Rawlinson crossing guard retires ‘He’s a school hero,’ says one student

After 18 years helping elementary students at Rawlinson Community School safely cross the busy intersection of

Oakwood and Earlsdale avenues, Mahadeo “Hare” Ramkissoon is putting down his stop sign. But the veteran crossing guard didn’t leave his last day on the job without the kids showing their appreciation for what he’s done. Students gathered outside on the school field Friday with large thank-you cards and signs while affectionately chanting his nickname “Harry”. “He’s a school hero,” said Grade 6
student Kiara Silva. “Without him, who knows what would happen to us.” Saige Mclean agreed, adding he’s also a very nice man. “He’s very loving,” the Grade 3 student said. “And he always says hi.” Parent Renee James worked alongside principal Andrea McPherson to arrange the celebratory event for Ramkissoon, who has worked at the same intersection since 1997.
“Rain or shine, he’s always been there,” said James, whose son crosses the street to go to school. “He’s such a shy charmer of a guy. He’s our Harry.” Ramkissoon, who previously worked long hours as an assistant auto body shop manager, said he enjoyed his crossing guard duties better because he got to work outside and breathe the fresh air. “And I had a lot of time with >>>CROSSING, page 8

Metrolinx to add GO station at Eglinton Avenue West on Barrie line

Station to be integrated with new LRT station at Eglinton-Caledonia DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com Choo choo! The train will soon be stopping in York. Metrolinx, the provincial agency in charge of regional transportation plans in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Areas, has announced it will be adding a GO Transit station on the Barrie GO line at Eglinton Avenue West and Caledonia Road. The new Caledonia GO station will be integrated with the future Caledonia station on the Eglinton Crosstown LRT line, which is under construction. A fully accessible pedestrian bridge will span over the Barrie rail corridor to connect the Eglinton Crosstown LRT and GO stations, Metrolinx said. The GO and LRT stations will give people a quick and easy way to access both services and increase the transit options in the community, the agency said. “This is great news for local residents. I know our community will welcome more transit options that reduce commute times,” said Cristina Martins, MPP for Davenport, in a news release. “With easy access to the future Eglinton Crosstown LRT, this proposed new GO station would improve the integration of two major transit networks here in the GTHA,” said Bruce McCuaig, president and CEO of Metrolinx, in the release. “We are committed to

strengthening connections between our regional and local systems to make it easier for people to choose transit first.” Early designs of the Caledonia Crosstown station show the LRT station on the west side of the GO rail tracks, just west of Croham Road, on the north side of Eglinton Avenue, two blocks west of Caledonia. A new bus loop would provide passengers with easy access to both the LRT and GO services. Currently, the Barrie GO train’s only Toronto stop outside of Union Station is at York University in the city’s north end. Metrolinx did not provide a construction schedule on when the GO station will become operational. The Crosstown LRT has a planned service start date of 2020. An environmental assessment (EA) is scheduled to begin this summer for the GO station.

This work will be completed and all lanes restored before the start of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, which will run July 10 to 26, and Aug. 7 to 15, respectively. Work will begin on the east side of Dufferin Street, resulting in the closure of one lane of northbound traffic. When the work moves to the west side of the road, one lane of
southbound traffic will be closed. Work will take place from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday to Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends as required. Know your city with Heritage Toronto tours W
hether you’re a resident or a tourist, how much do you know about the City of Toronto? Let’s go one step further: how much do you know about the city’s rich history? The answers vary from a lot to very little; however, even those who know a lot about Toronto could certainly use a refreshing experience. So with that in mind, now is the time to take one of the many guided tours offered by Heritage Toronto, slated to run through to Sunday, Oct. 4, and get a city refresher. From Etobicoke to Scarborough, North York to all the pockets in the downtown core, the city is alive with a rich and diverse history, making any day or weekend tour an experience every Torontonian should have. “Heritage Toronto’s fun and our view informative tours give citizens the chance to see Toronto’s in a way they Head outside neighbourhoods never have before,” said Heritage and explore Toronto executive director, Francisco Alvarez. Toronto If you’re looking to get started quickly, May is Asian Heritage Month with tours that take you through Chinatown, Korea Town, and the city’s Filipino community. In Etobicoke you can take in the ‘Hurricane Hazel Revisited’ tour. The ‘Guild Park’ tour talks about the long and rich artistic history of the southeast Scarborough area. In North York, why not take in the ‘Downsview Park’ tour? City neighbourhoods are also the focus of tours such as ‘Leslieville: Orange & Green’. There are also bike tours, music history tours, and tours such as ‘Before Toronto’ that take participants on an archaeological bus tour of the city’s first 13,000 years. Spring has sprung and summer is just around the corner – even fall has tours to offer – so why not take full advantage of our great city – voted the No. 1 place to live in the world to live by The Economist magazine. Toronto has so much to offer, including some fascinating history that’s well worth learning more about. So head out and experience Toronto in ways you’ve never experienced before. column
It’s official: spring has finally sprung During the winter, whining about the temperature had become so contagious it seemed like just about everybody in my neighborhood was hiding inside because of the cold. Heck, I saw a tumbleweed roll down my street it was so empty. I mean that. An actual tumbleweed. I should know. I was the one who tossed it. I did it many times, in fact. It was just me and that old tumbleweed all by our little lonesomes for all of February and most of March. I was getting pretty good at rolling that sucker, too, I must say. I had a mean knuckler that would have made R.A. Dickey envious. I had a deceptive slider that would have given Josh Donaldson, Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion fits. I had a mesmerizing change up, a wicked curve
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY ball and a nasty fastball. There would be no calls to the bullpen to replace me, no siree. I was in it for the long haul. I was the starter and the closer all rolled into one. My exploits did not go unnoticed. I was being followed closely on Sportsnet, TSN and ESPN. Fans all over the world were downloading my app. I had gone viral on YouTube. There was talk of a duet with Miley. The Donald was calling to talk to me about being on Celebrity Apprentice. Yeah, life was good, alright. Alas, nothing lasts forever. Before long that wimpy tumbleweed started whin-
ing it was too cold for him, too, and he disappeared inside along with everyone else. It was like a ghost town around here after that, I tell ya. Then when spring got off to a late start it was more of the same, barren feeling outside. The flowers refused to come out. The early birds slept in. The squirrels were interested in gathering dust, not nuts. To add insult to injury? Even the owls didn’t give a hoot. Then seemingly out of nowhere, temperatures picked up dramatically this week and have actually passed the seasonal averages and suddenly everyone and everything has come out of hibernation. The flowers are finally starting to make an appearance. The early birds are giving those worms a run for their
money. The squirrels are collecting overtime. And the dogs are barking up a storm. But it’s the people who are really standing out. I honestly can’t remember it ever being so crowded in these parts. It looks good on the neighbourhood to see so many out and about. Best of all, those winter scowls are nowhere to be seen. Everybody is smiling. Well, not everyone. The tumbleweed seems a little down in the dumps with nothing to do anymore. Poor guy. So, if you’ll excuse, I’ll take him to Tim Hortons for a tumble tumble. That’ll snap him out of it in no time. transit Diamond separation meeting wDavenport Metrolinx will hold a public meeting next week to share its plan for separating the Davenport Diamond rail crossing. It’s already been reported Metrolinx will launch an Environmental Assessment in late summer for building an overpass to elevate GO Transit rail service over CP Rail freight train traffic which meet at the crossing. Metrolinx established a resident panel to offer suggestions for transforming the lands freed up below the overpass, which could be used for new public space. The meeting takes place Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Davenport Perth Neighbourhood Centre Visit www.metrolinx. com/RERDavenport PRAISE FOR BYFORD’S OF TRANSIT wUSE
Breaking news: a public official was spotted riding the TTC. That may not seem newsworthy, particularly since the official in question is TTC CEO Andy Byford,
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT who makes regular use of the Better Way, doesn’t own a car and has never had a driver’s licence. But after a Reddit Toronto user spotted Byford on the subway speaking to riders last Friday – stopping even to pick up some trash off the subway floor – it was enough to spawn a message thread (www.tinyurl.com/ llbcjpy) with dozens of comments praising the TTC’s top official. MINISTRY chided FOR ROAD CARE wTRANSPORT
The Ontario Ministry of Transportation promised swift changes following a report by the auditor general critical of its decision to contract out winter maintenance to the private sector. Released last week, Bonnie Lysyk’s report concludes contracting out work to the private sector has led to reduced expenses for the Ministry, but at the cost of a steady decline in mainte-
nance standards. In a statement, the ministry said the findings align with its internal review of winter maintenance standards and that it would report within 60 days on how to implement changes. FINISHING TOUCHES UNION PLATFORM wFOR
The TTC announced it will complete construction of the second subway platform at Union Station in coming weeks. The station was closed again last weekend as work crews completed final touches to the Yonge line platform ahead of the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. It will be the last time the station is closed before the Games begin in July due to the construction. The platform opened last year in an unfinished state. Its final design includes an “art wall” that doubles as a glass divider spanning the length of the Yonge and University platforms. Rahul Gupta is The Guardian’s transit reporter. Tory needs to talk austerity
A
t the start of the whirling vortex of chaos (otherwise known as the May meeting of Toronto Council) next year’s budget seems very far off. It is not, of course. While council and the city deal with the ramifications of open-season on food trucks, a new city manager, the quest for a just taxi license and gender balance on the Toronto Transit Commission, the city’s 2016 budget looms large – larger than is typical, in fact, thanks to the odd way that council decided to balance the 2015 budget. This was in March, when council approved a 2.75 per cent property tax increase for homeowners, and filled a $60-million shortfall by effectively borrowing from the city’s own capital financing capacity in future years. Services were generally sustained or even enhanced, taxpayers were mollified with a rateof-inflation increase, and the pain, Mayor John Tory
david nickle the city promised, would come later. Tory also promised to let Toronto know in the coming weeks exactly how he would deal with the 2016 gap between what it costs to run the city as it stands, and the diminishing amount of money actually available to the city. Although Tory would not use the words, it all suggested that in 2016, Torontonians would be looking at some form of service cuts. Given that, it’s understandable that Tory has not yet made good on that one promise, to explain how he’ll balance things. So far, the Tory mayoralty has been a good-news affair. His announcements generally aren’t about telling people what they can’t have, but what he will provide. Very soon, our mayor is
going to have to start talking about more difficult things: strategies for cutting waste in the city’s administrative bureaucracy, cuts and fee increases. Tory has so far avoided talking about fees very much, effectively ruling out the operationally sensitive but politically difficult application of “revenue tools” such as road tolls and consumption taxes. Without a willingness to increase or enact those things, the city is left with only one option: austerity. The city doesn’t have a terrible record on measured austerity. In general, residents seem to like their services and react with a certain amount of organized pique when they are threatened. When the matter finally comes up, it will show even a rough-and-tumble council meeting such as this week’s for the honeymoon that it in fact is.

Pearson Airport quickly outgrowing its GTA footprint RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com The Union Pearson (UP) Express will soon enter service and offer a high-speed travel option to the airport, but it’s still not nearly enough to address congestion levels. That’s one of the early conclusions of a study by consulting firm McKinsey and Company on planning options for Toronto Pearson International Airport, which will reach its passenger capacity within three decades. McKinsey planning director Bruce Simpson presented the study’s preliminary findings as part of a panel discussion at the Toronto Region Board of Trade Monday on prospects for Pearson’s long-term future, which include the need to have reliable mass transportation options to the airport.

Expected to reach passenger capacity within 30 years
“
Economic development has now pushed us to the point the airport has to grow to serve the needs of the region. – Howard Eng, president and CEO, Greater Toronto Airports Authority
Pearson’s operations, attributed the rise to global finance acting as an economic driver for the Toronto region. “The world is changing, it’s changing fast,” Eng said. “Economic development has now pushed us to the point the airport has to grow to serve the needs of the region.” Eng said Pearson recorded nearly a seven per cent increase in passenger volumes last year alone, with the rise credited predominantly to international travel. At this rate of increase even conservative projections have Pearson at 64 million annual passengers within 20 years. Thomas Bosco from the New York and New Jersey Port Authority, which runs five airports including JFK and LaGuardia as well as bridge and tunnel connections between the two U.S. states, said operations were divided into specialized functions, with smaller airports serving
particular needs. LaGuardia, for example, serves as the primary destination for shorter flights and for convenient entry into Manhattan while JFK handles the bulk of international travel. Like Pearson, he said the Port Authority’s operations are growing in record amounts every year, with a projected 180 million passengers by 2034. To meet the demand, Bosco said significant investment was needed from the U.S. government. “Unfortunately, given the current state of our infrastructure, we’re not going to meet that demand,” he said. Nor mand Boivin, a Montrealer who has served as the chief operating officer for Heathrow Airport for four years, admitted the privately run UK airport is woefully underserving its passengers. Even with nearly 95 million passengers per year the
airport is still operating below its capacity and Boivin admitted competitors like Dubai International Airport have passed Heathrow when it comes to travel volumes. Boivin said the future for one of the world’s busiest airports lies in constructing a third runway at Heathrow at a cost of 17 billion pounds which would also require substantial transformation the equivalent of Toronto eliminating the Hwys. 427/409 and 401 ramps to the airport and subsuming the municipality of Milton. He urged Toronto not do as London has “planning the future for 30 years” but come up with a decisive and wellthought out solution to deal with future demand. When it comes to funding airport expansion ULI Toronto director Richard Joy said most of the money can come from private funding such as user fees. But he said infrastructure like better surface transportation options will need a government commitment.

Schedule released for Pan Am Path Art Relay DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com
EVENTS
It’s 84 kilometres long, stretching from the edge of Brampton to the mouth of the Rouge River, and this spring and summer, the Pan Am Path will wind past rivers, lake and streams showcasing both Toronto’s natural beauty and the creative spirit of the city’s artists. The path follows the Humber River through the central waterfront, up the Don River and Tailor Creek and through Scarborough to Orton Park, Morningside Park, and finally through Port Union to Rouge Beach. Eventually, with money from the City of Toronto and the Toronto Foundation, it will be connected. This spring and summer, it will be home to the Pan Am Path Art Relay, running May 16 to Aug. 15, moving a relay of art installations and events along the path. “It’s a roving, rolling excitement along the trail,” said event organizer Devon Orstrom. “We’ve been really conscious about that, making sure we bring the partners together to have that rich network across the city.” Artists from communities across the city will be putting together shows throughout the spring.
w On May 16, the Spring! Launch event will take place at the University of Guelph-Humber and the Centre for Urban Ecology from 1 to 5 p.m., with various programs including a bicyclepowered music festival. w On May 23, the Pine Point Park and Arena will launch Freedom Fridayz from 1 to 7 p.m. The event will showcase visual art, spoken word/poetry, hip hop, theatre, music, dance and other forms of expression. w On May 30, Activate! Hospitality training program doesn’t just prepare candidates for jobs, it builds careers
WHEN CHILDREN’S MIRACLE NETWORK ASKS FOR YOUR HELP, WE GET IT.
When you donate to Children’s Miracle Network, you give kids at SickKids, like Liam, every chance to get better.
PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE THE MIRACLES ARE.
There are many reasons why a career in hospitality is the right move. To begin with, it’s not your typical 9-to-5 desk job. Every day is different in the hospitality business and it offers a wide range of jobs and a great career path. The Learning Enrichment Foundation (LEF) in partnership with Ontario Tourism Education Corporation (OTEC) is pleased to offer a free 14-week training course. Ready-to-Work: Hospitality Career Pathways is designed to equip participants with the knowledge, skills and certifications to successfully gain employment in the sector. Many people who choose a career in the hospitality industry have the opportunity to put their creativity to work and think outside the box every day. The program offered at LEF is unique because it provides, job search assistance, career
coaching and support to launch your career. Jan Christianson, Lead Facilitator at LEF says, “For people who want to train for a rewarding career in the hospitality sector, there can be no better way than to gain the skills and industry-recognized certifications offered in this program. LEF’s goal is to help our participants attain a sustainable
livelihood, and that means that we stay involved long after the program ends.” The first Ready-to-Work session begins May 19 at LEF’s 116 Industry St. location. For more information and to see if you qualify for this free program please contact Marlene at 416-760-2551 or msalmon@lefca.org.

Dementia expert Teepa Snow to speak at The Caregiver Show DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com Respected dementia educator Teepa Snow has a message for caregivers: take time to take care of yourself. “This is incredibly stressful and challenging, and it gets more so as the disease progresses. You have to learn to take care of yourself and recognize you have needs. You can’t not need something,” she said. “You have to pause and make sure you’re doing OK.” Sn ow s a i d t h e re a re resources out there to help, but caregivers will need to seek them out themselves. One such place to seek out support is at The Caregiver Show on Saturday, May 30 at Centennial College in Scarborough, where Snow will be a guest speaker. Admission is free. She said it’s a huge plus to have a number of resources, which can offer support through the various stages of the caregiver’s journey, all under one roof.

Teepa Snow will be a guest speaker at The Caregiver Show on May 30.
Most people, she said, don’t know how to access the resources they need nor do they know how to look for them until they’re so far along they’re desperate for it. However, by that time comes, they won’t have time to look for it because they are busy taking care of a person. Besides finding helpful resources, caregivers will be among others in situations like their own, which can help

relieve feelings of isolation. “It makes a huge difference because if I know there are other people out there like me then I don’t feel like my person is doing it to me deliberately and I don’t believe there isn’t any hope or help,” Snow said. Snow is considered one of America’s leading educators on dementia. A registered occupational therapist for more than 30 years, her philosophy reflects her education, work experience, available medical research and her first-hand care giving interactions. Her early days as a caregiver were spent taking care of her grandfather who had vascular dementia. She realized she was a good caregiver and went to college and then began working with people with dementia, and has picked up more skills along the way, which she now passes on to others. She has three main points she wants people to hear when she will speak at the local show. She wants caregivers to recognize the need to take care
details w WHAT: The Caregiver Show, a one-day event of education and networking opportunities to provide family caregivers the resources they need and more w WHEN: Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. w WHERE: Athletics Wellness Centre at Centennial College’s Progress Campus, 941 Progress Ave. of themselves, particularly if they’re going to be in it for the long-haul; caregivers need to understand what is happening to the people they are caring for; and that having the right skills to care for someone does matter. Of the last point, she said, it’s not enough to want to do something. Caregivers need to know how to do what they need to do. They will need to learn those skills. Snow said it’s easy to think dementia is memory loss, but it’s actually much more severe than that. “It’s hard to picture what all that means unless somebody helps you through that,” she said. “Most individuals don’t get that kind of support and skill and knowledge build-
ing that they actually need to do this. It’s like a marathon race.” Two-thirds of caregivers are women, she said, and it could be a spouse or child of the person, or even a friend. For each, the dynamics are different, she said. “With friends, it’s really different. There comes a point in the relationship where it’s ‘Ooh, it’s getting way intense,’” she said. It will start with helping with groceries, doing banking and cleaning the house and other minor errands. “And then, before this is all over, there’s going to be all kinds of personal care and intimate care, getting in and out of bed, and on and off a toilet. Nobody is really think-
ing that when they’re thinking its memory problems.” She said care giving is more than any one person can do, and caregivers need to learn how to ask for help. “Do not try to do this alone. I don’t care how much you love somebody. It’s not about love. This thing will take you down if you try to do it alone,” she said. She reminds caregivers to breathe. “Recognize the importance of taking five minutes and finding the thing that makes you feel like you’re a human being again and you have value. That could be journaling, it could be reading, it could be out walking. You just need to give yourself five minutes to recharge your battery,” she said. Along with Snow, health and nutrition expert Rose Reisman will also be a guest speaker at The Caregiver Show.
