150 graves were discovered will be declared a “burial ground.” The archeological investigation documented 153 graves of which 147 contained intact burials. The remaining six graves appear to have been

exhumed. The Registrar (Funeral, Burial, and Cremation Services Act, 2002) is inviting representatives of the persons whose remains are interred in the burial ground to contact the Registrar within two weeks after

Sprinter Gavin Smellie on track for Pan Am Games Athlete found his stride at Dante Aligheri Academy CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com When Gavin Smellie transferred from George Harvey Collegiate Institute to Dante Aligheri Academy, he wanted to continue playing soccer for his new high school. “That’s a funny story,” said Smellie, recalling what happened next was essentially how he got into track and field. After transferring to the Dufferin Street and Lawrence Avenue area high school, Smellie learned it was too late in the season for him to join the soccer team. So he decided to stay active by playing other sports. “I was a terrible basketball player,” Smellie laughed, adding he was better in volleyball and badminton. But what he excelled in was track and field. “I did a race off with some kid,” said Smellie, who gave his opponent a significant head start but still managed to beat him. Then he tested his speed against other runners at the Toronto District College Athletic Association championships. “I almost missed the race because my coach was late that day,” said Smellie, wondering if it wasn’t meant to be. “Maybe it was just fate. Maybe I should really go home.” Fate had other plans; his coach arrived just in time with his bin number. Smellie went on to lions support Weston food bank wYork The York Lions Club recently donated $1,000 to the Weston Area Emergency Support (W.A.E.S.) Food Bank to help families in need. The amount brings donations by the club to the food bank to $17,000 over five years. Some 325 families are assisted each month by the food bank, which has served

qualify for the metro championships and continued his success, competing as a sprinter in the Canadian Junior Nationals, the Pan American Junior Championships, the World Championships and the 2012 London Olympic Games. “These guys are at another level and that made me more hungry,” Smellie said of his fellow international competitors as he prepares for the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto. Now to run on “home turf” in front of family and friends will be a special moment for the 28-year-old who also has his sights on the 2016 Summer

Olympic Games in Brazil. “This is a great thing for me and Toronto,” said Smellie, adding Toronto fans in general support their teams and country. “I know they take pride when you go out there and compete. They’ll be behind you 100 per cent. It’s an awesome feeling.”

W

eston born and raised baritone Elliot Madore said as difficult as his career is, he’s fortunate to be earning a living with his voice and performing such beautiful music around the world. “This job is really a joy. It’s not easy, but I’m definitely lucky to be singing for a living. That’s amazing in and of itself and to sing such beautiful music with such beautiful poetry is really special,” he said. The 27-year-old will be performing the lead role of Pelléas in the opera Pelléas et Mélisande by French composer Claude Debussy, first in Croatia and then in Munich, Germany. Then he will fly across the Atlantic to San Francisco to perform as Anthony Hope in a production of Sweeney Todd in September and then will perform the lead role of Figaro in the production of Barber of Seville at the prestigious Metropolitan Opera in New York City in December. As busy as he is, he does

have a homecoming performance coming up as well. He will perform a recital at Toronto’s St. Lawrence Centre, 27 Front St. E., accompanied by pianist Rachel Andrist on Thursday, March 26. “I have a lot of family coming. I’m sure I’ll be more nervous to sing in Toronto than anywhere else. It’s really special for me to sing in Toronto. It’s where I grew up. It’s where I have a lot of memories. It’ll be special and I’m looking forward to it,” he said. Madore has been singing from a young age, first with choirs, and then he began taking vocal lessons at around age 10. He attended Humbercrest Public School and then the Etobicoke School of the Arts for music theatre. At age 13, he said his voice dropped to a manly, melodic tone and he knew he wanted to be a singer. He attended the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where he earned his bachelors degree in voice and masters degree in opera. He met his wife in Germany, while performing in Berlin at a show she helped organize, and they now live there together. He admitted performing internationally is a lonely life, traveling to places where he doesn’t speak the

language and where he is away from his family. But he’s used to it, having been on the road since leaving Toronto nearly 10 years ago. When he’s in Toronto, he stays at his grandparents’ home, where he said he can’t resist his grandmother’s cooking. While he has a single performance date in Toronto, he’ll stay for more than a week in the city. The Toronto concert will feature romantic German, English and French music, some of his favourites, plus some impressionist French songs. “It’s a very intimate, personal evening. I really enjoy it. It’s a lot more intimate than singing opera,” he said. He enjoys the big opera roles as well and isn’t phased by their pressure. “I try not to view it as pressure. I just want to portray the character as the composer would have wanted. I feel like the more I delve into the details of the work, the language, the music, the pressure just slips away. It’s not about me, it’s not about my ego, it’s about giving justice to the piece.” The Toronto concert starts at 8 p.m. March 26. Visit www.music-toronto.com for tickets; for info on the singer, visit www.elliotmadore.com

Tory’s first 100 days: a blueprint for the future?

M

ayor John Tory’s first 100 days have been momentous: he’s waged a war on those who park on arterial roads during rush hour; he’s headed to Ottawa to discuss city issues; he’s discussed bringing the city’s outdated methods into the 21st century; he’s put into motion the beginning analysis on his SmartTrack transit plan; and he’s tabled his first budget. Exciting times for Tory. Equally exciting times for the City of Toronto. But all this excitement, whether admitted or not, will come with a price: fare hikes, tax hikes, service fee hikes – hikes, hikes, hikes. This is not to say hikes are necessarily a bad thing; you have to raise money to run this city. But where does this lead? While these steps feel like the our view city is heading in the right direction in terms of government relations, transit planning and Long-term economic development, goal is what even we assume they are planks in a short-, medium- and long-term matters strategy for the city. We think the public would be served with the ever-craved transparency of a public document that shows what those strategy benchmarks might look like for key municipal files. Tory has done an admirable job of being available to the media – what seems like any time of the day – and he’s also brought a necessary calm to the chain of office. But this is window dressing when it comes to the big picture. It’s clear Tory wants to see Toronto on solid ground – he has to, he banked on the city’s economic outlook by borrowing in the future to pay for a present-day budget shortfall. Regardless of all the things accomplished during his first 100 days, it’s the next 265 days, the next 1,095 days until the next election that matter more. The short-term gains are welcome, but the long-term goal is what needs articulating. If we are to be the world-class city Tory and Torontonians want to be, we will need to pay for it – we’ve said as much in many editorials. However, we also need to know from those in charge of the municipal purse what their long-term vision is – two, three, four even eight years out. The first 100 days sets a tone, but what is the entire song they’ll be playing?

Enjoy the benefits of daylight saving time It’s the same story every year when we move the clocks ahead an hour. People get all worked up over it the night before and then moan and groan about the enormous impact it has on their lives the following morning. Thankfully, the grumbling over the switch to daylight saving time doesn’t last long. By the next day everyone is back to their regular complaining routine. What’s surprising about the upheaval that arises over one measly lost hour is that the purpose of the time change is to have the opposite effect. It’s supposed to lift our spirits, not dampen them. Extended daylight is good for the system. What’s more, like any form of savings, it’s great for the bottom line, too. For my money, given that this has been the coldest winter in recent memory, the timing for the recent move to daylight saving couldn’t be better. People

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY have been hiding inside for far too long. It’s time to get out again already. For those of you who have been reluctant to embrace the idea in the past, but are considering investing in daylight savings for the first time, you won’t be disappointed. Here are just a few of the myriad benefits you can expect. 1. Interest accrues daily The sights, the sounds, the air, the atmosphere, the whole shebang, it doesn’t take long to get hooked on daylight. 2. High-yield bonds go hand in hand There’s just something about getting together in the great outdoors that helps relationships grow. (The same holds true for the average outdoors and the so-so outdoors, for that matter, if that’s all that’s available to you.)

3. The value of its liquidity should never be underestimated Is there anything more relaxing than sharing a coffee under a deep blue sky? 4. Don’t forget about the convenience inherent in this plan Partaking in the benefits of sunlight is never more than an open door away. 5. Start-up costs are waived With good reason. Nobody charges you admission to see the sun. 6. There are no monthly fees as well See above. (Sea below, too. If you live near water, that is.) 7. It’s also tax-free Whatever you do, don’t blab that around. We don’t want the government getting any ideas. The last thing we need is a DSTT (Daylight Saving Time Tax). 8. In addition, daylight saving is not mentally taxing It’s not rocket science, nor do you have to think

outside the box to participate either. You don’t have to think at all. You just have to head outside. 9. Reducing debt is just a walk in the park All the experts agree that most debt is accumulated inside during daylight hours. So put your wallet away and get reacquainted with fresh air. In other words, it’s time get a new set of priorities. The best way to say goodbye to rising debt is to say hello to raison d’etre. 10. Lastly, nobody will try to convince you to get a points card along with it That’s because you can’t accumulate multiple points in this plan. There’s one point and one point only when it comes to daylight saving: enjoy. And nobody can redeem that. The experience is priceless. ings and were limited to a maximum of 25 kilometres per hour for the media tour, but can reach top speeds of over 110 kilometres per hour, said locomotive engineer Chris Fox. The vehicles can also be converted to run on electricity rather than diesel, although plans for doing so remain unfunded.

With money provided by the provincial government, Metrolinx estimates it would take at least three years to electrify UP station and track infrastructure as well as vehicles. The unclear timeline for electrification has proven a major bone of contention for opponents of the

project. The rail spur rises to 28 metres above street-level at its highest point, and according to Metrolinx is the longest rail bridge in the province. It also has six curves with varying levels of sharpness requiring different speed restrictions. Trains are limited to around 40 km/h entering and leaving the Pearson station. The route spans over at least five separate roadways in the airport area including Airport Road, Viscount Road, Network Road, Zahvy Way and Goreway Drive and is buttressed by a series of concrete piers ranging in height from five to 25 metres. Designing the elevated route presented a special challenge for completing the project, said Barnett. “One of our challenges constructing this, other than the fact we’re way up in the air, was working around all the roadways,” he said. “We needed lots of co-ordination, not just for road closures but working around utilities like power lines.”

Seeking ‘Well-Dressed Bandit’ Rogers-Keele bank among those hit by suspect: police

IT ’S OUR BIRTHDAY...

T E T G H U E GIFT! O Y T U B

Andrew Palamarchuk apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com

Police hope security camera images along with a cash reward will help identify an armed bank robber dubbed The Well-Dressed Bandit. Police believe the man is responsible for four holdups across the city in a three-week period. “In his very first robbery, he was dressed in a suit and tie like he just left a job interview,” Staff Insp. Mike Earl said at a news conference at police headquarters March 4. “He approached the bank counter, presented a holdup note and produced a handgun, making a demand for cash. The bank employees complied, and he fled the scene.” That first robbery took place in the Rogers Road and Keele Street area around 10:35 a.m. Oct. 23. The next happened at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 6 near Queens Plate Drive and Hwy. 27. At 4:25 p.m. Nov. 10, police believe the same man robbed a bank near College and Grace streets. His last holdup happened 30 minutes later at Bloor Street and Dovercourt Road.

Police have released this security camera image of a man they believe is responsible for a series of bank robberies.

The Canadian Bankers Association is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the suspect’s arrest and conviction. “Our investigative leads have dried up, and we’re now looking for the public’s assistance,” said Earl, the unit commander of the holdup squad. “Somebody out there, some family member, some coworker, they may very well recognize this individual and be able to profit on the reward.” The suspect is white, 45 to 60 years old and 5’11” to 6’2” tall and was carrying a tan attache case during the robberies. “Most bank robberies are still committed with notes, and we believe that a lot of them are unarmed,” Earl said. “This individual went further and

actually produced a gun and made the employees aware that he is armed.” Of the 427 bank robberies across Canada last year, 156 involved a weapon. The bandit in this case pointed his semi-automatic handgun toward a teller during one of the holdups. “He actually pulls it right out, and we do capture it on video,” said Earl. The suspect kept the weapon in his attache case during two of the occurrences. “On one occasion he actually had it tucked in his waistband, and he showed the butt of the gun,” Earl said. Anyone with information is asked to call the holdup squad at 416-808-7350 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).

Parents Reaching Out grant available The provincial government is encouraging parents to get involved in their children’s education through the Parents Reaching Out grant. The grant funds initiatives that identify reasons why parents might not be engaged in their children’s education. It also works to find local solutions to the barriers. Some of the initiatives from the 2014-2015 school year

include: providing outreach to parents from diverse backgrounds, increasing parent engagement in isolated communities, and making school Deadline boards more welcoming to parents. More than 2,200 programs were funded in the last school year. Pa s t p r o g r a m s h a v e included workshops for par-

ents that focus on homework strategies and supporting school work at home, as well as workshops on how parents can effectively communicate with their children’s school. May 19 is the cut-off date for the 2015-2016 school year grant applications. School councils, parent organizations and school boards can apply online at www.edu. gov.on.ca/eng/parents/reaching

NOTICE OF INTENDED DECLARATION Pursuant to section 176 of Ontario Regulation 30/11 made under the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002 Re: Burial site at St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 49 George Street (East side of George Street between Church and King Streets) in the former Village of Weston, City of Toronto, Province of Ontario TAKE NOTICE that on September 30, 2014 the discovery of a burial site – burials in coffins and fragmentary human remains, was reported to the Registrar, Funeral, Burial, and Cremation Services Act, 2002. The human remains were discovered during an archaeological assessment to determine if burials remained in situ in this 1853 cemetery which was closed to further burials in 1895 and built upon in the 1950s. A Stage 3 archaeological investigation documented 153 graves of which 147 contained intact burials. The remains from the other six graves appear to have been exhumed. The Registrar hereby gives notice of the intention to declare the discovered site a ‘burial ground’ and invites representatives of the persons whose remains are interred in the burial ground to contact the Registrar within two weeks after March 12, 2015. Once identified, the representatives will negotiate a site disposition agreement with the Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto, the landowner. Dated at Toronto, this 5th day of March, 2015 Michael D’Mello, Registrar Funeral, Burial, and Cremation Services Act, 2002 Ministry of Government and Consumer Services Cemeteries Regulation Unit 5775 Yonge Street, 15th Floor Toronto, ON M7A 2E5 tel: 416-326-8393 fax: 416-326-8406

Tory sets tone in first 100 days

O

ne hundred is a nice round number and instinctively, one thinks that if you have 100 days at a job or with a new employee or dating a new paramour, it ought to be enough time to tell if things are working out. It’s fair to say that 100 days into our four-year relationship with Mayor John Tory, things are working out. The former provincial Progressive Conservative leader and radio talk show host has set a standard of behaviour and leadership that’s pretty comforting in the moment and shows potential in the future. The phrase “unlike his predecessor” could show up in sentences throughout this column, and I’ll try to just use it this once, because the fact is that Tory’s success so far is made all the greater by the contrast with what went before. Since taking office, Tory has shown a good-

david nickle the city natured work ethic and a willingness to modify his preconceived agenda based even on inconvenient facts. Tory’s only interest outside of his new job appears to be his wife, Barbara: there are no afternoon field trips for football coaching or any other games. And beyond those baseline virtues? Speaking with reporters on his 101st day, Tory summed up his sense of his own accomplishments and aspirations. “This was not going to be an administration of ideology and slogans… I hope what people see of it so far and I hope that what they do see is that it’s an administration of common sense, an administration of compassion, an administration that serves all the people and has a balanced city government.” That is actually a pretty

fair self-assessment as far as it goes. My, but he is green, though. Tory is the first person to hold the mayor’s office in Toronto with no municipal experience. He is easily tripped up when he chairs a meeting, and naïve when it comes to intergovernmental negotiations. Sometimes this is inconvenient, sometimes it creates a real problem. Tory misread the mood of the provincial government woefully when he left a meeting with Premier Kathleen Wynne believing that the $86-million hole left by the end to housing pooling might be filled. In dropping that ball and deciding not to raise property taxes to cover the shortfall this year, Tory risks turning the next few hundred days in office into a much larger challenge than he signed up for.
