The local resident was selected as one of eight winners in the fourth annual ROYALE Inspire Us photo challenge that saw more than 9,000 photos submitted this year. “I’m very excited to receive one of those honours,” said Swartz, who grew up in the former city of York. “Just the fact that it’s out there is great.” Swartz started taking

pictures when he was eight years old and continues to take photographs on the side when he’s not working for the city during the day. “I’ve been doing photography for my whole life,” Swartz said. He happened to have his camera with him when he was on the shores of Lake Huron at dusk. “It’s the most beautiful sunset in the world,” said Swartz of his photograph

The people who voted in the contest seemed to agree with more than 350,000 votes cast in total. “It has never been easier to capture beautiful images, but these eight photos have clearly stood out with Canadians voting to give them top spot in the competition,” said Gary MacIntosh, Royale Canada director of mar-

keting. The 2013 ROYALE Inspire Us Photo Challenge ran from September to December 2012. Canadians were asked to submit their most inspiring photos with a panel of judges selecting 40 photos for the online vote. Each winner received $1,500 in addition to having their photo displayed on tissue boxes across the country.

Culture Days returns to local libraries from Sept. 27 to 29 with groups and individuals showcasing their creative work to new audiences. The Toronto Public Library has partnered with the Neighbourhood Arts Network for the third consecutive year to host Culture Days, featuring a wide range of activities inspired by art forms and cultural traditions from around the world. One of the local libraries involved is Maria A. Shchuka, 1745 Eglinton Ave. W., which will feature Turkish Kilim Weaving on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 1 to 3 p.m. “It is a privilege for us to share our Turkish cultural heritage with our friends in the community and be part of Culture Days and the Library,” said Evnur Taran, activity organizer for Turkish kilim weaving at the Maria A. Shchuka Library, in a statement. “No matter what language we speak, when arts and crafts people get together they speak a common language which creates a unique friendship and bonds people together.” The Mount Dennis Branch, 1123 Weston Rd., will be hosting Infinite Dimensions where anyone can drop in Saturday, Sept. 28 between 1 and 5 p.m. to join Isabel Mazzotta and learn origami (the art of Japanese paper folding). rovincial politicians are back to work at Queen’s Park this week, and for Toronto residents there will be something we haven’t had for 10 years – a Progressive Conservative MPP representing a Toronto riding. Doug Holyday, who until the Aug. 1 byelection was Toronto’s deputy mayor and councillor for Etobicoke Centre’s Ward 3, is the first PC from Toronto in the legislature since Liberal Dalton McGuinty was first elected premier in 2003, replacing the Tory government of Ernie Eves. Since then, Toronto’s representation has been decidedly Liberal, with a smattering of NDP MPs. Now we see a legislature with five NDP MPPs, one PC and 17 Liberals among our 23 ridings. With Premier Kathleen Wynne our view representing the Toronto riding of Don Valley West in the Liberal Holyday will minority government as well, we expect the needs of our city to be offer balance given the priority they deserve at at Queen’s Park Queen’s Park. A first step took place last week when Minister of Transportation Glen Murray announced funding for an extension of the BloorDanforth subway line from Kennedy station to the Scarborough Town Centre. This was a big issue during August’s byelections, particularly in the riding of Scarborough-Guildwood (which stayed Liberal in a race won by Mitzie Hunter). Regardless of whether one thinks replacing the aging Scarborough RT with a subway is the right or wrong decision, what it shows is the political balance shifting in the city to a point where Toronto’s support can no longer be taken for granted by the Liberals. With his experience as Toronto’s deputy mayor, we’ll be looking at Holyday to bring his perspective to a number of issues including government spending as he has a well-deserved reputation of looking after taxpayers’ money. Given the riding he represents is right on the border of the Mississauga gas power plant that was controversially cancelled by the Liberals, we also want to see Holyday holding the government to account on exactly how much was spent on that decision. Holyday is deeply respected and passionate not only about Etobicoke but all of Toronto. Having an experienced and level-headed PC with a strong understanding of the issues of the entire city bodes well for the upcoming session at Queen’s Park.

Must-see viewing at TIFF this year I haven’t had a chance to screen all of the TIFF 2013 entries, but I’ve been burning the midnight oil seeing as many as possible. For those who haven’t made up their minds about which ones to take in, here are my Top 5 choices. 1. Star Trek 99: Return To The Planet Of The Apps Starfleet is in a real pickle. Data, the android, is behaving erratically on the bridge, which is endangering the USS Enterprise. Urgent messages from command center to Captain Jean-Luc Picard to take care of matters have gone unanswered. With good reason, Picard is busy doing dinner theatre in New Hampshire. That leaves the higher ups with no other option but to try and coax venerable Captain James Kirk

out of retirement yet again. Will they succeed? They’d better. The mission is a difficult one: to boldly go where no man has gone since Star Trek 66, to the volatile planet of the Apps, the only known outpost in the universe possessing the upgrades to Data’s rapidly deteriorating software. 2. Trading Places 2 A sequel of sorts to the 1980s Eddie Murphy/Dan Aykroyd flick. Psy plays a rapper who deep down always wanted to sing opera. He moves to Spain to study with legendary tenor Leonardo (Placido Domingo) who, he discovers, always wanted to be a rapper. Insiders say the movie theme song is sure to get

an Oscar nomination. Sung by Domingo it’s titled: Opera Gangnam Style.

3. Pilates Of The Caribbean Exhausted after years of fighting bad guys, Jack Sparrow takes a muchneeded break, picking up a summer job as one of two pilates instructors on a Caribbean cruise ship. Little did he know long-time rival Hector Barbossa, also in need of time away from his life of skulduggery on the Black Pearl, got the other gig. Uh, oh. Let the games begin. 4. Lord of the Onion Rings Trilogy, Episode One: Do You Want Fries With That? Frodo’s Hobbit offspring are off in Mordor dealing with the evil Gollum. Whoop dee doo. Frodo has bigger fish – and assorted other items – to

fry, running the first-ever fast-food franchise in the Shire. 5. The Perfect Mess

Reader thankful for help from Good Samaritans To the editor: Thank you very much to a man named Jim who saved my life. It’s hard to believe what happened on the train at Lansdowne subway station. I placed my shopping bag and my purse on the seat in front of me. The man sitting next to my purse, suddenly grabbed my purse and rushed to the exit. I am behind him, shouting, “Stop him! He took my purse...stop him! Stop him!” I couldn’t chase any more. When I looked up, I saw a handsome, tall man approaching with my purse. He told me he ran after the purse snatcher and told him if he dropped the purse, nobody would chase him. I was so happy to get my purse back, with everything still inside. I asked him to tell me his name. He hesitated at first, but after my persistence, he told me his

name. While we were waiting for the police, I was introduced to Jim’s wife. She told me that it isn’t the first time that her husband has helped people. The next day, I called the TTC’s lost and found office. I left my heavy shopping bags on the train when I ran after the man with my purse. To my joy, my shopping bags were there. The man from the lost and found office told me that a man dropped them off at Bay subway station. This is an example of how we have more good people in Toronto, than bad. We can change this world for the better. And we will. Thanks to Jim, his wife, the man who brought my bag to the lost and found and the man from lost and found. Tatiana Pribytkova

I was crazy excited,” said Padawer, when she heard that she had won. The Winona Drive and St. Clair Avenue area resident has been teaching English to adults at CCVT’s Scarborough location for the past three years where her students are largely refugees from foreign countries. “I’m working with a population that’s basically lost

everything. Their homes are gone, their careers are gone, their lives are gone,” Padawer said. “I’m always moved by hearing about their experiences. It’s almost impossible teaching a population like this without feeling you want a better world.” In her essay, which was selected from 49 submissions from ESL instructors throughout the province, Padawer noted the difficulties many of her students face learning English in their new home country. “There’s a whole slew of things interrupting their

week,” said Padawer, noting that classes are held four days a week for three hours each day in the morning. Some of those interruptions include meetings with immigration lawyers, occasional jobs, sick children, and medical appointments. But there are moments when she’s teaching, a connection is made with the student that what she’s learning matters. “It was like watching a flower open; her slowly reading the story of Rosa Parks and the civil rights movement. It was, however, more than just this student’s comprehen-

sion of the English words, but feeling her connect this story, this bit of knowledge, with the idea of fighting for justice beyond oneself,” she wrote in her essay. Later Padawer continued, “Learning English is the tool to not only forge a life here, but to access knowledge and question the social constructs in our world; to seek a more fair and just world. That is social change.” Padawer will be honoured along with five other contest winners at a welcome reception of TESL Ontario’s 41st annual conference in Toronto on Oct. 24.

Funding to help grads access paid internships CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com The Career Foundation located near Allen Road and Lawrence Avenue received about $900,000 in federal funding to help recent graduates gain work experience through paid internships. Eglinton-Lawrence MP Joe Oliver made the announcement in late August, stressing the importance of helping young people get the skills they need upon graduation to enter and succeed in the job market. “Many youth are looking for work and struggling to get their foot in the door,” said Oliver, noting the problem is that without experience, no job is readily available, and that without a job, no experience can be gained. He added that through the government’s Career Focus program, participants will be able to gain that valuable work experience through internships with private sector employers. “There’s a large need for skilled workers,” Oliver said. “And that need is getting larger and larger.” Kristen Morrison, director of operations at The Career Foundation, said that in recent years they’ve seen

The new director of education for the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) officially replaced Bruce Rodrigues Aug. 1 after he was selected as the CEO of the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) for the province. “It’s been crazy busy,” Gauthier said in an interview with The York Guardian before the school year began. She attended a Focus on Youth celebration event in

August with summer school programs still going on. Gauthier also met with senior staff to identify board priorities and took part in workshops to help new prin-

cipals and vice-principals prepare for the school year. So far, the transition has been smooth. It helped that she’s already very familiar with the board,

Gauthier said. Prior to her appointment as eduction director, Gauthier served as TCDSB’s associate director of academic affairs since 2008. The board of trustees also endorsed her as someone who brings a wealth of experience to the education director position. “Angela is very passionate about how we can better support the academic achievement and well-being of our students,” said board chair Ann Andrachuk in a statement. “She is the right person at the right time with a clear understanding of the gains already made by this board and how we can move forward together with innovative, new ideas that support learning and deal with the challenges ahead.” In her tenure as associate director, she focused on the board’s 21st Century Learning strategy and improving access to technology for students and teachers.

Using technology to identify “teachable moments” and to figure out what fully engages students remains a priority this year, Gauthier said. setting priorities From a curriculum standpoint, she noted they will redouble their efforts and revisit strategies to improve overall math scores, which have plateaued lately. Another priority is working with local parishes as key stakeholders within the schools to provide Catholic values. Stabilizing governance will also be a continued work in progress. “We want to make sure our resources are aligned with our needs,” said Gauthier, who expressed optimism about working with the trustees. “We’re progressing really nicely. We’ve done a lot of reflection and there’s always room for improvement.” As for the challenges ahead, Gauthier cited a better under-

standing of poverty in the city will be necessary to help disadvantaged students in every school. That will mean getting involved beyond the school walls, reaching out to community stakeholders such as daycares and police as well as parent councils for their input. “We want our neighbours to know that we’re there,” said Gauthier, adding that Catholic schools should be a positive presence within the community. With the school year now underway, Gauthier emphasized the importance of shared leadership and collective responsibility with her staff. They’ll also be out in the schools more often to connect with the students and to understand better what’s good for their education. “It’s good for us to have that constant reminder,” she said. “It’s going to be fun.”

Good journalism essential to democracy

iven the hearings, trials and appeals that Mayor Rob Ford has gone through over the past three years, it’s hard to imagine a lower-stakes game than the Ontario Press Council hearings that took place Monday. If the Globe and Mail and Toronto Star are found to have behaved unethically in pursuing stories about the mayor and his brother Doug, they’ll have to publish the scolding decisions in full. No one’s talking about throwing them out of their newspaper boxes. But wouldn’t you know it? Out of the second half of the hearing came one of the most cogent – and dispiriting – statements of the health of our body politic to come along in years. Specifically, it came from complainant Connie Harrison, who objected to the Globe and Mail’s story alleging Doug Ford once ran a hashish distribution business in central Etobicoke. She, however, demands more than the Globe has been able to provide, being as none of the sources who

david nickle the city spoke about the alleged Ford hashish business were willing to be identified. Assurances from editors and reporters that the sources had been vetted, and their fears of the consequences of revealing their names were real, didn’t wash with Harrison. The Globe should have betrayed its sources, submitted its reporter’s notes to a third party, or failing that, simply ask for its reporter’s resignation. Bottom line: whatever credibility the Globe had managed to earn over the decades didn’t count to her. By reporting as much of the story that it thought it could without squaring the circle with unwillingly named sources, the Globe and Mail did only harm to the city. Now, we journalists have never enjoyed the love we feel we deserve from the public, and Harrison’s opinions and feelings are her own. But they are not only her own, in this divided city. The mayor and

his brother take pains to paint their critics in the media as partisan liars, whose freedomof-information requests are signs of impertinence. Is that narrative taking hold? Not overall, hopefully. The accountability provided by good journalism is, as was stated by both Globe editor John Stackhouse and earlier in the day by Toronto Star editor-in-chief Michael Cooke, essential to the functioning of a healthy democracy. It’s also fragile. Reporters and editors cannot compel testimony or proceed with criminal charges if they believe they’re warranted. They can’t use wiretaps. They can’t enter premises. They cannot, always, deliver 100 per cent of an important story as fast as their readers might wish. With all its imperfections, however, good reporting sheds light on matters that the public should know about, and that’s a vital function – even if sometimes that light isn’t as bright or constant as some of us might wish.

The committee also got a look at the city’s overall surplus, which currently is being projected to be $57 million – a number considerably lower than surpluses in years past, that run into the hundreds of millions of dollars. City finance staff told councillors that by the end of the year, the surplus was likely to approach $100 million, but not much higher than that. Minister of Employment and Social Development, LMOs are designed to ensure employers look to hire Canadians first before hiring temporary foreign workers. “ The Labour Market Opinion fee applies to any and all employers, in all industries

and sectors and in all parts of the country, who require a labour market opinion to bring in temporary foreign workers and it simply covers the cost of processing the application from employers,” Fortier said in a statement emailed to The Guardian.

“The reasoning behind the fee is simple – taxpayers shouldn’t pay the cost for employers to bring in temporary foreign workers. Previously taxpayers were paying the entire processing cost.” It has long been the case that booking agents, promoters and venue owners are required to obtain an LMO to hire international artists to perform in bars and restaurants in Canada. According to Fortier, when international artists are being booked by a promoter or booking agent to play at several bar and/or restaurant venues across Canada, they are only required to pay the LMO fee once. Tracy Jenkins, manager of the Lula Lounge, said that venue focuses on presenting diverse music and has international artists playing there frequently, often in collaboration with local artists. “We work with local musicians to create collaborative projects where we invite international artists to come

here, spend some time, work with local musicians often in a mentoring position, do workshops and then present a concert at the end,” Jenkins said. “With this new fee, it will make that kind of project almost impossible to do.” It will also affect young people who work at small venues, according to Marion Lewis, a co-creator of Canada’s first artist-run centre, known as A Space. Given a lack of employment opportunities, many young people end up with part-time work in the arts, entertainment and service industries, which will be hit by the fees, she said. Carlyle Doherty, an independent promoter from Waterloo, started a petition at change.org/canada4music that demands the government cancel their fee hike on live music. It has garnered more than 100,000 signatures inside a week from people across the globe, Doherty said.

Parents of Catholic elementary students are invited to enrich their child’s education through the language instruction, cultural awareness and a celebration of traditions taught through the Toronto Catholic District School Board’s international language instruction program. Designed for students in junior kindergarten through Grade 8, classes offered through the program include Arabic, Armenian, Chaldean, ChineseCantonese, Chinese-Mandarin,

Croatian, Hungarian, Igbo, Italian, Korean, Lithuanian, Malayalam, Maltese, Pilipino, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish, Tamil, Tigrigna, Ukrainian and Vietnamese. Classes begin Saturday. All of the two-and-a-half-hour classes are offered after regular school hours, usually on weekends from 9:30 a.m. to noon.
