. It’s a digital world in which digital skills and access to the internet are the foundation needed to succeed. Connection to the internet is the gateway to staying on top of homework, working on group projects and communicating with teachers.”

Parkdale-High Park MP Peggy Nash called Connected to Success a “terrific program” for a community of “hard-working people, who contribute to their community.”

Violet, 11, said she was impressed by the program.

“I think it’s a great way for kids to play on computers because some kids don’t have one,” she said.

School’s in: Lots to look forward to

ew schools, new programs, new teachers, new classmates. There’s lots going on at both the Toronto public and Catholic school boards as the new school year begins on Tuesday.

In our special feature in today’s edition, we look at what’s new in the schools.

The need for a school in the recently built Scarborough neighbourhood was huge, and parents and students alike are excited about the opening.

But education is more than bricks and mortar. It’s about people and programs, of our view which there’s lots to be excited about this year.

For example, a number of Changes Northview Heights Secondary abound local School students will be sharing what they learned at this month’s and city-wide Adobe Voices digital media arts summit in California. They were the only students from Toronto to attend the summit, which featured students from 23 countries sharing art projects aimed at making social changes in areas such as bullying and cultural awareness.

Also, students at a number of schools including Blacksmith Public School will be using technology to improve their math skills by playing the computer game Prodigy.

Less high-tech, but every bit as valuable in the real world students and their families live in, is a bicycle repair and maintenance program at Central Commerce Collegiate Institute.

At Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School, new principal Derek Chen admits he has some big shoes to fill in replacing Maria Pereira. “She’s a legend,” Chen said. “I’m pretty honoured to follow in her footsteps.”

While students have all this and more to look forward to, a big part of back to school is also showing off the new fashions to classmates. Balanced view on outsourcing Re: ‘Outsourcing not an obvious solution,’ yorkguardian. com, Aug. 8 The thinking exhibited in this column was quite balanced.

There are other questions too: Does “managed competition” have the potential to keep large, multi-national companies from unduly exploiting the citizens of Toronto when it comes to garbage collection?

Would we be in a better position to know the real costs of garbage collection if we were to maintain an area of the city where our own employees collect our garbage? How will we know the true costs of totally ‘outsourcing’ garbage collection?

I hope that the decision makers are not blinded by an ideological commitment to what might seem like an easy decision. This could end up costing us much more than we could anticipate.

Humber River Hospital receives $10-million boost from Apotex FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Humber River Hospital (HRH) is closer to its $225-million fundraising goal to build North America’s first fully digital hospital thanks to a $10 million donation from Apotex Inc. The multi-million dollar gift was announced last Thursday at the site of the new hospital at Keele Street and Wilson Avenue, which is under construction and expected to open in the fall of 2015.

The donation by Apotex, the largest Canadian-owned pharmaceutical company, will be spread out over 10 years in support of HRH Foundation’s capital campaign.

In recognition of the gift, the new hospital’s emergency department will be named Apotex Emergency Centre.

The emergency department is expected to see more than 114,000 visits in the first

year.

“My relationship with this hospital goes back more than 30 years,” said Jack Kay, CEO of Apotex Inc. and past HRH board chair. “My two youngest sons were born at the Finch site. Later, our involvement grew with our partnership evolving in many stages over the years.”

Kay encouraged other companies to follow in Apotex Inc.’s footsteps, noting they can’t go wrong by giving back to what’s important to Canadians – affordable health care.

“Jack Kay has always been a strong advocate and leader in the creation of North America’s first fully digital hospital,” said Eddy Battison, chair of HRH Foundation board of directors. “Not only is Jack a past hospital board chair, but very early in the campaign he stepped up to serve as co-chair of the capital campaign.”

Proposed uniform colours strike a nerve Controversy erupted last week when TTC workers rejected a proposed uniform re-design resembling the colours of the Montreal Canadiens.

The outcry was so much it led TTC CEO Andy Byford to say in a statement that a posted picture of a blue, red and white striped golf shirt was only a “proposal” and no final choice has been made.

Byford said he preferred a “predominantly” blue uniform, a colour deeply associated with the Canadiens’ arch-rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Thousands of bicycle owners have their rides stolen in Toronto every year, and now Mary-Margaret McMahon can add her name to the list.

An online database allows cyclists to report ‘door prizes’ which occur when a car door is suddenly opened in the oncoming path of a cyclist.

Now a struck rider can register an incident at www. doored.ca, and post details on the severity of the accident, the licence plate of the car involved and other information.

According to site creator Justin Bull, the purpose of the database is to provide a reliable tracking system for door prizes citywide.

A petition is calling for separated bi-directional bike lanes on Harbord Street and Hoskin Avenue.

There are currently painted lanes on both sides of Harbord, which turns into Hoskin east of St. George Street, but the Cycle TO petition seeks fully separated lanes, which it says will encourage more riders and reduce fatalities.

So far, 151 people have signed the petition, but some commenters warn separated bi-directional bike lanes are dangerous since they are too constrained to evade collisions.

The city plans to install separated bike lanes on Harbord-Hoskin in 2014.

Tonks knew both Petrie and her late husband Fergie when they ran their shop on Weston Road, first established in 1926 by her father-in-law, selling sheet music and repairing television sets.

“They were more than just shopkeepers. They were community-based outreach workers,” said Tonks, noting some customers would come in to get their TV fixed and for some life advice.

Tonks himself got to really know her when she served as a board member and then president of York West Meals on Wheels, which is currently known as Humber Community Seniors’ Services (HCSS).

“Her community service was a springboard off of what she used to do in the shop,” said Tonks, crediting Petrie for recognizing the need to help seniors in Weston. “She’d say, ‘You can’t escape getting old.’ She was one of the cornerstones for HCSS – Meals on Wheels to begin with and evolving into a broader range of services. She was a real sparkplug for change.”

Lynn Cameron, the former executive director for HCSS, first got to know Petrie in 1989 when she first became a board member for York West Meals on Wheels.

Cameron agreed with Tonks, noting under her leadership as president and past president,

she helped secure funding to move HCSS from 1901 Weston Rd. to 1501 Weston Rd. Then again, she was very involved in helping move HCSS to its current location at 1167 Weston Rd.

And Petrie gave back to the community – something she taught her children to do through her actions.

“She was such a great role model and had lots of integrity with everything she did,” Karen said.

Petrie leaves behind her sister Edna and children Jack and his wife Marnie, Jeanne and her husband Ron, Karen and Darryl and his wife Leslie.

She was a grandmother of nine and great-grandmother of eight.

Traffic signal boxes getting makeover A city beautifying project will see traffic signal boxes wrapped and adorned with public art to discourage graffiti and illegal postering.

When the Outside the Box initiative is completed, the entire surface of some 2,200 metal boxes, which house the controls to operate and coordinate traffic signals, will be covered in a wrapping made from a special coating intended to make graffiti

removal easier.

Two types of wrapping were created for the project, containing designs from renowned Canadian graphic artists Gary Taxali and the late Moira McElhinney.

A jury selected panel of 11 artists through the StreetARToronto initiative (StART) will also hand-paint 20 traffic control boxes between now and Oct. 25 at various locations. The designs, accord-

ing to city public works chair Denzil Minnan-Wong, are intended to foster an artistic sense of city identity as well as combat vandalism.

MLSE KickStarts inner-city soccer program again Fannie Sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Goeiva Collins is looking forward to making new friends and learning new skills as part of a free soccer program organized by Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) Foundation.

The 12-year-old took part in KickStart last year, the first time the program was offered, and is eager to get back on the playing field.

“It’s fun, you get to exercise,” said the Islington and Finch avenues area resident, adding he hones his skills with his dad and brother and also plays on a rep team.

The MLSE Foundation, in partnership with Kia Canada Inc., launched the second year of KickStart, a free eightweek soccer program in 12 Toronto Community Housing communities, Wednesday, Aug. 21 at the Kia training ground at Downsview Park.

The program is set to start the week of Monday, Aug. 26.

The program, open to youths aged six to 12, aims to build soccer skills, selfesteem, fair play and leadership in the 240 youngsters taking part this year.

Toronto FC was on hand to run drills and offer advice to the budding soccer stars, something Goeiva saw as inspirational.

“It gives us encouragement,” he said of seeing professional soccer players at the event, adding he’d like to play for Toronto FC down the road.

Last year, 10 Toronto Community Housing communities were involved with KickStart, and this year two more communities have been added. Coaches from the communities were trained by professional soccer players, and the idea is to run KickStart in each community for eight weeks.

Two practices are held each week, along with one game on Saturdays. Games are played at Amesbury Park at Keele Street and Lawrence

Avenue in the west end, and at Birchmount Park near Kingston and Birchmount roads in the east end.

Housing. “It focuses on education, team work, friendship, camaraderie. I don’t want it to stop. I want it to be an everlasting program. We have 350 Toronto Community Housing communities and 12 are here. I hope to expand it to include all of them.”

Sh e v o n T h o m p s o n , KickStart co-ordinator, said the response from last year’s program was so positive they decided to add more communities this year.

“It’s breaking down barriers,” he said. “It’s bringing different communities together.

They are learning a different sport they wouldn’t normally play. Usually they play basketball. Having Toronto FC here is a big benefit.”

Toronto FC player Jeremy Hall, who co-spearheaded KickStart from the players side, said the program encourages kids to stay active.

“When I was this age, my mom signed me up (for soccer),” said Hall, who grew up in Tampa, Florida. “You are running around and staying healthy. If I’m here next year I would love to do this again, I think it’s great.”
