Just as critically acclaimed artist Jean-Michel Basquiat found inspiration through music, sports and the urban environment, a class of Grade 6 students from Rawlinson Community School did the same as they drew in their sketchbooks. They visited the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) last Wednesday to see the special exhibition featuring the artwork of the late American artist, which recently opened and runs until May 10. “This is a really bright group,” said Nancy Sicchia, the Grade 6 extended French teacher at the Dufferin Street and Rogers Road >>>grade, page 11

“Nobody has come forward,” said Proctor, noting some of the gravestones have since been moved to a secure location. He added that he’d like to see a memorial garden and cenotaph to be put on the site. Parishoners recently had

NDP leader Thomas Mulcair speaks with Weston business owners DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com Federal NDP leader Thomas Mulcair sat down for a chat with York-South Weston small business owners over Somali cuisine to hear about their troubles. The Feb. 11 visit to Wiff Restaurant on Weston Road was one of a number of stops for the leader of the official opposition to small businesses across the GTA in preparation to this October’s federal election. Locally, he spoke with approximately 15 business owners, telling them he
would drop small business tax from 11 per cent to 9 per cent. He also listened to their problems, saying he would take the business owners’ issues to Ottawa. Host and Wiff Restaurant owner Asha Ahmed, whose business will celebrate four years this summer, said she felt she was listened to by Mulcair. “This is wonderful. We need to have somebody who will listen to what we have to say,” she said. She added local MP Mike Sullivan, who was present for the roundtable discussion, has been vocal in supporting
the businesses in the area. The business owners talked about a number of issues that affect them, such as the costs of tax, utility bills, insurance, transportation, which are all rising, and disruptions like the LRT construction along Eglinton Avenue decreasing customer traffic. “I learned it’s tough times, it’s very tight times for small business owners in the GTA,” Mulcair said of his visit. “They’re being hit by all levels of government, whether it’s increasing taxes, their property taxes, their sales taxes that they have to

r. Mayor goes to Ottawa, and with him a pitch for those in our nation’s capital to consider his SmartTrack transit plan, the key plank in John Tory’s run to become mayor of Toronto. With the city already on shaky budgetary/financial footing – Toronto is to borrow from itself to fill the 2015 budget hole, and city manager Joe Pennachetti is looking at “new” revenue tools to fund growth – all levels of government need to step up. Especially when considering how much money Toronto sends to Ottawa and Queen’s Park. Tory’s Tuesday and Wednesday itinerary includes meeting with Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair, federal Transportation Minister Lisa Raitt and several Toronto MPs. These are discussions that must happen, something Tory started with Prime Minister Stephen Harper in December, shortly after being sworn in as mayor. Whether Harper drops the writ our view before the fixed Oct. 19 federal election date is uncertain, but it is time to start talking transit with Talk transit our local MPs – and it’s their job to bring our concerns and ideas with those to Ottawa. seeking votes Transit has been one, if not the main municipal issue for nearly a decade. With that comes the necessity to keep that discussion going on a daily basis. Not just during elections. Transit issues stretch beyond Toronto because the city is an economic generator for the entire country, and congestion is an economic killer – the social and economic costs across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area are estimated at $6 billion annually. The federal leaders have been in Toronto recently – making announcements, shaking hands – so it’s obvious interest in Canada’s largest city is there. SmartTrack will not solve the entire issue; however, getting people around the city more quickly on transit will help take some cars off the streets and quicken commuters’ trips. Tory has often repeated his position that the federal government needs to sign on to a 10-year agreement to fund transit in big cities across the country, and that SmartTrack should be next on the prime minister’s list. It is now our responsibility to make sure that position extends to our doors, when federal hopefuls start knocking. It is up to us to make sure transit – not just Tory’s SmartTrack – stays top-of-mind leading to the federal election.

We should pay more for services we enjoy To the editor: I recently moved to the Roncesvalles area from Burlington and quite honestly was astounded at the low taxes residents are paying in Toronto. Our home is valued at $920,000 and we are only paying $3,600 in taxes. In Burlington, we would be paying almost double that amount and I feel the services are better in Toronto. The only way for the
city to achieve the money needed to maintain the infrastructure and have convenient and affordable public transit is to raise our taxes. If a young family can afford to spend these large amounts for their homes, they can certainly afford another $500 in taxes. We, Torontonians, have a deal and we must start playing catchup. Gary Donald
Praise for Guardian reporter To the editor: In my opinion, David Nickle is the finest municipal affairs journalist in Toronto. He gets to the heart of issues quickly and clearly, helping us to separate wheat from chaff in an environment of city hall double speak. Nickle zeroes in on issues and expresses personal views – views I
almost always find myself agreeing with. Congratulations to The Guardian as well for, during the municipal election, permitting Nickle to endorse Olivia Chow while, on the same page, the editors endorsed John Tory. Such editorial respect is praiseworthy. John Ellis

Some remaining gravestones moved to safe place after five go missing >>>from page 1 everyone to enjoy,” said Dave Bennett, chair of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic School parent council, in an email update to parents and neighbours. In the meantime, the Toronto Catholic District School Board provided an update on the status of the construction project for the new St. John the Evangelist Catholic School and Childcare Centre. It noted the demolition of the school is now complete. Revisions to the previously approved site plan are still underway to address site constraints as a result of the gravesites uncovered. While no historical grave sites were found, the board is continuing to work with the Archdiocese of Toronto and the office of the Ontario Registrar of Cemeteries to determine the cemetery’s relationship with the school site. A meeting with the school community’s design committee has been set for next month.

Grade 6 children bring sketchbooks to AGO >>>from page 1 school, who accompanied the diverse group of 16 students. Leading up to the field trip, Sicchia noted the students learned about art and social studies together in class. “I always pair the two because I feel it makes the art more meaningful,” she said. “And they have a really strong social conscience.” It seemed like a nobrainer to take her students on the free excursion to the AGO where they could see how Basquiat, a famous artist by the age of 20, explored issues of race, identity and social injustice through his paintings. Carolyn Swartz, coordinator of school and teacher programs at the AGO, gave Rawlinson students an interactive tour, encouraging them throughout to draw in their sketchbooks inspired by Basquiat’s works. “They were really a

remarkable group,” said Swartz, noting younger students tend to understand abstract paintings better as they tend to draw more abstract themselves. “And we often do something hands on to make that personal connection about the works and what they mean to them.” She added that coming to the art gallery is a social experience for students where they can connect with their friends through art and feel comfortable to talk about it as they become lifelong museum goers. The students seemed to enjoy their experience that day. “His work was very unique and different,” observed Jovin, who particularly liked the different textures and colours Basquiat used in his paintings. “In art, you can symbolize things in your drawings.” Fellow classmate Marie agreed.
“I think it’s really good,” Marie said. “I like to come back again here, a lot.”

Riding president: nomination will be democratic The president of the federal Eglinton-Lawrence Liberal riding association says its candidate for the upcoming election will be chosen in a democratic fashion. “This is a democratic society. The Liberals believe in the democratic process,” said Rocco Piccininno. Piccininno said lawyer Ma rc o Me n d i c i n o a n d Mississauga-Brampton South MP Eve Adams are the only two people so far who have
expressed an interest in running for the Liberal nomination in the riding, but it’s still early. Piccininno said the Liberal candidate will be chosen at the riding association’s next annual general meeting. The AGM has not yet been scheduled and Piccininno didn’t provide an approximate date. Adams made news earlier this month when she defected from the governing
Conservatives and crossed the floor to the Liberals. She still represents the MississaugaBrampton South riding. On Feb. 11, she confirmed that she would be seeking the Liberal nomination for the Eglinton-Lawrence riding, drawing criticism from longtime Eglinton-Lawrence Liberal MPP Mike Colle. Joe Pennachetti’s long goodbye There must be something liberating in the long goodbye. Just look at Joe Pennachetti, Toronto’s long-suffering and ever-efficient city manager, who agreed to hang around for a few months after his planned retirement to help Mayor John Tory make a budget for 2015. Pennachetti’s been good to his word – directing first one staff budget and then another, once the political realities of provincial-municipal relations became apparent. Last week, Pennachetti delivered that second one with a neat fiscal flourish, forgoing a loan from either province or bank to “borrow” money from Toronto’s own capital investments. The plan raised some eyebrows but got Tory out of a pickle, made by the failure of his fledgling administration to negotiate a good deal with the provincial government to soak up $86 million in lost revenue in time for March. It is unlikely that if Pennachetti were planning on staying longer than a month or on air rail link electrification wupdate For the first time in more than a year Metrolinx will provide a public update on efforts to electrify the Union Pearson (UP) Express air rail link. The provincial transit planning agency has already promised to convert nearly all of the GO rail network from diesel to electric within a decade. The first step of that transformation is supposed to be UP, but neither Metrolinx nor the Ontario Ministry of Transportation have confirmed when it will happen, or how much it will cost to electrify the fourstop line. Next Tuesday, Metrolinx electrification director Karen Pitre will take part in a question and answer session hosted by the Roncesvalles-Macdonnell Residents Association from 7 to 9 p.m. at Fern Avenue Public School. WEEKEND CLOSURE CONSIDERED wALLEN
The city’s transportation services department is recommending closing the southern section of the Allen Road Expressway over a
david nickle the city so he would have delivered his third piece of parting advice as he did. Toronto, he said, needs to look at new sources of revenue, and it needs to do it now. The City of Toronto Act is under review, and with strong council support it is possible the province might allow Toronto to find sources of revenue beyond the ones that it has now: specifically, a sales tax. That new source of revenue could make a dramatic difference in the city’s finances – allowing it to deal with its crushing public housing and transit responsibilities, and manage everything else on its own terms. Shelley Carroll, who served as budget chief under former mayor David Miller, is going to bring forward a motion on the plan. Tory, meanwhile, is united with his budget chief Gary
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT weekend in April to allow for re-location of massive tunnel borer machines used in Eglinton Crosstown LRT construction. A report to the city’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee recommends closing the Allen between Eglinton and Lawrence avenues April 17 to 20 to allow Metrolinx work crews to lift and transport a pair of 81-metre-long machines to just east of Eglinton West subway station where they will continue digging the Crosstown’s underground section to Yonge Street below Eglinton. The report also recommends closing off Allen between Sheppard and Lawrence on the same weekend for maintenance. The committee will debate the proposed closure at its meeting Monday. launched TO COMPLETE LRTS wPETITION
An online petition calls on Mayor John Tory and the
Crawford in thinking it a terrible idea. On Tuesday, Tory told reporters that first he wants to find efficiencies and get money from the federal and provincial government. New revenues should only be considered after all that’s failed. Tory’s nervousness is understandable, but it’s not acceptable. Toronto Council is on its way to approving a budget that is built on short-term profligacy, paid for over time. It’s like raiding your kid’s college fund to get a new car: if you have any hope for pleasant holiday dinners and visitors at the retirement home, you’re going to have to spend the next few years cutting other things you may need – or go get a better job to pay it back in time. Or you could do both – cut back on frills and get some more money. That’s the gist of the parting advice from the guy who knows.
