As their candidate fell further and further behind on election might, some Conservative organizers assembled at Joe Oliver’s campaign party at the Toronto Cricket Club were able to take solace the other team in blue – the Toronto Blue Jays – was well on its way to victory. The former prosecutor also took nearly 50 per cent of the riding’s vote share. The NDP’s Andrew Thomson finished a distant third, 350 votes ahead of fourth-place Matthew Chisholm for the Green Party. Mendicino’s victory was one of many local delights for the Liberals who swept all of Toronto, pushing several prominent Tories and NDP incumbents out of the House of Commons in the process. Dzerowicz reclaims Liberal stronghold LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Newly minted Liberal MP for Davenport Julie Dzerowicz vows she’ll work really hard on her constituents’ behalf. Hesitant to make promises while on the hustings, Dzerowicz said she made only two to residents as she campaigned: one, that she’ll fight as hard as she can for the Davenport community; and two, that she will take a different approach than that of her predecessors. “I want to think differently. I think that we live in a world that has such complicated solutions and I really don’t care whether they’re left ideas or right ideas, blue ideas or purple ideas,” Dzerowicz told The Villager after her victory speech at the Casa Das Beiras Cultural Community Centre of Toronto Monday, Oct. 19, night. “I want the very best ideas. I want to work with everybody’s best ideas because that’s what it’s going to take for us to be able to create the kind of Canada that we want to live in moving forward.” The Liberal party’s platform resonated with Davenport voters, the MP-elect said when asked what her priorities are moving forward. “The Liberal party has made a number of promises and I actually think we’re bang-on in terms of the needs of this community. People are really struggling here. The middle class is struggling,” Dzerowicz said. “They are going to get an income tax cut, they’re going to get additional dollars through the Canada Child Benefit. We’re finally doubling infrastructure investment.” The rookie politician said she is looking forward to seeing that infrastructure money translate into funds for Toronto in order to address the city’s gridlock problem “and finally come up with a plan that gets Toronto moving and our citizens moving in an affordable and accessible way.” “All of those things are real – they resonated with people,” she said. “That’s the reason (the Liberals) were elected with such a majority.”

Winning Davenport Liberal candidate Julie Dzerowicz, left, cheers at her Casa Das Beiras election night headquarters, with some support from Ward 17 Toronto Councillor Cesar Palacio, after defeating NDP incumbent Andrew Cash on Monday.

For almost five decades, the Davenport riding remained Liberal, until NDP Andrew Cash’s election in 2011. Lula Lounge, his election night headquarters, was awash in orange Monday night. He watched the polling results roll in with his family before arriving at the Dundas West and Dufferin streets-area dinner and music establishment. Cash declined The Villager’s request for comment on his loss. Dzerowicz acknowledged the hard work of her main opponent. “Andrew ran a great campaign, but you know what? We did better. We had a better team,” she said. “People forget Davenport was Liberal for 49 years. We brought it back again. The heart and soul of this community is Liberal. We have a lot of hard work to do – together, with wonderful leaders, like (Davenport Councillor) Cesar Palacio and (Davenport MPP) Cristina Martins.” Palacio and Martins as well as Davenport Councillor Ana Bailao were on hand to offer their well wishes.

davenport n Liberal: 21,947 n NDP: 20,512 n Conservative: 5,233 n Green: 261 “I’m looking forward to working with our MP on improving the lives of Davenport residents,” Bailão told The Villager. Upon Dzerowicz’s arrival at Casa Das Beiras just after 11:30 p.m., the throng of supporters began to clap, cheer and chant her name. People stood on chairs to catch a glimpse of her as she made her way to the podium. “We did it,” she exclaimed in a voice full of emotion. “Back in August, it seemed like it was going to be a miracle, but you know what? It was more than that. Canadians didn’t believe in the type of Canada that Harper believes in. We believe

in one that represents the values of freedom, of opportunity, of progress, of hope, of compassion. We believe that there can always be a better Canada and so that’s what this majority election is all about.” Prime Minister-elect, Justin Trudeau, is a “great leader” she added. “I always say that the world is changing faster than ever before, but I don’t mind because the opportunity before us is that we get to shape our future,” Dzerowicz said. “I think we’ve got a great Prime Minister, we’ve got a great team. And, working with Canadians, we’re going to build a new vision and a new economic plan for Canada moving forward.” Dzerowicz was elected with 21,947 votes, Cash received 20,512 votes, followed by Conservative Carlos Oliveira with 5,233 and Green Dan Stein with 261 votes.

TORONTO-ST. PAUL’S

Another victory for Grit Carolyn Bennett On election night there were many surprises in local ridings. Toronto-St. Paul’s was not one of them. Carolyn Bennett won easy reelection, keeping the seat she has held since 1997 and adding to the sweep of Liberal victories across the city. Carolyn Bennett Bennett ended up w i n s a g a i n n with 31,482 Toronto-St. Paul’s votes and her highest vote share since 2004. Runner-up Marnie MacDougall of the Conservatives, who campaigned heavily on the party’s strong support for Israel in the heavily Jewish riding, received 15,375 votes. The NDP’s Noah Richler, son of the famed author Mordecai Richler, took third with 8,386 votes with all 207 polls reporting. The Green Party’s Kevin Farmer finished fourth with 1,829 votes. While in opposition with the Liberals over the last four years, Bennett has chaired the party’s Women’s Caucus and acted as critic for Aboriginal Affairs. She also served as Public Health minister for the Paul Martin government and is widely expected to have an important role in Prime Minister-elect Justin Trudeau’s first cabinet.

t appears voters believe Justin Trudeau is, in fact, ready to become the Prime Minister of Canada as the red tide of Liberal support swept the country and all of Toronto Monday night. With a majority government, the federal Liberals now have a strong mandate to implement their policies and the priorities they outlined during the 78-day national election campaign. It’s time now for Toronto residents, who voted in the Liberals in all 25 local ridings, to make sure the election promises and commitments to invest in our city are kept by the Prime Minister Designate and the newly elected MPs. Start by getting to know your local Liberal MP, many of whom are first-time poliour view ticians. As it is a majority government, they will be your voice in for the next four years. City’s priority Ottawa And while majority governissues must ments are more stable, it becomes even more important to hold the be addressed party in power accountable to run an agenda that is in the best interest of those who elected them into power. The next four years with a co-operative federal government that is friendly to major cities can go a long way in building community at a very local level. Just as Mayor John Tory outlined in his congratulatory speech, Trudeau’s commitment to cities includes investments in building transit, affordable housing, repairing social housing and other major infrastructure needs. These are all top priority issues for Toronto, which can’t be addressed by just one level of government. In a city as large and complex as ours, the federal government must be a major player in helping provide a solution to these ongoing issues. Since we also have a majority Liberal government in Ontario, we are hoping they can work very well together to the benefit of Toronto and other big cities in the province. Even if you didn’t cast a ballot for the Liberals, the incoming MPs are elected to represent all constituents in their riding. Keep them accountable to the “positive politics” that Trudeau seemed to champion throughout the campaign. Tory said he is looking forward to working with Trudeau on Toronto’s issues. So should we.

Cold fall weather passing with flying colours It was chillier than usual for mid-October last weekend. Not surprisingly the unseasonable weather kept a lot of the locals inside. Too bad. They missed a golden opportunity to check out some great fall scenery. Take my favourite nature trail, Cedarvale Ravine. The dip in temperature provided a multitude of stunning sights that one normally doesn’t experience this time of year. I didn’t have to go far for my first breathtaking view either. After just one step on the venerable path, I immediately came across a majestic yellow-bellied turtleneck. I couldn’t believe my good fortune. It was on a park bench behind the Heath Street entrance of St. Clair West station. I didn’t want to scare it away, so I tip-toed over in hopes of getting a closer shot with my camera. It appeared to be whistling what sounded like the OK, Blue Jays theme song. I listened for a few verses,

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY but then was distracted by a an eye-catching dark black double-breasted trench coat. And get this: it was standing upright against a tree warbling with a peach pullover. I kid you not. Wow. I’d been out for all of a minute-and-a-half and I’d seen all this already? I felt like I was in selfie heaven. As much as I enjoyed the show, I was eager to see what else was out there, so I headed down the hill. Within seconds, a flurry of baby blue toques went whizzing by. On their heels was a flock of white longsleeve shirts. Both groups came and went in the blink of an eye. I made a mental note not to blink anymore. I wanted to make absolutely sure I didn’t miss a thing. I moseyed along and as I looked at the steps leading to a bridge high above, I

caught a glimpse of four sets of maroon mountain boots scurrying up in perfect sync. There was a quartet of matching red and white scarves around their necks flapping away in the breeze. I rounded the bend and staring at me was a pair of deep brown wooly socks. They were peeking out from beneath some pale gray sweatpants. I was snapping away furiously. I knew I would need to have proof. No way anybody would believe me if I said I had seen all this stuff in one morning. As I headed past the fenced off area for dogs, the pooches were barking away at each other and at the pink mittens and gold gloves watching them. Over the hill next to the tennis court I saw a beige cardigan perched next to a lavender hoodie. On the soccer field across from them a green vest was enjoying the company of an orange balaclava. As I continued on I came

across a cornucopia of turquoise trousers, lavender sweaters and purple parkas. It was surreal I tell you. I was there until early afternoon and then headed home. On the TV weather report the meteorologist said temperatures would be back to normal for the weeks ahead. So I raced back to the ravine. As fate would have it, that yellow-bellied turtleneck was still at the same park bench. I joined him for a more few choruses of OK, Blue Jays and then called it a day. And what a day it turned out to be. No question the season always gets good marks, come rain or come shine. But last weekend clearly proved fall will pass with flying colours when you add a little cold into the mix, too. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Get in the Halloween spirit with your family at spooky Wychwood Barns DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com There may be a ghost or two at the century-old Artscape Wychwood Barns and operators are inviting residents to come over for some oldfashioned spooky fun. The Halloween-themed Boo! at the Barns happens Saturday, Oct. 24 from 5 to 9 p.m. There will be dancing with a DJ, a haunted house, face painting, crafts, a candy shop, spooky storytelling and more. There’s a bar for the adults as well. Just wear your costume and be ready to have some fun, organizers said. The event is catered to all ages and some families even bring infants along. “What makes it so unusual and so popular is that it has a kind of old-fashioned feeling to it,” said Margo Welch, interim managing director at Artscape Wychwood Barns.

What makes it so unusual and so popular is that it has a kind of old-fashioned feeling to it. It’s more like an old-fashioned party. – Margo Welch, Artscape Wychwood Barns

“It’s much more like an old-fashioned party. There’s a DJ, families are out dancing. It’s very fun and accessible and very popular.” Approximately 1,000 people are expected to turn up for the event, she said. Welch said there are rumours of ghosts at Wychwood Barns, built in 1913. Those looking to hear ghost stories will be able to with Storytelling Toronto, who will be sharing tales during the event. “They’re really terrific,” Welch said of Storytelling

Toronto. “It’s storytelling, it’s not books. Part of their mandate is you cannot read. You have to tell a story.” She said the organization does storytelling for various age groups, and the older the children get, the scarier the stories will get. Welch said the event is not intended to terrify children. “I think there’s an innocence to it that is really fun and suggests what everyone thinks about Halloween, that it’s not dangerous, it’s not really about terrifying people,” she said. “This is an opportunity to meet people who live in the community.” Boo! at the Barns will be held at Barn 2. Wychwood Barns is at 601 Christie St., just south of St. Clair Avenue West, near Bathurst Street. Admission is free, but some activities have a cost.

Donate a coat to a kid this winter Sullivan loses riding after DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com This winter, there will be children who head to school and adults who travel to work without a proper coat.

French as a Second Language French Programs at the TDSB Applications for Early French Immersion are open from November 2 to December 3, 2015. Information evenings run throughout November.

But, it doesn’t have to be this way. A number of York-based organizations are coming together for the third Weston Mount Dennis Community Coat Drive to help ensure no one has to go cold this winter because they can’t afford the proper clothing. The group is working with schools and agencies in the Weston and Mount Dennis communities to distribute coats, hats, scarves and mitts to those without. The coat collection runs from Monday, Oct. 19 to Sunday, Nov. 15. The organization said it can use as many coats as it can get. “There is a need. There’s an outcry for winter gear right here in our area, needed by some of the families in our area and the kids going to school,” said Maria Meyers, president with partner agency Spice Isle Association, and an organizer of the coat drive. Last year, the coat drive benefited more than 500 people, most of whom were children. “The principals know about this. They know of children coming to school who need coats and scarves,” she said.

Meyers said there are various reasons why a person may not have a coat, beyond simply not being able to afford it. Children quickly outgrow their clothing. Or, their coats may rip or tear while they play and they’ll be embarrassed to wear it to school, and can’t replace it. “You actually see them with their thin gear. There’s kids going to school and principals asking: why don’t you have coats?” Meyers said. The group is accepting new and gently used winter coats, hats, scarves, mitts and more. They ask that the donated items be clean, and delivered in clear, sealed plastic bags. Drop off locations include the Weston King Neighbourhood Centre, 2017 Weston Rd., the Learning Enrichment Foundation, 116 Industry Rd., and the Weston Mount Dennis Hub, 1765 Weston Rd. Donations can be made Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Donations can also be made at any time at Toronto police 12 Division, 200 Trethewey Dr. near Black Creek Drive. For more information, call Meyers at 647-706-7254.
