York’s Gwenda Lambert had been an active marathoner and dragon boater up until three years ago when an injury forced her to stop competing. However, her love of sports would not allow her to simply sit on the sidelines as a spectator. Instead, she still gets involved, except instead of running in the events, she helps run the events. And the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games are just the place to do it, as she’s one of 23,000 volunteers helping to ensure events happen smoothly for both the athletes and the spectators, and she intends to continue doing so for other local sporting events as well. >>>VOLUNTEERS, page 12

Arts, nature, sport and play unite in mural at Cruickshank Park Pan Am Path installation at York underpass

It’s time to break out your tackle and lures again in Mount Dennis. The Mount Dennis Community Association is hosting its third annual Party by the Pond, a fishing event, on Saturday. The event is at the Topham Pond at Eglinton Flats from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A fishing licence is not Photo/Courtesy

The mural titled ‘In Hazel’s Eye’ by Dan Bergeron and Gabriel Specter is displayed at the underpass in Cruickshank Park as part of the Pan Am Path Art Relay.

York might be bypassed on the sport events side of the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, but it did benefit indirectly in one big way – a Weston stop along the Union Pearson Express, said a community advocate. “It’s been a huge windfall for us,” said Laura Alderson, co-ordinator of the Mount Dennis Business Improvement Area and vice-chair of the Weston Village Residents’ Association. “As a result of the stop in Weston, a number of businesses are interested in

legacy lation at the underpass in Cruickshank Park. “We’re happy that we did because it’s a lot more accessible to the public,” Mckintosh said. Friends of the Pan Am then connected UrbanArts with Toronto public artist Dan Bergeron, who worked with fellow artist Gabriel Specter to come up with the idea for the mural. After researching the history of the neighbourhood,

they focused on arguably the city’s most significant natural disaster that impacted both the park and the commmunity: Hurricane Hazel. “We were looking at the birth of a park through the eye of the storm,” said Bergeron, adding the Toronto And Region Conservation Authority was formed as a result of the catastrophic weather event. UrbarArts helped facilitate feedback from the community and the artists also talked with residents who were alive when Hurricane Hazel hit in 1954.

Titled “In Hazel’s Eye,” the mural is a vibrant piece of work spanning the two walls and the roof of the underpass. “We worked on it together for about 16 to 18 days,” said Bergeron, who hoped the mural would appeal to all generations and become a conversation piece for those using the path. “For some people, it’s a nice surprise. They don’t expect it.”

pan am games economics coming to the area.” T h e Un i o n Pe a r s o n Express travels between Union Station and Lester B. Pearson International Airport, with stops at Bloor GO Station and in Weston. The roughly $450-million line opened June 6 and takes 25 minutes to travel from one end to the other, with trains departing every 15 minutes. While the line wasn’t built solely for the Games, it will help with transporting athletes, coaches and spectators

to and from the airport and downtown. “The Union Pearson Express is one of the biggest economic spin-offs (of the Games),” Alderson said. “The Weston (Community) Coalition was leading the charge and we demanded a stop. We were the only ones who got a stop in the entire city. Now, more developers are looking at Weston.” As for spill-over traffic from the downtown due to the Games, Alderson doesn’t think York will be adversely affected, with business operating as usual. And while it would have be

“incredibly amazing” to have some events in York, at least the community will be able to participate by cheering on the torchbearers when the Torch Relay travels through the area today, she said. “Of course, we’re thrilled that the Pan Am Torch Relay will be coming through Mount Dennis on Thursday, when the torch will be carried by none other than blind hockey player Mark De Montis, founder of Courage Canada. That will be very special,” Alderson said.

CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com Combining the power of art and sport, the Pan Am Path aims to create a living path across Toronto running through several communities including the Weston-Mount Dennis neighbourhood. To help bring the path to life, Friends of the Pan Am Path organized the Pan Am Path Art Relay that involves engaging the communitybased leadership to deliver cultural programming and installations at 14 locations along the path. That includes a stop at Cruickshank Park where a mural installation was recently completed with UrbanArts selected about two years ago to be the lead community organization to “activate” the Pan Am Path in Weston-Mount Dennis. “We tried for a variety of different locations,” recalled Marlene Mckintosh, executive director of UrbanArts, noting they initially scouted a bridge at Eglinton Flats and an area near Weston Lions Arena. T

he Pan Am Games are here and they are taking place right now, so it’s time for Torontonians to stop complaining and start showing off our great city to the rest of the world. We all need to look beyond the personal inconvenience and embrace the bigger picture. Yes, those HOV lanes are annoying but it will only be for a short period of time. The Games are bringing a lot of positives both economically and culturally. Let’s celebrate that. In today’s edition we’re looking at the Pan Am Games’ impact on businesses, sports groups and people in our communities. One of those positives was this weekend’s celebration on the Prince Edward Viaduct that saw the Pan Games Torch Relay ignite a our view Am community cauldron and the lighting up of the Luminous Veil. The Share your lighting on the veil is one of the permanent legacies brought support and many about by the Games which also excitement include a number of world-class athletic facilities. Also, athletes are thrilled to have the opportunity to show their stuff for hometown fans. It’s a rare opportunity for them, and one they will cherish. As Toronto sports fans, we need to share their excitement and show our support for our athletes. As Torontonians we should also be embracing the chance to show those visiting from the 41 countries competing in the Pan Am Games that we are a great city in which to live, work and play. The Toronto Region Board of Trade looks at the Games as a chance to further establish the city as epicentre of global business. “From the business community’s perspective, we have 350,000 people coming into the GTA. These are folks who if they like what they see, will be coming back, and telling their friends. So hopefully we can look at this as a point in time where we can really showcase what we’ve got,” said TRBOT president Janet De Silva. With athletic events now underway, there’s plenty of enthusiasm from volunteers and athletes. And if sports isn’t your thing, there’s no end of social and cultural events to enjoy during the Games. Enjoy! We have all of that information available to you at www.insidetoronto.com/panam

Dealing with Pan Am gridlock a step at a time I wish I could tell you I had a gold medal solution on how to deal with the inevitable Pan Am Games gridlock, but the best I could come up with is just grin and bear it. I get the feeling that won’t get me in the running for the silver either. Or bronze. Or tin for that matter. But hey, that’s my game plan and I’m sticking to it. traffic angst With Friday night’s opening ceremonies just a hop, skip and a jump away and traffic angst already reaching a fever pitch, all I know is carpooling with co-workers isn’t going to make it disappear. Nor is SUVpooling. Nor rickshawpooling. Nor is Pan An Games office pooling of any kind. That includes being picked up by the corporate limo. Or the corporate helicopter. Or the corporate blimp.

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY Everybody hopping on public transit isn’t the answer, either. But I’m not going to lose any sleep over the impending congestion. We all knew the moment it was announced Toronto had been awarded the Games that getting around wasn’t going to be a walk in the park. So I’ve decided to do the next best thing. I’ll make it a walk in the ravine instead. With a walk across a bridge thrown in, and a walk through a field, a walk on a front lawn or two, a walk down several alleys, a walk on the sidewalk and a walk through an occasional parking lot, too. Wherever it takes me and whatever it takes to get there, I’m walking to work during the Games, sports fans. Nothing’s going to stand in my way.

You won’t hear me joining in the expected road rage chorus no matter how chaotic things get on our streets, highways and byways. I’m going to let my feet do all the talking. making it fun Who says getting there is half the fun? I’m going to make it all the fun. My strategy is to take a different route every day of the Games. What’s more, I’m going to make things up as I go along. So that means you could see me head off the beaten path one day, then head back on the beaten path the next. It’ll all depend on my mood. I might take the underpass or the overpass. Or I could go under the overpass or over the underpass. I may go up hill and down dale or just as easily go up dale and down hill. You never know. I might stop at the junction or just as easily start

at the junction. Or I may just avoid the junction all together. I could travel hither, thither and yon, or yon, thither and hither. Or vice versa. Or versa vice. And what if I come across two roads diverging in a yellow wood, you ask? No sweat. I’m not going to worry about which one to choose. Or which is less travelled than the other. I plan to take both. Many times. Not even a fork in the road will wipe the smile off my face. If I come across one, I’ll scoop up that spoilsport without even skipping a beat and recycle it along the way for good measure. Same goes for a knife and spoon. So let the Games begin and the traffic, too. I’m ready for both. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. There’s good news for motorists who use roads in the former city of York: local traffic conditions aren’t anticipated to change much during the Pan Am Games, July 10 to 26, or during the Parapan Am Games, Aug. 7 to 15. However, drivers who commute downtown or on any of the city’s highways should expect delays beyond York. The province anticipates approximately 250,000 visitors will come to Ontario for the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, most of whom will be in the Greater Toronto Area. Games officials are asking anyone who can avoid driving at heavy traffic periods to do so, such as by working from home, changing their shift time to off-peak hours, or taking transit.

pan am games traffic Officials hope for a 20 per cent reduction in local traffic to make way for Pan Am Games-related traffic. A 20 per cent traffic reduction is needed to maintain nearnormal commute times, officials said. The greatest increase in traffic volume is anticipated for the Gardiner Expressway and the Don Valley Parkway as well as the downtown core where there are a number of games venues. The province has installed high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes on most major highways. There are no HOV lanes on the Hwy. 401 stretch from Hwy. 427 in the west to Warden Avenue in the east. The HOV lanes rules are in effect until Aug. 18, from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. HOV lanes take up one lane of existing traffic lanes in each direction. York drivers heading west should be aware of two venues in and around Etobicoke’s Centennial Park as they may increase traffic volume in that direction. Higher traffic volumes can be expected around the Centennial Park BMX Centre, 256 Centennial Park

Rd., July 11, and around the Pan Am Bowling Centre, 5555 Eglinton Ave. W., July 22 to 25. Drivers who head north should plan for higher traffic volumes near York University, where there is a pair of Games venues. The area around the Canadian Tennis Centre, 1 Shoreham Dr., will see heavier traffic volume July 10 to 16, while the nearby CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium (Ian MacDonald Blvd.-Ottawa Rd.) will experience heavier traffic July 21 to 25, Aug. 7, and Aug. 10 to 14.

TEMPORARY HOV LANES Temporary HOV lanes are open to: w accredited Games vehicles used to transport athletes, media, technical officials, etc. w motor vehicles with three or more occupants (until July 27) w motor vehicles with two or more occupants (from July 28 to Aug. 18) w emergency vehicles w public transit w licensed taxis w airport limousines (on provincial highways only) w electric vehicles with green licence plates (on provincial highways only)

Volunteers support athletes >>>from page 1 “Because now I’m not running, and I’m not doing those sorts of things, I do want to be able to volunteer for some of the half-marathons or marathons that we have here,” the 51-year-old Scarlett Road resident said. “There was that time when I did my first half-marathon... You hit this wall at 17 or 18 kilometres and then you have these people that you don’t even know that are cheering you on. That’s what we’re doing for our athletes.” The life coach had kept an athletic life, but said it was volunteers who helped her reach her athletic goals. Lambert said she wants to support Canadian athletes. Additionally, she said the Games are a good way to show off Toronto and the country. “It’s an international event,” she said. “It’s a good way to show off Toronto. We’ve got a great city. I love Canada, I love being Canadian and this is a great opportunity to show how fabulous we are.”

Gwenda Lambert at the Pan Am Games BMX Centre.

Lambert will be a Games marshal at the Centennial Park Pan Am BMX Centre on Saturday. Among her possible duties is greeting people in front of the venue, directing them to where they need to go, giving directions and helping them find seats. She’s also volunteering at the opening and closing ceremonies, July 10 and 26, respectively, and a day at the Mississauga Sports Centre

Breaking up really is hard to do david nickle the city “Breaking up is hard to do,” suggests the biggest reason for Toronto to stay together is precisely for that reason: re-establishing Toronto’s old municipal boundaries, or indeed new ones that might be more rational from a 21st century perspective, would be a big job. The question is, do the problems Toronto has now warrant that kind of work? If we were talking a year ago in the dying days of the Rob Ford administration it would be an easy one to answer. The shotgun marriage of municipalities had descended to such a dysfunctional state that suburban Toronto had elected Ford to its top job. And although the mayoralty has passed to steadier hands, it is too soon to say whether the wounds of amalgamation have significantly healed. It is probably also too soon to say that they haven’t healed,

or that they won’t. But as the Fraser Institute’s report notes, other municipalities have managed the split, and Toronto might too. If we were to do so, best not follow the example of Montreal, which ended up with a jumble of small municipalities and a new regional government. We would need some other model that took the lessons of history and the realities of the present into account. In the meantime, it might also be healthy to recognize that there exists the simple possibility of separation: that the bike-riding, latte-sipping denizens of the downtown core might be able to debate in a different room from the suburban, fiscal conservatives of the old suburban communities, and each might elect a mayor according to their needs and aspirations. Sometimes, there’s nothing to spur compromise in a relationship like the serious contemplation of its end.

YOUR WEEKLY CROSSWORD

Its future was once in doubt, now Bike Share Toronto has announced plans to expand its operations. The once cash-strapped bike share program that was handed over to the Toronto Parking Authority last year now has 4,000 members. This week it announced Metrolinx will contribute $5 million to double the bike share’s offerings to 2,000 bikes and 160 docking stations by the end of 2016. Under the terms of the deal, the new rides will appear not just in Toronto but in other Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area municipalities where there are currently no bike share stations. downtown BIKE LANE EXPANSION APPROVED It appears Toronto council will approve expansion of bike lanes recently installed on Adelaide and Richmond streets. The painted lanes were added last year as part of a pilot project. This week, a majority of council is expected to vote to support

w

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT a staff recommendation to extend the Adelaide and Richmond lanes west to Parliament Street. If the decision is approved, construction will take place following the 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games. In September, the city’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee is expected to hear back from staff on the prospects of converting temporary painted lanes on Simcoe Street to permanent from Front Street to Queen’s Quay. TRAFFIC SIGNS FOR QUEENS QUAY wNEW

More traffic signs will appear at the new Queens Quay in an effort to make the re-configured street more understandable to befuddled drivers. The roadway opened up last month following years of construction with expanded sidewalks, a new cycle track and streetcar ser-

vice moved to the median. With all the changes and the subsequent confusion it has created for some, Waterfront Toronto announced it will add Do Not Enter signs so cars don’t enter the streetcar right-ofway. In addition, the agency has added even more signs along Queen’s Quay to get people used to the street’s new layout. More changes are being studied. YOUR MANNERS ON TTC DURING GAMES wMIND

In an effort to promote transit etiquette during the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games the TTC has released several short online videos starring its infamous Morphs. The colourful characters mime examples of “courteous commuter” behaviour, from proper disposal of a newspaper to keeping one’s bag off the seat. See the videos at www.facebook.com/ TorontoTransitCommission Rahul Gupta is The Guardian’s transit reporter. His column runs every Thursday. Reach him on Twitter: @TOinTRANSIT

LAST WEEK’S ANSWERS

DIVERSIONS

Those of us who’ve been in and around Toronto and its constituent municipalities the last couple of decades probably don’t need the Fraser Institute to tell us what terrible problems amalgamation caused. Before 1998, Toronto was six cities: North York and Scarborough and Etobicoke sprawling to the north and east and west, the tiny municipalities of East York and York huddling on the edge of old, urban Toronto. When then-premier Mike Harris and his municipal affairs minister Al Leach announced plans to amalgamate us all, everyone in Toronto not connected with the governing Progressive Conservative party knew instinctively it was a bad idea. It wouldn’t save money. It would make governing these cities of neighbourhoods more difficult, not easier. It would, we were sure, be largely unpleasant. We were, in the main, right. And now the Fraser Institute, in a study cutely subtitled
