MP calls for bill to fight cellphone thefts

HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Local MP for York-South Weston, Mike Sullivan, put forth a bill to Parliament Tuesday to make it illegal to tamper or change any serial number linked to cellphones in order to decrease the number of thefts across Canada.

If passed, it will become a punishable offence with five years in jail.

According to Sullivan, this legislation will then cripple the market for used cellphones, which are often stolen phones.

“In the area of 12 Division, 85 per cent of their street crimes are cell phone thefts,” said Sullivan. “And it’s because people are carrying around a $600 or $800 piece of equipment in their pocket. And it’s very easy to sell it and reactivate it.”

Cellphone muggings near local school spark MP’s push for database >>>from page 1 on since last summer, after a string of cellphone muggings took place around Chaminade College School.

According to the Acting Supt. Douglas Quan, cellphone robberies are a “major concern” for 12 Division.

“A significant amount of our resources go towards cellphone robberies,” said Quan. “And any enhanced technology or amendments

from cellphone companies to render the phones inoperable or of no value, is welcomed.”

According to Quan, police cars were positioned around the neighborhood surrounding Chaminade to patrol for the culprits behind the muggings.

Since then, police have made several arrests in relation to those muggings, but it was the extra push Sullivan

needed to pursue this bill and find a way to track stolen cellphones and prevent them from being sold on the black market.

And as it turns out a database by Global Services for Mobile (GSM), a company that represents the interests of mobile operators worldwide, already has a database in place.

“It exists,” said Sullivan.

“So all they (carriers) need

to do is subscribe to it, it’s free, and enter their data into that database as a phone is reported stolen.”

“If I was a person with a stolen cellphone I would feel like someone was accusing me of stealing it. That’s another deterrent to the whole thing.”

If the bill is passed, the database will be in full swing by the fall or even sooner, said Sullivan.

Canadian songstress Amanda Davids will hit the stage for Canadian Music Week 2013 for the first time in her career and she couldn’t be more excited.

“They get thousands of submissions a year,” Davids said. “It’s a really tough festival to get into. To me it means I’ve reached a level of professionalism to compete as a musician.”

Davids debut concert will consist of a 40-minute set with eight songs at the Courthouse at 27 Adelaide St. W. March 20 at 7 p.m.

According to Davids, she’s been working on her sound during the winter and hopes to bring something “fresh to the festival,” which includes a couple of new songs, one of which is titled The Villain.

Davids is known for her unique sound, created through playing the Hammond organ, the piano and singing with her band member and co-producer Dan “Shai” Mendelsohn, who plays the eight string guitar.

The release of Davids’ first album Distinguishable inDifference, a five-track groove session, has Davids signature sound stamped all over it; a fusion of jazz, soul, blues and funk.

“I sum it up as urban funk,” Davids said.

Her mélange of sounds gets her the unlikeliest of comparisons from time to time. She’s gotten everything from the ’70s progressive rock-group Emerson, Lake & Palmer to the urban soul of Joss Stone, and even neo-soul sound of The Roots on occasion.

“My inspiration comes from the ’70s and I do take a lot of influence from ’90s hip-hop,” Davids said. “(I have) more

urban influences like En Vogue, Lauryn Hill and modern artist Esperanza Spalding.”

The album, released last year and is now available on iTunes, has taken her on a U.K. 2012 tour for 12 days, the 2012 NXNE Festival and the Toronto Blues Society Showcase. And 2013 looks just as promising with her touring to the north eastern parts of the United States, before she graces the stage at Canadian Music Week 2013.

Davids will be joining more than 1,000 artists from all over the world on 60 stages across Toronto over six days beginning March 19. The festival begins with international sensation Rihanna headlining the event at the Air Canada Centre.

“This festival just opens up opportunities to mingle with other artists from all over the world,” Davids said. “To take influence, give influence and share ideas.”

Now in its 31st year, Canadian Music Week is seen as a spring board for artists to launch into the next phase of their career.

Artists like Feist and Broken Social Scene have both graced the stages in years past and have gone on to be commercially successful.

But for Davids, performing at the festival is just one aspect she’s looking forward to. The other is all the conferences and networking that goes on when artists aren’t performing.

“It’s a great opportunity to network and learn more about your craft and get new and fresh ideas,” Davids said.

Mother held stabbing victim as he lay dying

Sadowski, who lives in the Bathurst Street and St. Clair Avenue area, is currently working on the feature, titled The Next Morning. He is making the film with help from a grant from Telefilm Canada, as he was one of eight inaugural beneficiaries of Telefilm’s Micro-Budget Production Program.

“A lot of my short films and plays were a lot darker – my very first short film was about a 10-year-old heroin addict – so it was definitely different pitching a romantic comedy,” he said.

The Next Morning follows a nebbish protagonist who has a whirlwind romance with a girl who wants to find a oneof-a-kind love, leading the filmmaker to liken it to Before Sunrise if it had been written

by Woody Allen.

“It’s one of those microrelationships that happen over 24 hours,” he said. “It’s also set in Toronto and kind of serves as a love letter to the city.”

The story is loosely based on his own experiences. He recalled having a brief but passionate romance in 2004 in which he almost came to believe the girl with which he had become involved was destined to be the girl he was going to marry. As with most torrid romances, however, things began to dissolve almost as quickly as they started.

That, coupled with a bout of isolation while he was working as an actor overseas, prompted him to write the screenplay.

“I was cast in Power Rangers and flown to New Zealand,” he said. “When I was down there, away from my friends

and family, I decided I had time to write.”

He thought at first that the screenplay was too personal, but found that people related to the story and enjoyed the script.

He worked as an actor under the name Matt Austin until he started a family, at which point he found both his passions and his schedule made directing a more appealing option.

His work as an actor certainly helped him with his directing career.

“For sure, I (annoyed) a lot of the directors I worked with because of all the questions I asked, ‘Why are you doing this? Why aren’t you putting this camera over there?’ But I think everything I did helped

make me a better director,” he said.

While he is working on The Next Morning, Sadowski is also touring with his short film S is for Bird, which depicts a crotchety bowling alley employee who softens thanks to the hiring of a pretty new employee and by meeting a precocious child.

“It’s kind of the short film I knew I had to make if I was going to make The Next Morning because it was less dark,” he said.

S is for Bird, which won the 2011 National Screen Institute Award, will premiere at the Canadian Film Festival later this month.

Cocomello was taken to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, where he underwent

surgery, but later died of his injuries.

“And as a musician, I mean especially today, you have to constantly be evolving because everything changes so fast.”

But it won’t be all work and no play for Davids. She plans to catch as many shows as she can that week, including The Jessica Stuart Few and Mamabolo from Toronto and Yuichiro Tokuda’s RALYZZDIG from Japan.

When Davids isn’t planning out her next career move, she’s busy nurturing the voice and sounds of others through musical education.

She teaches piano, vocal and song-writing classes out of her home in the Keele Street and Rogers Road area.

“My philosophy on being a musician in general is to continually try to improve the craft and evolve as a musician myself,” Davids said. “And that sort of extends to offering my experience and education to new generations of musicians.”

She has students ranging from children to adults, but the majority of them are teens looking to find their signature voice much like Davids has.

“The type of lessons I offer are more of developing yourself as a musician,” said Davids, which is something she did while attending the University of Toronto and it helped push her to pursue a career in music.

“You see a whole spectrum of people and perspective careers. It just opens you up to new avenues and ideas of what you can do with your life,” Davids said.

She was enrolled in the psychology program at U of T. “It helps with song writing, believe it or not.”

March Break an opportunity to give back F

or high school and elementary students and their families, the March Break is next week.

It’s a welcome opportunity to spend quality time with friends and family.

It’s also an opportunity to get to know your community a little better through volunteering.

We know multiple opportunities exist for citizens of all ages to get involved with a local organization, regardless of time of year. But a number of those organizations do have March Break-specific initiatives to consider.

For example, the Daily Bread Food Bank is once again running a program in which high school students are invited to volunteer during regular business hours from March 11 to 15. ou called me, Boss?” I asked, as I knocked on the door of the head honcho of The Mirror himself, none other than Samuel Metroland III. “Come on in, Jamie. But before we begin, now how many times have I told you not to refer to me as Boss?”

“About a gazillion, I guess. My apologies.”

“You know how much I hate formalities. So let’s make a pact, OK? None of this silly Boss stuff, anymore. From now on, please just call me Mr. Metroland III.” “Will do, Boss.”

“Uh, uh, uh.”

“Oops. I mean, will do, Mr. Metroland III.” “Much better. Now let’s get down to the purpose of this little meeting. Did you bring your new column photo with you as we discussed?”

“I most certainly did.

I have it right here in my briefcase. I was kind of

Weston-Mount Dennis photo exhibit puts focus on employment woes People express emotions related to employment struggles HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Lack of employment is plaguing the City of Toronto and the WestonMount Dennis community is no exception.

The area’s struggle with temporary, contract, casual or part-time employment was on display Feb. 27 at the Jane Street Hub in the form of a photography and story exhibit titled Working Hard, but Ending Up Nowhere: Photos and Stories from Weston-Mount Dennis.

“You can tell people are putting great thought into this,” said Ann De Shalit, project co-ordinator. “They’re really putting their hearts out there to express their experiences and that’s hard to do.”

The exhibit displayed 21 photos, with each one trying to answer the same three questions: How has precarious employment affected your livelihood and neighbourhood? What changes have you noticed in your neighbourhood as a result of precarious employment? And what resources are available in your neighbourhood for people experiencing precarious conditions?

De Shalit, like the seven community members who contributed to the gallery, is in precarious employment in the form of contract work.

“I can relate on my own personal level, I’m contracted and my job is never secure and I’m a student.”

In her eyes no one is exempt from these working conditions; students as well as those in their 50s and 60s are finding themselves more frequently in precarious employment.

The photos had subjects ranging

from an abandoned beer store, to a family selling off all the contents of their home, to a picture of train tracks with the caption: like a long, desolate, lonely track with no destination in sight.

“What we’re getting back is very interesting and very varied. It’s a textured look at what these experiences are.” said Grace-Edward Galabuzi, the lead researcher in the case studies for Mount Dennis and downtown east from Ryerson University.

“It’s very real, it’s very emotional and it’s people talking about the challenges they face, the impact on their dreams and how the community is changing.”

For Dr. Gail Matthews, one of the photographers in attendance, seeing the other photographs was an eye-opening and reaffirming experience.

“I thought, the stories were very insightful and confirmed my own experiences of being unemployed,” said Matthews.

“I think living in this area one can think that your experience is your own and no one else is going through it. But now seeing and reading these stories, it’s not one individual story.”

The exhibit in the Weston-Mount Dennis community doubles as one of six case studies conducted by McMaster University in collaboration with the United Way. The other five are across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.

According to a report released

Feb, 23 by McMaster and the United Way, precarious employment has seeped into middle-come households earning $50,000 to $100,000. And it is found to be workers in postsecondary institutions, hospitals, governments as well as non-profit organizations.

The report also found a 50 per cent increase in precarious employment in the past 20 years and this appears to be affecting non-whites and newcomers who were are in Canada fewer than 20 years.

According to Galabuzi, these photo exhibits are just one phase of a broader plan to help communities cope with the precarious employment that has spread across the city.

“Focus groups and semi-structured interviews with some community members, service providers, small businesses and employers is the next step,” said Galabuzi.

From these interviews and discussions, Galabuzi, along with Navjeet Sidhu, a researcher from Social Planning Toronto, are hoping that a poverty reduction strategy can surface to help the people of Weston-Mount Dennis and the GTA as a whole.

“We think that access to decent, well-paying employment is a key component to any poverty reduction strategy,” said Sindhu.

“We’re definitely looking towards developing policies at the municipal or provincial level. I also think engaging employers – they have a key role in this as well.”

Until then, the exhibit was designed to start a conversation within the community, according to De Shalit, and that was accomplished.

“People can fall back on it for support, even though its still frustrating and it’s still difficult,” said De Shalit.

Toronto pedestrians urged to Do the Bright Thing RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Toronto police and GO Transit have launched a safety campaign encouraging pedestrians to wear bright clothing in an effort to reduce collisions with motorists.

approximately 4,000 GO Transit commuters as part of the Do the Bright Thing awareness campaign that launched Monday at Union Station.

The one-week campaign encourages pedestrians to wear bright or reflective clothing to increase their visibility in busy traffic areas.

According to Smith, a fouryear veteran of the police

traffic services department, 100 people die annually in the province due to collisions with motorists – 25 per cent of them in Toronto. He believes the vast majority of such accidents are preventable if pedestrians are more visible to cars and refrain from distractions in heavy traffic areas.

n a few days, those of us so inclined will have an opportunity to relive the summer of 2011, when Jack Layton, the first New Democrat federal Opposition leader and almost prototypical progressive Toronto politician, succumbed to cancer.

It was emotionally wrenching then; watching the new telefilm Jack, it is nearly as wrenching now.

The film, screened for the family, supporters and some media earlier this week, airs Sunday night on CBC. Jack is far from perfect. It paints an at-points absurdly sunny picture of the very political life Jack Layton and Olivia Chow led together, and for a biopic offers frustratingly few clues about the things that contributed to Layton’s politics and political drive.

As my companion at the screening pointed out, there’s no “rosebud” moment in Jack.

With that said: The telefilm packs an emotional punch. Much of that can

It will be curious to see how the film is received by viewers outside the bubble of Toronto, and national politics. Because like it or not, Jack is more than a film about a politician.

Coming less than two years after Layton’s death, when Layton’s successor Thomas Mulcair is aiming to be prime minister in 2015, and Chow is likely considering a run for mayor in Toronto a year earlier, Jack is something of a rallying call for progressively inclined voters.

This, of course, is an

extension of what Layton clearly intended when he handed off his death-bed letter to Chow, and the rest of the country, with that stirring call toward optimism and love and kindness.

It is also an extension of his detailed instructions, delivered earlier in that same letter, telling his party how best to mobilize in the months following his death.

It’s tempting to be cynical on that basis and dismiss Jack as nothing more than an exercise in publicly funded NDP propaganda.

It would be easier to do that if the sometimes hokey idealism depicted in the film weren’t so accurate a reflection of how it manifested in the real lives of Layton and Chow; if the story of a generally decent, earnest and publicly motivated political couple who finally won and then lost again, weren’t the story we’d all lived through just two years past.
