she’s bringing them home to Toronto for a concert. The local concert of the Red Ride Tour, which travels through a number of provinces and even in the U.S., will be at
downtown’s Monarch Tavern, 12 Clinton St., on Thursday, May 28. Derksen is one of four musicians on the bill for the local show. “People should come to the
concert to experience something that is new as well as old,” the Vaughan Road resident said. “It’s new in that there’s aboriginal cellists and violinists, and old as in we’re playing genres
that are really familiar.” While she’s a classically trained musician, she performs music that she calls electro cello, a mixture of genres that >>>CRIS, page 7

Y
ork’s Latin jazz singer-songwriter Amanda Martinez is joining some well-known female performers for a night of comedy and musical cabaret. The 13th annual Funny Girls & Dynamic Divas show is happening Thursday, May 21 at the Glen Gould Studio, inside the CBC building, 250 Front St. W. The reception is at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. “It’s always a really fun evening and always an honour to be included,” said Martinez, who has been part of the annual show for a few years. R and B diva Jully Black, and soprano saxophonist, flautist and pianist Jane Bunnett, both Juno Award winners, will also perform. Comedy legend Sandra Shamas will also entertain the audience. Man charged with fraud after fake tickets sold on Kijiji A Toronto man accused of selling fake entertainment tickets online is facing almost 100 fraud-related charges. Police said a 24-year-old man purchased several entertainment tickets online through Kijiji Monday, May 11; the tickets turned out to be fake. Michael Heys-Walsh, 24, has been charged with 95 counts of possession of identification data, along with other fraud and drug charges. Police believe there may be more victims and are asking them to contact Det. Const. Marco Toledo-Castro at 416-808-1340 or marco. toledo-castro@torontopolice.on.ca Anyone with informa-

Police are investigating whether a man found unconscious early Tuesday was a victim of a robbery or an assault. Police were called to St. Clair Avenue and Alberta Avenue, east of Oakwood Avenue, at 2:49 a.m. “Witnesses say that they saw two male suspects who fled the scene,” said Const. Victor Kwong, adding police are pulling surveillance video from the area in an effort to determine what happened. The unresponsive man was
taken to hospital where officers are standing by to speak to him when he comes to. Anyone with information is asked to call 13 Division at 416-808-1300. police start wearing cameras wToronto
After months of training, 100 Toronto police officers began wearing cameras on Monda as part of a year-long pilot project. T h re e d i f f e re n t cameras, ranging from $600 to $1000 each, will be tested. The officers involved are members of the TAVIS rapid response team, traffic services motor squad, 55 Division primary response unit and 43 Division com-
munity response unit. Police have developed procedures and guidelines on when the cameras are to be activated. The officers have also been trained on issues of privacy and human rights. The pilot project costs $500,000, which includes the cameras, the software and the secure storage. Two of the camera models are set up with a 30-second pre-event buffer, meaning when the officer activates the device it will also capture the previous 30 seconds of video, but not audio. Each camera can record for 32 hours. Officers don’t have the ability to alter, edit or delete any recording.

ssuming the role of caregiver for a loved one may seem a natural decision when a friend or family member is struck with dementia, or acute or chronic health problems. But it can be a long, burdensome and isolated journey and those who make these sacrifices need to make sure they’re getting the supports they need. That’s why we at Metroland Media Toronto, in partnership with Downsizing Divas, are once again bringing The Caregiver Show to our city on May 30. Presented by Saint Elizabeth Health Care, which offers at-home services for family caregivers, the free show is a chance for caregivers to discover that they’re not alone. There’s a wealth of resources available to help make what can be a difficult job that much easier to undertake. According to the Alzheimer our view Society of Canada, the physical psychological toll on family May 30 show and caregivers is considerable – with dedicated to 15 to 32 per cent experiencing depression at one point or caregivers another. While people care for others out of a sense of personal responsibility and love, they need to be prepared to deal with the stress involved. At this year’s show, hear from speaker Teepa Snow, who has more than 33 years of experience in geriatrics, and is an occupational therapist currently working as a dementia care and dementia education specialist. Health and wellness expert Rose Reisman will also be speaking at the show about the importance of taking care of one’s own health and nutrition. The Caregiver Show is your chance to connect with others sharing similar circumstances and learn tips on how to navigate opportunities for government support. Discover that you’re not alone – in fact, you’re among almost eight million family caregivers in Canada. Get first-hand advice from experts, explore products and see demonstrations from our participating organizations. And don’t miss the Rest and Relaxation Zone, to help you replenish your spirit and energy levels. It takes a hero to dedicate oneself to the care of another, but even heroes need support sometimes. The show is Saturday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Centennial College Progress Campus’ Athletics Wellness Centre, 941 Progress Ave. To register for the free event, visit www.caregivershow.ca

All eyes, and feet, on the $50-million jackpot To join the office Lotto Max pool or not to join. That’s the question. The jackpot stands at $50 million for the fifth week in a row. With 33 extra $1 million “maxmillion” prizes also up for grabs Allen has stepped up to try and resurrect the one in our company. He’s been on a roll. Actually it’s a Tim Hortons croissant that fell on his chair. Anyhow, I’m the lone holdout. Allen: “So? Last chance to pick up the rear on our happy dance line when we win. What’s it gonna be Jamie, in or out? Just so you know, after considerable debate the group has decided to do the Boot Scootin’ Boogie.” Jamie: “Really? Boot Scoot AND Boogie?” Allen: “And not necessarily in that order. It could just as easily be Boogie Scootin’ Boot. It depends on how we feel when the cameras are turned on.” Jamie: “That’s very enticing, Allen, but to be perfectly honest, I have my heart set
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY on doing the Funky Chicken when I win. And I’m not talking genetically modified Funky Chicken, either. When I hit the dance floor it’s the real deal or nothing.” Allen: “I hear ya. But back to the matter at hand. So what do you say?” Jamie: “I think I’ll pass. But thanks for thinking of me just the same.” Allen: “Do you mind if I ask what you have against $50 million?” Jamie: “I don’t mind at all. With 24 in your group, last I heard, if I come aboard each share would only be one-25th of $50 million, or a paltry $2 million.” Allen: “Actually, since we last spoke, we’ve more than doubled that number courtesy of accounting, HR, production support and the executive suite. You’d bring the total to an even 50. So each share would actually
drop to $1,000,000.” Jamie: “That’s it? A lousy million is all I can expect to get?” Allen: “One million big ones each is nothing to sneeze at where I come from.” Jamie: “Where I come from, that was a cough, not a sneeze.” Allen: “I stand corrected. A million big ones is nothing to cough at. That better?” Jamie: “Hardly. That’s if we’re the only winner. What if there’s more than one lucky ticket sold? Somebody from Saskatchewan always seems to win part of every big jackpot. Usually a guy named Herb.” Allen: “So, if there are two winning tickets we still get $500,000 per person. Boo hoo. We’ll cry all the way to the bank.” Jamie: “And how much am I expected to kick in for the privilege of becoming a measly 500 hundredthousandaire, pray tell?” Allen: “We’re putting in $6 each per ticket, when you
add on the encore.” Jamie: “Like I said, I’ll pass.” Allen: “Any reason in particular?” Jamie: “Yeah. I got a way better offer. Herb invited me to join his pool. It would be just me and him in it and all I’d have to fork over to join is $5. He doesn’t play encore. That means if our ticket is the only winner we pocket $25 million each and if there are two winning ones I still pocket a not to shabby $12.5 million.” Allen: “You really think you’re going to walk away with those kind of sums if you team up with him?” Jamie: “Of course not, silly billy. Obviously you haven’t been attention. No matter how much I get I won’t be walking away at all. I’ll be Funky Chickening away, baby.” Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. Cris Derksen plays hometown gig May 28 >>>from page 1 leans towards rock ’n’ roll. The Alberta-born Cree musician had lived in Vancouver for more than a decade before coming to Toronto about a year ago, and where she currently calls home. It was five years ago that her best friend, Haida/Cree singersongwriter Kristi Lane Sinclair asked Derksen to go on tour and the pair traveled from Vancouver to Toronto, doing shows along the way. Now in its fifth year, the Red Ride Tour is featuring approximately a dozen musicians (not everyone at every show) and has a wide range of music styles, from grunge and indie rock to softer sounds such as blues-rock and folk. While the musicians are of aboriginal descent, the music is accessible to everyone. “The tour brings together the aboriginal community as well as the non-aboriginal community just to, A, have a good time at a show, and B, making new friends. It bridges the communities,” Derksen

said. “It’s a totally growing entity... We’re basically building a community across Canada of indigenous musicians coming together and playing a show for the community.” At the Monarch Tavern concert, Derksen will perform a solo set of her newer music. She said she’ll start the show soft and build up in intensity as the show progresses towards the harder rock sounds. Derksen has multiple Toronto concer ts scheduled for this summer, including an Aug. 7 show at the Harbourfront Centre to release her third album Orchestral Powwow. This CD features traditional powwow music mixed in with a chamber symphony. This music will not be featured during the Red Ride Tour as it requires a large band to perform.

York residen Cris Derksen is on the Red Ride tour, which is making a stop in Toronto this month.
The city is asking residents to share their recipes, using a local star ingredient each month, to build Toronto’s largest collection of recipes online. Called The Local Dish, the goal of the initiative, which will be hosted on Pinterest, is to encourage residents to choose local food more often, and to educate people about the abundance of fresh and delicious food grown in Ontario. Each month, The Local Dish will select an “all-star” veggie or fruit – one that is abundantly available in Ontario at that time – and invite residents to share their favourite recipes that feature the ingredient in a prominent way. Residents who submit recipes will be eligible for monthly prizes. The all-star for the month of May is asparagus. The Local Dish is the latest addition to Live Green Toronto’s suite of programs.

City Mosaic sends young people on diversity scavenger hunt of Toronto Event starts and ends at Mel Lastman Square CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com Hundreds of young people will be exploring the city in an expedition race this Saturday with the opening and closing ceremonies taking place at Mel Lastman Square. The 11th annual City
Mosaic organized by Across U-hub, a charitable community organization primarily serving youth aged 16 to 23, begins at 9 a.m. with dignitaries including MPP Michael Chan and Toronto District School Board Education director Donna Quan expected to attend. “This is our first year starting at Mel Lastman Square,” said Jacky Lau, Across U-Hub external relations officer. The City Mosaic event began in 2005 to provide a fun way for youth to discover the
multicultural diversity of the city, especially for newcomers to the country, Lau said. “It helps them understand different cultures in the neighbourhood,” Lau added. Teams of four will be given about 100 questions as a guide to find six checkpoints across Toronto. Past checkpoints included Kensington Market, Toronto City Hall, Chinatown, St. Lawrence Market, Cabbagetown and Scarborough Town Centre. The closing ceremonies
are scheduled for 6 p.m. with donated prizes such as a weekend getaway golf package to be awarded to the winning team. While registration is closed to participate in the race, the public is invited to attend a carnival taking place from 4 to 6 p.m. at Mel Lastman Square, 5100 Yonge St., where young entrepreneurs and non-profit groups will have information booths set up.

Trek for Teens Day Saturday in support of homeless youth Hundreds of teens from across the Greater Toronto Area are getting set to take part in an Amazing Racestyle challenge through the streets of downtown Toronto to raise awareness for homeless youth.
The event, hosted by the Trek for Teens Foundation, will see teams of youth take on a variety of challenges in the city. It will start and end at Nathan Phillips Square, which will be home to a special fun fair.
Trek for Teens was founded by University of Toronto grad Michael Bazzocchi, who wanted to give teens a chance to make a difference in the city while pursuing their passions. Participants will be asked
to collect pledges, with funds raised going toward charitable organizations such as Covenant House, Horizons for Youth, and Youth Without Shelter. For more information, visit www.trekforteens.com
Public school board to create integrity commissioner office CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com Toronto District School Board (TDSB) trustees voted last week to approve a work plan to create an independent Office of Integrity Commissioner to improve transparency, accountability and professionalism at the board. “We are the first board in Ontario to establish an (office of ) integrity commissioner,” said TDSB chair Shaun Chen at the May 13 board meeting. “It’s a move that will promote respect and adherence to good governance practices, codes of conduct and high standards of ethical and professional behaviour.” Janet Leiper, former integrity commissioner for the City of Toronto, was brought on by the board earlier this month to help develop a work plan for retaining an integrity commissioner. “I’m here to help lay the foundation,” she addressed
the trustees over a Skype conference call. The first step, Leiper outlined in the report she submitted to the board last week, is to evaluate and recommend necessary changes to existing policies and procedures to ensure there is a framework that guides the integrity commissioner. That would entail drafting an accountability framework, reviewing the existing Code of Conduct and creating a complaint protocol. Draft policy amendments are expected to be brought back to the board for approval at the next regular board meeting on June 17. If approved, staff would be able to conduct a search for an integrity commissioner in the early fall. The report also noted compensation for the integrity commissioner position is anticipated to be in line with the market rates currently paid by municipalities for part-time, fee-for-service integrity commissioners.

Myseum celebrates Toronto’s history, diversity, culture Pop-up events to highlight stories from the past and visions of the future
and I are here today in the hopes that this initiative will illuminate our history, honour our diversity and contribute to shaping our future,” Blake said. She and her husband provided seed funding and they and the board are looking for partnerships and sponsorships to cover costs. Those costs should be small, given that there will be no actual building site for the Myseum. “I respect all attempts (at creating a Toronto-themed museum) that came before, but we decided early on that if we didn’t focus on a building and a capital campaign for that, we’d have more flexibility and get momentum going right away,” she said. There is talk of a bus that will bring physical exhibits to various sites throughout the GTA, but the lion’s share of the collection will be kept online. It is expected to grow in time as more and more people share their photos, stories, art and music. The Myseum of Toronto will rely on the expertise of former Heritage Toronto executive director Karen Carter, who has taken on a similar role with the new organization.
JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com A new concept is expected to see an official Toronto museum succeed where previous attempts at creating a city-themed museum have fallen short. Dubbed the Myseum of Toronto, the unconventional concept will celebrate the city’s history, diversity, culture, people and places, highlighting stories from the past and visions of the future. Instead of having a bricks-and-mortar location, it will be largely digital, with pop-up events taking place throughout the GTA to bring the Myseum to different communities. The Myseum of Toronto concept was unveiled at a launch ceremony at the St. James Cathedral Centre on Church Street earlier this month.
Staff photo/JUSTIN SKINNER
Myseum of Toronto co-founder Diane Blake makes her address last week at the opening of the museum.
“As an immigrant to Toronto in the 1980s, I’ve been struck by the diversity and wonderful dynamism that is Toronto,” said Diane Blake, founder and chair of the board for the Myseum. “My husband, Stephen, and I wanted to give back to the city that has been so great to us and our family so we decided on bringing the idea of a museum of Toronto to life.” Blake said the idea has been in the works for two years, with a
small but dedicated group of board members providing support during that time. As its name suggests, the Myseum will be a collaborative effort, with Torontonians of all stripes asked to contribute their own stories, artifacts and ideas to help create a mosaic that truly showcases the best the city has to offer. “Toronto is one of the world’s most successful urban environments so my fellow board members
She expressed her excitement at the concept launch. “The idea of a museum of Toronto coming from citizens and the average person in the city who wants to give something back is, I think, what you’re going to see,” she said. “This really is about a love-in for the city. We don’t love this city as Torontonians as much as we should.” Car ter noted the concept could see people brought to various locales to learn more about Toronto’s history and culture. “We’re going to drive you to places across the city that maybe you haven’t been to, and hopefully that will allow you to get to know the city better and learn something about yourself and help you contribute to the experience,” she said. The Myseum of Toronto will start popping up across the city in June with its Myseum on the Move project, asking people to get involved and add their own voices to the city’s story.

The new 11 Division was officially opened on October 28, 2011 on the site of the historic 1914 Carlton Village Public School and has preserved much of the character of the old school. The station is the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver accredited

Costs part of Gardiner debate
UR O Y T E L DON’ T SE A E L E L VEHIC N. W O D U O CHAIN Y
The debate over the future of the Gardiner Expressway could turn out to be a very interesting discussion about the future of Toronto. It is odd that it should be: after all, we’re just talking about 1.7 kilometres or so of concrete, and the bit of roadway that is suffocating underneath. Toronto is so much more than the connection of two highways, and really, whether the city spends $900 million to rebuild the thing on a new configuration or about $400 million to rip it all down doesn’t make for a hill of beans in Scarborough or Etobicoke or North York. It is not a big part of the city. But it has become a big part of the debate about the city, and when Toronto politicians start to talk about it… it gets emotional. Indeed, it got so emotional last week that when Toronto’s public works and infrastructure committee was faced with making a proper recommendation on the matter, it threw up its hands and left it all to council.

david nickle the city Mayor John Tory is going into that council meeting intending to support the ‘hybrid’ option of essentially shifting and rebuilding the ramps between the Don Valley Parkway and the Gardiner Expressway. It is costly, and doesn’t confer as many citybuilding advantages, but it appeals to many voters who might leave their mark next to pro-car Rob Ford’s name next election. But the matter of the cost is the thing, and it might be quite the thing. York Centre Councillor James Pasternak, who sits on the city’s budget committee, is a supporter of the hybrid option, but at Tuesday’s meeting of that committee, he made it clear that he wasn’t about to support it without a way to pay. And the best way to pay? Road tolls, he said, preferably collected in such a way that
it gave Toronto taxpayers a break. If there is any issue more historically emotional than the question of the continued elevation of the Gardiner Expressway, it is the terrifying prospect of Hwy. 407-style road tolls on highways running through the heart of the city. The city considered imposing tolls in 2008, and eventually rejected the idea because a full, regional-tolling system that included the 401, DVP and 427 would have been prohibitively expensive to set up. But Pasternak raises an interesting issue, as council moves to consider yet another billion-dollar-or-so infrastructure project resting on the same old revenue streams as before: namely, money is going to have to come from somewhere beyond simple savings. Toronto Council is going to have to start talking about what that might look like.

launches new trip planner wMetrolinx As the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games approach, a new trip planner from Metrolinx seeks to provide accurate travel data for transit rides taken in Toronto and beyond. Triplinx works similarly to more well-known search resources like Google Maps, although in this case it caters to transit users. You can plot out any trip made by one of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area’s transit agencies, including the TTC. The site also has a searchable stop finder, access to schedules and service updates, and information on the various transit providers’ fare rates. To use a beta version of the site, visit www.triplinx.ca bike only for some bus racks wOne
Those front-facing bike racks found on some TTC buses will be restricted to carrying only one bicycle following concerns raised by the Ontario Ministry of Labour, it was announced last week. The ministry ordered the TTC to suspend and review the use of the racks in the fall after concerns were raised
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT about sightlines for bus drivers when the racks, which carry two bicycles, were full. The restrictions apply to the articulated buses as well as a new fleet of 40-foot buses manufactured by Nova. All other TTC buses can still carry two bicycles. Cyclists can transport their rides onto a bus, but only if there is enough room. Subway busker applications wWanted:
Want to share your musical gifts with hundreds of commuters and make some cash on the side? You’ll first have to impress the TTC. The final auditions for the transit commission’s annual subway busker search don’t take place until August. But to get that far you’ll need to formally apply for a chance at an audition. There’s only room for 175 solo or duo acts and the TTC expects all applications will be in well before the deadline of Friday, June 19. A judging panel will pick
the top 74 acts over a weekend of live auditions at this year’s Canadian National Exhibition. To pick up your application package, head over to Davisville Station during regular business hours or visit www.ttc.ca

zone rankles cyclists wpedestrian
It seems the decision to establish a special area for pedestrians on a stretch of John Street has rankled some cyclists. By all accounts the John Street Pedestrian Zone established between Queen Street West and Adelaide Street has been a hit with those on foot able to enjoy some more sidewalk space. But the move also takes out crucial curb space for cyclists, activists say. Some critical of the move posted pictures and videos last week on social media of a virtually empty pedestrian area while adjacent car and bike traffic shared constrained lane space. The pedestrian zone is in effect until mid-October. Rahul Gupta is The Guardian’s transit reporter. His column runs every Thursday. Reach him on Twitter: @TOinTRANSIT

Important message to members and supporters of the Ontario Liberal Party: Even partial privatization has brought soaring electricity rates in countries around the world. Small business owners, farmers and residents cannot afford to pay more for electricity. Future generations will need the perpetual flow of hundreds of millions of dollars from our public Hydro One — to pay for public services like health care and education. If Bill 91 is passed, Liberal MPPs, the Ontario Liberal Party and Premier Wynne will be held responsible for the consequences.
There are many reasons to keep Hydro One in public hands. Visit www.cupe.on.ca for more information.
