West-end group meeting with minister on noise walls ◗ A west-end residents group is hoping the province will step in to halt a series of controversial train noise walls planned by Metrolinx. Kevin Putnam and fellow representatives from the Junction Triangle Rail Committee are sched-

uled to meet with Ontario Transportation Minister Glen Murray today at Queen’s Park to relay the group’s objections to 16-feet high concrete and transparent acrylic barriers Metrolinx wants to begin constructing along the GO Georgetown South rail cor-

ridor, which passes through Weston, starting next year. The group has long opposed the noise walls which it considers an eyesore intended to hide diesel train traffic from view and make future electrification of the Georgetown corridor less

likely. Metrolinx says the barriers need to be in place by 2015, when the Union Pearson (UP) Express air rail link begins operation and creates a significant increase in diesel train traffic along the corridor. – Rahul Gupta
