Project Water up and running for the summer FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com

The 11th annual Salsa on St. Clair street festival will sizzle in York Saturday, July 4 and Sunday, July 5. Inspired by Miami’s Calle Ocho festival, more than 100 artists are expected for the free two-day event along St. Clair Avenue, between Winona Drive and Christie Street, which will include live music, dance lessons and Latin food. Presented by TLN Telelatino, the Hillcrest Village Business Improvement Area, and the City of Toronto, Salsa on St. Clair has grown from a local event launching in 2005 to one attracting hundreds of thousands of attendees over two days. Salsa on St. Clair will run Saturday from noon to 10 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m.

With the sun blazing down and music pumping, dozens of volunteers loaded hundreds of thousands of water bottles

into trucks last Wednesday to be delivered to those who call the streets home. Now in its 16th year, Project Water will provide more than 170 social service agencies, outreach providers and

homeless shelters with some 300,000 bottles of water and 3,000 summer survival kits in an effort to keep those living on the streets hydrated and safe during summer heat. An Engage and Change initia-

tive, Project Water was founded by Jody Steinhauer, president of The Bargains Group on Caledonia Road, south of Lawrence Avenue. Donated by Nestle Waters Canada, the water was put into

trucks situated in The Bargains Group parking lot to be distributed to the homeless in the city and Greater Toronto Area later that day and throughout summer. >>>INITIATIVE, page 6
