Paralympian competes in 100-metre breaststroke Saturday

ork resident Miguel Nascimento is hoping for a personal best, but admits he’s dreaming of winning a medal as he prepares for the 100-metre breaststroke at the Paralympic Games in London, England on Saturday. “I feel great coming to London for my first Games. I am very anxious to get into the pool and give it my all in the race,” he said by email from London. The 18-year-old member of the York Swim Club is swimming for Portugal because he is a Portuguese citizen. He may one day swim for Canada, as his family is in the process of seeking permanent residency and future Canadian citizenship. But for the moment, he is focused on Saturday’s competition. “I am currently ranked ninth in the world and so I plan for a personal best in the morning in order to get into (the) finals,” said Nascimento, who lives southwest of Eglinton Avenue and Dufferin Street. “I am going in with the attitude that anything can happen and that the race is not over until the >>>YORK, page 3
