L
ua Shayenne has vague memories of leaving her home in Ivory Coast in the ’90s and heading to Italy to start anew. One minute, the then 12-year-old was enjoying West Africa’s vast open spaces, and the next she, her brother and father were headed to Europe, her mother following several months later. “My parents never spoke to us about what was hap-
pening, we just left,” she recalled. “I have vague memories of just rushing and leaving.” Years later, Shayenne would discover her parents made the decision to leave the country because of civil unrest that was unfolding. “I consider myself one of the lucky ones,” Shayenne said, referring to other youngsters who were made into child soldiers. Angela Carter understands good nutrition is not only important for young people, but people of all ages. With that in mind, the interim executive director of Frontlines believes their two cooking programs not only teach youth how to prepare simple, healthy meals, but arms those youth with skills to pass along at home. “Children are not eating well and at home they go without proper meals,” Carter said. “The program teaches them how to prepare simple meals when they are home so they don’t eat junk food.” Frontlines, a community drop-in centre, offers services and programs to needy youth and other groups in Weston. The non-profit organization offers two cooking programs. Frontlines Cooks is a cooking class building on peer mentorship and healthy living. Young people in grades 8 to 12 learn about menu creation, healthy eating, and how to shop on a budget during >>>cooking, page 5
