St. Clare’s Roman Catholic Church continues to play an
important role in Antonella Albano’s life. The married mother of a two-year-old daughter has been attending the St. Clair Avenue

Toronto’s Transportation Services rolled out its new “Please Slow Down” lawn signs this month as part of a $40,000-Fall Safety Awareness Campaign. Residents are invited to place these signs on their front lawns as a way of “immediate, but temporary, response to concerns of vehicles speeding on residential streets,” according to Transportation Services. The signs became available to residents the week of Oct. 19. The signs measure at 61-by-51 centimetres, and are yellow and black. They consist of a metal wire frame inside of recyclable plastic material. “These signs are to be used as a communication tool to motorists in addressing residents’ concerns regarding speeding on their street,” Transportation Services said in a report, while noting that “not all drivers will necessarily heed these warnings.” Through the Fall Safety Awareness Campaign, each of the city’s 44 councillors was expected to receive between 300 and 500 of the new signs, to be distributed free-ofcharge to residents upon request. South Etobicoke residents might notice the similarity of the newly released signs to those already rolled out earlier this summer in the Etobicoke-Lakeshore wards of Councillors Justin Di Ciano (Ward

During September’s meeting of the Etobicoke York Community Council, transportation staff noted that the signs are intended to be reuseable and will be allowed to be on display on public right-of-ways from April 1 to Nov. 30 each year. The signs are permitted on public property between the curb/edge of the roadway and the property line. They must be located at least two feet from the curb, in areas where they will not obstruct sight lines for pedestrians, cyclists or drivers. For more information or to request a Please Slow Down sign, residents are urged to contact their local city councillor’s office. – Cynthia Reason

ith fall’s darker days now taking hold, and the turning back of the clocks early this Sunday morning as we go back to standard time, pedestrians are at an increased risk of being struck by a vehicle on our city’s streets. Toronto police will be warning drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to be extra cautious once Daylight Savings Time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday. Caution should be the operative word at all times, but it’s especially important in these dark days of November as the number of incidents in which pedestrians are struck by vehicles rises significantly in Toronto. The first week of November last year saw five incidents in the city involving pedestrians being struck in one day (Tuesday, Nov. 4, two days after Daylight Savings Time ended). What we – drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and everyone else who uses our roads – need to do is be that much more aware of the dangers, focus on the safety of all, and take some basic precautions to increase the odds of everyone our view going about their day safely, but especially in the morning and evening rush hours. That’s when We can all the advancing darkness, along take basic with confusion due to the time in the morning hours, precautions change has its greatest impact on the roads. The most dangerous time of day is between 5 and 7 p.m., police say. Pedestrians being struck by drivers making left turns are the most common incident, as it takes a moment for driver’s eyes to adjust from the brightness of the headlights coming toward them to the darker intersection. This problem is made worse if the pedestrian crossing is wearing dark clothing. Obviously, pedestrians need to think about wearing brighter clothing and not to be distracted by cellphones while crossing the street. Along with the increased need for caution Sunday due to the time change, we also remind our readers to be extra careful on the roads Halloween night this Saturday as excited trick-or-treaters hit the streets. By taking a few moments to think, and being aware of the increased dangers, we can make this Halloween and November safer for all.

Trudeau’s election comes with lack of mandate Politics often seems a kind of echo chamber. Themes and movements bounce back and forth, distorting as they go but recognizable for longer than might make sense. It’s tempting to trace the election of Justin Trudeau’s majority back through the election of Kathleen Wynne, the improbable spectacle of an NDP government in Alberta – even the ascent of gentleman John Tory in Toronto – as a particularly resonant echo. nod to the left wing All of these elections mark a repudiation of the hard right conservatism exemplified by the nowformer Harper government, the Progressive Conservatives in Ontario, the depraved populism of Etobicoke’s Ford family, and a nod, at least, to the left wing big-government ideas that the New Democratic Party used to get behind.
david nickle the city In none of these cases, of course, is it a sea-change toward precisely those ideas. When Tory won the 2014 Toronto mayoralty race on a platform of big transit infrastructure and progressive social policies, he was closely followed by Doug Ford in support, leaving New Democrat candidate Olivia Chow in the dust. Similarly, Wynne and Trudeau may have their majority governments, but they didn’t mop the floor with their right-leaning opponents. Trudeau did very well, but it was hardly a rout. If Harper had chosen to stay, he would have led a healthy official opposition – a far cry from the electoral massacre visited upon the federal Progressive Conservatives in 1993, when the caucus
was reduced to only two. Lots of people supported Harper, and the Fords, and former Ontario Progressive Conservative leader Tim Hudak in his plan to gut the public service. The common thread? Lots more people decided that they definitively did not want any of those politicians anywhere near the levers of power, and collectively sent someone else along instead. voter trust It’s a funny sort of mandate – not really a mandate at all, when you think of it – that makes it more difficult than usual to chart success. Do a plurality of people in Toronto really think Tory’s central campaign promise of building SmartTrack is a good idea, or are they just relieved to know that the Fords won’t be in power? Voter trust in Ontario Premier Wynne is a big
question, as her Liberal government embarks on a very Conservativesounding sell-off of Hydro One. And as for Justin Trudeau and the new Liberal government in Ottawa: do his supporters also support his deficitrunning plan, his support of Bill C-51 in some form or another, or whatever else the Liberals choose to bring about? Perhaps, but it appears from polls and the numbers that what Trudeau’s supporters really want is that he replace Stephen Harper. This is the downside of strategic voting. It is both a way of saying what it is that you don’t want, and not particularly caring about what it is you do. The echo is, as echoes often are, discouragingly empty. Help for the office Halloween party The signs are up all over the office advertising our Halloween party. It’s being touted as the biggest one ever. Judging by the flurry of questions in my mailbox, a lot of organizations are planning similar bashes. Here are a few samples. Q. Our company says we’re supposed to pick a costume that resembles our work behaviour. Well, I’m known around here as someone whose attendance record is, shall we say, spotty at the best of times. I also have a reputation as a bachelor who plays the field. I’m required to pick something scary that combines the two. Any ideas? A. Just one. How about a werewolf? Q. I’ve worn either celebrity look-a-like or action figure outfits on Halloween since I was a kid, but there’s a costume contest at our company with big prizes and I want to try and win. pires. What should I have on the menu? A. That’s easy. Philly cheesestake. Q. The buzz is that everybody in our entire office is going to be showing up as zombies this year? What’s your take on that? A. Are you absolutely sure that’s a Halloween party they’re talking about and not a come-as-you-are party? Q. I’m beside myself, I tell ya. I can’t eat or sleep I’m so nervous. I’ve been asked to run our office Halloween shebang and it’s just a few days away and all I have been able to come up with so far is a skeleton of an idea. Any advice? A. Yeah. Relax. You’ve nailed it. You don’t need any help. Your concept sounds spooktacular.

Download a wicked witch app and make sure it includes spell check. Q. My plan is to go to our party and unwind. I have no intention of trying to be the centre of attention. I’m not the least bit interested in having coworkers gabbing away about my costume until next Halloween, so I don’t want to wear a provocative get-up. With that in mind, anything I shouldn’t get dressed up as? A. Yup. Considering “unwind” is the operative word, then you better not go as a mummy. Q. I’m in charge of the food for the Halloween party for our company. Our theme is Philadelphia vam-

NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING #1 BARRIE RAIL CORRIDOR EXPANSION TRANSIT PROJECT ASSESSMENT PROCESS Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario, is working to transform the way the region moves by building a fast, convenient and integrated transit network across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) and Simcoe County. Part of this plan is to bring frequent and reliable service to communities along the Barrie rail corridor. THE PROJECT Current plans include electrified, all-day, two-way service every 15 minutes to Aurora as well as regular peak, midday, evening and weekend GO train service to Allandale Waterfront GO Station. This service will be phased in over 10 years while we build additional infrastructure. To support this vision, Metrolinx is proposing the expansion of the Barrie rail corridor between Lansdowne Avenue (Mile 3.00) in the City of Toronto and Allandale Waterfront GO Station (Mile 63.00) in the City of Barrie. The study will identify the specific and appropriate rail corridor infrastructure improvements that are needed to support this increased level of GO train service.

THE PROCESS Metrolinx is assessing the environmental impacts of expanding the Barrie corridor according to the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP), as prescribed in Ontario Regulation 231/08, Transit Projects and Metrolinx Undertakings. The project will include the study and provision for additional tracks along the corridor, improvements to all existing GO stations, a new train storage facility and a feasibility review of existing at-grade rail-to-road crossing. FIND OUT MORE Your feedback and community perspective is important to informing this project. Residents, agencies and other interested persons are encouraged to find out more and ask questions of Metrolinx staff at the public meetings that have been scheduled along the corridor. You are also welcome to contact staff directly with information, comments or questions. When the TPAP formally begins, feedback and comments will be included in the final report that is presented to the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change for approval. Etobicoke York Community – 2015 Mechanical Leaf Collection
Transportation Services has once again scheduled mechanical leaf collection service in the areas outlined on the attached map. Mechanical Leaf Collection will take place from: Monday, November 9th to Friday, December 4th, 2015
ETOBICOKE YORK DISTRICT - MECHANICAL LEAF COLLECTION - 2015
A total of 43,300 notices, with the program collection dates, will be delivered to all households in the program area. Only those residents who are scheduled to receive mechanical leaf pick-up will receive notification, two weeks prior to the scheduled pick-up dates of the first week of collection. (Those that do not receive a notice are not eligible for the program). A day or two before the first Monday of your collection week(s), please rake all leaves to the edge of the roadway, but not onto the travelled portion of the roadway. Do not place leaves in ditches or in any way as to obstruct water flow. Once crews have picked up the leaves, they will not return to the area and the residents must bag any remaining leaves. Only the leaves that have been placed by the edge of the roadway by 7:00 a.m. the first day of your scheduled collection week will be removed.

If the leaf collection program is suspended due to an early snow fall, we will not resume leaf collection and any remaining leaves will have to be bagged for pick-up during your regular waste collection day. The City suggests that, whenever possible, composting is still the best solution for managing your leaves. For information on composting, please visit: www.toronto.ca/compost. If you do not receive mechanical leaf collection, place your yard waste in reusable, rigid, open-top containers or kraft paper bags on your regular yard waste collection day for pick-up. Check your local collection calendar for your yard waste collection schedule and more helpful tips. Top 5 renovation tips to create more space Make your home feel more spacious by taking on a few home renovation projects As real estate prices continue to climb, the cost to trade up an existing home for a larger one has increased substantially. As a result, more and more Canadians are choosing to renovate their homes, rather than relocating. In fact, it was recently revealed that renovation spending in Canada reached a record $68 billion last year, outpacing spending on new home construction. While the hunt for more square footage can be challenging, homeowners shouldn’t feel like a costly second story or complete addition are the only options. Here are five great ways to create or optimize space in your existing home:
Finish the basement. This one renovation holds limitless potential and can increase the resale value or income potential of your home. Think about the possibilities: a home theatre, office, spare bedroom, basement apartment or recreation room. The key to doing it successfully is to focus on what’s behind the walls, especially since moisture is a common issue in basements. Choosing the right insulation is critical. Look for products that are vapour permeable, dimensionally stable and mould and moisture resistant.
Create an open-concept feel with light and colour. If your home wasn’t blessed with towering win-
dows, installing French doors and pot lights can encourage light to travel more freely, creating the illusion of space. Likewise, choosing a paint colour for walls, trim and mouldings that is lighter and cooler in tone (think soft greys or blues) will help to reflect light and give the room a more open feel.
Remove non-load-bearing walls. Homeowners have the opportunity to rethink the layout of their home by removing non-loadbearing walls. Removing structurally unnecessary walls can make your whole home feel larger and improve the flow, lighting and function of your home.
Convert your garage. For many homeowners, the garage becomes an overflow room for storage––and is often a walk-in headache. Instead, convert it into another living space, like a guest bedroom or home office. Install carpet and quality thermal insulation to keep in warmth and block outdoor noise.
Choose furniture and accessories carefully. Adopt a minimalist’s eye. Begin looking around your home for furniture or accessories that overwhelm the space. Interior designers recommend choosing low-profile or small-scale furniture for rooms with less square footage. Dual-purpose
items, such as ottomans with storage chests inside, are a budget-friendly way to save on space
while staying organized.

style mavens NOTICE OF COMMENCEMENT AND PUBLIC MEETING #2 CALEDONIA GO STATION METROLINX - TRANSIT PROJECT ASSESSMENT PROCESS Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario, is working to transform the way the region moves by building a fast, convenient and integrated transit network across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) and Simcoe County. Part of this plan is to bring frequent and reliable service to communities along the Barrie rail corridor. THE PROJECT Current plans include electrified, two-way, all-day service every 15 minutes to Aurora as well as peak, midday, evening and weekend GO train service to Allandale Waterfront GO Station. The service increase will be phased in over 10 years while we build additional infrastructure. To support this service increase, Metrolinx is proposing a new GO Station on the Barrie rail corridor within the City of Toronto. The Caledonia GO Station will be integrated with the future Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit Station at Eglinton Avenue West and Croham Road (west of Caledonia Road), adding regional connectivity to the Crosstown and the Toronto Transit Commission bus network. THE PROCESS Metrolinx is assessing the environmental impacts of building a new station on the Barrie corridor according to the Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) as prescribed in Ontario Regulation 231/08, Transit Projects and Metrolinx Undertakings. As part of the TPAP, an Environmental Project Report (EPR) will be filed documenting any potential environmental effects and mitigation requirements of the Project. Viewing locations for the agency and public review of the EPR will be published in the Notice of Completion. All information produced as part of this project is available at www.metrolinx.com/en/regionalplanning/rer/rer_work.aspx FIND OUT MORE We thank everyone for their feedback to date during our pre-engagement. As we launch the notice of commencement and formal six-month TPAP process, we continue to encourage our neighbours, agencies and other interested persons to actively participate in the TPAP by attending meetings or contacting staff directly with information, comments or questions. Your participation is an important part of this process and we welcome your input. You are invited to attend the second public meeting listed below. The project team will be on hand to answer questions and receive your comments. DATE: TIME: PRESENTATION: LOCATION:

Book tells story of parish life, picnics and dances >>>from page 1 way to end the week.” Albano’s parents were first generation immigrants to Canada. They came to Toronto, settling in what is now known as the Corso Italia neighbourhood soon after they were married. They were still learning English and took comfort in living in the Italian community, Albano said. She and her brother attended St. Clare Catholic Elementary School adjacent to the church. The family lived on Westmount Avenue, just north of St. Clair Avenue until Albano was in Grade 2 and then moved to Rogers Road and Oakmount Drive – always remaining close to the church. A year before she got married, Albano’s mother died. “We felt at home at the church during happy times and sad times,” said Albano, recalling how congregants rallied around her family when her mother died. She shared her personal

connection to the church in a written contribution to St. Clare’s Church: Celebrating 100 Years of Faith and Service, a hardcover book created by parishioners, which not only delves into the evolution of the church, but highlights the growth of the Catholic church
in Toronto over the past century as well as the Corso Italia neighbourhood. The book, celebrates the centenary of the parish, which took place in 2013, and chronicles the life and times of its community near
the intersection of Dufferin Street and St. Clair Avenue West. It boasts more than 300 colour and black-andwhite archival photographs and candid shots of the faith community over the decades.
“The project was initiated because of the 100th anniversary,” executive editor Christine Horgan said. “(The book has) a lot of detail about church history and the actual building. It also talks a lot about the interior, its stained glass windows, about some statues donated by a particular parishioner.” It tells the story of parish life, of picnics and dances, Horgan said, adding the book took two years to complete. “We started with nothing, but ended up with more information than we needed,” she said. Horgan told of a story the book committee uncovered about one of the church’s priests who started a ‘back to the land’ project during the Great Depression. He took a group of parishioners who were out of work up north to be taught how to be farmers. “The church is a microcosm of the histor y of
Toronto,” Horgan said. The book includes personal recollections, such as one from a woman, who in the 1960s, met her husband while in the choir. She was a singer and he, the director. St. Clare’s Church is designated an official heritage property because of its architectural significance – it is one of the few places of worship in Toronto built in the Renaissance Revival style. The book committee spent countless hours interviewing former pastors and parishioners while consulting with specialists in everything from the manufacture of stained glass windows to Catholic social teaching. They made trips to several archives and pored over reels of newspapers on microfiche machines and several decades of hardbound church bulletins.

Bell Cote church receives merit award from Heritage Toronto DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com The Toronto Bell Cote truly is the little church that could. The 120-year-old building with a 1,400-square-foot main floor area, located on Scarlett Road near the WestonEtobicoke border, and its owners have been recognized for their efforts in preserving it.
The little white building, the only known wood-framed bell cote church in the city, had been on the verge of collapse when restoration work began in 2012. Major restoration was completed in 2014. The bell cote is missing its bell, which had been stolen years before. The new owners of the church, Sukyo Mahikari Canada, received the award
of merit for a small project in the William Greer Architectural Conservation and Craftsmanship category at the Heritage Toronto awards gala held at Koerner Hall Oct. 13. The Sukyo Mahikari Centre for Spiritual Development operates in the space. Subhas Mukhopadkyay, a member of Sukyo Mahikari and president of Toronto Bell

Cote Heritage Preservation, previously told The Guardian restoration of the building was painful. “It was one of the most complex renovations one can think of. It looks simple, but it’s not. There was no foundation. When it was built, it was not built to any construction rules because it was done by amateurs initially. This was transported without any foundation, just a little concrete base.” The church was built in Malton in 1885 in Victorian Gothic Revival style. It was moved to its current Lawrence Avenue and Scarlett Road location in 1923. When Hurricane Hazel hit in 1954, it served as a rescue shelter in the community. A few years later, the congregation outgrew the church and moved to a new location. The building fell into disrepair, with the main structure near collapse by the 2000s. In 2003, the church was designated as a heritage building by the city. Sukyo Mahikari Canada, a

spiritual development organization, bought the church in 2009, and created a separate heritage preservation organization to restore and maintain it. The restoration required building a foundation, without moving the existing church, new steel framing and wood restoration. To restore wood, much of which was rotten, each piece had to be removed one by one, stripped, cleaned and
conditioned, Mukhopadkyay said. The William Greer Architectural Conservation and Craftsmanship recognizes projects that restore or adapt buildings or structures older than 40 years or those that are included on the City of Toronto’s Inventory of Heritage Properties.

Students make and eat six-foot subs as part of Feed Tomorrow campaign DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com What’s the best part of making a six-foot long sub sandwich? You get to eat it when you’re done. That’s exactly what students did in 18 schools across Toronto to kick off Feed Tomorrow Week Tuesday, Oct. 20. “I’m very hungry. I want to eat it right now and the bread is so warm,” said Grade 6 student and sandwich-maker Vicencia Boadi at Rockcliffe Middle School, as she was laying slices of ham, cheese and vegetables on the large baguette. Vicencia was among a group of students who are regular participants of beyond 3:30, an after-school program put on by the Toronto Foundation for Student Success. The programs operate in Toronto’s neighbourhoods of York, northern Etobicoke, North York, East York and Scarborough.

Vincencia Boadi, left, Nala Bailey and Harit Oza build a sandwich with a six-foot baguette from ACE Bakery during a beyond 3:30 after-school nutrition program at Rockcliffe Middle School last week.
To kick-off Feed Tomorrow Week, students in the program made sandwiches during the ACE Bakery Student Snack Down Event. Each of the 18 beyond 3:30 sites received two six-foot baguettes from ACE Bakery, an artisan bread
producer. Last year, ACE Bakery staff raised $25,000 for beyond 3:30. Beyond 3:30 offers programs from homework support to physical fitness, to the arts and much more.
