Shelves bare at Weston food bank

family literacy

FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com With an increase in need and near-bare shelves, the Weston Area Emergency Support (WAES) food bank is pleading with the community to help keep racks stocked. “We are fortunate because Weston is good to us as a community supporting the food bank,” said Diana Stapleton, chair of WAES. “The summer depleted our resources.” WAES, which has served the area bounded by Hwy. 401, Black Creek Drive, Eglinton Avenue and Royal York Road since 1985, has seen a 25 per cent increase in need this year over last, she said. “Our donations are not keeping up, and we have had to spend double what we spent last year to buy food to fill the gap,” Stapleton said. “We can’t keep this up. We are looking to make the community aware of the problem.” She noted it’s not just new Canadians seeking assistance, but people who might not have relied on the food bank previously. “They can’t afford to pay for their apartment and pay for food,” she said. “Forty per cent of the people we see are children.” >>>need, page 3

Arts groups should be accessible and visible Cultural groups in York seek space

FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com With the lack of space for arts groups to meet, never mind hold perfor-

mances or workshops, many organizations in the Oakwood Avenue and Vaughan Road area have taken to gather in bakeries, restaurants and dining room tables.

With no community centre and under-utilized library space, holding arts-based programming has been a real challenge in the York neighbourhood.
