A ‘place of play and freedom’ The newly renovated playground in Arlington Parkette has been named after a Portuguese Consul General responsible for saving 30,000 Jews and other refugees from the Nazis. Local dignitaries unveiled a plaque Sunday afternoon at the parkette situated across from the new Leo Baeck Day School South Campus on Arlington Avenue to honour Second World War diplomat and humanitarian Aristides de Sousa Mendes. “Having this playground, a place of play and freedom, is a fitting tribute to a man who enabled so many to escape the Nazi war machine,” said St. Paul’s Councillor Joe Mihevc, who facilitated the naming ceremony in partnership with the city’s parks department and The Leo Baeck Day School. >>>sousa, page 16

Hemochromatosis: the battle against iron overload FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Looking back, Kelly Walters suspected something wasn’t quite right in her late teenage years. At 18, her weight skyrocketed and she suffered from depression. She hadn’t had a regu-

lar menstrual cycle in a year. Several years later, at 23, the York resident gave birth to her daughter. A postpartum blood test check-up five weeks later revealed something puzzling; her iron numbers were high, something uncommon for a woman who had just given

birth. “The blood test showed I never had a baby,” Walters said, adding she chalked up the results to being young and resilient and she never took the issue further. But as she entered her 30s, her concerns became greater. A

clean eater with a super-active lifestyle, Walters was unable to lose weight, no matter what she did. Joint pain became more intense, her hair was thinning, and eczema covered her skin. “I tried eating really clean, and when I was not able to lose the weight, I felt it wasn’t worth

the effort, so I gave up,” she said, adding another bout of depression followed. After enrolling in fitness programs, and watching what she ate, Walters was able to lose weight – a frustrating 12 pounds in a year and a half. >>>event, page 19

to the rest of the city via the LRT, said Mattos. “People will say, ‘I like it here because of the parks, the access to transportation and it would be a good place to live’, and that will drive benefits for everybody,” said Mattos, a Mount Dennis resident since the 1970s. “Right now people come here but they move away.” Despite the potential, Futhey said many residents are skeptical the Crosstown’s promised benefits will ever be realized, remembering past disappointments such as the Eglinton subway plan cancelled nearly 20 years ago. Local businesses are also

concerned how they will be affected by nearly a decade of construction required to complete the light rail line, which has already resulted in lane closures and upheaval to shops along Eglinton West where the western portion of a nine-kilometre tunnel is already being excavated. But with St. Clair Avenue West, where after a painful construction period the completion of a dedicated streetcar lane resulted in more development interest, Futhey was optimistic new business opportunities will come once the Crosstown begins running in 2020. “The point is, the community is changing overall

and there will be an evolution from the current to the future,” he said. “Certainly on St. Clair, you can see intensification is now taking place, now that the dust has cleared, on a rather shockingly fast scale with the number of new businesses, restaurants and bars opening.” The meeting was the last of three taking place along the Eglinton corridor throughout the month. Earlier meetings were held at the Kennedy/Eglinton Library in Scarborough and the Northern Library in midtown. Local resident Patrick Saavedra shared the panel’s optimism for the Crosstown’s

potential. “It will connect the community to the rest of the city,” said Saavedra after the meeting. “There’s a lot of charm in this area that needs to be heightened, and better transit will directly affect that.” Haggert said the feedback from meetings would inspire future coverage by The York Guardian of the Crosstown project. “It will be our jobs to be catalysts for continuing the discussion,” he said.

eadership is an important skill to acquire in life. However, many people, in particular youngsters in at-risk neighbourhoods do not have as many opportunities to gain those important skills. Thankfully the charitable organization Kids Now has taken up the challenge, offering an afterschool program where youth in grades 7 and 8 can empower themselves and gain confidence. Youth volunteer for the 12-week program and are paired with mentors who help drive home the importance of self-esteem, setting goals, communication, conflict resolution, and stress management. All skills are rooted in making the right choices in our view life, staying in school, and taking part in extra-curricuAfter-school lar activities and volunteerin the community. initiative benefits ingThe last point, though no entire community more special than the others, is one that speaks to how a strong community is created – by everyone being an active part of that community, which helps make that community a better place to live, work, and enjoy life. Kids Now mentors come from all walks of life including corporate employees, university students, and even former Kids Now participants. Kids Now is a chance for corporations, companies, Torontonians and even politicians to become mentors to youth. This is something that would not only help the lives of youth, but create a community, a city where people believe in themselves, which leads to believing in their city and the neighbourhoods they call home. The Kids Now program flourished in several schools in Toronto, in particular St. Luigi Catholic School where students raised funds for Meagan’s Walk, as well as supported a village in Kenya and ran a food and clothing drive to help the less fortunate. It is obvious that giving youth the right skills – leadership being just one – they will take up a challenge and become better citizens. It is now time for mentors of various stripes to help mould even more youth to become all they can be.

This weekend’s road closure update

I

s it just my imagination or is there more work going on during the weekends on Toronto roads than ever before? Construction, resurfacing, maintenance, paving, grinding (whatever that is), concrete de-scaling (whatever THAT is), watermain replacement, railing replacement, bridge repairs, building new TTC tracks, repairing old TTC tracks. The list of stuff may not be endless, but it’s darn close. navigation challenge Throw in marathons, walkathons, assorted otherathons, festivals and events and it can be quite challenging to navigate your way around with all the road closures these days. So what’s a Torontonian to do? The only thing one can do under these trying circumstances: grin and

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY bear it. And to help alleviate the frustration of the inevitable detours awaiting you, I suggest you make a travel plan well in advance so there will be no surprises. The best way find to out what thoroughfares are out of service is online. For those without Internet? Not to worry. Here are this weekend’s key road closures in and around town. 1. That northbound highway entrance ramp you’re expecting to take to get out of the city and away from all the aggravating congestion. 2. The southbound highway exit ramp you’re planning on using to get to your favourite mall. 3. The eastbound lanes on the expressway. That’s if you’re heading east, of

course. 4. If you’re heading west, it’s the westbound lanes on the expressway that are closed, needless to say. construction delays 5. From the intersection of Hey, I Thought That Was Supposed To Be Finished In April and Hey, I That Thought Was Supposed To Be Finished In May to the intersection of Hey, I Thought That Was Supposed To Be Finished In June and Hey, I Thought That Was Supposed To Be Finished In July. 6. That back road you were counting on to get to your job interview on time. 7. That one-way street you were counting on to get to your doctor’s appointment on time. 8. That short cut you were counting on to get to the time-management

seminar on time. 9. That bridge you’ve been taking every weekend for as long as you can remember. 10. That overpass. 11. That underpass. 12. That in-between pass. 13. That street you need to take so you can get grandpa to his local pub where he can watch his beloved Arsenal on the tube. 14. The street you need to take to get your niece to her hockey game. 15. That street, too. 16. That one, too. 17. Definitely, THAT one. 18. Etc. And so on. Alas, also both closed for the next little while, I’m afraid. As if you hadn’t guessed. Minister to hear noise wall concerns A campaign organized by the Junction Triangle Rail Committee has paid off after Transportation Minister Glen Murray reportedly agreed to hear the group’s concerns over a planned series of noise wall barriers. As reported last week by The York Guardian, the group called on its supporters to continuously phone Murray’s office demanding a face-toface meeting to discuss an alternative to the noise wall designs proposed by Metrolinx for the GO Georgetown rail

A public education campaign will launch across the TTC next year to encourage riders to offer up their seats to expectant mothers. The TTC will place advisory decals aboard all vehicles in support of the measure, which Ross said comes as a result of provincial accessibility requirements and not – as has been reported by some media outlets – a strategy to improve rider etiquette. Also planned is the future installation of blue seat inserts on all TTC vehicles designating priority seating. Rahul Gupta is The Guardian’s transit reporter. His column appears every Thursday. Colour-coded bus stop markings and a streamlined network map introduced in the last year could be removed in as little as two months. TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said no decision has been made whether to preserve the designs currently seen along the 94 Wellesley bus route since being placed there on a pilot basis in February. Ross suggested some elements of the designs could be incorporated into a proposed system-wide wayfinding strategy, which was to be unveiled to the public at the TTC’s monthly board meeting on Wednesday.

Could bike lanes be election fodder? Just in time for the 2014 municipal election, it looks like Toronto Council is going to be talking big bike lanes again. This week, Toronto’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee voted to re-start the environmental assessment of bike lanes along Bloor Street. It should also send a shiver up the spine of any regular downtown bicycle commuter. Just about four years ago, cycling advocates convinced the council at the time to put bike lanes on Jarvis Street, and nearly got a separated bike lane pilot project on University Avenue, too. The Jarvis bike lane was good for cyclists, but better for politicians willing to stir up anger over what they characterized as those cyclists’ sinister and overweening ambitions. There wasn’t much consensus in the 2010 mayoralty race, but nearly everyone agreed there was a war on, that war was against “the car,” and Jarvis Street was its battleground. And so it was that the new

david nickle the city council voted to pull the lanes out and widen the road again, against the wishes of the local councillor and community. As an afterthought a year later, council ordered the city to stop studying that other big bike lane project along Bloor. Now, it is about to start up again, and from a transportation planning point of view, it makes a great deal of sense. The city is studying a bikeway along Dupont just to the north of Bloor. What happens there affects what happens on Bloor and vice versa. And it’s not for nothing that Bloor is such a grail for bike nuts. All the public transit along Bloor is below ground, which means cyclists need contend neither with buses nor streetcar tracks, and it crosses many pedestrian- and bike-friendly communities already. It sounds perfect. But going into an election next year, it’s

just as perfect an example for nay-saying politicians to hold up as the latest example of a permanent war against automobiles and their drivers. It’s hard to see how pushing along with even an environmental assessment now will result in anything but a push-back from what has previously shown itself to be a powerful anti-bike sentiment in a large part of the electorate. This is not to say that bike commuters should despair and the city should shelve what is a good plan. A Bloor Street bike lane’s a good idea — just as it would be to extend the bike lanes back east along the Danforth. It would make the city safer, greener, and maybe even a bit more physically fit on average as commuters from all over the city saw a better option in biking. But wouldn’t it be nice if it didn’t also fuel the kind of divisive and disingenuous politicking that burned so bright in 2010?

Humber Community Seniors Services offers programs that encourage independence Rooted in Weston for nearly 50 years, Humber Community Seniors Services helps seniors, as well as adults with cognitive and physical disabilities live independently, safely and with dignity. And that helps keep people out of long term care homes and Emergency Rooms. A nonprofit organization, Humber Seniors helps improve people’s quality of life with programs like Meals on Wheels. “We deliver over 20 thousand hot meals annually,” says Peter Mueller, Humber’s Board Vice Chair. Seniors often need help getting around to do everyday activities. Humber has seven vehicles to drive people to medical appointments, grocery stores and other errands. “We help seniors to function independently with the highest quality of life possible,” says Mueller. Humber’s Adult Day Program provides daily care for seniors and adults with physical and cognitive challenges. Sousa Mendes credited with saving tens of thousands of lives >>>from page 1 Eric Petersiel, head of school at The Leo Baeck Day School, noted while Mendes saved more lives than Oskar Schindler, he isn’t yet a household name. “We hope that this honour will raise the profile of one who saved over 12,000 Jews and almost 30,000 people in total from oppression and certain death, despite direct

orders not to do so,” Petersiel said in a statement. “It is an incredible story with which every Canadian, of Jewish, Portuguese or any descent, must be familiar.” Sousa Mendes had defied a Portuguese order and issued visas allowing thousands to escape the Nazi invasion in France in June 1940. The Sousa Mendes Playground includes junior

and senior play structures, an Apollo net climber, a sandbox, and a wood chip safety surface. The plaque was donated by the Labourers’ International Union of North America Local 183.

Event aiming to raise awareness of little-known disorder >>>from page 1 “Doctors told me if I lose weight I’ll feel better,” she said. “I was tired all the time. I thought, is it because I have a kid? Or is something going on with me?” After finding a doctor who delved deeper into Walters’ symptoms, she was diagnosed in February 2011 with hereditary hemochromatosis. “I never heard about it in my family before,” she said, adding later testing showed both her sisters to be carriers, but not affected by the inherited disorder. According to the Canadian Hemochromatosis Society, hereditary hemochromatosis is the most common genetic disorder affecting Canadians, with one in nine people of mostly Northern European descent being carriers and 1 in 300 are estimated to have two copies of the gene that puts them at risk for iron overload. It is a crippling, potentially fatal condition caused by a defect of iron metabolism that

leads to iron overload in vital organs, joints and tissues. The complications caused by the disorder are preventable if a diagnosis is made before the excess iron causes irreversible damage, and effective treatment exists. Hereditary hemochromatosis, or iron overload, is an inherited disorder that causes the body to absorb two to three times the normal amount of iron. Over the years, the excess iron builds up in the vital organs, joints and tissues where it can cause a number of debilitating and potentially fatal conditions such as liver and heart disease, diabetes, impotence and arthritis. Because early symptoms can be non-specific and attributed to many other causes, hemochromatosis can be difficult to diagnose until more extensive damage has occurred. Even then, hemochromatosis is often overlooked as the causative factor in an observable disease. Early symptoms include chronic fatigue, depression,

abdominal pain, aching joints, loss of sex drive, discolouration or bronzing of skin, with later symptoms including Type II diabetes, hypothyroidism, arrhythmia, and liver disorders, including cirrhosis and liver cancer. Men are typically diagnosed between ages 40 and 60, while women are usually

diagnosed after menopause due to menstrual cycles flushing out iron. A simple blood test can detect iron overload, but it’s not part of the standard blood test ordered with annual checkups and doctors must specifically request an iron series profile on the lab requisition form. Primary treatment consists of the removal of blood, similar to a blood donation, but more frequent. Once normal iron levels are re-established, they can be maintained by blood removal two to six times annually. After diagnosis, Walters, who is considered young to be suffering from hemochromatosis, had 450 milliliters of blood removed every week for several months. Now, her up-keep is down to three to four times a year. And the changes in Walters, 36, since diagnosis have been life changing. She now sports a head of thick, long hair. The eczema is gone from her body. And, most telling, she imme-

diately lost 35 pounds without trying, she said. Combined with a fitness program she’s followed since the summer, Walters has shed 70 pounds since February 2011. Upon diagnosis, Walters contacted the Canadian Hemochromatosis Society to get more information, and is now a volunteer with the organization and hopes to help establish a chapter in Toronto. tor and CEO of the Canadian Hemochromatosis Society, said the organization periodically runs information sessions across the country, with the hopes of bringing awareness to the little-known disorder. “It’s relatively unknown, even among physicians,” Rogers said in a phone interview from Richmond, British Columbia, where the society is based. “It’s misdiagnosed and under-diagnosed.” The Oct. 28 event will give people opportunity to hear Rogers’ presentation and ask questions, and use the time to garner interest in starting a Toronto chapter, he said. “We used to have a chapter in Toronto, but the former leader is now old,” Rogers said. “We’d like to renew it again. We really need to take this a whole lot further.” To RSVP for the awareness event, email toronto@ toomuchiron.ca
