There’s work for all: Weston couple celebrates winter New skills for Change office with ice sculpture wants to help you find yours DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com

A Weston couple is not hiding indoors when there’s glorious winter to enjoy. Dave Nerenberg and Nina Silver have put up a six-foottall monolith made of ice in their front yard as a way to celebrate the season. “I made it because it’s Canada and it’s winter and I just wanted to do something to celebrate the time of year. I knew it was going to be cold. We all tend to spend a lot of time indoors,” said Nerenberg, a gardener by trade. The sculpture is about 20 inches wide and six inches deep with a flat top. To make it, Nerenberg made a wooden form, with design help from his wife, lined it with plastic and filled it with water. He left the form outside, elevated, for a few days and then with a help of a friend, raised it on his front yard. The plastic helps to remove the form easier.

... it’s Canada and it’s winter and I just wanted to do something to celebrate the time of year. – Dave Nerenberg

Silver added four coloured balloons made of ice to the bottom of the sculpture. This is the couple’s second attempt at making an ice sculpture. Last year’s attempt, Nerenberg admitted, didn’t work out as well. The York resident got the idea for the sculpture from a friend who lives in Markham who’s done this for several years. “I thought I could do one that’s as good, if not better. It’s friendly rivalry,” he said. The sculpture on Queen’s Drive has been standing for a few weeks now. How much longer it stands depends entirely on the weather, Nerenberg said.

ilipino immigrant Ceferino Guzman has gone full circle in his five years living in Canada. At first, he was trying to avoid getting stuck in a survival job and benefited from an organization that helped him find work that allowed him to use some of the qualifications he had earned back home. Now, armed with personal experience and a conviction to help other newcomers, Guzman works where he is able to help new immigrants find their way in Canada. Without non-profit organization Skills for Change helping him along, he said he would be doing today what most immigrants do when they arrive in Canada. “I would maybe be in a factory or maybe I would be in a coffee shop, which is a typical employment area for those who don’t benefit from information and support from settlement organizations like Skills for Change. They get into survival jobs and they get stuck there,” he said. His employment counsellor at Skills for Change, Norma Bernal, called Guzman an ideal client. “It’s good he was open minded,” she said. Guzman was a human resources manager for a top company in Manila, Philippines, and when he arrived here, he was aiming to find work in HR, ready to accept an entry level position. But Bernal, who is also Filipino, advised him to look beyond HR work, so Guzman applied for a position to become an admissions counsellor at Anderson College, a private career college in East York. He was hired and soon after was promoted and now does external relations

Filipino immigrant Ceferino Guzman, left, sits with his employment counsellor Norma Bernal at the opening of Skills For Change’s new The Stockyards Mall office at Weston Road and St. Clair Avenue West on Friday. at the college, co-ordinating with newcomer settlement organizations like Skills for Change to help immigrants make better lives for themselves. Guzman and Bernal have remained friends over the years and are colleagues with the same goal. “We share the same goal of helping newcomer immigrants successfully transition,” Guzman said. “Thankfully, my job allows me to do that so now I’m a partner to Skills for Change.” So, when Skills for Change was celebrating opening its new location last Friday at The Stockyards Mall at Weston Road and St. Clair Avenue West, replacing its former Dufferin Mall location, Guzman was there sharing laughs with Bernal. While Skills for Change is focused on helping newcomers find work, the Stockyards location is a

Write us

H

ow can Toronto optimize the legacy of the upcoming Pan Am Games? What opportunities are there to create lasting change in our communities as a result of hosting the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games this summer? In this space last week, we wrote of how the Pan Am Path, an 84-kilometre trail being built to connect communities across the Toronto region, could create a living legacy for the city. It’s not the only example. Consider the facility construction and renovation that have taken place in Toronto because of the Games: The Aquatics Centre at the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus. The track and field facility at York University in North York. The renovated Etobicoke Olympium. The Pan Am / Parapan Am Fields at the University of Toronto’s St. George campus. Several sites in CIBC Pan Am Park located along the shores of Lake Ontario, including Exhibition Place, Ontario Place and the West Channel. We can make use of those our view facilities in terms of promoting physical activity and Take advantage enabling community particiin local events. There of all the Games pation are significant opportunities offers to Toronto to impact the lives of many Torontonians. Consider that there’s an entire neighbourhood – the Canary District – in the West Don Lands being constructed that will serve as temporary home for athletes this summer. Following the Games, that neighbourhood must integrate into the surrounding community and the city as a whole. How that transpires can serve as an example for other neighbourhoods when they experience a major development. And it’s not just bricks and mortar examples. There are opportunities for local businesses. There’s the opportunity to learn more about another culture being represented at the Games. There’s the volunteer experience. This isn’t about whether having the Games in Toronto is a good idea or not. We’re past that point. This is about making use of what the city will have after the Games and building the best possible legacy. There is potential to enable positive change on a grand scale. Learn more about the Games. Learn more about the facilities and parks being built. Understand how you as a resident of Toronto can take full advantage of Games facilities to create a better lifestyle once the Games are done. Anything less would simply be a wasted opportunity.

Hats off to your Family Day celebration A friend of mine, Who Shall Remain Nameless, is going to a special gala on Monday called Hats Off To Family Day and she’s beside herself with worry. Nameless is her maiden name, by the way. She made me swear under oath not to reveal her married name. For what it’s worth, I also had to sign an affidavit and have it notarized. It embarrasses me to say, I actually had to Google ‘affidavit’ before I agreed to do anything. But please don’t tell her that. Anyhow, the invitation said it was a come as who you are party (not to be confused with a come as you are party) and anyone not attired in such a manner would be refused entry. No wonder she was on edge. She says she finds it tough enough to pin down who she is at the best of times, but on Family Day it’s even more difficult because her relatives have seen her wearing so many different hats over the years.

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY First off, the majority of the crowd knows her as mom so showing up in a mom hat would be a good choice. Ditto for a mommy hat. Throwing on her proud grandmother hat would be a nice idea. She has that hat on a lot these days. She’s also known as Nana by many in the family, so being decked out in her nana hat would work just as well. So would sporting a daughter hat. She’s been a daughter the longest of any of her many identities over the course of her life. She’s a sister as well, which she’s been for only two years less than she’s been a daughter, so donning her sister hat would make a lot of sense. She’s been a niece, for considerable time, so a niece hat would be fitting, even if said hat doesn’t quite fit like it used to once upon

a time. She’s known as aunt and auntie so an aunt hat or an auntie hat are both worthy possibilities. Additionally, she’s a sister-in-law, so a sister-in-law hat would be well received. And she regularly reminds everyone that she’s also an aunt-in-law and auntie-in-law, so nobody would be too surprised if she showed up in her familiar aunt-in-law hat or auntie-in-law hats. Her prospective hat list is long. “You’ve got to help me, Jamie. Please. Who should I go as?” “Are you going to make me swear under oath one more time, sign a new affidavit and have it notarized, before I tell you?” I grumbled. “Of course. And I’d expect you Google ‘affidavit’ again, too,” she giggled. “Hey, how do you know I did that?” “What can I say? I read your column. Just don’t let that get around, especially

on Family Day. I have a reputation to uphold. Several actually. But back to the matter at hand, which hat should I wear?” “Why not put on all of them? On top of one another. In the order that they’ve been a part of your life. When you all doff your respective hats in honour of Family Day, you’re sure to be the hit of the party.” “That’s not half bad, even for you. So, do you promise that’ll happen?” “I’m not swearing under oath again, signing yet another affidavit and getting it notarized, if that’s what you’re looking for,” I sighed. “I hear you. I’ve put you through enough already. So forget the guarantee. How about this: Any chance you could you just Google ‘affidavit’ one more time? You know, for old times’ sake?” Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. transit loss on Scarborough RT wpower Scores of Scarborough RT riders were forced to switch to emergency shuttle buses over the weekend following an extended outage on the aged transit line. The TTC blamed “electrical power loss” for the hours-long shutdown of the line from Kennedy to McCowan RT stations which lasted much of Saturday. This year should have marked the opening of the Scarborough LRT, which would have replaced the RT. But with plans switched to building a subway extension it won’t be until at least 2023 when Scarborough residents have a new transit option. Until then the TTC hopes to extend the shelf-life of the RT and should it eventually break down beyond all repair, replace its operation with buses.

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT TTC union jobs. The mayor was greeted with chants of “keep transit public” from workers at the TTC’s Hillcrest maintenance facility when he toured the site Monday. At issue is an agreement signed with the province giving the TTC the right to operate the planned lines, including the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, but leaves design and maintenance responsibilities to the provincial government. OF SNOW BLOCKS BIKE SHARE STATION wPILE

For days, a mound of snow has blocked access to a Bike Share Toronto station. Last Thursday, TTC board member Alan Heisey first tweeted a photo of the snow-covered station at the northeast corner of King Street and University Avenue, which looked like it was covering at least half of the available bicycle docks where members of the bike

share pick up or drop off their rented rides. Heisey then tweeted another picture Monday showing the snow had still not been removed. City councillor Pam McConnell confirmed through Twitter the snow was left by a private contractor. STATION TO GET INTERNET ACCESS wSPADINA

Spadina Station will soon have access to subway Wi-Fi, the TTC announced last week. Museum and St. Patrick were the latest stops connected to the list of stations already offering the TCONNECT wireless network that riders can access for free from their smartphones. Spadina is set to go online next month. Last year, service provider BAI Canada pledged to have the downtown subway loop completed in time for the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games this summer

Play staged in English and French >>>from page 1 inform them, let the young people be humanized and see this story and take in something that happens in real life.” The play, while informative, isn’t meant to preach, Cano said. “There’s no preaching, no judgement on it. The audience will just see it as it was written by a playwright who spoke with child soldiers who had escaped and who was informed and greatly touched and inspired by young children she befriended.” The Sound of Cracking Bones will be staged at Theatre Passe Muraille, presented by Pleiades Theatre, first in English Feb. 14 to 28, and then in French, its original language, March 3 to 7. Winner of the 2009 Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama, the play is about two child soldiers in a harrowing escape towards freedom and a nurse named Angelica (Cano) who cares for the children and later testifies on their behalf

before a commission. Written by celebrated Quebec playwright Suzanne Lebeau, the play has been performed in seven languages worldwide. This will be the English-language premiere of the play, The same three actors perform the French and English versions of the play. Cano, a Canadian-born actor of Peruvian descent and multilinguist, says a Spanish-language

version of the play is possible in Toronto as well. The timing of the Toronto staging of the play is appropriate as today is Red Hand Day, which draws attention to the fates of child soldiers and is a call to action against it. Cano said her character is the voice of the adults speaking to adults on behalf of children. “She’s simply telling a story from the perspective of an

adult who heard, received and took care of one of those children,” Cano said. She said the play will showcase a world to a Toronto audience that is far removed from us and one that is difficult to imagine. “It’s not a sit down, popcorn and candy, gummy bear movie kind of affair,” she said. “You’ll be moved. You want to be touched by truth and great story telling. That’s what the experience will be about.” While it’s not light entertainment, Cano said, the play is not a desperate and depressing show either “It’s t ra n s f o r m a t i v e, it’s informative, it’s a very humanizing experience for all involved,” she said. The Sound of Cracking Bones is directed by John Van Burek and also stars Caity Quinn and Harveen Sandhu.

Some of the city’s top young musicians will be performing a symphony concert of classical music from around the world, including music by such greats as Rachmaninoff and Elgar. The gala concert will feature winners of the ninth annual Toronto Sinfonietta Concerto Competition for Young Musicians. The concert is on Saturday, Feb. 21 at St. Michaels College School Centre for the Arts, 1515 Bathurst St. The concert starts at 7 p.m. The competition was supported Saturday by Toronto Sinfonietta and the concert will be conducted by its artistic director, Matthew Jaskiewicz. Predictably, Toronto council didn’t want to trouble itself this week with more questions about the Scarborough subway plan. Councillor Josh Matlow dared them to do otherwise, submitting five fairly uncomfortable administrative inquiries poking holes in council’s plans to hike taxes and build an expensive threestop subway along a route that had been slated for a fully funded seven-stop light rail line. Questions asked, questions answered, council decided, voting to approve a motion from Deputy Mayor Glenn De Baeremaeker to receive the inquiries and not send them along to Mayor John Tory’s Executive Committee. T h e q u e s t i o n s w e re answered, by city manager Joe Pennachetti as the rules require. Given those answers, one might have thought councillors would be interested in a little more talk. Matlow wondered about the sunk costs that the city will be responsible for paying on

ing of Tory, carried the day and the matter is shelved. After the vote, De Baeremaeker pointed out that many of the questions Matlow posed had been answered in 2013 when council made the leap from light rail to subway. But things change. Among other things, De Baeremaeker is proposing another $150 million for a fourth station on the line. Matlow is not the only one uncomfortable with this. Deputy Mayor Denzil Minnan-Wong voted against the subway in 2013 and still thinks there are problems. But that’s not the same thing as wanting to reopen the matter. The public wants to get on with things. There is one more question, though: are Torontonians tired enough of debate to sign a blank cheque for a transit plan that’s looking more and more like a bad fit? Guess we’ll find out.
