York dancer stars in duet on stage at Harbourfront Oct. 18 to 20 FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Linnea Swan and Susie Burpee have danced together in other people’s productions many times, but the long-time colleagues had never collaborated on a piece together. “A few different choreographers have made duets for us,” said Swan, who resides in York. Now, the twosome have cocreated Road Trip, which will have its world premier at Harbourfront Centre’s Enwave Theatre today through Saturday.
“We crafted a mystery,” Swan said. “It starts off with a bang and it unfolds into a little mystery. It’s like putting pieces of a puzzle together. It’s more of watching us try to figure out what happened. It’s never really answered. It’s a very collaborative piece.” After starting work on Road Trip in 2009, the first half was completed a year later, Swan said, adding it was then the duo decided to extend the piece to make it a full evening. “We just really trust each other’s instincts,” Swan said of >>>’road’, page 3
New Silverthorn Cenotaph to be unveiled Sunday in York Those who made the ultimate sacrifice serving Canada will be honoured on Sunday at an unveiling ceremony for a new cenotaph in York. Supporters will march from the Toronto Parking Authority lot on Rogers Road between Rosethorn and Blackthorn avenues and proceed north on Silverthorn Avenue to Kenora Crescent, where the cenotaph will be officially presented to the community. The new cenotaph replaces one built in 1923 in front of the Silverthorn War Veterans Hall at 351 Silverthorn Ave. to honour York Keelesdale soldiers who fought in the First World War. The community sent more soldiers per capita to fight in the First
World War than any jurisdiction in the British Empire, according to the Silverthorn branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. Unfortunately, membership in the legion branch has declined over the years and members were no longer able to maintain the building. They decided in 2008 to close the legion and relocate the cenotaph. However, a feasibility study determined the 86-year-old cenotaph would not survive the move. Instead, legion members voted to decommission the old cenotaph and build a new one at Silverthorn and Kenora. The march will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday with the unveiling ceremony taking place at 2 p.m.
