Last week, the three fallen Westlake brothers were again honoured thanks to the steadfast perseverance of a nephew they never met. In 1996, Jasper Park was renamed Westlake Memorial Park thanks to Westlake’s efforts.

Etobicoke York Community Council voted unanimously June 14 to also name a laneway west of Cliff Street between Langden and Jasper avenues “Heroes Lane” after the three Westlake brothers.

Family suffered its share of tragedies over the years >>>from page 1 to 23 Cliff St. after their father, Robert, who worked at a chocolate factory, died after a short bout of pneumonia in 1936 at age 63.

Brother Edward, and his wife, were given custody of Albert, 18 and George, 16. Three other brothers died in infancy.

Their mother, Etta Lee, had been committed to a mental health centre in 1932, where she remained until her death in 1945.

“It’s a story of tragedy,” Westlake said of his family in an interview.

“It was always my wish to get somebody other than myself and my family to know about them. If I went up to 1,000 Canadians at random and asked if they’d ever heard of the Westlake brothers, I could pretty much bet my house they would say no.”

Of the three brothers who served overseas, Tommy was the athlete.

“People said he could run faster backwards than most people could run forward,” Westlake said. Albert was the ladies man. George was a newlywed who wrote home often of missing his wife, Vera.

Westlake, 74, traveled to Europe in 1962 at age 20 with his best friend. There, he visited Benysur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery where 2,049 white crosses mark the graves of young Canadians who died on the beach and in the subsequent battles. He felt the enormity of their sacrifice.

“I stood in solitude before the holiest place I had ever been,” Westlake said.

The next day, he wrote his father: “A Westlake has returned to Normandy.”

W h e n We s t l a k e r e t u r n e d home from Normandy, his father wrapped his arm around him at the airport and quietly said, “Thanks.”

His father never spoke of the war and rarely, of his fallen brothers, Westlake said.

“He’d sing The White Cliffs of Dover with me at age four lying on his chest, my older brother, John, on the floor next to the chesterfield,” Westlake recalled, adding that was his father’s remembrance.

Twenty years later, Westlake experienced a renewed curiosity about his uncles’ deaths. He approached the Queen’s Own Rifles regiment to learn about the battle in which Tommy and Albert were killed.

“People said ‘they were never honoured for that. It’s a story that should be told. See if you can get something done for them,’” Westlake recalled.

All three Westlake brothers boarded landing craft on June 4, 1944 and were among the thousands of Canadian soldiers to land in the first wave on Juno Beach on the morning of June 6, 1944.

George, 23, died first. He was executed on June 7, only a day after storming the beach.

Four days later, his brothers, Tommy, 29, and Albert, 26, members of the Queen’s Own Rifles, were among 100 Canadians who died trying to take the tiny village of Mesnil-Patry, held by soldiers of the fanatical 12 SS (Hitlerjugend) Panzer Division led by the infamous Col. Kurt Meyer, who would later be sentenced to death at the Nuremberg trials.

“Tommy and Albert died in each other’s arms,” Westlake said, noting the brothers had manned the same submachine gun, one loading the bullets, the other firing.

Garnet Watson, a friend, wrote a letter reporting the brothers’ bodies lay in a wheat field. He joined the regiment’s padre to retrieve their bodies on a gun carriage and bury them together before they were exhumed in 1947 and moved to Beny-sur-Mer. In 1984, Westlake approached first the Alan Tonks’ York administration, then that of his successor, Fergy Brown, to have a landmark dedicated to his uncles. Despite

vocal and pledged interest, it never came to pass.

Then Westlake met then-York mayor Frances Nunziata. “You may as well do something about this. I’m not going away,” Westlake recalled telling Nunziata. “‘I promise, I will,’ she told me. She contacted me within a day.”

Westlake declined a few potential sites when Jasper Park came up.

Westlake thanked Nunziata, today a York South-Weston councillor, as he spoke before community council.

“I finally met Frances, and she said she would do something for me,” Westlake told councillors.

“Frances finally got (the park renaming) done in an extremely short time. That day in 1996 was a wonderful day. It’s a beautiful park that represents my dad’s brothers.”

Last winter, Nunziata and Canadian veteran Bill Riddell with Mount Dennis Royal Canadian Legion Branch 31 knocked doorto-door on 14 homes adjacent to the park to gain support for “Heroes Lane,” Riddell said.

Riddell lauded the laneway naming in honour of the Westlakes, who lost their lives 72 years ago this month.

“I hope it will further honour their sacrifice,” Riddell said.

He returned with his son, Scott, in June 2004 for the 60th anniversary of D-Day. There, they met Canadian journalists Paul Workman and Tom Kennedy. “‘Why is it so important for you to bring your father to Normandy and, in particular, to Beny-surMer?’” Westlake recalled Kennedy

asking his son. “‘Because that is the way remembrance should be. Father to son and father to son, forever,’” Scott Westlake told Kennedy.

“I still remember my son’s words,” Westlake said. “That was the essence of our trip.”

Te n y e a r s l a t e r, We s t l a k e returned to Normandy. He met The Westlake Brothers Souvenir, an association of French youth devoted to remembrance named after the brothers.

The youth perform ceremonies at war cemeteries in Normandy every May leading up to the June 6th anniversary.

They beautify the grounds of Beny-sur-Mer, taking special care of the Westlake brothers’ graves.

The Westlake Brothers Souvenir has done much to honour the Westlake brothers in Normandy, Westlake said. Every five years, the Souvenir visits Westlake here, or Westlake visits them in Normandy.

elcome to summer Toronto! It officially arrived on Monday of this week, but judging by our recent hot weather it’s actually been here for awhile.

And is there any better place to be in the summer than Toronto?

We’ve got it all, as you can see by our Summer In The City feature story in this week’s paper.

This coming first weekend of summer sees events such as the Luminato Festival, Taste of Toronto and the beginning of two weekends of top-level youth soccer action with the Robbie tournament.

The Robbie International Soccer Tournament celebrates its 50th anniversary OuR ViEW this year, and it has grown from a small event with a few teams in 1967 to City boasts a Scarborough what is now the world’s largest cross-section youth soccer tournament for charity. of events It has raised more than $1.6 million for Cystic Fibrosis Canada in that time. The 50th version of the Robbie will see in excess of 300 teams playing in the festival (for boys and girls teams ages eight to 12) this weekend, and then the competitive tourney (for boys and girls teams 13 to 18) from July 1 to 3.

And that’s not all. While Pride Month events have been taking place in Toronto throughout June, things really kick into gear this weekend as Pride Week begins.

The week culminates in the Pride Parade July 3, which travels along Church Street from Bloor to Yonge-Dundas Square, but will also include the Trans March July 1 and the Dyke March July 2.

Other large city-wide events in the next few weeks include the Honda Indy, which brings in racers and race fans from around the world, starting July 15. The Indy has been a Toronto tradition since 1986. Also, there’s the Toronto Caribbean Carnival starting July 28 and continuing through to the holiday Monday on Aug. 1. From humble beginnings back in 1967, the carnival has grown to become a massive tourist draw for Toronto.

But not every event this summer is geared to huge crowds and tourists. There’s no end of community festivals set for our city, and whatever neighbourhood you are in, you will be sure to find something to do this summer in the city.

Big discussions, decisions planned for city’s future Next week Mayor John Tory’s Executive Committee sits down for the last time before business at city hall winds down for the summer.

But don’t expect a lazy, hazy meeting. Indeed, the June 28 gathering of Mayor Tory’s cabinet-like committee could be the most important one of the entire term.

On the agenda: • a report revising upwards the cost of the single-stop Scarborough subway, that also sets the city’s transit-building agenda for the next two decades; • another one, looking at revenue tools beyond property taxes to pay for things like that transit plan; • a review of the city’s considerable real estate assets, taken with an eye to maximizing savings and revenues; • and the implementation of the Tenants First plan, to try and put right the city’s considerable portfolio of public housing.

david nickle the city To put it another way: the Executive Committee will be considering some of the most expensive initiatives under consideration

by Toronto Council this term, at the same meeting as it examines some of the most ambitious measures to pay for those initiatives.

It is not immediately obvious how Mayor Tory and his like-minded Executive Committee members will rise to those two challenges.

So far, balancing ambition and reality has been an ungainly exercise for the team. Tory has been anxious to get down to the business of city-building, slow to get to the business of budget-pruning, and brashly confident in his ability to do both.

His letter of instruction to the budget committee that met this week illus-

trates this perfectly. He has asked the committee to freeze expenditures for 2017, keep property taxes at or below the inflation rate. Efficiencies are to be found, alternate service delivery (contracting out) is to be considered… but ambitious new programs that form the backbone of Tory’s election-platform mandate are sacrosanct: transit and transportation, housing, and poverty reduction.

That mission statement leaves very little room to wiggle – but the wiggle-room increases when the two questions of what we want and how we can afford it are asked and answered on different schedules.

The June 28 Executive Committee meeting is a rare confluence, wherein everything is on the table at once.

Do we want to build a massively expensive, marginally useful single-stop subway in Scarborough,

knowing that we will then have to consider raising all kinds of levies and taxes in order to afford it? We do need to repair our public housing, and that while other levels of government might offer some help, we’ll have to put up some share of the cost. How? Executive Committee members won’t have to answer all those questions immediately. But they will have to start talking about them in the same breath – in a way that until now mainly the mayor’s critics have done, and that the mayor and his supporters have characterized as simply nay-saying.

At some point, the politics has to stop and the governance has to start.

Next week, looking hard at both the dream and the problem, is as good a time as any to begin.

Seven communities within 12 Division have been identified by the Toronto Strong Neighourhoods Strategy 2020 as areas where the city needs to prioritize its resources, Weidmark pointed out. In the last six months, the number of assaults have risen slightly over last year’s statistics, from 278 to 308.

Auto thefts have decreased by 29 per cent from 98 in 2015 to 70 and break and enters have risen from 81 to 98, while murders have increased slightly from one last year to three, but police have made arrests in all three, Weidmark reported.

Robberies have increased by 14 per cent; these are happening among youth who are stealing items like “fancy” phones from each other typically between the hours of 2 and 7 p.m.

While shootings are up 50 per cent within the entire city, they have decreased by 17 per cent in 12 Division.

Weston Road and Black Creek Drive-area resident Andrea Frazer, a nurse at Humber River Hospital,

pointed to the violence in her neighbourhood.

“It’s a high crime area.

Why is there not an officer working the streets getting to know the children – young and older – to build a rapport with police,” she asked.

The chief said officers are putting resources in place where they are necessary and encouraged everyone to make contact with their local station if they ever have any issues.

The proposed 100-bed men’s shelter at Runnymede Road and St. Clair Avenue was a concern among a few residents who live nearby.

“I’m fearful for the safety of my street,” said one. “What will this do to our community?”

Saunders explained that there are officers who understand the shelter system, who are very pro-active.

“Rest assured, this won’t be an issue,” he said. “We’re very good at enforcement.

When you make us aware of your concerns, we’re on it.”

Tory backs $68M road safety plan Pedestrian and cycling safety advocates are fuming, but a road safety plan meant to curb the spate of deaths was approved in principle by the city’s public works and infrastructure committee this week.

The plan still needs council’s full approval to become a reality, and has the backing of Mayor John Tory and public works chair Jaye Robinson.

While Toronto has barely half the amount of rapid transit lines and less than half the stations of its sister city, it boasts over a million more daily trips, including 68 per cent of morning commuters making use of transit compared to less than 30 per cent of Chicagoans.

Wisniewski also heaps praise on Toronto’s tendency of late to tie development with transit building.

The work taking place at both the main and secondary entrances to Bathurst station isn’t expected to disrupt service, although riders will have to deal with barricades on the bus platform, as well as a “nonhazardous” odour emanating when liquid asphalt is poured out. And they’ll have to board shuttle buses instead of the regular 511 streetcars.

Further south on Bathurst Street, the College Street intersection remains closed until July 12 for track repairs and road work.
