After seven years watching For Youth Initiative (FYI) grow into an organization serving 1,000 local youth, Lekan Olawoye will be stepping down as its executive director. “We built an amazing team over here,” said Olawoye, recalling when he first started at FYI in October 2008, there were two fulltime staff and three parttimers. “Now we have about 30 staff.” Its impact on the local community has also grown, he noted, with FYI providing several programs for youth, leading a city-wide Youth Anti-Violence Taskforce, and helping other smaller organizations reach out to youth across the Greater Toronto Area. More recently, the local organization held its back to school community barbecue on Aug. 29 where an estimated 700 people attended and 400 fully stocked backpacks were distributed to children and youth. an ambitious goal in its inaugural fundraising campaign, aiming to raise $100 million. This funding will help support 220 partner agencies in 10
