Future bakers learned how to make bread last Thursday at a special workshop as part of Feed Tomorrow Week, which aims to raise awareness and collect pledges to help feed the city’s hungry students. “There’s a need for food in our schools,” said Shannon Quesnelle, development manager for Toronto Foundation for Student Success (TFSS). “A lot of kids are going hungry every day. It affects their grades and physical health.” TFSS, an independent charity that raises funds and provides programs for children at the >>>beyond, page 14

York Memo students step up for nutrition programs CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com
Y
ork Memorial Collegiate Institute students have taken over the TTC for two days this past week to raise funds and awareness for Feed Tomorrow Week. But while most Toronto high schools send six to 12 volunteers to take part in the annual Toronto Foundation for Student Success event, York Memorial sent out almost 100 students over two days. “We have a really good track record,” said Sabrina Barone, teacher and head of the Student Success department at York Memorial, noting this was the school’s fourth year to take part in TTC Take Over Days. Student volunteers went out to subway stations during evening rush hours to inform commut-
ers about student hunger while collecting donations to help pay for school nutrition programs. Last year, they raised more than $2,600 alone as a school, Barone noted. And two years ago, students raised more than $2,200 in just four hours at Downsview station.
“
I just wanted to help out our community. We learned that there’s people who need help in the community even though it doesn’t look like it. – Enez Ozbek
The executive team of York Memorial’s social justice club hoped for similar success as they led their peers in getting the message out at 13 subway stations this year.
“People actually stopped to talk to us and ask what we’re doing,” said Grade 11 student Monique Samuel, who was stationed at Yonge-Bloor station. Fellow Grade 11 student Raluca Alexandrescu said they were already able to raise $300, mostly in change, at Spadina station this past Tuesday. Other commuters took the time to donate $5 to Toronto’s hungry children by texting “TFSS” to 45678. For Enez Ozbek, it was well worth his time to volunteer after school. “I wanted to help out our community,” he said. “We learned that there’s people who need help in the community even though it doesn’t look like it.” For more information about the Toronto Foundation for Student Success, visit www. tfss.ca

Vision for Kodak site endorsed by Toronto council CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com A community working group’s vision for the former Kodak lands is a step closer to reality for the vacant site to be a mixed-use facility to help revitalize the area. Toronto City Council endorsed a report Oct. 8 that presented several proposed principles reflecting the vision of the working group consisting of three community members each from Ward 11 and Ward 12 as well as York South-Weston councillors
Frances Nunziata and Frank Di Giorgio. City staff and representatives from Metrolinx, the provincial transportation agency that currently owns the former Kodak lands at Black Creek Drive and Eglinton Avenue, are also part of the working group. “That area is a main intersection. There’s a lot of possibility for revitalization,” said Nunziata, adding the community didn’t support the initial plan to make the entire 23-hectare site a maintenance and storage facility
for LRT vehicles servicing the Eglinton Crosstown line. “That area needs to be revitalized, especially on Weston Road.” She noted some of the ideas that came out of the five meetings held since May include providing space for retail stores, an institution like a college campus, additional office space, and residential use. “This continued partnership has the potential to further the local community’s interests in the revitalization of the Black Creek, Eglinton,
Weston area,” Di Giorgio said in a statement. Jamie Robinson, Metrolinx director of community relations and communications, agreed. “We’ve had really positive discussions and agreed on a series of principles,” he said. The list of principles developed in response to the working group discussions is intended to feed into the Request for Proposals (RFP) process that Metrolinx will be issuing later this year for construction of the maintenance

storage facility lands. Some of the outlined principles include prospective proponents to consider a broad range of uses on the lands, propose an approach to minimize the footprint of the maintenance storage facility, and identify areas where potential development could occur especially along the Eglinton Avenue West frontage. would be stored overnight, cleaned and maintained. The site would also include a bus bay for incoming TTC buses connecting with the LRT line. Robinson added the plan is to have further meetings with the working group as the RFP process continues. Metrolinx expects to have a proponent selected by late 2014 or early 2015. Make a difference for the homeless
Write us
W
ith colder weather approaching, the needs of the homeless in our city will come into sharper focus and there’s a new initiative underway that allows local residents, business, religious groups and social service agencies to coordinate the ways they can help. Homeless Connect Toronto is a branch of the North America-wide Project Homeless Connect which aims to improve the access the homeless have to the services and programs they need. The 2013 Street Needs Assessment interim report, which was released by the City of Toronto this summer, estimated the number of homeless at 5,219. While those numbers represent an increase of only about one per cent from the last survey in 2009, all Torontonians should be concerned that so many of our fellow citizens have no place to call home. It’s important to note more than 76.1 per cent of those surveyed by the city on the our view night of April 17 were recorded as taking refuge in city-administered homeless shelters. Approximately Homeless 8.6 per cent were sleeping outConnect has doors, according to the report. Perhaps the bright spot in the great potential report’s numbers is that the large percentage of homeless in shelters are at least within the reach of social service agencies and programs. Which is why an initiative like Homeless Connect Toronto has the potential to do a lot of good. Homeless Connect plans to bring together support services in fields such as housing, employment, health care, and clothing in one place, for those in need to access and learn more about what is available to them. The organization is planning an event at the Harbourfront Community Centre on April 13 of next year, and is now looking for sponsors and service providers to get involved. The local business community can help with sponsorships, covering the costs of getting the word out in the homeless community, and making those in need aware of potential job openings. Homelessness is far from a downtown issue in Toronto. There are shelters in neighbourhoods around the city. Local residents can take advantage of what Homeless Connect is doing by finding out the ways they can help, and by connecting to service agencies and programs in need of volunteers. For more info on Homeless Connect Toronto, visit www.hctoronto.org

Pick-up hockey more like pick-me-up hockey
O
ne by one the lads shuffled into the dressing room at venerable Dave Keon Arena late Thursday night to kick off another season of pickup hockey for The Way And I Mean Waaaaay Over The Hill Gang. There were plenty of high fives, low fives, in between fives and smiles all around. Then it was time to get down to business. We’re talking of the business of sports injury oneupmanship, of course. Romeo led off the festivities by giving a tear-jerking update on his long-time sciatica as he struggled to squeeze into his hockey pants. I won’t bore you with all the details of his lengthy oration, but suffice it to say, with such limited mobility in his lower body, we were advised not to be expecting much in the way of backchecking from him for the next little while. Next up was Scoop. He had his familiar tensor
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY bandages wrapped tightly around both wrists. Still battling carpal tunnel syndrome, alas, he sighed. It was tough to follow with all the fancy terminology he used, but the gist of his tale seemed to be that he couldn’t see the light at the end of that carpal tunnel. In short, given the restriction of movement in his hands, he was letting us know we shouldn’t expect to see any passing from him in the immediate future. Two tear-jerking Kodak moments right after another brought to you by OHIP. But wait, sports fans. There was more, much more. The Hulk informed us his nagging shin splints were acting up again. That meant no back-checking on the horizon for him. Knox reported his bothersome elbow ligaments were
so tender he wasn’t even sure he’d able to get his skate laces tied, let along grip a stick. Ergo, no passing from him anytime soon. Footsteps notified us that his always problematic Achilles tendon felt like it was on fire. Hence, no backchecking for him in the days ahead. Gramps gave us a heads up that his aching rotator cuff was giving him fits. Consequently, we shouldn’t expect much in the way of passing from him down the road. And Frick said he was recovering from a high ankle sprain while his long-time line mate Frack added he was battling a low ankle sprain. The verdict: no backchecking for either of them for the time being. And on and on it went ad nauseam. But it didn’t stop there. It continued well past nauseam, until there was only one player left: Slick. A hush fell over the dressing room.
Slick said he was suffering from the worst groin strain in his career and invited any skeptics to inspect the area personally. All present respectively declined. When it comes to the condition of one’s groin, one’s word is all that is necessary. So, we simply pencilled him in for no back-checking, too. And there you have it. The Way And I Mean Waaaaay Over The Hill Gang is back to kick off yet another season of their unique brand of hockey. Or are they? Hmmm. Now that I think about it, given their frail condition, it’s hard to believe any of them will actually be able to muster up enough strength to drop a puck for the opening faceoff. Classical concert to support 11 Division scholarship program Erin Hatfield ehatfield@insidetoronto.com It can be hard to find like-minded musicians, but when two accomplished local artists started to play together the women said they really clicked. Violinist Susan Spier, from Bloor West, and pianist Catherine Maguire, from the Rockcliffe-Smythe neighbourhood in York, have been playing together for a couple of years and on Sunday, Oct. 20 they will come together to present their first public offering in order to raise funds for a

local police scholarship program. “We have the same objectives of learning chamber works that we really wanted to play,” Spier said. “Our way of working is similar and we enjoy playing together.” Maguire comes from a musical family and has studied music and piano at the University of Toronto and the University of Western Ontario. Spier started playing the violin in public school and went on to study music and musicology extensively at a number of universities before playing with the Montreal Symphony for five years. She now teaches the violin out of a studio in Bloor West. Maguire also teaches piano and also directs a choir in York Region. The women met through a local network of music teachers and after some time decided to play together. “We started for fun simply to play through some sonatas, and this led to our decision to work on repertoire that we both wished to pursue in more depth,” Spier explained. The women have played a few private shows, but the upcoming fundraising concert on Sunday will be their first public offering. The concert is being held in sup-

port of the Toronto Police Service 11 Division Community Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) Community Safety Scholarship, which is awarded through the Scadding Court Community Centre Scholarship Program. The CPLC Community Safety Scholarship awards up to $4,000 to deserving young people who are
making their community a safer place. Spier is on the CPLC and had offered to do the concert as a means of fundraising for the scholarship, which was first handed out last year. The profits from the concert will go toward the 2014 program. The women decided on the theme “music and youth”, which comes
to life through the pieces they have chosen to play. “Each work has a specific connection to youth and I am going to give a commentary that will tie the program together and unify it,” Spier said. The women will perform sonata selections of Vivaldi, Mendelssohn, Franck and Ravel. The concert begins at 2 p.m. at Gate 403 Restaurant located at 403 Roncesvalles Avenue. The women are looking forward to playing at Gate 403, which they said is a somewhat unusual place for them to perform. There are only about 40 tickets available. “We wanted an intimate number, we didn’t want a huge stage,” Spier said. “And we wanted it to be local.” The tickets are $35 and include the concert and light refreshments after the concert. To purchase tickets contact Deb Skinner at 416-808-1119 or the Roncesvalles BIA at info@roncesvallesvillage.ca or 416-537-2701. Spier and Maguire said tickets will not be sold at the door. Transportation Services has once again scheduled mechanical leaf collection service in the areas outlined on the attached map.
Mechanical Leaf Collection will take place from: Monday, October 21st to Friday, November 29th, 2013 A total of 43,300 notices, with the program collection dates, will be delivered to all households in the program area. Only those residents who are scheduled to receive mechanical leaf pick-up will receive notification, two weeks prior to the scheduled pick-up date of collection. (Those that do not receive a notice are not eligible for the program). If you are in the program area: A day or two before the start of your collection week, please rake all leaves to the edge of, but not onto the travelled portion of the roadway. Do not place leaves in ditches or in any way as to obstruct water flow. Once crews have picked up the leaves, they will not return to the area and the residents must bag any remaining leaves. Only the leaves that have been placed by the edge of the roadway by 7:00 a.m. the first day of your scheduled collection will be removed. If the leaf collection program is suspended due to an early snow fall, we will resume leaf collection during the month of April 2014. The City suggests that, whenever possible, composting is still the best solution for managing your leaves. For information on composting, please visit: toronto.ca/ compost If you do not receive mechanical leaf collection, place your yard waste in reusable, rigid, open-top containers or kraft paper bags on your regular yard waste collection day for pick-up. Check your local collection calendar for your yard waste collection schedule and more helpful tips. If you have any questions about the service, call 311 or visit the website at: toronto.ca/transportation/leaf_pickup

Humber Community Senior Services offers programs that encourage independence
SO WHY ISN’T YOUR INTERNET? THE RIGHT CHOICE
Rooted in the Mount Dennis community for 46 years, Humber Community Seniors Services has been a catalyst in helping seniors and adults with cognitive and physical disabilities live independently, safely and with dignity. It helps keep people out of long term care homes and emergency rooms. A nonprofit organization, Humber Seniors helps improve clients’ quality of life with programs like Meals on Wheels. “We deliver 20 thousand hot meals daily,” says Peter Mueller, Humber’s Board Vice Chair. Seniors often need help getting around to do everyday activities. Humber has seven vehicles to drive people to medical appointments, grocery stores and other errands. “We help seniors to function independently,” says Mueller. Humber’s Adult Day Program provides daily care for seniors and adults with physical and cognitive challenges. Meals and transportation are provided. “We keep participants mentally and physically stimulated through therapeutic and recre-

ational activities,” says Mueller. Humber’s Wellness Programs develop creative and learning skills that enhance life and reduce social isolation, such as gardening, arts and crafts, escorted monthly outings, and education on chronic illnesses like diabetes. The Home Help program provides assistance with light house cleaning and grocery shopping. Humber even has a Home & Property Maintenance program - grass cutting, snow removal, window cleaning, handy man and small repair jobs. “We also have a program to call people who don’t have close living family members or friends to check on them,” says Mueller.
“It helps with loneliness and ensures they are safe.” Humber will soon launch a Safe Driving program for young and older drivers. “We all cherish the freedom and independence of driving a vehicle. Whether you have driven for many years or are a young driver, the skills you will learn during this 2 hour classroom course will increase your confidence and reduce your likelihood of being involved in an accident. This course may just save your life.” To volunteer or get more information about Humber’s programs, please call 416-2497946, or visit their web site at Humberseniors.org

Beyond 3:30 initiative offers free programming for TDSB students aged 11 to 14 >>>from page 1 Toronto District School Board, held various events across the city this past week. One of the featured events involved a dozen students from Rockcliffe Middle School and Maple Leaf Public School who visited Ace Bakery’s main facility near Keele Street and Lawrence Avenue where master baker Marcus Mariathas hosted the bread-making workshop for the junior chefs. Each of the students are part of the beyond 3:30 program, an after-school initiative supported by TFSS, which helps to support and keep the program going throughout the school year.

This year it’s great to have the kids here. – Fiona Mitchell
Beyond 3:30 offers free programming for students between the ages of 11 and 14, and provides a safe place for physical fitness, a nutritious meal, and homework support. Ace Baker y has been involved for the past three years holding employee fundraisers to support TFSS. Some of the employees have also visited the schools to see the programs in action, said Fiona Mitchell, vicepresident, human resources at Ace Bakery.
“This year it’s great to have the kids here,” Mitchell added. “And playing with dough is fun.” Maple Leaf students Jerome December, Lucas Le and Catherine Tran said they all had a great time learning how to make bread and getting the tour of the facility. “It was pretty cool,” Lucas said after the tour. “Now my stomach is growling.” Jerome added that he liked being part of beyond 3:30. “It’s fun and it helps you learn so you can get caught up in school,” he said.

What is a preventive mastectomy? People around the world were shocked to learn that actress and activist Angelina Jolie opted to have a double mastectomy in 2013 to reduce her risk of breast cancer. Jolie, who was 37 years old at the time of the procedure, reportedly learned that she carries a mutation of the BRCA1 gene, which sharply increases her risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer. In addition, the actress has a family history of cancer. Her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died of ovarian cancer in 2007 at the age of 56. By having a preventive mastectomy, Jolie reduced her breast cancer risk from 87 percent to 5 percent, according to an op-ed piece she authored in The New York Times. Jolie is not the only well-known actress to opt for a preventive mastecto-
my, as fellow thespian Christina Applegate had a similar procedure in 2008 after learning she had a mutation of the BRCA1 gene. These highly publicized cases have left many women wondering if a preventive mastectomy is something they should consider. BRCA stands for "breast cancer susceptibility genes," a class of genes known as tumor suppressors, says the National Cancer Institute. Mutations in these genes have been linked to hereditary breast and ovarian cancer. A person's risk of developing breast and/or ovarian cancer is greatly increased if he or she inherits a harmful mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2. Mutations in these genes could also put a person at increased risk for other cancers. Genetic tests can check for
mutations in BRCAgenes. During such a test, a blood sample is taken, and if a mutation is found, a person may get genetic counseling and work with a doctor to develop a plan of action. It is important to note that not all people with a genetic mutation will get breast cancer or ovarian cancer. The National Cancer Institute's "SEER Cancer Statistic Review" states a woman who has inherited a harmful mutation in BRCA1 or BRCA2 is about five times more likely to develop breast cancer than a woman who does not have such a mutation. Although there is no surefire way to determine if a person with a mutated gene will develop breast cancer, many women who are considered high risk opt for a preventive mastectomy to reduce their
risk. Women who have a family history of breast cancer, have received positive results from gene testing, have already had cancer in one breast, or have dense breasts that make testing difficult may want to get a preventive mastectomy. The decision to get a preventive mastectomy is not one to take lightly. Many breast centers are staffed with breasthealth specialists, genetic counselors, breast surgeons, and reconstructive surgeons who can help patients make the best decision. Second opinions are strongly recommended for women considering a preventive mastectomy. Women should understand the options available to them if they have an extremely elevated risk of breast cancer or ovarian cancer. – MS

Conducting a breast examination at home In the shower, use the pads of your fingers and move around your entire breast in a circular pattern, moving from the outside to the center, checking the entire breast and armpit area. Check both breasts each month for any lumps, thickening or hardened knots. Conduct an examination in bed.The breast tissue will naturally distribute over your chest wall and ribs when you are lying down. Place a pillow under your right shoulder and your right arm behind your head.
VOLUNTEER WITH GIRL GUIDES
Using your left hand, move the pads of your fingers around your right breast gently in small circular motions covering the entire breast area and armpit. Squeeze the nipple and check for discharge or lumps. Repeat on left breast. Conduct a visual examination. Standing in front of the mirror, look at your breasts with your hands at your side and over your head. Look for differences between breasts. Unusual dimpling or taut or thick skin may be indicative of a problem.

Ford-Ainslie an ugly break-up It surely was an aggressive move by Mayor Rob Ford to send robocalls to the constituents of Ward 43 Scarborough East Councillor Paul Ainslie Friday evening. One might even say it went over the top in its aggression, straight on to intimidation and bullying, or to use Councillor Ainslie’s words, “thuggery.” But it’s not surprising. Never mind Ford’s generally pugilistic modus operandi when it comes to local, retail politics. Never mind that Ainslie had broken with the mayor on his vision for a subway-at-all-costs for Scarborough residents. The two hadn’t seen eye to eye really since the beginning of the term. Ainslie started out, installed as the chair of the Toronto Public Library Board, where he did his best to implement the mayor’s early-term cost-cutting agenda – ultimately getting caught up with the mayor’s office in the stumble over branch cuts that emerged in the 2011 budget process. And when it came time to replace the budget chief,
david nickle the city Ainslie – an experienced committee member more than willing to do the job – was passed over. On the other side of the equation, Ainslie wasn’t afraid to go on the record to the Toronto Star when they were investigating allegations that the mayor had shown up appearing to be intoxicated for the annual Garrison Ball. Ainslie said those allegations were true. So Mayor Ford took to the telephone lines, on his own dime, to tell Ainslie’s constituents that it was “extremely, extremely unfortunate” that Ainslie “did not listen to his constituents,” and “led the charge” against the subway in Scarborough. The implication is clear: that good-hearted Scarborough folk should cast their votes elsewhere. Ainslie came back swinging Tuesday. He’s taking the matter to the city’s integrity commissioner. He called the whole
robocall adventure “a blatant act of political thuggery.” It’s a shame that he couldn’t have found those words sooner. Ainslie was absolutely right to raise questions about the financial realities of the subway plan. Yet as recently as July, Ainslie supported moving along with that plan – even though many of the same funding problems existed then as now. In an interview, he explained that he’d hoped the city could negotiate those away by the Sept. 30 deadline council set. But really – hope for such a resolution was as faint then as it is now. Now it’s off to the integrity commissioner, who’ll be asked to rule on whether Toronto Council’s code of conduct is copacetic with aggressive robocalling in the wards of one’s political enemies. While that sorts itself out, we might show a little understanding about the vehemence with which Ainslie directs his rhetoric toward Ford. As breakups go, this is an ugly one.

In an open letter to Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) elected officials, Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance chair John Tory called for a “laser focus” to transit planning. Tory, who is also a popular radio host, released the letter as city council debated whether to jettison a fullyfunded LRT plan and raise property taxes to fund a three-stop Scarborough subway extension instead. Transit planning is in jeopardy due to “short-term decision-making and politicking”, writes Tory. “The result has been decades of cancelled projects, incomplete facts and failed accountability.” work impacts streetcar service wTrack

A west-end neighbourhood group has organized a phone-in campaign targeted at the Ontario Minister of Transportation to stop construction of 16-foot tall noise barrier walls along the GO Georgetown South rail corridor. The Junction Triangle Rail Committee is asking residents to call Glen Murray’s office daily at 416-327-9200 and request he arrange to meet with members of the group and a commissioned architectural firm to discuss an alternative design for the walls. Metrolinx intends to construct the noise walls, to mitigate the effect of increased diesel train traffic, before the Union-Pearson Express air rail link opens in 2015.

EGLINTON CROSSTOWN LIGHT RAIL TRANSIT
Rapid and reliable transit is coming to the centre of Toronto. The Crosstown will move Torontonians to work, school and play faster than ever before – reducing travel times and enhancing our economy and our environment. The Crosstown will run along Eglinton, with more than 10 kilometres underground, making transit travel up to 60 per cent faster than today. In accordance with Ontario Regulation 231/08, the TTC and City of Toronto conducted an environmental impact assessment of the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project; a 33-kilometre electricallypowered LRT line extending from the Lester B. Pearson International Airport in the City of Mississauga to Kennedy Station in the City of Toronto. An Environmental Project Report (EPR) for this transit project was completed March 12, 2010 and a Statement of Completion was submitted to the Ministry of the Environment in May 2010. Subsequently, in 2012, Metrolinx assumed management responsibility for the project and has become the sole proponent. Metrolinx has identified the need to revise the project between Jane Street and Keelesdale Park to: • Divide the implementation of the project into two phases at Weston Road (the site of the Mount Dennis Station) and proceed with the phase from Mount Dennis Station to Kennedy Station and defer the section from Weston Road to Pearson International Airport due to funding limitations; • Include at the western terminus of the first phase (at Mount Dennis Station) a 15-bay bus terminal (not previously assessed in the original EPR); • Re-configure the LRT between Jane Street and Keelesdale Park from a surface LRT line in the centre of Eglinton Avenue West to a grade-separated LRT line to improve operations; and • Assess the environmental impacts of a Maintenance and Storage Facility (MSF), where light rail vehicles would be maintained and stored (the effects of which were not previously assessed in the original EPR). An Addendum to the Environmental Project Report for the Eglinton Crosstown LRT has been prepared and is now available for a 30-day review period starting October 18, 2013 at the following locations: Ministry of the Environment Environmental Approvals Branch 2 St. Clair Avenue West, Floor 12A Toronto, ON M4V 1L5 tel: 416-314-8001 or 1-800-461-6290 Monday to Friday: 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Please also visit us online at: www.thecrosstown.ca There are circumstances where the Minister of the Environment has the authority to require further consideration of the change to the transit project or impose conditions on it. These include if the Minister is of the opinion that: • The change to the transit project may have a negative impact on a matter of provincial importance that relates to the natural environment or has cultural heritage value or interest; or • The change to the transit project may have a negative impact on a constitutionally protected Aboriginal or treaty right. Before exercising the authority referred to above, the Minister is required to consider any written objections to the change to the transit project that he or she may receive within 30 days after the Notice of Environmental Project Report Addendum is first published. Interested persons are encouraged to review this document and provide comments by November 18, 2013. Comments and concerns may be directed to the project contacts listed below. You have the right to submit an objection to the identified change to the transit project to the Minister of the Environment no later than November 18, 2013 (Minister of the Environment, 77 Wellesley Street West, 11th Floor, Ferguson Block, Toronto, ON M7A 2T5, fax: 416-314-6748, e-mail: minister.moe@ontario.ca, Attn: Minister of the Environment).
