MP calls for bill to fight cellphone thefts

HIGH NOTES AND HIGH HOPES

HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Local MP for York-South Weston, Mike Sullivan, put forth a bill to Parliament Tuesday to make it illegal to tamper or change any serial number linked to cellphones in order to decrease the number of thefts across Canada. If passed, it will become a punishable offence with five years in jail. According to Sullivan, this legislation will then cripple the market for used cellphones, which are often stolen phones. “In the area of 12 Division, 85 per cent of their street crimes are cell phone thefts,” said Sullivan. “And it’s because people are carrying around a $600 or $800 piece of equipment in their pocket. And it’s very easy to sell it and reactivate it.” This bill is the final piece to the puzzle Sullivan and the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission have been working >>>CELLPHONE, page 2
