York actor takes director’s role in ‘Chile Con Carne’ HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com

or Marilo Nunez, switching roles from lead actor to director for the play Chile Con Carne 14 years later was one of the best decisions she’s ever made. “I understand the play even more now, I love directing,” said the York resident. “I think I denied myself this position in the theatre because I was scared. I feel so much more at home as director than I did as an actor.” The reprise of Chile Con

Carne comes just in time for the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Chilean coup d’etat, and allows Nunez to sit in the director’s chair this time around. Rewind to 1996: Nunez first got involved in the play after she graduated from Ryerson University’s theatre school. She had recently seen Guillermo Verdecchia’s play American Borders and it struck a chord with her. “He was a big inspiration to me because his play was the first one I had ever seen >>>actor, page 6
