TTC pledges better off-peak rides on busy bus, streetcar routes RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The TTC is pledging improved crowding conditions on 33 busy bus and streetcar routes during off-peak travel periods. The routes in question will see more frequent service, shorter wait times and offer riders a far greater opportunity to get a seat outside of the usual rush hour times, promised TTC chair Josh Colle, who was joined by Mayor John Tory and Etobicoke North Councillor Vincent Crisanti for the announcement. Co l l e s a i d t h e m ove reverses past service reductions to off-peak service through TTC budget cuts mandated during the mayoral term of Rob Ford, which resulted in regularly crowded buses and streetcars and more discomfort for riders.
“
We’re addressing crowding standards and moving toward more comfortable and customer-friendly levels. – TTC chair Josh Colle
“I think we got to a point where the previous administration was saying just cram as many people onto a bus as possible and it will take care of itself,” said Colle during a press conference Monday at Finch Station, which has six bus routes slated to receive better off-peak service as of September. “By implementing this service improvement we’re addressing crowding standards and moving toward more comfortable and customer-friendly levels. We’re
improvements in york The service improvements will be implemented on the following routes in York, to take effect in September: 7 Bathurst (bus) 35 Jane (bus) 52 Lawrence West (bus) 63 Ossington (bus) 89 Weston (bus) 512 St. Clair (streetcar) listening to our loyal and very patient customers.” The new service will be funded through a $95-million budget boost made by city council earlier in the year for the TTC’s annual operating needs, and includes previously announced commitments for better all-night bus service and an enhanced 10-minute-or-better network. The funding commitment also funds the TTC’s recent move to make service completely free for kids. Currently the TTC’s offpeak loading standard for frequent service routes is to carry more riders than seats – articulated buses large enough to seat 46 have an acceptable standard of 53, for example – a move that was made simply to save money following the 2012 cuts, admitted TTC deputy CEO Chris Upfold. That will change as of September. “This move today is to say it doesn’t actually makes sense to have a different crowding standard based on the frequency of service,” said Upfold.

Dr. Norman Gunn was determined to help others, longtime friend says Obituary: Weston podiatrist a forensic expert DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com
R
etired Weston podiatrist and Second World War veteran Dr. Norman Gunn was a determined man who put his greatest efforts to helping others, particularly fighting injustice. Gunn died on July 4 at age 92. He is survived by his wife Dorothy. “He’s an extremely determined person on every single level of his life. He was determined to live, he was determined to serve, he was determined to help, he was determined to heal and he was determined to love everybody,” said Suri Weinberg-Linsky, who had known Gunn as a neighbour and as a customer of her Squibb’s Stationers store the past 20 years. “Even in as much pain as he was in, and you could tell he was in pain, in the last few years, there was so much determination in that man.” Gunn was a devout Christian and member of the Malton Bible Chapel who had a great affinity for Jewish people and a love of Israel, which is one of the reasons he and Weinberg-Linsky, who is Jewish, connected so well. fought racial hatred Gunn had been a member of Shomrim, a group dedicated to fighting racial hatred. “He served in the war and having seen what the Jews went through in Europe and other things, he was very committed to making sure it never happened again,” Weinberg-

Forensic podiatrist Dr. Norman Gunn, retired in March 2009. Gunn died July 4 at the age of 92.
Linsky said. Gunn did not live a typical life. Born in Etobicoke and raised in Weston, he was expelled from high school after being blamed for a fellow student’s theft of school books. He joined the Canadian air force and served during the Second World War in what is now Sri Lanka, and then in Egypt. He suffered debilitating injuries and illnesses during his combat years. The Dengue fever, brought on by a mosquito bite, caused his hands and the bottoms of his feet to waste away. The fevers would return regularly for the next 60 years. Gunn met Dorothy on his way home to Canada during a stop in Britain and they got married. They came to live in Canada. During their honeymoon in Niagara Falls, Dorothy injured her foot. While his wife got treated by a podiatrist, Gunn asked the doctor about his own foot problems, and the doctor

knew immediately the cause was his returning fever. Gunn became inspired and decided to become a podiatrist himself, something he went on to do for the next 57 years, finally retiring at age 85. The retirement was unwanted, but unavoidable as his illness caused his spine to disintegrate. ‘the gunn method’ In the 1970s, he began a career in forensic podiatry when Ontario’s chief forensic pathologist asked him to identify a murder victim whose foot had washed up on the shores of Lake Ontario. Gunn was given boots and shoes belonging to missing males. Using various techniques, he was able to identify the victim, evidence that was later used to convict his killers. He began working on several cases, including identifying a female murder victim whose torso and leg had been found. In addition to developing the
Gunn Method, a technique for measuring feet, Gunn’s forensic expertise became sought after by police forces, including the RCMP and FBI, as well as across North America and in Britain. One of the most notorious cases he worked on was known as the Yom Kippur Murders, which occurred on the Jewish holiday in September 1974 in Connecticut. The case would go on to span four trials over 12 years. Defense lawyers for the man accused of killing his former in-laws argued a Satanist drug dealer who had committed suicide weeks after the murders was the actual murderer. But after exhuming the drug dealer’s remains and performing numerous tests, including using beef blood to re-enact footprints found at the murder scene, Gunn proved the drug dealer was not responsible. beloved neighbour When not giving evidence in court, Gunn treated people’s foot problems and had many clients in Weston, WeinbergLinsky said. He was a great neighbour and beloved in the community, she said. “He was put on this earth for a reason. He served his purpose and passed the torch to as many people as he could,” she said. “I will miss his smiling, upbeat nature.” He was predeceased by his son Trevor Norman Gunn. He is grandfather to Christine Biggar (John), Stephen Gunn, Dylan Gunn, Sharon Heymans (Henno) and Judith Gunn (Tracy) and great-grandfather to Allison, Sarah, James, Rebekah, Brayden, Elaina, Bethany, Michaela, Sidney, Lorize, Julian, Michael, Caelan, Mason and Hudson.

W
e like the enthusiasm, goodwill and optimism Toronto’s Pan Am Games appear to have generated. But we must stress this is a time for prudence and caution as it relates to the Olympic Games and the city considering a bid. With the Pan Am Games portion of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games complete, what were once merely isolated whispers of a future Olympic bid for our city have grown noticeably louder – and in fairly fast fashion. As a concept, a Toronto Olympic bid is not an outrageous one. It really isn’t. Reviews of the Pan Am experience are largely positive. While there would be work needed to bring facilities up to Olympic standards, there’s been a good start made with the Pan Am/Parapan Am our view Games facilities. Also, the city’s and cultural diversity Objective review ethnic make Toronto an ideal showof Pan Am Games piece for a global event. And as the Pan Am Games the first step have shown, these kinds of events can serve as an important catalyst for needed infrastructure improvements that serve the community at large well after the Games have left town. But... one thing at a time, people. First, let’s have a proper assessment of the Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games – which aren’t even over yet. This review should provide relevant, objective information that can help inform not only an Olympic bid decision, but also ongoing aspects of life in the city, particularly as it relates to traffic and transit. Also, Toronto has been down this Olympic bid route before. The two most recent bids being the one for the 1996 (which went to Atlanta) and 2008 (which went to Beijing) Games. The bids alone are a significant undertaking. It’s worth examining what happened in those instances. The post-Pan Am Games euphoria for Toronto is understandable. Indeed, it’s better than the alternative. But it will take more than euphoria to fuel a legitimate Olympic bid. The city must assess its needs and capabilities. So let’s rush to the finish line, not to the starting gate. We all need to take a deep breath, and understand just what something like this would entail before we decide it’s the right course of action.

There’s a holiday on Monday? Seriously? Well, once again the civic holiday long weekend seems to have snuck up on everybody. It’s been a fixture on the calendar for a long time now, but just can’t seem to get on the public’s radar. The fact that it’s simply known as the civic holiday probably isn’t helping much. Its catchier handle here in Toronto, Simcoe Day, and one would assume more marketable one, never caught on for some reason. But it’s summer for heaven’s sake. The hottest part of the season, too. Shouldn’t that alone be enough to inject some serious pizzazz into the occasion, no matter what you call it? Anyhow, if it’s caught you by surprise, not to worry. There’s still plenty of time to make plans and lots to see and do in and out of the city. Here’s just a small sample:

Showdown in Spadina-Fort York It is going to be a hot time in Spadina-Fort York this summer and fall. Two of Toronto’s highestprofile progressive pols, Olivia Chow and Adam Vaughan, will be facing off in the newly minted riding. Vaughan, a former broadcast journalist and city councillor, is the incumbent of sorts; he has held the vanishing federal riding of Trinity-Spadina for a year, winning it for the Liberals in a byelection necessitated by New Democrat Chow’s departure to run an unsuccessful mayoral bid. It wasn’t a great surprise when Vaughan took the byelection. Indeed, voters in the NDP-supporting riding could have been forgiven for not realizing they weren’t voting NDP again when they elected Vaughan. Several of his colleagues privately wondered why he hadn’t joined Thomas Mulcair’s team, given all that. But Vaughan threw in with the Liberals for a pragmatic reason: in the spring of 2014, Justin Trudeau seemed the
david nickle the city best bet to replace Stephen Harper and the Conservatives in government. Things appear very different in 2015. It’s not trending well for the Liberals, and the fortunes of Mulcair’s New Democrats have risen considerably. If the trend in polls continues, Vaughan will have to rely principally on his own record as a local representative – which is not inconsiderable. Chow, conversely, will be riding an orange wave propelled further by the profile she built during the 2014 mayoral campaign. She didn’t win, and didn’t, in the end, even run a terribly effective campaign. It was an honourable defeat. And there is that orange wave. In most elections, the NDP policy book shows up as a utopian document no one seriously thinks has a chance of being implemented. But this
time, promises to fund child care and public housing and transit infrastructure carry the weight of possibility. It will be a hard fight, for that. A year ago, Vaughan was a serious catch for Trudeau and the Liberals. On Tuesday, he made it clear he still is. “Olivia Chow has never given me a free ride in this city and I’ve prevailed,” Vaughan told reporters. And that much is true. He took over Chow’s seat on council when she left for Ottawa by beating her preferred candidate: now-city councillor) Joe Cressy. And the new riding concentrates Vaughan’s support, and contains polls where Chow did not do as well in her bid for mayor. Why
 $15/hour federal minimum wage
New Democrats believe that Canadians who work hard and play by the rules should be able to make a decent living. That means a minimum wage that helps workers and their families make ends meet. For New Democrats, that means setting a minimum wage that helps keep people out of poverty and reduce inequality—our goal is to reach $15 an hour by 2019. Currently provincial minimum wages range in Canada from $9 to $11 an hour, but some 820,000 people working in federally-regulated businesses (such as transport, communications, banks, etc.) are not covered by these provincial wage laws. Tom Mulcair’s New Democrats believe that the federal government can show leadership and set an example for provinces to improve wages across the country.

Income splitting serves only the top 15% of Canadian families
Middle class families are working harder but falling further behind. Instead of helping, Stephen Harper is handing a big gift to those who already have the most. Tory urges caution on Toronto Olympic bid Basking in the afterglow of a successful Pan Am Games, Mayor John Tory urged caution before a decision is made on whether Toronto makes another Olympic bid.
With positive public perceptions of the Toronto region’s hosting of the Pan Am Games as well as the record number of medals won by Canada, chatter has risen about Toronto throwing its hat in for a shot at the 2024 Summer Olympics. But while figures such as Canadian
Olympic Committee President Marcel Abut have enthusiastically voiced their support for Toronto 2024, Tory said more study will be required before the city can endorse a bid. “We’re getting ahead of ourselves here, there are no letters being

The romantic comedy is not autobiographical, Sadowski said, but it takes some influences from his life. It’s about a man in his mid-20s who has everything going wrong for him, and struggles to make a romantic connection. “It’s about how love and romance in the real world is a lot more awkward than we usually get to see in the movies,” the filmmaker said. “I was just trying to show how I felt.” Sadowski said he’s humbled that the film has resonated so well with the people who have seen it. “For other people to feel the same way, it’s so reaffirming and magical at the same time,” he said. Readers will be happy to know that Sadowski succeeded in his reallife romance. He’s now married and has two children. The indie film received support from Telefilm Canada and has a distribution deal. On July 23, it became available across Canada on iTunes, Rogers On-Demand, Shaw On-Demand, Bell On-Demand and Air Canada flights. The film runs 82 minutes.

Paralympic swimmer takes role with Canadian team’s staff DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Chelsea Gotell is a bit jealous. The three-time Paralympic swimmer and five-time Paralympic gold medalist has competed around the world, but never once at home. “As a retired athlete I’m pretty jealous,” said Gotell, waiting with a
crew of Pan Am athletes to purchase tickets for the Toronto 2015 Parapan Games. “I never got to compete on home soil, to have this awareness-building opportunity, not for sport in Canada but for Para Sport. This is absolutely ginormous.” Gotell is participating in the Games that begin Aug. 7 as a
member of Team Canada’s Mission Staff. “I’m the athlete mentor for the whole team,” she said. “I’ve done this in London and in Socchi. I’m glad to support the athletes with whatever they need, whether it’s help with the pressure or they could just be asking for chocolate milk.”
On Tuesday, she was on hand to help encourage Torontonians to buy tickets for the events. According to TO2015 spokesperson Neala Barton, so far the Parapan Games have sold 50,000 out of 200,000 tickets. The Games open at the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium Aug. 7 and continue to Aug. 15.
prepared or being readied for my signature,” said Tory following a press conference at Finch station Monday. Before a decision is made Tory promised city council, the public, organized labour and other stakeholders will have a chance to weighin on a potential bid. A full review of the Pan Am Games, which ended Sunday, will also play a part in determining whether the city, which lost out on previous bids for the 1996 and 2008 Summer Games, goes ahead with another Olympic aspiration. Even with a mid-September deadline looming for cities to formally register a bid for 2024 – or as in the case of Boston, withdraw from consideration – Tory insisted he was in no rush, and more concerned with the successful staging of the Parapan Am Games, which get underway in August. “There’s a lot of work to do, starting with a successful Parapan Games and then a consultation process as extensive as possible,” he said. TTC deputy CEO Chris Upfold said an Olympic bid wasn’t on the transit commission’s radar at the moment, but could generate badly needed investment in transit should one succeed. “I think you would need an awful lot more investment in transit,” said Upfold. “Olympics are often a good way of driving that investment.
On hold with 311? Let Toronto artists’ music entertain you The City of Toronto has launched Music 311, a new initiative that brings the music of Toronto artists to the 311 information phone system. “This new way to hear music recorded by local artists is a great forum for us to continually showcase the very talent that makes us a vibrant music city,” Mayor John Tory said in a statement. Music 311 has been launched to coincide with the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games and features music from Toronto artists when 311 callers are on hold. Respite care for seniors Caregiving support over the summer months With the last weeks of summer underway, many of us are gearing up for our last jaunts to the cottage, road trips and similar vacations. When the summer lasts for only a mere few months, it makes the need for a seasonal getaway even more important for so many. While the family heads out to the cottage or beyond, however, there are often questions about where elderly relatives will stay while the family is away. Many seniors are cared for by their adult children. The Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) provides respite care to caregivers who want the peace of mind knowing that their elderly loved ones are taken care of while the family is away. Depending on the family need, respite care can be arranged to provide temporary, substitute living arrangements or special care in the home for seniors. Respite care can provide a brief period of relief or rest (usually more than twenty four hours) for the family members, guardians or other people who are regular caregivers for seniors. There are also short-stay programs that are offered by some long-term care homes and retirement residences for seniors living in the community, who require care when recovering from an illness. Short-stay respite care for your elderly loved one can be provided to caregivers in the following circumstances: 1) The caregiver needs to be away for more than a day (example: vacation or work commitments). 2) The caregiver is hospitalized and needs someone to provide temporary care for their elderly loved one. 3) The caregiver requires 24-hour nursing care and/or assistance with daily living activities on a short-term basis. 4) For in-home respite care, services are coordinated by the CCAC and paid for by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. To find out more information about respite care for your loved one, contact the Toronto Cen-

The deadline for feedback is Saturday. The city is also planning to hold drop-in events in August. For more information on those events, check out www. toronto.ca/cyclingnetwork

Now the Pan Am Games have concluded, extended transit service is also largely over. The TTC ran plenty of extra service during the Games, including earlier Sunday subway starts, and received sterling reviews for the most part. With the Pan Am portion of the Games over, the TTC is largely back to regular levels of summer service. But there’s still shuttle service planned to venues holding the Parapan Am Games when they kick off Friday, Aug. 7.
vehicles with at least three people. Uber allows users to order a car using a mobile phone and has grown exponentially popular – to the chagrin of traditional cab drivers – for its ease of use. The carpool feature allowed two passengers headed in the same direction to share the cost of a single ride. Uber plans to bring the carpooling option back to Toronto permanently.

Uber’s Pan Am carpool service was a hit, says the rideshare provider. Approximately 33,000 people made use of uberPOOL during the service’s two-week trial run during the Games, the company said in a statement. Most of the trips took place in the downtown core and on Games HOV lanes that were restricted to

Queens Quay was recently re-opened after an ambitious redesign that saw the dingy concrete afterthought transformed into a multifaceted promenade that has proved a hit, judging by the hundreds of revellers last weekend. But with increased traffic comes confusion – and sometimes fisticuffs – as evidenced by a recent video of an altercation between a cyclist and pedestrian captured on the street, which added signage hasn’t been able to prevent. I even saw a vehicle traveling on the Martin Goodman Path on Saturday night, which is supposed to be reserved for cyclists’ use.
You’ve got until the end of the month to provide feedback for the future expansion of the Toronto bike network. Head to www.torontocyclingnetwork.metroquest.ca to pick and choose via interactive maps which cycling priorities the city should tackle over the next decade, and which ones shouldn’t be considered a priority.
