Frontlines is offering a free pre-culinary program for young people aged 18 to 29. T h e 1 6 - we e k Ca t e r i n g Careers program, set to start in late May, is aiming to recruit Weston youth who have barriers to employment and would like to work in the food service industry. The program will include an overview of the food service sector, cooking skills development, menu planning, and resume building. Participants will receive in-kitchen hands-on training, and certificates in Safe Food Handler’s and Smart Serve upon completion. Frontlines is at 1844 Weston Rd.

Recent York resident and cellist Cris Derksen is on the road with fellow aboriginal musicians and

she’s bringing them home to Toronto for a concert. The local concert of the Red Ride Tour, which travels through a number of provinces and even in the U.S., will be at

downtown’s Monarch Tavern, 12 Clinton St., on Thursday, May 28. Derksen is one of four musicians on the bill for the local show. “People should come to the

concert to experience something that is new as well as old,” the Vaughan Road resident said. “It’s new in that there’s aboriginal cellists and violinists, and old as in we’re playing genres

that are really familiar.” While she’s a classically trained musician, she performs music that she calls electro cello, a mixture of genres that >>>CRIS, page 7
