When York South-Weston Councillor Frances Nunziata said she told city staff the former Goodwill store on Runnymede Road isn’t an appropriate site for a 100-bed men’s shelter, her audience erupted in applause.

A third meeting to discuss the proposed men’s shelter at 731 Runnymede Rd., just south of St. Clair Avenue, drew a capacity crowd to the Annette Community Recreation Centre on Monday. Tempers flared among residents of both Nunziata’s Ward 11 and Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette’s Ward 13 yet,

Strap on snorkeling or SCUBA gear and dive in Lake Huron to explore the 22 shipwrecks at Fathom Five National Marine Park.

At Montmorency Falls Park, 84-metre-high waterfalls crash into the St. Lawrence from the Montmorency River. Enjoy the view while crossing over the falls on a suspension bridge, gondola or zipline, take the stairs that climb the cliff beside the falls, or try a via ferrata circuit and harness up to walk along a steel cable above the crashing water.

eggy’s Point Lighthouse rising from the rocky shore of St. Margaret’s Bay is arguably the most iconic scene in Atlantic Canada.

After photographing the famous beacon and exploring the rocks, head to neighbouring The Sou’Wester Restaurant and Gift Shop and enjoy a bowl of worldfamous seafood chowder.

Standing up to hate with pride and love

he city is on edge. Sunday’s mass murder at gay nightclub Pulse in Orlando, Florida, has put Toronto on high alert.

That’s evident by Monday’s quick response by Toronto police to reports of a masked man walking around the University of Toronto’s St. George campus that the safety of the city and its citizens is of paramount importance.

Dozens of Emergency Task Force officers descended on the campus, cordoning off roads searching each building, weapons drawn, in hopes of preventing a tragedy.

Was there proof something as heinous as what happened in Orlando could our view happen here, in broad daylight?

No. But the potential threat and that was enough.

Toronto stands existed The attack that killed 49 in solidarity people out enjoying a night of dancing and drinks at the gay with all club reminds us – once again – that hate hangs over us and lives can be tragically altered, and ended, in an instant.

While Toronto police came up empty in their search for the ‘suspicious person’, reporting such suspicious activity to the authorities is something each and every one of us can do to ensure the safety of ourselves and our fellow Torontonians.

We don’t want to live in fear, but we need to be vigilant to continue to live in peace.

As Toronto continues celebrating its first-ever Pride Month, Pride Toronto executive director Mathieu Chantelois noted the need for safety and solidarity in the wake of Sunday’s shootings.

“Pride has always been about creating a safe place where everyone can come together and be themselves,” he said.

“Now, we are so painfully aware of the importance of standing up to hate with love and celebrating the beauty, diversity and strength of our community.”

This year’s Pride parade will be dedicated to the memory of the Pulse victims.

The parade, which kicks off at Church and Bloor streets at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 3, will begin with a moment of silence, followed by a reading of the names of the 49 people killed and 53 wounded in the deadly attack.

Pride is working with Toronto police and the RCMP on an upgraded security plan to ensure the public remains safe throughout Pride Month.

The city is on edge, but it’s full of pride; for its citizens, its acceptance and its sense of freedom.

Need to go further in eradicating homophobia It was to be a nice little holiday in California: joining my wife at the end of a west-coast business junket to stay with dear old friends in Burbank, meet some of her Los Angeles-area family that hadn’t made it up for the wedding, enjoy some sun-drenched Southern California chill after not having seen each other for a couple of weeks.

A good holiday: the kind that celebrates loving relationships – reaffirming old ties, cementing new ones, along the mad freeway system that seems to be the spine of Los Angeles County.

On Sunday, early, we watched a bigger spine crack. In Orlando, Florida, more than 100 people were gunned down in a gay nightclub on Saturday night by Omar Mateen in what first seemed an act of terrible hate but now it seems was an act of deliberate terror.

And just down the

david nickle the city highway from us, in Santa Monica, police arrested an Indiana man with a truck full of guns and the stated intention of using them at Los Angeles’ Gay Pride parade. At this point, no word whether the planned attack was one of terror or hate.

Details. The suspect, who’d driven in from Indiana, meant to do harm to gay and lesbian and transsexual people. Armed like that, he likely meant to kill them.

That was very close – I’ll be honest, close enough that it rattled us.

But we didn’t have to be here in Burbank to feel that way. It’s close all around.

When we get back to Toronto later this week, that same threat – the low, cretinous bigotry that casts itself against the light of

unsanctified love (forgive me, today, that florid metaphor) – will be pervasive.

We’re in a city where a sizeable portion of the city has objected strongly enough to a curriculum promoting understanding of gay and lesbian sex that they would consider withdrawing their children from classes. Just a few years ago, we elected a mayor whose homophobia prevented him from attending Pride events and inspired him to fight when the Rainbow Flag flew over City Hall during the Sochi Olympics.

We’re getting better in some ways. At the top levels, we’re no longer burdened with hateful leadership: the new Mayor John Tory, the new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau don’t pander to that vile id.

Kathleen Wynne has spent a career, in part, defending against it.

We’re a good place.

But really, so is the United States. Same-sex

marriage is lawful. There is nothing wrong and very much right with a boy meeting a boy at the Pulse nightclub and exchanging a deep and hopeful kiss.

It ought not bring a death sentence.

U.S. President Barack Obama laid it out very clearly. The shootings at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando were an act of hate. They were an act of terror.

Homophobia, that bromide that has kept many scowling bigots in dinner-table conversation for decades, has inspired the worst mass-shooting in American history.

It is something that can no longer be tolerated, even in those quiet and awful conversations. If we are to take Daesh seriously, we must also take homophobes seriously. Omar Mateen has shown us.

Put ‘conditions’ in place if shelter goes ahead >>>from page 1 shelter in my ward is not the answer,” said Nunziata, prompting community members to burst into cheers. “There is no transit on St. Clair from Gunn’s Road to Jane; there are no (support) services in the area. We need to look at areas where there are services.”

The Runnymede location would not be suitable for helping homeless men integrate into the community, Nunziata added.

Gord Tanner, project director of Transition and Change Management for the Shelter, Support and Housing Administration division, explained there are homeless men in both wards and the city gets calls from residents and businesses about people hanging out on the train corridor, at Walmart, and at Home Depot where they sleep in the outdoor sheds. There are no shelters west of Caledonia Road, he pointed out.

“It’s important to keep people in their community, close to family and friends,” Tanner said. “In the winter of 2015, four people froze to death.

Since then, we’ve been looking for more shelters. We’re in the process of opening four more.”

shelter occupancy increased by 11 per cent, leading many of the city’s 59 shelters to operate at more than 90 per cent capacity. A report unanimously approved by council last year indicated as many as 15 new shelters would be needed over the next five years to alleviate the pressure on existing ones.

A city staff report recommending 731 Runnymede Rd. as a shelter location will go to the Community

Development and Recreation Committee on Thursday, June 23.

It will then be put to a vote at city council’s July 12, 13, and 14 meeting.

Residents are invited to make deputations at the committee meeting.

proximity to his home and his children’s day care, Mihevic said he got to know some of the men.

“They’re your uncle, your friend.

Many of them have jobs, but they can’t pull it together for first and last month’s rent,” he said.

When residents called for Doucette’s position on the proposed shelter, the councillor said she believes a shelter is necessary for the men in the community.

“We have homeless people in this neighbourhood,” she pointed out.

“If Councillor Nunziata and I vote against this shelter there’s a good chance it will still pass at council because that is the history, but we can work to put conditions in place for the shelter.”

Ward 13 resident Betty Zukorsky, who lives a couple of blocks from the Goodwill site, told The Villager she is torn over the issue.

“I wish I had a firm thought on it.

Part of me thinks we need shelters.

I’d rather have homeless people in a shelter than on the street. I think it’s a problem across the city,” she said.

“I like Doucette’s idea of creating a list of conditions.”

MPP’s private member’s bill passes Mayor Tory agrees to give councillor’s second reading at Queen’s Park gun amnesty a try

Etobicoke Centre Yvan Baker’s bill would ban door-to-door sales of furnaces, water heaters TAMARA SHEPHARD tshephard@insidetoronto.com Liberal Etobicoke Centre MPP Yvan Baker’s private member’s bill proposing a door-to-door sales ban of the four products that generate the most consumer complaints to the Ontario government passed second reading Thursday, June 9 in the Ontario Legislature.

Baker’s Bill 193 proposes a ban on door-to-door rentals, sales and leases of furnaces, air conditioners, water heaters and water treatment systems in an effort to crack down on aggressive sales tactics.

“I’ve heard, and other MPPs have heard, from so many concerned constituents about how they’ve been taken advantage of by misleading, aggressive and coercive sales tactics,” Baker said Friday.

“To me, it’s inexcusable.

I keep using the word, ‘reprehensible.’ It’s people using a business model based on preying on vulnerable people. That’s why the bill is so essential.”

Baker’s bill passed second reading on a 30-7 vote Thursday, just before the house broke for the summer recess. It may be examined by the all-party standing committee on the legislative assembly this fall.

Conservative MPPs voted unanimously against the bill, to Baker’s surprise, he said.

“I really expected the PCs to support the bill. I’m hopeful I can earn their support,” Baker said, adding he requested a rare recorded vote on his bill.

PC MPP Tim Hudak, who led the debate for the PCs, commended Baker’s “ambition,” but said he thought the bill “goes too far.”

“I am concerned that this bill and the member’s rhetoric portrays seniors as entirely vulnerable individuals who are unable to do the research, etc. for themselves, to say a simple ‘No, thank you,’” Hudak said.

“I see seniors in a much more empowered, positive and stronger light than the member’s comments portray.”

The Progressive Conservatives also argued the problem could be solved through consumer education.

Baker countered consumer education, while important, has not solved the issue to date.

“The government and the police have tried for years to increase awareness and it hasn’t worked,” Baker said Friday. “I agree education is part of the solution. But education on its own is not enough.”

Baker’s bill would ban any contracts for furnaces, air conditioners, water heaters and water treatment systems signed on porches, at front doors and in people’s homes. A contract signed in those circumstances would be void.

A consumer would be entitled to the return of any money paid under the contract, as well as the return or replacement of any product taken under the contract.

Baker’s bill proposes stiff penalties.

Individual offenders would be subject to a $2,000 fine under the ban. Organizations caught flouting the ban would face a fine of as many as $25,000.

This fall, Baker’s bill may be examined by the allparty standing committee.

However, there is no guarantee the committee will call Baker’s bill, he said.

“Generally, bills that get called to committee have allparty support,” Baker said.

Consumers can help to increase the likelihood the standing committee will call Baker’s bill for deliberation, he said, by putting their support for it in writing.

“We really need constituents and consumers to write their MPP and to write all three party leaders to express their support for this bill,” Baker said.

Municipalities across Ontario have supported Baker’s bill.

Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Richmond Hill, Markham, Hamilton, North Dundas, Oshawa, Pickering and Wellington North all passed council motions to support a provincial ban on door-to-door sales of products in the home services sector.

Mayor John Tory has joined York West Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti in calling for a new gun amnesty, in the wake of a rash of shootings in communities across the city.

“There’s not a single tool to rule out,” said Tory at a news conference on June 8. “We have to try everything we can to get these gangs rounded up. In the past some of the effectiveness has been limited. We’ve done one recently, that doesn’t mean we can’t do a more effective one.”

Tor y stood alongside Mammoliti and fellow city councillors Vince Crisanti and Josh Colle the day after a young man was gunned down in an alley near Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue – and just days after a 10-year-old boy was shot through the door of his home as he slept, in the Pape and Danforth area.

Mammoliti had previously recommended a gun amnesty through Toronto Police Service – suggesting a gun buy-back program that could see firearms exchanged for grocery gift cards.

“If a grocery chain comes forward with the suggestion that they donate a few hundred dollars worth of coupons, or maybe thousands, for people to trade in for guns, that could be a different part of the equation,” he said. “We’re trying to get to other people: the mothers, the brothers, the sisters of those who have committed crimes. They know those guns are under pillows. We might get these guns. Why not try it?

Tory had been skeptical initially, suggesting that gun amnesties tended to see old family heirlooms turned in and not take the guns out of the hands of criminals.

At the end of the day Uncle Frank’s pistol could be something used after a robbery or a crime. Organizers dedicate this year’s Pride parade to Orlando victims Toronto police, RCMP working with Pride on upgraded security plan JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com In the face of Sunday’s mass shooting at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, Pride Toronto is stepping forward and honouring the 49 people who lost their lives to a rampaging gunman.

Pride is dedicating this year’s Pride Parade to the victims of the shooting after 29-year-old Omar Mateen opened fire in Pulse in the early hours on Sunday morning.

“We are shocked and saddened by this horrible act,” said Aaron GlynWilliams, co-chair of Pride Toronto’s Board of Directors, in a statement. “By dedicating the pinnacle of Toronto’s Pride Month celebration to

our brothers and sisters in Orlando, we are telling the world that we will not be silenced or intimidated. We will not respond to hate with hate. We will mourn and hold these beautiful family members in our hearts, as we continue to fight violence and discrimination against our community.”

The parade, which will kick off at Church and Bloor streets at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 3, will begin with a moment of silence, followed by a reading of the names of the 49 people killed and 53 wounded in Mateen’s deadly attack.

In the meantime, Pride is working with Toronto Police and the RCMP on an upgraded security plan to ensure the public remains safe throughout

Pride Month. Pride has been wary of adding a uniformed presence to the festivities given that many in the LGBTQ community have had strained relationships with the police and have felt marginalized by law enforcement.

Despite any such concerns, Pride Toronto executive director Mathieu Chantelois noted the need for safety and solidarity in the face of hatred following Sunday’s shootings.

“Pride has always been about creating a safe place where everyone can come together and be themselves,” he said. “Now, we are so painfully aware of the importance of standing up to hate with love and celebrating the beauty, diversity and strength of our community.”

Police blame people for congestion It appears pedestrians, not cars, snarl traffic the most.

Just ask the police.

Additional uniformed officers appeared at eight troublesome city intersections this week, part of an initiative announced by Mayor John Tory earlier this month.

And while Tory insists road users equally play a role enabling traffic congestion and unsafe conditions, many Toronto police officers don’t agree. They point to those violators on foot for example with the temerity to cross even while the countdown timer is running, which interferes with cars’ ability to turn.

Pedestrian advocates counter that high speeds and roads designed purely for the benefit of one mode of transportation over all others are the main culprits for congestion.
